The Chloe girl schools the Climate Kids about global warming Lesson 7: Computer climate models Hi, Climate Kids. The Chloe girl here. Mr. Eidson took me to Chick-fil-A for lunch. Ate too much. Had to take a nap. Some people say don’t eat at Chick-fil-A, reason being their chicken sandwiches are religious bigots. That’s nuts and all the Chloe girl has to say is Chick-fil-A sandwiches taste good, real good. Anyway, the same people who say don’t eat at Chick-fil-a also say computer models used to predict climate change are like really accurate. I decided to do some checking about that and let me tell you what I learned. A report published in the journal Nature Climate Change compared 117 computer model projections during the 1990s with the amount of warming that actually occurred. And get this. The study found that the climate models were nowhere near being accurate. Of the 117 predictions, only three were roughly accurate, while 114 overestimated the actual warming that occurred. On average, the computer models predicted TWICE as much warming as what actually occurred. I don’t know about you guys, but that doesn’t sound accurate to me. I learned a lot about why computer climate models aren’t accurate from William Happer, Emeritus Professor of Physics at Princeton University. Dr. Happer is one smart man. In 1982 he invented the Sodium Guide Star Laser, a technology that greatly improved the clarity of astronomical telescopes and helped the U.S. Air Force improve its ability to shoot down incoming nuclear missiles. He’s studied the greenhouse effect for the last half-century, and as a physicist he knows a thing or two about using computers to make scientific predictions. Last year, Dr. Happer did a PragerU video about climate models like the ones described above. The Chloe girl gives it her highest recommendation. To watch it, click here or on the image below.
