Message from the president Working Together for a Brighter Future Brazoria County Fair, First and foremost, I would like to say what an honor it is to serve as the 81st President of the Brazoria County Fair. Each year, hundreds of volunteers work tirelessly to put on the best event possible for Brazoria County. 2019 will be no different as we are working diligently to plan the best event yet.

I believe in holding true to our rich traditions but at the same time, there is nothing brighter than the future of Brazoria County. The 2019 Fair slogan is “Working Together For a Brighter Future,” and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our great county.

The 81st Brazoria County Fair will be October 11-19, 2019, and I hope you will join me there.

2018 Brazoria County Fair Scholarship winners

Scholarship awards of $4,000 each are given to selected outstanding Brazoria County 12th grade students pursuing a career in any field.

Corey Atchison, an Alvin High School graduate, is the son of Terry and Roxann Atchison. Corey plans to attend Tarleton State University to pursue a degree in Agriculture Science.

Mallori Christian, an Angleton High School graduate, is the daughter of Corey and Sandi Christian.

BCFA membership has its privileges Membership fee of $45 entitles the member to free entry into the Fair, membership meal, full voting privileges (18 years and older) and all other rights of a member of this Association.

Season Passes may be purchased for a fee of $15 for Youth (7-15) and $55 for Adult (16-up).

Lifetime Membership of $400 entitles member to all privileges of membership for life.

Non-transferable and ceases to be active at end of the Member’s lifetime.

Corporate Membership of $400 entitles member to all privileges of membership. Transferable, at the beginning of each calendar year, to a designated individual in the

corporation, and ceases to be active when the company is no longer in business.

To become a new member or to renew your membership in the Brazoria County Fair Association, Inc., you can visit our website at www.BCFA.org or come by the Fair Offices located at the front entrance of the Brazoria County Fairgrounds.

To serve on a committee, you must first become a member of the Fair Association. Secondly, complete and return a volunteer form to the Fair Office. A committee member will not be put on the mailing list to receive meeting notices until BOTH the membership and volunteer forms have been returned to the Fair Office.

New manager has long history with Brazoria County Fair

It’s a dream-come-true for Jaycie Isaacs.

She grew up in Brazoria County and participated in youth contests at the county fair since she was 3 or 4. Growing up, the Brazoria County Fair was a large part of her life.

“I showed cattle, goats and turkeys,” Isaacs said. Today, she oversees the whole thing as Brazoria County fair manager.

After graduating from Brazoswood High School in Clute, then obtaining a degree in communications and professional event man-

agement from Texas A&M, Isaacs first worked for a medical device company, planning meeting events across the country.

“The work was very logistical, and I wanted something with more flexibility and creativity – something involving the entertainment sector,” she said.

When she saw the job was available, she jumped at the chance to be in charge of the event that played a large role for her while growing up in Brazoria County. It’s quite possible that Isaacs, 25, is the youngest manager in fair history.

One of her goals is to encourage

the younger generation and families with kids – who may not know about all the fair has to offer – to come out to the fair and experience what she did growing up.

To draw in the younger generation, Isaacs is utilizing social media by engaging on Facebook and asking that everyone likes and follows the fair page. She’s having weekly giveaways, like parking passes and T-shirts, to encourage

visitors to the site. Isaacs is also reworking the website for a full rebranding of the fair.

Isaacs’ enthusiasm for the fair was evident when she explained the many ways children benefit from

“It’s a year-long commitment, where children build a connection with an animal,” she said. “They learn responsibility, accountability and discipline while caring for it.

Their year of hard work culminates when they show the animal at the fair. The same principle applies to the craft and photography contest.

The fair shows off the great skills and talents we have in Brazoria County.”

Check out all the County Fair has in store. The theme this year is “Working Together for a Brighter Future.” Jaycie Isaacs is hoping to do just that with the help of her board, staff, volunteers and thousands of area residents who will soon enter the gates of the fairgrounds at 901 S. Downing in Angleton for the biggest annual event in Brazoria County.

2018 Little Mr. and Miss winners

One of the exciting events each year at the Fair is the 4-H & FFA Calf Scramble. It will be held in the Rodeo Arena at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1113 during the rodeo.

