Letter from the Chair Since 2020, we have all been asked to step up, and change our normal. With restrictions and lockdowns, shutdowns, and everything in between, it has become so discouraging for us all. The truth is, we have all been taking it one day at a time, figuring out next steps, rushing to our next Zoom meeting, ordering all our necessities online and just ‘getting by’. Everything we do together is now facilitated by technology. Including our London Music Week and our two award shows.

While the way we are celebrating the accomplishments of our artists and acts has changed during the pandemic, the four pillars of the FCLMA – preserve, celebrate, encourage and support - has never waivered. We are still preserving our culture with Canada’s only city centric Music Hall of Fame; we continue to educate and encourage musicians to grow with our handcrafted workshops and Soundcheck for Success series.

We support performances both live and streamed and we celebrate our wildly vibrant musicians.

London’s strong musical community has accomplished incredible things during these unprecedented times. They have pursued creative solutions to keep making music together, safely; have continued to publish compositions, and recordings, to produce videos and to stream concerts for our community at large. Their tenacity has become more inspirational than ever, and collectively they have forged a new path forward that will change the landscape of the London music scene forever. Without the drive and determination of our vast community of artists and musicians, we would not even have an award show to celebrate their accomplishments. Quite frankly, the 2021 FCLMA’s would not be possible with you – the musicians, artists, and creatives. Thank you!

Lastly, our work would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers and leaders of our committees. Your support will continue to be crucial through what promises to be a new world that we are about to enter. With our musicians, volunteers, supporters, and donors by our side, we will continue innovating, collaborating, educating, and making music together. We are committed to forging ahead with our mission and to continue providing London and surrounding area a world-class experience in music as industry leaders. WELCOME TO THE 2021 FOREST CITY LONDON MUSIC AWARD WEEK The Forest City London Music Awards is built around four pillars that form the foundation of our organization: Preserving, Celebrating, Encouraging and Supporting the music community. Our Award Week will again be virtual due to the ongoing pandemic and the ever-changing restrictions.

Our celebrating kicks off with the “Classical/Jazz/World” Gala Sunday June 6, a virtual event. the “Rock/Pop and so much more” Gala will occur in the same format on Saturday June 12. Both events celebrate and recognize the annual achievements of London and surrounding area musicians while providing a world class show.

Our educational component continues to flourish. This year we again offer a week devoted to streamed seminars; “Soundcheck for Success,” features music and industry professionals who are willing to share their passion and knowledge. High school age musicians are offered two great opportunities. The FCLMA Battle of the High School will be offered on two nights June 10 & 11 and offers prizes to help young musicians kick start a career in music. In addition, the Ken Palmer Bursary is granted to two graduating high school students, (one from the public board and one from the Catholic board) who are pursuing music in a post secondary education.

The FCLMA continues its goal of preserving London’s musical heritage by inducting 5 acts into the Hall of Fame and one Lifetime Achievement recipient. Our volunteer tour guides are anxious to get back into the Hall of Fame and share stories about all the amazing musicians who have been inducted since the 2002.

The Forest City London Music Week could not happen without the support of our generous sponsors who return annually and donate to this grass roots organization with simple priorities: encouraging and supporting London musicians, promoting music education, preserving the musical history of London and celebrating London, a true music city.

The land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendt, Attawandaron and Lenape Indigenous peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties, including Treaty 6, the London Township Treaty.

The Nomination Process The FCLMA Board of Directors appoints a Vote Lead who guides the process. The Board purposely takes a hands off approach to avoid any conflicts of interest. The Vote Lead is responsible for pulling together a team of Nomination Leads for each category. Nomination leads must be active in the London & area music community with specific expertise in regards to their assigned category. Each nomination lead is required to establish a committee of at least four people. Nominations received from the public are gathered by each team who are then tasked with coming up with a list of 6 nominees who meet the requirements of the category. This list is then published on the FCLMA voting site where the public chooses the winner.

ERICH KNAPP Erich Knapp is the Music Director at First St. Andrew's United Church and Conductor and Co-Director at Pride Men's Chorus London. He moved to London after serving as artist-in-residence, organist, and director of music at churches across the United States. He has led professional and church choirs on six international performance tours, and as an organ recitalist he has given organ recitals in eight countries.

CAMILA MONTEFUSCO Originally from Brazil, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Violin, Camila Montefusco (Mezzo-Soprano) pursued her passion for operatic studies at Western University. under the tutelage of mezzo-soprano Patricia Green. She was selected for the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions in the Toronto region, and is currently one of the London Opera Guild scholarship recipients.

