The Sun Prairie Area School District holds a place in the nation as one of the most innovative and progressive school districts. The single factor that has led to this reputation is the quality of the staff who serve our children every day. Our staff lead some of the most advanced programming anywhere. There are too many to list in full, but some examples include our Mandarin Chinese and other foreign language programming, our computer science programming, our outstanding Leonard-Witte, Assistant Superintendent Teaching, Learning and Equity; drama program, our personalization Stephanie Superintendent Brad Saron, and Janet Rosseter, Assistant Superintendent Operations and co-teaching instructional strategies, and our AVID programming, not to mention our strong core curricular offerings. Taken as collection of opportunities and innovative programming, we call this The Sun Prairie Experience.

What exactly does this mean? Event calendars, resources for families, newsletters, menus, community information and more can be found on the website. Each school has its own website accessible through the homepage.

INFINITE CAMPUS PARENT PORTAL Each parent/guardian is granted a Parent Portal account for their children. The portal gives access to grades, assignment due dates, attendance, paying fees, paying food accounts and more.

EMAIL, PHONE OR TEXTS Families can choose to be contacted via email, phone, voice or text message. In addition to school newsletters and messaging, we will contact you in emergency situations such as weather closings or building emergencies.

FACEBOOK The Facebook page offers regular event updates, student activities, school closings, timely information, and is the place that we showcase the great things happening in our District.

PEACHJAR FLYERS The District’s electronic flyer system allows flyers to be emailed rather than sent home in a backpack. Families of our students are automatically signed up to receive flyers. Anyone can visit a school’s website, click on the Peachjar icon and view all active flyers.

COMMUNITY NEWSLETTERS It is important to us to keep the community informed. We offer several newsletters (both mailed and electronic) throughout the year that showcase our staff, our students and the important work being done across the district. What are we doing to address the space issue at the High School, the condition of Prairie Phoenix Academy Building, Ashley Field, and more?

The Secondary School Space Planning Committee (SSSPC) has been meeting since February 2018 to address these issues. This group meets twice per month and has spent time evaluating the existing needs, listening to the community, exploring options and will provide a recommendation to the School Board in December.

The tentative timeline for a secondary solution to be brought to the community to vote is Spring 2019.

The meetings are the first and third Wednesday of each month from 6 – 8:30 pm and are open to the public.

Watch for a community survey in September! We are looking forward to learning more about the community’s interest as we evaluate secondary space options.

We are excited to open the doors and share the schools with the Sun Prairie community. Stop by for the Ribbon cutting and selfguided tour on August 28th (Token Springs) and August 29th (Meadow View). The layouts of the two schools are essentially identical except for the additional space for the Early Learning Resource Center which will be located at Token Springs.

DID YOU KNOW? Our District School Nutrition Department serves an average of 1,000 breakfasts and over 4,000 lunches per day. Our staff of 43 employees and 4 substitutes ensures that our kids are served a healthy breakfast and lunch each school day. Speaking of healthy….We served over 38,250 bananas and 1,440 lbs of broccoli during the 2017-18 school year. You may even be surprised to find that we offer salads three times per week at all school levels.

DID YOU KNOW? Each school year there are over 85,000 visits to our school nurse offices. Our school health services team is made up of two District Health Nurses and a Health Assistant at each school building. Together we work to remove health related learning barriers, and create a healthy and safe learning environment for all children. Our department offers training opportunities for both staff and students to help them be prepared to respond to health emergencies, including CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed classes.

DID YOU KNOW? In the mid 1990’s, our Technology Department had 2 staff members. Technology was delivered to students via a school bus that traveled to the elementary schools on a rotating basis. The bus had about 24 Apple IIe desktop computers, 5 in. floppy drives and monitors all secured with velcro. Students would board the bus to use the computers. There was an electrical hookup from the bus to the building.

Between the end of the regular school year in June, until late August, we hold classes for our elementary, middle, upper middle, and high school students. You will find students and teachers working together and having fun at seven of our district schools.

We are particularly pleased that the majority of our Summer School teachers and all of our support staff are in-district staff members. This is a real benefit for our students and our teachers to continue to work together throughout the year. Every year we ask our teachers to use new and creative ways to engage our students. We encourage you to watch for registration information on our website and Facebook. We are always excited to welcome our students to Summer School. It is an exciting learning experience.

DID YOU KNOW? The Sun Prairie High School Aquatic Center has a 25 yard, 8 lane swimming pool. The water is kept at 80-82 degrees and is disinfected via salt and liquid chlorination as well as a UV system. The pool is equipped with a Colorado Timing System as well as a state of the art scoreboard.

During the school day the pool is busy with physical education and lifeguarding classes. The Sun Prairie Cardinal Swim and Dive teams practice before and after school. In the evening typically from 6-9 pm the age group swim programs are practicing in the pool.

Be sure to check the pool calendar for open swim and lap swim times. We hold 2 lanes open for lap swimming Monday - Friday 6-9 pm unless there are swim meets scheduled.

The program begins in 8th grade and supports our students with career exploration, community building, habits for success, interview preparation, college tours, writing personal statements and applying to colleges, applying for financial aid and scholarships, transitioning to a college classroom and navigating a college syllabus. DID YOU KNOW? Started in 1989, the Sun Prairie Business & Education Partnership (BEP) is a group of educators and community business people who focus on uniting schools and businesses to help students prepare for their futures. Initially starting with just a couple of programs, the group now runs 13-15 projects every year. Every project that BEP has sponsored has come from a teacher/administrator who saw a need to get the business community involved. BEP members provide their time to assist in our schools with programs like Reading Buddies, GRIT, Adopt-a-School, Reality Rocks, and more.

In the Reading Buddy program, a BEP member is partnered with a first grade classroom and reads to students once a month. Students receive their own copies of the book to take home to create their own home libraries. In the fall of 2018, all first grades in the district had BEP Reading Buddies, even the two new elementary schools. SP BEP Vision: Preparing and supporting today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.

DID YOU KNOW? All Sun Prairie School District school buildings have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification the last three years, with many certifications dating back to 2009. Buildings are rated on EPA’s 1-100 scale, with scores 75 or higher required for eligibility for ENERGY STAR certification. Certification signifies that the buildings perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. Sun Prairie school buildings scores range from 79 to 98, with an average over 88. Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
