The story of Dubbo is filled with boom times and calamity, surging floods, infamous deeds and rough justice.
The Tubba-Gah People of the Wiradjuri Nation are the Traditional Custodians of the Dubbo Region. Their deep connection to Country spans thousands of years, and you’ll find many cultural sites, stories and artworks across the area that reflect this enduring heritage. The Wiradjuri people refer to their land as the “land of the three rivers”, a reference to the Macquarie, Lachlan and Murrumbidgee, which sustain life across the region.
European exploration began in the early 1800s, and in 1817 the explorer John Oxley led an expedition through the fertile Wiradjuri lands. In his journals, Oxley described the region as rich in pastures and well-suited to grazing, yet he also documented sleepless nights due to the eerie calls of wild dingoes, early hints of the untamed landscape that lay ahead for settlers.
In the 1840s, pastoralist Robert Dulhunty selected a large area of riverfront land and established a pastoral run he called ‘Dubbo’, a Wiradjuri word widely believed to mean red earth. A small settlement soon followed. Progress was slow at first, but the town grew steadily as it became an important stopping point for stock routes, mail services and river trade. The discovery of gold in the 1850s brought new opportunities, with Dubbo benefitting from increased traffic and commercial activity. By the late 19th century, the town had developed into a thriving regional centre with hotels, general stores and a bustling streetscape. Dubbo was officially declared a city in 1966.
To take a deeper journey into the region’s past, visit the Western Plains Cultural Centre, where museum exhibitions and local history displays paint a vivid picture of Dubbo’s evolution. Just south of the city, Dundullimal Homestead, one of Australia’s oldest surviving timber slab homesteads, offers a remarkable glimpse into early settler life. Built in the early 1840s, this heritage property showcases the challenges and resilience of pioneer families living on the frontier.
Dundullimal Homestead is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 3pm (last entry 2pm) and is one of Dubbo’s most significant historical attractions.
Dubbo’s history is one of culture, courage and community, shaped by the land, its Traditional Custodians and the generations who have called this remarkable region home.