MATTHEW BERMUDEZ Matthew Bermudez studied at the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Born in London, he graduated from both St. Mary’s Choir and Orchestra Program and Catholic Central High School’s Music Program. He is also a chorister for the Primus: Amabile Men’s Choir and was involved with the National Boychoir of Canada in their inaugural international tour.

Although MICHAEL VANHEVEL enjoys music across all genres, Michael often cites his love for entertainers like Dean Martin and Bobby Darin for inspiring his easy going attitude and fun-loving, humbled swagger on stage. His vocal power, control and tone however brings to mind the commanding presence and flair of the Chairman himself; Frank Sinatra. He performs internationally in concerts, self-written shows, collaborative projects and various recordings, in between spending time at home in Petrolia, Ontario with his beautiful wife and talented painter Keely, and his wonderful son Clark.

RACHELLE COURTNEY AND NEVIN CAMPBELL Courtney graduated from Toronto’s Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts with a musical theatre diploma. She followed that with a degree from Humber College, where she met her husband, pianist Nevin Campbell. A move to London for studies at Western’s Don Wright music faculty led to Courtney and Campbell becoming part of the Forest City jazz scene.

While they often perform together, Campbell also works with other Londonregion singers and is the pianist with the Mississauga-based Basically Basie big band.

MAGISTERRA SOLOSISTS

Performing a Musical collage MAGISTERRA SOLOISTS is a bold Canadabased chamber ensemble which unites artists from across the globe, under the direction of acclaimed violinist, AnnetteBarbara Vogel. Magisterra engages a broad and vibrant repertoire ranging from known masterworks to new and commissioned works by Canadian composers. In tandem with their performance schedule, the members of the ensemble passionately dedicate their time to bringing music to young people through outreach concerts and educational programs

Following the success of their ‘hit’ single “Sea Shanty” we are honored to present the Middlesex London Health Unit performing Blue Rodeo’s “It Hasn't Hit Me Yet.” The last year and a half have been overwhelming for all of us, but especially for frontline workers like those at the Middlesex London Health Unit. There is nothing like music to lighten one’s burden, so these folks are excited to take a break from the seriousness of every-day life in COVIDland and perform tonight. MARK SWAN is a 29-year-old musician born and raised in London, Ont. He has always had a passion for music ever since he began playing drums at the age of eight. As a London native, he went to UWO to study music (‘17) and has been working professionally and touring across North America since 2012. He has released two EPs and a Live Album which you can find on all major streaming platforms and is working on a full-length album to be released in 2022. THE KEN PALMER MUSIC BURSARY 2021 The Forest City London Music Awards through this bursary program shows strong commitment and encouragement to young musicians graduating from high school to support their post-secondary music education goals.The Bursary was founded to honour the late Ken Palmer (Oct. 5, 1948 - Oct. 30, 2013) who was an integral part of the London music scene for more than 40 years as a performer with the Dixie Flyers (FCLMA Hall of Fame), Artistic Director of Home County Music & Art Festival (15 years), and as a music teacher/mentor to young musicians. Since 2016, there have been ten $1000 bursaries awarded including this year's winners Angela Metron and Kate McLeod.

The FCLMA congratulates these outstanding young students and hopes this award will help them with their future success in music. Tax receiptable donations can be made at www.fclma.ca/bursary.

KATE MCLEOD is a Grade 12 student at Woodstock Collegiate Institute and will be attending Western University in the fall.

She has played the alto saxophone since the age of 12, and picked up the baritone saxophone at 14. She has always had an interest in jazz, and in grade 11 she had the opportunity to be in the TVDSB Honour Jazz Band on the baritone sax. At the age of 16,she decided to learn the double bass in school and became very fond of it. Kate is planning to pursue a music degree and is excited to grow in both classical and jazz on the saxophone.

ANGELA METRON is a grade 12 student at Catholic Central High School. She will be pursuing a music degree. Angela has been accepted by a number of universities and had yet to decide which school she will attend

Known for their antics on stage and powerful performances, the London, Ontario-based group LOST IN JAPAN - singer Addison Johnson, guitarist Chris Hoekstra, bassist Nolan Peake and drummer James Wiseman - are MIA (Music Industry Arts) graduates. Their recently released track "Troy" was produced by Juno award winning producer, Dan Brodbeck at Sugar Shack Studios in London. Glued together by a tight friendship and mutual rivalry the band loves what they do and plan to continue to grow and expand their sound. As the band moves forward, they will connect with as many people as possible. Expanding from their hometown they are spreading their infectious hooks and sing along songs to all of southern Ontario and the rest of the world.

