Johanna Molineus Architects is a London based practice, founded by Johanna back in 2000, with a profound commitment to the city in which we work. From estates and family homes to art institutions, galleries and retail properties, as well as developments we tailor our expertise to fit the specific needs of our clients.

We work to ensure that every project we undertake is finished to the highest quality, whilst ensuring minimum disruption not only to our clients but also to the communities in which they live and work.

Our projects seamlessly blend flawless design with cutting-edge technical acumen to create buildings that respect and understand their heritage whilst honouring their ambition.

NORTH HILL PRIVATE RESIDENCE

This project involved an ambitious extension to a historic Walter Segal property in Highgate, London. In the spirit of Segal and the self-build ethos, the project utilises a prefabricated CLT (cross laminated timber) structure. The form takes queues from the sloped nature of the site, stepping down and opening up to the garden.

This project involved the transformation of two flats into one luxurious and timeless 2 bedroom, penthouse apartment. The space forms an elegant backdrop for the clients extensive collection of art and design pieces, utilising a warm, neutral palette to create a cohesive feel throughout.

PORTLAND ROAD 2021 PRIVATE RESIDENCE

Renovation and rear extension of an existing four storey Victorian terraced house with roof terrace. The project involved a one tuned reorganisation of the internal layout, stairs and floor-plates to produce a highly crafted family home. We lowered and opened up the lower ground floor to provide a sociable and spacious living, dining and kitchen space which opens out to the courtyard designed collaboratively with George Cullis.

RUTLAND COURT PRIVATE RESIDENCE

This project saw a new mansard roof extension as well as a complete reconfiguration of the internal spaces to provide a clean layout with generous family living spaces and new roof terrace facing onto Hyde Park. The penthouse is characterised by a minimal material palette and detailing to accentuate the luxurious marble finishes and brass details.

CHAPTER TITLE 23

This project involved the facade retention, a full new basement, strip out and full refurbishment. The design focusses on natural light to ensure the spaces feel bright and airy. This was achieved by utilising double height spaces, feature glazing and lightwells to the basement. A white neutral palette helps to bounce and flood the interiors with light.

This project saw a new, full basement below the existing property and garden, with a large inner courtyard. The design centres on natural light and achieving this throughout the property and the basement. Original, exposed brickwork and timber finishes bring texture and warmth to this minimal and monochrome design.

ST JAMES GARDEN PRIVATE RESIDENCE

This property had a unique and complicated planning history and required a full internal remodel and spatial design. The clients brief was to design a family home which integrated their multicultural background. The project was very design driven and our team worked very closely with the clients.

ONSLOW SQUARE PRIVATE RESIDENCE

JMA were involved in the full gut refurbishment and eave extension of this Penthouse overlooking Onslow Square. Skylights and a bespoke lime wash wall finish create an atmospheric interior. Externally, a wrap around roof terrace enjoys views of South Kensington.

This ambitious project involved a double rear two-storey extension to amalgamate two separate properties to form one large family home. The clients sought a space to showcase their impressive art and sculpture collection with an open plan for modern family life.

This project involved transforming a Grade II historic bank to a commercial photography gallery. The focus was on restoring and highlighting the existing, rich material palette to create a versatile and beautiful exhibition space for Iconic Images.

This was a collaborative project with Bernar Venet, working to design a unique and bespoke exhibition space for clients to explore and experience his art and furniture pieces. Albemarle Street lies within the Mayfair conservation area and both John Martin Gallery and Aquazzura are within a Grade II listed building. The brief was to refurbish the exterior as well as assisting both clients with the interior architecture.

LOCATION

We were approached by a young and up and coming gallery from South Africa to help them identify a space and design a new gallery. A successful negotiation with the Royal Brompton Hospital Trust guaranteed our client the space and the full refurbishment included major structural alterations and a double height extension to display larger artworks. We remain involved on an ongoing basis to assist with curating exhibitions.

JOHANNA

BIOGRAPHY

Johanna Molineus established her architecture practice in London in 2002 after working in Tokyo for Arata Isozaki, in Berlin for Dominique Perrault, and in Paris for Jean Nouvel.

She earned her BA at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, her Masters at the Technical University in Vienna, and is a registered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a fellow at the German Chambers of Architects and registered at the British Institute of Interior Design.

Marrying this international design experience with in-depth local knowledge and a font of international cultural references, Johanna’s practice is highly respected for its integrity, transparency, and ability to run multi-faceted developments with a calm professionalism – on time and to budget. With her trademark attention to detail, Johanna’s elegant, architecturally ingenious and exquisitely rendered work has won clients from all over the world, as well as earning the goodwill of local planning and conservation departments.

Johanna is also respected for her knowledge of, and passionate commitment to, the arts. She has designed public and private galleries for national institutions and individual collectors, and art plays a huge role in her personal and professional life.
