Some governments, non-profit organizations, the media talk about “carbon footprint,” “reducing carbon footprint,” and “serious man-made climate change” from “carbon.” That’s their code word for carbon dioxide, an essential molecule for life. Carbon is also very important in other “hydrocarbon” molecules essential for life and most of modern living. John Holdren, Science Advisor to the White House from 2009 through 2016 was committed to promoting very serious man-made climate change from carbon or carbon dioxide from fossil fuels. He did not accept people presenting scientific papers challenging the idea of very serious man-made climate change. For him and the president he served, Barack Obama, very serious man-made climate change was the most important thing for the world to focus on. They recommended stark reduction in the use of fossil fuels. For Holdren, any presentation of scientific papers questioning the scientific basis of man-made climate change was “preposterous.” That’s his message in a personal communication to John Shanahan. James Lovelock is a famous scientist in chemistry and earth science. He was especially looked up to by those who are focused on “carbon footprint” and “very serious manmade climate change.” He has many respected scientific accomplishments. He was a leading proponent of the idea that carbon dioxide from fossil fuels is causing serious man-made global warming. In 2016 at the age of 96, his thinking about predictions of very serious man-made global warming changed. In an interview with Catherine Bolado of the Bournemouth DAILY ECHO, James Lovelock said: He added that global warming proponents stated that the earth would get hotter and hotter but “they don’t really know,” and climate models are only based on what data goes into them, so it was hard to say what would happen in the future. “Don’t try and save the world, it’s pure hubris. We might be able to save Dorset. I don’t know how we do it. It’s up to us. I think it’s easier to save Dorset than the planet.” Adding: “There’s one thing to keep in mind here. We don’t need to save the planet, it’s looked after itself for four billion years. It’s always been habitable and things have lived on it, so why worry.” At 97, Lovelock ascribes the dramatic change in his once fervently alarmist beliefs to the fact that he has “grown up.” Only ten years ago – when the inventor, scientist and environmentalist was a mere spring chicken of 87 – Lovelock argued in his book The Revenge of Gaia that mankind was doomed.