Patrick James Clark PATRICK JAMES CLARK is going all in on 2021. 2020 was a trying time for all artists, but it provided an unprecedented opportunity to reflect and refine. Clark did just that by taking a deep dive into his song writing craft and working tirelessly to dial in his vocal sound. He left 2020 with an entire catalogue of new music. Clark’s forthcoming release 'For The Record' only further solidifies his brand and style within the country music scene. Taking elements from artists like Old Dominion and Thomas Rhett, the stage is set for a break out year.

Leanne Mayer

Hailing from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, London is where LEANNE MAYER established her musical roots. Learning ukulele, she quickly ascended from local solo singer/songwriter sweetheart to a London lounge pop queen. Backed by a full band, Leanne Mayer’s sound consists of jazzy undertones accompanied by a unique blend of show tune cabaret and a smooth lounge vibe. She sold out both her Kirkland Lake and London release parties for her highly acclaimed debut E.P. “Bittersweet Remedy” all within just under two years! Her music is regularly featured on CBC London and she is a frequent guest on CHRW 94.9 Radio Western with Howie Zowie. Nothing is out of reach for Leanne Mayer. Moving forward with a full band, Leanne Mayer is laying the groundwork for big things to come.

King Cruff KING CRUFF was born in London but grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. He started out wanting to be a reggae artist but found he was more skilled at hip hop. Hip hop did not have a strong culture in Kingston but when he returned to London, he discovered himself as an artist. He quickly knew what he wanted to talk about and what message he wanted to deliver to a wide audience. The foundation of his music is hip-hop but he tends to throw in elements of reggae, dance hall, disco and funk. His stage act reflects his Jamaican upbringing. In Jamaica, going on stage means energy and theatrics showing them you “want to vibe with them as much as they want to vibe with you.”

Typo TYPO is an established hip hop artist from London, Ontario Canada, who has opened for the likes of Apathy, Obie Trice, RA The Rugged Man, Kool G Rap and many others. Typo and King Cruff collaborated on “Concrete Crowns” in 2021.

C.J. Lee Australian born Blues & Roots singer/songwriter, guitarist and banjo player C.J. LEE is known for his soulful and energetic live shows. In 2020 at The International Blues Challenge he earned a semi-finalist place, he has also been nominated for best Blues Act by FCLMA. He has toured North America, UK and Australia and has recently released his third record " Hitchcock Sequel" on a limited edition red vinyl.

Thunder Queens THUNDER QUEENS are London’s youngest two-piece, writing heavy, fast, and fun songs together in their bedroom jam space. Influenced by The White Stripes, Joan Jett, Queen, The Ramones, and Led Zeppelin, these tiny powerhouses cut their teeth at the London Girls Rock Camp and Call the Office. At just 11 and 12-years old, they are busy experimenting with big sound and strong vocals, and are stoked to have just recorded their first EP. 2 0

LONDON MUSIC HALL OF FAME The London Music Hall of Fame (LMHOF), curated by the FCLMA, is Canada’s only city specific music hall of fame. Over 40 London and area musical acts have been inducted displaying London’s musical depth from opera and big band to country, rock and heavy metal. Each year a committee of dedicated volunteers is given the task of sorting through the nominees and choosing the honorees for that year. Nominations come from a variety of sources: committee members, our board of directors and most commonly, from the public. The criteria for nomination are simple: The artist needs to be connected to London either born or raised here or spent a good portion of their career here. Their career needs to date back at least 25 years.

Beyond that, the criteria are flexible because so many different styles of music and definitions of success are considered.

The nominations we receive are sometimes merely a name but, in some cases, we are provided a binder of information. Committee members then take on the task of summarizing, researching, and presenting on each nominee. Over the course of numerous meetings and lively discussions the list is narrowed down. Nominated artists are revisited each year, the resulting list is long and full of deserving nominees with well over 30 nominees at present. Once a consensus is reached within the committee, our inductees are chosen. This year we have chosen to induct 5 varied acts, a violinist, two bands, a producer and a singing cowboy.

Inductee Alf Tibbs

2021 Inductee Earl Heywood Earl (Carlyle) Heywood, born in Exeter in 1917, was a singersongwriter, guitarist, and broadcaster. Along with Wilf Carter and Hank Snow, Heywood is considered one of the pioneers of Canadian country music. Dubbed 'Canada's No. 1 Cowboy Singer,' he is also regarded as one of the leading country musicians in Canadian radio. Heywood learned guitar at age 10, but he began his career playing tenor euphonium with the Exeter Brass Band. He served in the army during World War II, and his experiences were expressed in the song ‘Living in the Army,' which became the theme of his first radio show on CFCO in Chatham in 1941.

