The world that we live in today is very hard to swallow at times. Whether it's one issue or the next, this year more than ever in recent times, the bad news seems to keep rolling in. In a city such as Portland, Oregon, where tensions are high and eyes have been watching for months from around the world, one is left to wonder how can architecture help any of the worlds largest issues that we face today? How can one building in the humble downtown of Portland possibly facilitate unrectifiable change through collaboration and innovation? That is what this project is trying to answer.

The ultimate intent of this project is to efficiently orchestrate the continued flourishing of human societies of all kinds in the face of changing ecological and social conditions. It is meant to be a space that unconventionally brings people of all walks of life together, to not only learn from each other but to grow symbiotically with their environment. The idea that we set our own limits in this world is one that an International House, and place of this standard should alleviate, it should do nothing but refute this notion, always pushing users to a more meaningful future. The maintenance of social customs, structures, and values must not only occur but also desirably be supported if monumental activities are to take place in this project and the design will aim to do just that. Through a people oriented design approach, this project will continuously inform beneficial action from its users while always leaving room for their own creativity.

VISION STATEMENT

The US-EU International & Public House will be a place that is readily curated to re-enchant the world both by bearing the marks and scars of time and history, while also pushing the boundaries on sustainability and unprecedented innovation.

VORTEX

UNITY

TIME

REGENERATIVE

The notion of a vortex is one that has perplexed the world for centuries. It is one of the most common forms found in nature, but it also seems to be one of the most profound. The movement around a center radial focal point can be seen in many elements of our world including in space. The energy at the heart of the vortex is what this project inherently attempted to mimic. Many vortexes are reported to bring feelings of peace, harmony, balance, and tranquility, while others are believed to promote personal reflection, deep insight, and a clear mind. This is what our project aimed to emulate throughout our process.

Definitely, creating a space that was connected to the essence of its context.

Our world needs unity now more than ever. The year of 2020, brought our entire globe to a standstill due to the Covid-19 virus. It taught us so much about not only ourselves, but also about how much being together really means to all of us. The pandemic allowed the world to reconnect in a different way, forming a new found love for each other. Our world was also forced to face the rash truth about racism and police brutality in the United States after multiple deaths of African American individuals at the hands of those tasked with protecting our society and its values. This was the second pandemic, which we all know has always been an epidemic here on U.S. soil. With all of these events piled up, the US-EU International and Public Houses took the monumental opportunity to become a beacon of inspiration, setting a new standard for what the built environment can do for each and everyone of us. Our project aimed to carefully curate conditions in which all walks of life could flourish and continue to evolve, together.

The concept of time is constant, its effect are felt by all, living and non-living. The urban fabric, buildings, and space in general are not exempt from this rule.

With this in mind, the design focused on creating experiences which will withstand the test of time, integrating formal and informal elements which are adaptable as time goes on and the world we live in continues to change. The needed spaces within the US-EU International and Public Houses may change over time, but the design accounts for this making it possible for them to transform as necessary. Our climate is changing, and for a design to withstand this test it must respond not just to the environmental challenges now, but also those that will come in the future. The concept of time for this project means that the needs of the present and future were both deeply considered in the process.

For architecture to be regenerative, it must always be designed with unpredictability in mind. Humans, their artifacts, and their culture are all inherently apart of their own ecosystems that desire to be positively engaged through the built environment. Development and design alike are both an ongoing participatory + reflective process, that when done correctly, allow humans to mutually live in a supportive symbiosis with their social and biophysical environments.

Ultimately, the built environment that we have come to know today, isn't going to cut it anymore, our world and the people that inhabit it deserve better. With that in mind, a regenerative design approach will only allow the built environment to grow anew. In the future, buildings and cities will be designed so that they regenerate lost ecosystems while always being rooted in the aspirations of their context. This will define our new world.

A proposed new block development and public park, breathing new life into the waterfront and strengthening connections.

PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY

The SITE is located adjacent to the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Morrison Bridge, in the heart of downtown Portland. The urban setting creates opportunity to strengthen connections with the existing urban fabric and waterfront, breathing new life into the city.

EXISTING TRAFFIC PATTERNS

PROPOSED TRAFFIC PATTERNS

The existing traffic pattern from Naito Pkwy onto the Morrison Bridge was analyzed to identify if an alternative was a viable option where one, or both ramps could be eliminated.

The traffic pattern without the ramps from Naito Pkwy onto the Morrison Bridge was analyzed and ultimately deemed a viable solution.

In proposing this solution, an opportunity to develop and beautify the reclaimed space became apparent.

Moving people through our urban context and into the heart of our project, while simultaneously pulling the life of the city street up vertically towards the sky.

Connecting the downtown city center with the Naito Waterfront Parkway through the use of "green corridor", pedestrian friendly streets.

The glue between the two becomes our proposed park that serves as the meeting point for the city by all means of transportation.



The public realm is only successful when it is shared with everyone. The creation of a public park did not displace, instead it reimagined what home in Portland should look like. In moving the existing surface parking underground, the space was reclaimed and beautified interconnecting with the urban fabric and waterfront. Keeping in mind the impact surface runoff has on the ecosystem of the Willamette River, the park also works to collect and treat rainwater.