Contestants are selected from Brazoria County FFA Chapter and 4-H Club members. They are between the ages of 12-18.

It is suggested that the participants not weigh less than 100 pounds and be in good health and

in top physical condition. “Any contestant appearing with broken limbs, etc. will automatically be disqualified and an alternate will be put in his/her place,� state the event rules.

The Fair supplies the rope halter, which must be placed on the head of the animal, behind the ears, over the bridge of the nose and under the chin.

For the safety of the animal, no

halter can be placed around its neck.

Each contestant attempts to catch and halter one of the released calves in the arena and lead it across the finish line without aid.

Once a contestant has hold of a calf, no other contestant can touch it unless it breaks away.

Winners will receive a calf to raise and exhibit at the 2020 Scramble Calf Shows.

Enjoy the Fair parade in Angleton The 2019 Brazoria County Fair Parade will win around Angleton starting at 10 a.m. on Satuday, Oct. 13.

Like in previous years, get to the parade route early to claim your spot from where you can enjoy the dozens of floats, marching bands, horse riders and the many other participants.

Some of the best spots from where you can comfortably view the parade are around the Brazoria County Courthouse. There is ample parking behind the courhouse, and the parade route is only a short walk away.

This year’s parade theme is “Working Together for a Brighter Future.”

Participants will decorate their floats based on this theme.

The parade rules state that “no political campaigning will be permitted.”

Trophies will be awarded for the float tat receives the highest points in each category.

Mutton Bustin’ at the Fair

Three days of CPRA Rodeo Finals

Mutton Bustin’ is another popular event at the Brazoria County Fair. It is held during the rodeo at the BCFA Rodeo Arena on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. and then on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. Contestants must all be 55 pounds or lighter. The age limits are 4 to 8 years old. Photos by Charles Jesse Miller Jr. The CPRA Rodeo Finals are once again at the Brazoruia County Fair. The Rodeo will start with Mutton Bustin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 and 6 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 12, and at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.

The Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) was formed in 1992 by a handful of producers and contestants. The association held its first finals in Lufkin and contributed $25,000 in added money to its first finals.

The CPRA finalist, families and fans rolled into Angleton for the 2006 finals. Hosted by the Brazoria County Fair Association, CPRA announced that the finals will be held in Angleton through the year of 2015. And then they were extended here through 2019. Enjoy this top-tier rodeo.

Tricycle Races give children a chance to compete Not everything at the fair revolves around show animals or the carnival. There are many contests for all ages and skills. One of those are the tricycle races.

This year the races will be held in the auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Registration is from noon to 1 p.m., and the registration fee is only $5.

The races start at 1.15 p.m.

The Tricycle Races are designed to give Brazoria County children an opportunity to compete and participate in an event at the Fair.

The contest is divided into the following age categories: 1 year olds • 2 year olds • 3 year olds • 4 year olds • 5 & 6 year olds There will be participation ribbons for all contestants. First-, Second-

and Third-place winners will receive trophies in each category.

Tricycles will be furnished by the fair association.

In case of a close finish, the decision of the judges will be final.

Hometown Heroes

Hometown Heroes recognized by the fair in 2018.

Again this year, the Brazoria County Fair will pay tribute to our hometown heroes, who can attend for free on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Sponsored by Dow Chemical and Olin, the fair will honor veterans, police officers, reserves, firefighters and EMS personnel, starting at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Ten Brazoria County residents who have been nominated will be recognized during the ceremony.

• After formation of the Brazoria County Fat Stock and Fair Association, the group bought a 20-acre fig orchard south of Angleton for use as fairgrounds. That property is still the home of the fair.

Senior Citizen’s Day at the Fair Senior citizens will have their own day on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when they will be entertained and served a catered meal in the auditorium from 8-11 a.m, courtesy of Dow. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 8 a.m., followed by contests, games, entertainment, fair exhinbits and lunch.

Admission is free for ages 55 and older. The auditorium is packed every year for this event, which gives seniors time to enjoy the fair.

• The history of the “modern” Brazoria County Fair begins in 1938, when Angleton Jaycees took over operation of several of the annual events.

Although no fair organization officially existed that year, Jack Phillips of West Columbia recalled that “a little exhibition of livestock was held…and the ladies showed their jams and jellies” on the courthouse lot.