In 1942 he relocated to station CKNX in Wingham, where he remained for the next four decades. As lead vocalist and musical director for the weekly series CKNX Barn Dance, Heywood quickly emerged as the station's highest-rated performer. He built on his popularity through live appearances at dances and events throughout Southwestern Ontario. In 1946, he became host of CKNX's Serenade Ranch, which ran for seven years. As CKNX began expanding into television, Heywood was tapped to headline the musical showcase Circle 8 Ranch. He also appeared on other series including The Range Riders Show and Western Roundup.

In 1948 Heywood and the Serenade Ranch Gang signed to RCA Victor, and released self-penned hits including the "The Alberta Waltz" and "The Tears of St. Anne." In 1954 RCA Victor declared a National Earl Heywood Week. Heywood also made three albums for Dominion Records, including the popular “Tales of the Donnelly Feud” for which a corresponding song folio was published by Canadian Music Sales in 1971. In all, he wrote and recorded some 300 songs across the span of his career, including sessions for Rodeo and Banff released under the name The Heywood Family featuring wife Martha and children Patricia and Grant. His last recording was the 2006 CD “The Heywood Family: Canada's First Family of Song.” Heywood was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. Heywood also co-founded the Wingham-based Barndance Museum and Entertainment Society, and with Martha continued hosting traditional country dances throughout the 1990s. He passed away on September 17, 2006, at the age of 89.

2021 Inductee Johnny and the Canadians The Johnny Stevens Sextet grew out of several local bands including the Belaires and the Hi-Fi’s. Johnny Stevens the band’s charismatic talented lead singer hailed from Nova Scotia, the sole black member of this R&B styled outfit. According to bass player, Reini Strasser, Stevens was well spoken, polite, handsome and a great singer but, unlike most front men, not egotistical. The band was rounded out by drummer Billy Hilton, lead guitarist Ken Gough, organist Lou Crockett, piano player Joe Dengler and sax player David Atwood. They drew influence from late hour broadcasts on WLAC out of Nashville, where host John R played “real Blues”.

The underage band members also snuck into the Brass Rail to listen to “The Hawk” where Ken Gough would steal funky licks off Robbie Robertson and Bill Hilton learned to twirl drumsticks like Levon. For several years they mostly played area dances and rock shows, including acting as opening band for Dave Clark Five and The Supremes in London. As popularity grew, the group began to play nightly at several local and area clubs, mainly Campbell’s and The 400 Club. At this point they signed with Saul Holiff, who notably managed Johnny Cash. Holiff made arrangements to have the group record their 45 single for Columbia Records in New York City. It was at this time the group renamed themselves Johnny and the Canadians.

The two tracks on the single, “A Million Tears Ago” and “Say Yeah” were written by the Gough and Crockett in the 60’s British Invasion style. Local popularity surged and the group quit their jobs and went on the road, performing at clubs and stage shows throughout Ontario and Quebec, frequently sharing stages with contemporary musicians like Ronnie Hawkins, David Clayton Thomas and Bobby Curtola. They once rejected a month-long tour of Florida when the promoter suggested they needed to replace their singer, who was black.

Johnny and the Canadians were a “ground-breaking” band who helped bring down racial barriers. The late Stevens was one of the few Black front men in Canada in the early days of rock ’n roll. By 1967 the group folded and the various members returned home to disburse to other lives and bands, including locally popular “Plum Loco”.

2021 Inductee Lara St John Lara St. John was born and raised in London. She earned the title of child prodigy when she began playing the violin at the age of two and gave her first public performance as soloist with an orchestra at four. In 1980, at the age of 9, she won grand prize at the Canadian Music Competition. At age 10, St. John made her European debut and spent three years touring the continent.

Accepted at the age of thirteen, St. John entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned her degree. While at Curtis, St. John was sexually assaulted by a teacher. Despite reporting this to the headmaster repeatedly, her complaints were ignored.

It was not until an article was done by a newspaper in 2020 that St. John’s complaints were taken seriously. An independent report finally acknowledged that her complaint was credible, and she was issued an apology almost 35 years later. She hopes the outcome will protect future students.

In 1988, at sixteen, she moved on her own to the former Soviet Union, becoming the youngest post-graduate student at the Moscow Conservatory.

She traveled throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. St. John eventually returned to her studies and attended three different academies: the Guildhall School in London, Mannes College of Music in New York and the New England Conservatory in Boston. .

She has performed at some of the world’s greatest venues and with major symphony orchestras including Cleveland, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, the Boston Pops, the Knights, the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa) and with major orchestras across South America, Europe and Asia.

