Message 1 From Llewellyn King, Executive Producer and Host "White House Chronicle" on PBS (USA) To: John Shanahan Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA Dear John, Three hundred years ago the Thames in London used to freeze so hard that there were bull roasts on the ice and fairs. It was a grand old time.

That tells me that there is warming but that it has been going on for a long time.

What is incontrovertible today is the melting of the polar ice caps, the huge increase in the carbon load of the oceans and the slowing of the Gulf Stream --the Vega nerve of the northern hemisphere.

The numbers you quote don't, to my mind, alter the gravity of the situation. Throw in, if you like, the aberrant weather worldwide and one has to conclude that there is big mischief afoot.

We could discuss this on television, if you like.

Thank you for your interest in nuclear power and in Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA, website efnusa.org. We contribute to global public education about nuclear, fossil fuel, hydro and other energy sources and why and how they are important for people and the environment.

My education is in civil engineering up to the doctorate. My first career was in nuclear power to analyze complex stress problems and study topics needing research related to overall plant design. I worked in commercial nuclear power in the USA and Switzerland from 1970 through 1987. From 1990 through the present, I am working for public education for nuclear energy and nuclear medicine. This enable me to get to know nuclear physicists, nuclear engineers, climate scientists and experts in many fields around the world. Here is a list of over 700 authors with articles, PowerPoint Presentations or videos posted on efn-usa.org. I know many of these outstanding people.

When the topic of man-made global warming, man-made climate change, man-made climate disruption became something discussed by nuclear advocates, I decided that I should know enough about this topic to help nuclear advocates talk about it without making serious scientific errors. If a nuclear advocate follows the topic of fossil fuels causing man-made global warming and embraces the wrong side of this discussion, he/she would be making a mistake that advocates for nuclear power should not make.

A very special opportunity came for me when Barack Obama appointed John Holdren as his White House Science Advisor in 2009. I have known John Holdren personally since 1970, when I first met him in Palo Alto, California when he was in graduate school at Stanford University. He visited our home in Massachusetts in the 1970s and Switzerland in the 1980s. In the 2000s, we had several conversations about theoretical physics that other scientists did not completely answer. We also discussed man-made global warming.

He and I have different views about nuclear energy, fossil fuels and man-made climate change science. He says nuclear power still isn't safe enough, key Generation IV nuclear power technologies should not be developed and that the world is facing a climate catastrophe from use of fossil fuels. I look at the perfect record of radiation safety from commercial nuclear power with designs based on initial development in the USA. I look at all the benefits fossil fuels have brought humanity and can’t be replaced today or in the near future. I know that until now nature not mankind has been the cause of most of what happens to the climate on Earth, just like in the rest of the marvelous, vast universe.

Yes, mankind has had a big impact on nature going back to the time of the hunting to extinction of the mammoths and recently with the hunting to extinction of the carrier pigeon in the USA. Absolutely amazing the destruction that mankind does through wars, through extreme doctrines of religions, through actions of dictators and through blatant pollution. But is mankind capable of causing catastrophic man-made global warming, catastrophic man-made climate change, and catastrophic man-made climate disruption for the whole planet? John Holdren has said yes since the 1970s. I have been out in nature around the world. Since the 1950s, I have marveled at biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and wilderness. See all the photos and paintings on efn-usa.org and in this set of messages. I have studied the man-made global warming topic for twenty years and posted 400 related articles from all points of view. Stopping use of fossil fuels is an very serious existential decision for humanity and it must be decided based on the scientific method, not on beliefs or other unjustified methods. It also is an existential question whether we must pursue nuclear energy or not. Civilization on the only planet known to support intelligent life absolutely depends on it.

Since my goal is to contribute to global public education about all aspects of nuclear energy and nuclear medicine on efn-usa.org, I also explain the profound benefits of fossil fuels and post articles (without prejudice) on all sides of the man-made global warming topic. We encourage our readers in 120 countries to decide for themselves.

As a result of all this work since 1970, I know a lot of professionals, scientists and engineers in many fields, including all sides of the man-made global warming topic.

John Holdren sends me his articles and asks me to post them. I respectfully do so.

If the PBS TV program, White House Chronicle, would like to produce a balanced (all sides: alarmists, skeptics and luke warmers) TV program/series on man-made global warming and all the climate change events you describe in your message above, I suggest you do it with experts in this field, not this civil engineer. I could help connect you with people more knowledgeable than I on all sides of this topic in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

It would be a TV program/series worthy of your standards and PBS television.

Message 3 To: Llewellyn King Executive Producer and Host of White House Chronicle on PBS, (USA) To: John Shanahan President, Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA From: Bruno Comby Founder – President, Environmentalists for Nuclear – International, (France) Hello Llewellyn and John, On my side of the Atlantic Ocean I am rather glad, and very happy, of living now in the 21 st century in France with a comfortable climate and a high standard of living, rather than in the grand old time when the ice was deeply frozen on the Thames in London and on the Seine river in Paris all winter, with ice skating and bull contests on the ice.

