Message 1 From Llewellyn King, Executive Producer and Host "White House Chronicle" on PBS (USA) To: John Shanahan Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA Dear John, Three hundred years ago the Thames in London used to freeze so hard that there were bull roasts on the ice and fairs. It was a grand old time. That tells me that there is warming but that it has been going on for a long time. What is incontrovertible today is the melting of the polar ice caps, the huge increase in the carbon load of the oceans and the slowing of the Gulf Stream --the Vega nerve of the northern hemisphere. The numbers you quote don't, to my mind, alter the gravity of the situation. Throw in, if you like, the aberrant weather worldwide and one has to conclude that there is big mischief afoot. We could discuss this on television, if you like. Best greetings, Llewellyn 1