St John has released thirteen albums. Her first release “Bach Works for Violin Solo” in 1996 was controversial. The cover features an image of her holding her violin across her seemingly unclothed body. Although in her mid twenties, her youthful looks generated talk of child abuse. The album sold over 25,000 copies, a best seller by the standards of the classical music industry. She founded her own record company Ancalagon Records in 1999. St. John's recordings are popular on iTunes.

Her Bach: The Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo was iTunes' best-selling double album of 2007. Her previous recording, Bach: The Concerto Album, rose to number one in the iTunes' classical category in 2005.

Scott and Lara St. John

St. John has won a wide variety of competitions. In 1997, upon winning the Canada Council Stradivarius Prize, St. John was given the use of a 1702 Lyall Stradivarius for two-years. In 1999, an anonymous donor made a permanent loan to St. John of the 1779 "Salabue" Guadagnini violin. Lara and her brother Scott St. John won a Juno in 2011 for Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble or Soloist with Large Ensemble Accompaniment.) In 2021 Lara was invested with the Order of Canada for service to society and innovations which ignite the imagination. She has often stated that her mission is to bring younger listeners to classical music.

Paul Mills is a graduate engineer, musician, musical arranger, graphic designer and recently retired record producer/engineer. He has been part of the Canadian folk music scene and recording industry for over forty years. Raised in London, he graduated from Oakridge Secondary School and The University of Western Ontario. As a teenager Mills dabbled in rock and roll, but eventually the local vibrant folk music scene of the sixties and early seventies caught his attention, shaping his musical tastes and setting the course for his future.

During his university days, it was music that kept him busy at night. He frequented Smales Pace, a local coffeehouse, where he hung out and played with the likes of Stan Rogers, Willie P. Bennett, David Essig, David Bradstreet, Doug MacArthur and Laura Smith. Following in the footsteps of his friend Victor Garber he mastered the finger-style approach to guitar playing and went on to perform in folk music groups such as The Balladeers, The Windy Sprinkle and The Paisley Giraffe Although he got a Masters degree as a chemical engineer, Mills ultimately chose to follow his love of music and joined CBC Radio in 1972.

In 1975 he created a national folk music program called “Touch the Earth” hosted by Sylvia Tyson and this put him in the position to promote and record folk musicians across Canada. After that he became Executive Producer of Radio Drama and later went into management. In the mid-nineties, he left the CBC to open his own production company and recording studio “The Millstream.” Mills has produced close to 200 albums working with artists such as the late Stan Rogers, Sharon, Lois and Bram, Terry Kelly, Ron Hynes and John Allan Cameron. Albums produced or engineered by Paul have earned six gold records, two platinum records, six Juno nominations with two wins, and five East Coast Music Awards. He is also a founding partner of the Borealis Recording Company, an artistfriendly home for Canadian Folk and Roots music.

As an accomplished performer and songwriter, he has been playing both solo and back-up in small clubs, concert halls and folk festivals across Canada.

His primary instrument is guitar, but he also plays mandolin, banjo, bass and ukulele. He has appeared on many of the albums he produced under the name of Curly Boy Stubbs and in 2006, Paul finally released a solo album, “The Other Side of the Glass”. He also performed with Joanne Crabtree in the duo Crabtree & Mills which put out three albums. He and his son Trevor collaborated on an album called “This Boat That I Built With My Father” in 2017.

In addition to his work as a producer and performer, Paul has served on various Boards: he is the Past President of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (now Folk Music Ontario) and has served on the Boards of Folk Music Canada and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Upon moving back to London in 2014, Paul served on the Board of the Home County Music and Art Festival for six years, the last three as Chair. In 2011, Paul was awarded the Estelle Klein Award by Folk Music Ontario, an award which recognizes the work of an individual who has made significant contributions to Ontario’s folk music community. More recently, in May of 2017, Paul was named as a Member of the Order of Canada, a prestigious honour given to those whose life work has made a significant contribution to Canada.

2021 Inductee B.W. Pawley & Plum Loco Plum Loco played the bar circuit across the province for more than three decades with some interruptions and personnel changes along the way. The band featured some of London’s most talented musicians including Brian B. W. Pawley, Ken Kalmusky, John Till and Chuck Grover, all of whom have been considered individually for induction into the Hall of Fame. Having played in a wide range of garage bands throughout the sixties, the musicians morphed into Plum Loco in 1976 featuring Pawley, lead singer and rhythm guitar, John Till (who backed Janis Joplin in the Full Tilt Boogie Band) on guitar, Ken Kalmusky (who played in Ian and Sylvia Tyson’s Great Speckled Bird) on bass, Billy Hilton (who played with Johnny and the Canadians) on drums, along with Dave Warner on piano. Their music was what Pawley described as “cow rock” or “crock, Texas-style stuff, sort of rock and country.”

