The area around (Far) Gosford Street has undergone a significant development and expansion in the last few decades. Therefore, previously among UK’s 20% most deprived neighbourhoods, the rating has improved to a more respectable place within 40%.

This proposal includes interventions for the major urban space which will further strive to eventually classify this neighbourhood as highly regarded, well presented and connected within the city context.

all major development in the vicinity of the site has been directly related to Coventry University. as a result, locals have been pushed out of the city centre. the students living or attending university in the area are lacking i.e. an adequate offer of co-workspaces, exhibitions, chill out spaces or themed markets. data reference: Edina Digimap

Coventry’s city centre is heavily populated by students (>75%) due to the central location of Coventry University. This has pushed locals farther into the outskirts in recent years. As a result, housing prices in the centre are rising unreasonably whereas quality of existing housing is degrading. data reference: Datashine UK

The North end of the site is only affected by shadows from the university car park, bordering in the South-West.

Through majority of the year unaffected, in winter after 12pm, the car park casts a significant shadow onto the site and possibly the proposed building.

IMMEDIATE URBAN AREA

part of the urban proposal’s redevelopment of the local transport network, this foresees the integration of narrower streets across main pedestrian / school routes.

Additionally, road crossings (zebra) will be raised to pavement level, giving pedestrians priority within the urban context. These changes will automatically slow down and reduce traffic and goes along with a legal reduction in speed limits. The gained space will be used for a physically separated bike and micromobility lane. In wider streets, an extra bus lane should be included.

Looking ahead, a light-rail tram loop is expected to shift thousands of commuters from a private car to public transport systems. In turn, this will accellerate adoption and profitability of “last-mile” transportation - a.k.a. micromobility.

SITE ANALYSIS SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS design influences 1. The site is located between Gosford Street and Gulson Road and is mostly flat. Coventry’s historic River Sherbourne is situated on the East perimeter of the site.

-> opportunity to locate a possible open space courtyard and restaurants towards a regenerated river 2. Major influx of people from the North side of the site (Gosford Street) -> the main entrance should be oriented towards this direction 3. Residential buildings (student accommodation) in immediate vicinity on the East side -> consider views into the proposed building and privacy concern for people living there 4. Considering the lack of major green areas in and around Coventry’s City Centre, this separate access to the site presents an opportunity to create a park for the large population in the area 5. Short distance (5 minute walk) from FarGo Village -> flow of people from the existing location to the newly proposed addition 6. Coventry University buildings border the site on the West -> potential spike in users during lunch times and evenings and mild/balanced influx throughout the day site challenges and opportunities

strict division of functions: the retail / market and event space stretches along the river and main street. the residential part is separated and faces south. the two functions are linked through the central light flooded atrium.

an overhang frames the entrance and is visible from afar across the road. the roof terrace provides views of the city centre’s sky line including the cathedral. the building transitions the lower building on Far Gosford Street to the high Uni building on Gosford

Massing Option 2 - apartments which would be located on the top floor receive plenty of sunlight.

- sunlight reaches into the diagonal atrium all year around, amplified through reflection.

- it becomes obvious that the new residential buildings as part of the site development placed towards the south of the proposal, needs to be positioned further away from the South facade, since in winter, the lower parts would only receive 1-2 hours of sunlight per day.

Massing Option 3 - the slanted roof recieves ample sunlight and would therefore be perfectly suited for photovoltaic or solar thermal panels - the terrace on the east side is slightly overshadowed by upper stories, therefore only gets between 1 and ~4 hours of sunlight in winter, depending on the location on the terrace, as seen above

The central courtyard is protected from the main road, directed towards the river behind.

Building users are able to see across the building through the courtyard, creating a transparent and democratic atmosphere.

Required Spaces

spaces within the building transition from public to semi-private to private, increasing in height.

Visitors are able to roam freely within the ground floor public areas, play & socialise. The first floor offers a market and a private tech media lab. On the second floor, start-ups can rent permanent office space, where individual young professionals and students will also be able to use the facilities to work and study.

The third floor will serve as a roof terrace and access to the dwellings, which span over two floors.

The most striking aspect of International House Sydney is that six above ground levels are constructed entirely from engineered or cross laminated timber, including floors, columns, walls, roof, lift shafts, egress stairs and bracing bays, supported by a single ground retail level of conventional concrete structure.

