Nuclear Energy the Next Industrial Revolution Started in the United States of America© By Richard McPherson 2019 For nuclear generated carbon free electricity, the path the United States (US) must pursue to achieve security (economic, energy and national to include the economic ability to demonstrate the deterrence required) is available today. The US requires two standard nuclear power plants in manufacturing. • •

The NuScale Power Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design. The Molten Salt Nuclear Battery (MSNB) design from Micro Nuclear.

Both need to be EMP and cyber protected. Both designs Americans’ know how to field. There are no technical limitations – only the national will limits American ingenuity. The SMR is needed for commercial use at over 1,000 locations around the US including Alaska, Hawaii (Southeast corner on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station), Guam (Previous Orote Marine Corps Air Station) and Puerto Rico (Previous Roosevelt Roads Naval Station). It is currently held hostage by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Manufacturing can start within three years (sooner using a plan). NOTE: Starting after TMI and hastened by Chernobyl, commercial nuclear power in the United States began to decline. Spurned by increasing changes in public policy burdening commercial nuclear power, senior management in utilities morphed into bankers, accountants, lawyers and away from people who understood the company they headed. In 1993 the Clinton-Gore administration ushered in further declines by pushing renewables in the form of solar and wind over nuclear. They also took another tact by putting US Navy nuclear powered vessels out before the end of their useful life. Fast forward to today. The Obama administration all but completed the demise of commercial nuclear power and further hurt Navy nuclear power at the same time. 35 plus years of decline has eliminated thousands of jobs, thereby leaving well educated and experienced people sidelined. Not employed at a time when the United States should be creating the dawn of a new and highly advanced industrial revolution based upon nuclear energy, computing power and new materials. There is no sense of urgency anywhere. The United States should also promote research and development of thorium nuclear reactors. There is so much additional energy available there. 1