They pounded away on the club circuit year after year, which is how you made it back then. They played most of the venues in South Western Ontario including Fryfogles, The Firehall and Kelly’s Boogie Parlour in London where they always drew a crowd. Plum Loco never got around to recording an album: “We were too busy having a good time,” said Pawley of the band that became one of the most popular in the province.

Pawley left the band in 1980 to play with Ronnie Hawkins and in 1983, Pawley got a record deal releasing “Too Many Parties” and “Livin Lovin’ and Drinkin’ and toured extensively until 1990. He then returned to the region and reformed Plum Loco. When Ken Kalmusky died in 2005, John's son Shawn became Plum Loco's bass player.

Billy Hilton passed away in 2009 and Plum Loco retired his position. A new permanent drummer to replace him was never hired.

“We had some fun, I’ll tell you,” said Pawley, who moved to Prince Edward Island a few years ago.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Greg Simpson

Greg Simpson worked in the music industry for more than five decades and had an encyclopedic knowledge of music. He was a stalwart supporter of Forest City acts as a manager, mentor, and Program Director at FM96 in the 1980s. Greg was also a long-time volunteer with the Forest City London Music Awards, under all of its names.

Simpson began his radio career at London’s CJOE in 1969. He then spent time in the label world, at A&M Records and at music retailers including Record World, and Sam The Record Man before returning to radio in 1979 as Music Director for FM96. Greg was honoured with Music Director of the Year award twice at the Record Conference. During this time Greg also taught the next generation of radio programmers at Fanshawe College. As a speaker and panelist at various music conventions as well as at many educational institutions, Greg was always keen to pass along his wealth of knowledge and information about the music and radio industry. Greg became an integral part of Canadian Music Week (CMW) and was their longest running Master of Ceremonies. Simpson also served as a conference facilitator for more than 25 years.

In 1993 he started his own music consulting and radio promotion firm, Mindbenders Music. He worked with everyone from Thundermug, Kim Mitchell and Lee Aaron to Carole Pope and Lighthouse, all from his London office. After 15 years, and massive changes to the radio landscape, Greg closed the company and focused on his work with CMW. Greg eventually moved to British Columbia, his province of birth to be near family but returned to London most years to act as master of ceremonies at the FCLMA activities. He made the return permanent a couple of years ago and immediately volunteered at the London Music Hall of Fame where he enthusiastically shared stories of London’s musical history.

He had a reputation as a talker and the topic was most often music. He was blunt and always had something to add to any discussion. Shelly Rastin, one of the many Londoner’s Greg helped with their careers summed up Greg thus: “He’s smart as hell. Funny and witty as hell. Adventurous.” Greg’s return to London was too short as he passed away from a series of strokes in June of 2020. He will be missed by us at the FCLMA and by so many others in the music industry.

JUNE 9 Singer songwriter FRANK RIDSDALE rose to fame with London's own Uranus. The band was inducted into the Forest City London Music Hall of Fame in 2017. Frank has penned some of the most memorable tunes and you can catch him live from time-to-time playing around town.

JUNE 10 ALUN PIGGINS from London Ontario is the singer/ guitarist/songwriter for the widely successful Morganfields. The band recorded 3 albums for Universal music and toured across Canada and the States. Alun has worked in the studio and shared the stage with such acts as The Rheostatics, Blue Rodeo, Sloan as well as comedy legends Kids in the Hall. He has released 3 solo records and toured all around the world.

JUNE 11 PAUL JAGO was the lead singer and primary songwriter of the award-winning London-based alternative rock band, The Gandharvas (previously known as The Droogs). He continues to be a prolific artist and songwriter while working as an exploration geologist in northern BC and the southwestern USA. His most recent project is WOLF PAW, a hard rock outfit fronted

She recently launched the Women in Media podcast looking to explore the collective challenges women face in the media spotlight, in a maledominated industry.

As CEO she heads a Toronto-based indie label that provides artist management, production and sales of music, festival production, concert promotion and song publishing. Six Shooter Records is recognized for its artist-centric business model, committed to boundary-pushing artistic development with career artists. De Cartier was the 2015-2016 chair of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), was vicechair of the Radio Starmaker Fund (2012); and was on the board of the Americana Music Association in Nashville in 2013. In 2019 she was recipient of the CIMA Entrepreneur Award.