Case Study Erasmus University Renovation | Rotterdam

Stairs bridge the large void forming the Atrium which is flooded with natural light. Immediate spaces around are used for circulation, informal meeting and elements of biophilic design.

The staircases enclosures and fire separations that divide the building are made of glass, greatly enhancing spatial continuity between the western and eastern parts of the building.

Wood Innovation Centre, Canada | Michael Green Architecture

This 8 storey building measures 30m in height. It was envisioned to showcase the possibilities of engineered mass timber products (GLT and CLT) in mid- to high- rise structures.

Glulam Columns are spaced 7m apart with Glulam beams spanning accross 1-way and CLT panels laid atop perpendicularly.

Urban development, architecture and urban housing in the Netherlands.

The addition can be seen as a prototype for the further densification of the existing city. It adds a roof life to the city. It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower in cost than the equivalent ground price for the building.

A study to test the visual recognition and perception of facial details by the University of Washington and the University of California found that after 8 metres, face perception diminishes. At about 50 metres, accurate face identification for people with normal vision drops to zero. https://innocenceproject.org/can-you-recognize-someone-from-hundreds-of-feet-away/

The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys increase the feeling of a village on top of a building. Parapet walls with windows surround the new village.

Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop lifestyle. It creates a crown on top of the house.

- ensure the roof terrace (if public) does not interfere with adjacent upper storeys of the apartments - prevent overlooking - place high windows only on the walls facing the terrace

- strictly separate public and residential circulation, with a possibility of the residential stair case being accessible from every storey only in case of emergency evacuation

- the secure storage area is a great place for visitors to leave their jackets and bags before heading to work

- provide a main central stair in addition to the protected stair cases, to separate public circulation and i.e. delivery / waste disposal / worker movement - place toilets on every storey

- place a reception desk on either end of the Atrium passage to control the influx of visitors to the building and increase security; prevent burglary.

the street facing facade keeps an equal distance of the pavement to the road; the building steps back from the 7 storey car park to prevent overshadowing; the river-side facade angle provides a view of the river and park, therefore attracts visitors to the site

the Atrium allows unobstructed movement and provides natural light to all spaces within the building; its shape was carefully crafted by mapping views of a passerby walking along Gosford Street - slowly opening the view through towards nature

residential units on the top storeys recieve ample natural light; they are stepped back from the noisy road and feature an unobstructed view of the park

the upper storeys overhang towards the main street - providing views towards the Cathedral, making the building visible from farther up Gosford Street and passersby feel as part of the building and feel invited to enter. The overhang towards the river frames the view South and creates a comfortable and safe microclimate for the Café.

upon approaching [The Atrium] on the main route from the city centre, firstly, an insight of the open vertical Atrium space is granted. Moving farther, the view slowly opens up, revealing more of the void space including elements of biophilic design. As pedestrians reach the entrance area, the complete view through the diagonal passage opens up, connecting the greenery from the North West corner to the river and greenery on the South East corner, effectively inviting passers-by to explore and experience a rare green patch within Coventry city centre.

vertical windows prevail in surrounding buildings. The shape of my proposal’s openings take inspiration from the University building opposite (#2) by adopting their ratio of 0.22 = W/H. The street front will remain consistent by implementing the distances between windows as seen in #4 - student accommodation (2.0 metres) Additionally, heights of window sills and heads line up with those of #6 - William Morris University Buiding.

Central Atrium Space

1.1 the large vertical space promotes air flow (stack ventilation) and therefore drags warm air up and out through vents in the glass roof.

Kinetic Facade - Shading

Co-Working Space

2.1 dynamically adjustable shading panels are installed on the South-West facade. Due to its orientation, a hybrid between strictly horizontal or vertical shading has been chosen

3.1 Work spaces were placed on South, East and West facades, arranged close to window openings and the atrium core, providing natural light, largely eliminating the need for artificial lighting.

2.2 the panles can be manually adjusted for maximum user comfort.

3.2 the large floor-to-ceiling-height and open plan arrangement allow for sufficient natural ventilation, even at full capacity.

Heating / Cooling

8.1 a ground source heat pump is used to utilise the underground’s stable temperatures for cooling in summer and heating in winter
