What wonderful news! With climate cataclysms looming over us, and depletable fossil fuels rapidly heading for the dustbin of history (or so we are told) – the International Energy Agency is thankfully assuring humanity that “renewable, sustainable” offshore “wind farms” could easily generate much more electricity than the entire world is currently using: up to 36,000 terawatt-hours annually. (That’s 36 million gigawatthours or 36 billion megawatt-hours a year coming from wind turbines constructed closer than 37 miles from coastlines around the world, where waters are less than 60 meters (197 feet) deep, the IEA says. I’ve said it many times before, but obviously need to say it yet again: Wind and sunshine may be renewable, sustainable and eco-friendly. But the turbines, solar panels, transmission lines, lands, raw materials and dead birds required to harness this widely dispersed, intermittent, unreliable, weather-dependent energy to benefit humanity absolutely are not. Can you imagine how much non-renewable steel, copper, aluminum, rare earth elements, zinc, molybdenum, petroleum-based composites, reinforced concrete and other raw materials it would take to build, install and maintain 36,000 terawatthours of offshore wind turbines ... in 20 to 200 feet of water ... many on floating platforms big and strong enough to support monstrous 600-foot-tall turbines ... in the face of winds, waves, salt spray, storms and hurricanes? The impacts on terra firma and terra aqua would be monumental, unsustainable and hugely destructive. Don’t feel bad. I can’t really comprehend it either. But I try to address it in this article.