WOMEN IN MUSIC: PANELISTS CHARLIE WALL-ANDREWS is a Trudeau Scholar and PhD candidate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Ted Rogers School of Management. She is dedicated to using her research to support innovation and entrepreneurship in the Canadian music ecosystem.

She conducts research at the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University. Charlie has worked in the creative industries for over a decade.

One of the most promising artists in Canada’s upand-coming music scene, JUSTINE CHANTALE has been described as the small-town girl with the big voice, and even bigger heart. After all, for this Stratford chanteuse, music has been a driving force for as long as she can remember, from singing in the school choir, learning guitar and playing at her high school’s Coffee Houses to playing local open mics.

Now, showcasing a blend of country and pop, Justine has continued to make a name for herself across the region, not only hitting the stage during Country Music Week at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Association Awards in London, Ont., but opening for landmark artists including Jess Moskaluke, Chad Brownlee and Bobby Wills. All of her music, including two EPs and several singles can be found on all streaming platforms

WOMEN IN MUSIC: PANELISTS DENISE PELLEY performed with many great artists including acclaimed trombonist Ray Anderson, Gospel/Blues legend Jackie Richardson and Flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook and opened for Aretha Franklin. Denise has performed with symphony orchestras and festivals, including the du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival (Toronto), Ottawa Jazz Festival, The Royal Canadian Big Band Festival, Bluesfest, Waterloo Jazz Festival and Sunfest.

Her theatre work includes, The Grand Theatre (London) performing in the Fats Waller musical Ain’t Misbehavin’, Wang Dang Doodle with Denis Simpson and A Streetcar Named Desire. Denise’s one-woman show, Jazzabel premiered in September 2004 at the McManus Theatre (Grand Theatre), London, Ontario to sold out audiences! In October 2005 Jazzabel was performed in Washington, DC at the National Museum for Women in the Arts and in February 2006 to audiences in New York City at Urban Stages Theatre. As well, she was premiered in the February 2006 issue of O (Oprah Winfrey) Magazine. Denise’s recording credits include seven CD’s.

She is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, 2003 YM-YWCA Woman of Distinction in the Arts and Heritage category and in 2009 the London Black History Committee honoured Denise with the Black Community Achievement Award. In April 2015 Denise was inducted into the London Music Hall of Fame. Denise volunteers with Canadian Aid for Southern Sudan where she delivers music and art camp for the children and raises funds for a school in Nigeria.

ERIC RATZ is a Grammy and JUNO Award winning Producer, Engineer and Mixer with over 20 years experience. Eric is known for big sounding mixes and rock productions. He has worked with Canada’s most successful and influential rock bands including Arkells, Big Wreck, Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, Danko Jones and Monster Truck. He has been nominated for 11 JUNO awards in both the Producer and Recording Engineer categories. He has won Producer of the Year and twice won Engineer of the Year at the JUNOs. He has been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards, winning once for Engineer of the Year.

A proud Londoner, INDIA CORAN has worked in the music industry as a radio promotion rep for over 10 years after attending UWO, Harris Institute for the Arts, and U of T. She represents both international and domestic artists to radio across Canada who are either independent or signed to major labels.

Some well known clients have included Awolnation, Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, Nickelback, Our Lady Peace, and The Trews. She has introduced new artists to radio who went on to secure major label deals such as The Lazys, The Motorleague, and Juno award winning pop sensation Neon Dreams. POP GOES EVERYTHING: PANELISTS MATT GRADY is a Canadian Producer and Engineer. Matt has strong ties to London Ontario both through working as Chief Engineer at legendary EMAC Recording Studios for more than a decade, and in his role as Professor of Music Industry Arts at Fanshawe College. A rabid fan and disciple of rock and roll, he has had the good fortune to have been taught and worked alongside legends like Jack Richardson who taught him the skills to harbour a new generation of Canadian talent. Matt continues to grow as a creative force; whether producing, engineering (Ivory Hours, The Pairs. The Jailbirds) or creating (Tandem Eagle, Manglor) his sound continues the old school traditions with new explosive energy.

LUKE ROES is a songwriter, musician & producer. “I used to release music as 'Ivory Hours' but lately I'm on a mission for authenticity, and that's meant ditching the pseudonym.”

In 2016-17, he was Executive Director of the Nia Centre for the Arts, a youth arts organization focused on helping young Black artists. During his tenure, he secured an additional 7,000 square feet from the City of Toronto for their venue to be renovated into Canada’s first multidisciplinary professional space dedicated to Black art. Dwayne also produced Nia’s first large-scale multidisciplinary arts festival, Blowout Fest. From 2013 to 2015, Dwayne was the Executive Director of Manifesto Community Projects, where among his achievements he produced Canada’s largest hiphop and urban arts festival at Yonge & Dundas Square in Toronto.