General poverty, hard work, little wages and very little to eat for most of the population was the general rule in those times with little energy available to the population before the industrial revolution powered by coal in the mid 19th century.

We are now lucky to have wonderful transportation and communication systems, warm homes in winter (and cool in summer) plentiful supermarkets offering abundant and varied fruits and foods today, even if the quality of the food and the organization of society can and should be improved.

I wouldn’t like to see myself or my son and descendants having to come back to those grand old times of energy scarcity..

Even farther back in history, the entire Paris area was covered by over 1 km of ice and therefore uninhabitable. I don’t think life on Earth then was better than it is now.

We are very lucky to enjoy today a high standard of living in a highly organized society, on a wonderful planet, with amazing landscapes, plentiful food and consumer goods making life a little softer and more pleasant than it is used to be, made possible by almost two centuries of burning coal, oil and gas, and more recently much cleaner and even better nuclear energy which is clearly the only way to make our wonderful lifestyle sustainable long term. This was not the case for our grandparents who lived in a much harsher world.

It is bewildering to see that some advanced countries such as Germany would like to simply strike out clean, affordable and abundant nuclear energy, pretending they will rely on unreliable, intermittent, dilute and expensive solar and wind, but in practise continuing massively to burn dirty coal - the energy of the 19th century ! [Note: People in Europe and North America can afford the luxury of making this claim about coal.

Many others must use coal while they improve their economies, living standards and provide good education for all. John Shanahan] Especially in France, as we have no domestic resources of coal, oil and gas, but also around the world more globally, abundant and clean energy, including nuclear energy, is essential both for the protection of the environment and for the development and happiness of humanity.

There is absolutely no doubt that the climate is currently getting warmer, and absolutely no doubt that energy is vital for humanity.

There are ongoing debates about whether the warming of the climate is human-caused or a consequence of solar cycles or a spontaneous natural trend involving other side phenomenons (at all epochs climate has always been either warming or cooling and all things taken in consideration, warming is probably more enjoyable globally than cooling).

At EFN we gather all those who are in favour of nuclear energy and in favour of protecting the environment and the atmosphere, this includes members on both sides of the man-caused or not global warming discussion. We inform on energy issues.

In any case, nuclear clearly has no effect at all on the atmosphere and on the global climate, uses very little uranium (1 gram of uranium or plutonium produces as much energy as one ton of oil, gas or coal, that’s a factor of one million) to produce large amounts of the cheap and abundant energy necessary to power our wonderful modern civilisation, and to lift the poor out of poverty.

Nuclear energy is the way to go for the future in all cases.

We are lucky to have such a solution at hand.

The example to be followed is France, not Germany.

Nuclear energy will not strike out or replace coal oil and gas instantly, as any major energy transition takes at least 30 years (for a country, like France has done) or 50 years (for the world) but in any case it is vital for our future.

Nuclear energy is the only energy source that is clean, abundant, affordable, reliable (not intermittent), safe and secure, and can be deployed almost anywhere.

Abundant and cheap electricity is also the key of the transportation revolution (development of electric vehicles) which is just starting.

At my small scale, I live in a positive energy self-built large and comfortable eco-house (in the close suburbs of Paris) with solar panels on the roof producing more energy over the year than my family - my son and I - requires (but this electricity is produced mostly in summer when the sun shines, and most of my energy consumption is in winter to feed my high-efficiency heat pump for heating the house, therefore I am glad and proud of being connected to the French electric grid relying on 15% hydro and 80% nuclear electricity - therefore 95% clean and friendly to the environment) and I drive an electric car all year (will be driving it down to southern France next Monday for a month there), both powered with clean French electricity. Therefore we at EFN clearly demonstrate that the energy transition (including nuclear power) is feasible and works well.

On the other side the energy transition proposed and propagated by Germany based on intermittent renewables is just a utopia dream. It has absolutely not demonstrated it is feasible. In fact it is not, Germany continues to burn loads of dirty coal and the cost of the kWh for the consumer in Germany is now twice what it is in France, while the CO2 per kWh emissions in Germany remain about 10 times in Germany what they are in France. Intermittent energies unfortunately can not displace massive amounts of reliable (non intermittent) energies.

Paris French cities, villages, mountains, rivers, and countryside are beautiful. Cuisine and wines, great. Bicycling out in nature in France and seeing only nuclear power plants – no wind turbine farms and coal plants fed daily with 100 car unit trains like in the USA is a marvelous experience. Vive la France!

It would be interesting to see how Llewellyn King would respond if you were to show him hard data refuting, e.g., his claim of "aberrant weather worldwide." The data� show no such trends. And how he can describe London of 300 years ago as "a grand old time" is unfathomable. Do people have any idea what life was like then--of infant and child mortality rates, life expectancy at birth, or any other measures of fundamental human well being?