Ward is a Program Consultant with the Ontario Music Office at Ontario Creates. KELLY SAMUEL is the founder of Let's Snack Toronto, and a proud member of the Forbes Agency Council. Prior to founding Let's Snack Toronto, Kelly founded and managed a different Social Media Agency in Toronto. PRODUCER, PRODUCER – RECORDING IN THE NEW AGE

SOLOMON MARLEY SPENCE AKA KING CRUFF is an emerging hip-hop artist based out of London Ontario. Raised in Kingston, Jamaica, this rapper has been bringing his fresh, hip-hop anthems to the global stage for the past year or so. He’s known for producing rich storydriven bars with fiercely intelligent lyricism. To date, he’s released a number of well-received tracks and is currently sitting on two collaborative EP’s. The rapper has toured much of the US and Canada, bringing his electrifying performances far and wide. He hopes to inspire, empower and bring comfort to others through his music as he pours all his pain and passion into every track.

In 2017, SUZI KORY began writing and recording her first EP, Spellcasting, produced by John Angus MacDonald (The Trews.) The EP took her as far as Brazil where she would be the only Canadian artist, and one of three international acts, performing at Festival CoMA. There she caught the attention of Indie Week founder and fellow Canadian Darryl Hurs, who has since invited her numerous times to showcase during Indie Week in Toronto.

Suzi found herself writing and recording in Los Angeles with producer Brent Woods (Vince Neil, Sebastian Bach, Taylor Hawkins). She has since released five singles, ‘The Secret Garden’ (2018), ‘Pretty Little Things’ (2019), and ’Settle of the Dust’, ‘Outlaw’, and her latest ‘Love Revolution’ (2020).

The singles have collectively garnered over 150,000 streams online and over 45,000 views on YouTube and have been played worldwide on radio and Sirius XM. In the summer of 2020, Kory organized the first-ever drive-in country music festival, the ‘Love Revolution’ festival, which took place in Ontario, California, and featured 7 local country artists. She then took the festival to Columbia, Tennessee in the fall and plans to spread the festival to every continent worldwide.

Career highlights include co-producing with Juno & Polaris prize winner Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Buffy Sainte- Marie, Bare Naked Ladies) and Grammy & Juno winner Adam Messinger (Magic!, Iggy Azalea) and vocal production for WOMEX 2016 artist Calypso Rose, Polaris Prize winner Lido Pimienta and Canadian icon Lillian Allen. ALYSHA BRILLA has been composing and producing music for 17 years. Three Juno Award Nominations, 7,000,000 streams, six records, various projects with artists and youth internationally with features of music on shows such as Degrassi: The Next Generation.

As a sound designer and creative wellness facilitator Brilla has a special interest in bioacoustics and sound as a healing modality; and is driven by a deep belief in music's power to transform ourselves and our world.

Brilla's music, blogs and spirituality are inspired by growing up with parents from two different cultural and religious backgrounds; a Muslim Indo-Tanzanian father who immigrated to Canada and a Christian European Settler-Canadian mother.

Raised in Brampton, Ontario, Brilla's rocky youth and intersecting cultural influences encouraged the birds eye view, non-linear philosophies that inform her artistry and teachings.

In high school, Brilla completed an internship at a local recording studio and began self-producing her music released on her Independent label, Sunny Jam Records. She has since performed internationally including across Australia, Singapore, Tanzania and Chile.

Brilla has performed for and conducted creative wellness workshops in schools for the past ten years; promoting storytelling through music and mentoring in self-expression through the arts with a focus on developing skills in songwriting and music production. A special focus on encouraging and promoting the voices of youth and young women across the world for their critical perspectives on environment and social awareness and action.

In Sept 2020, Brilla opened The Frequency Portal to provide an online learning and healing space with classes, workshops, mentorship and dynamic discussions about the science of creativity, self-expression, the physics of sound and their relationship to our wellness and humanity.

Born in Calgary and based in rural BC, Canada, KINNIE STARR is a self-taught tri-lingual musician, producer, songwriter, poet, illustrator, mentor and speaker of Dutch/Mohawk, Irish and French descent. Her diverse career began 25 years ago when her debut album prompted a bidding war between major labels, resulting in a signing with Mercury/island/DefJam. Through nine trailblazing albums since she continues to create raw, intuitive material that straddles the lines between folk, rap, art-pop and poetry, challenging listeners while making them bounce and nod.

Starr won a Juno Award as producer for Digging Roots’ Aboriginal Album of the Year, “We Are” (2010) which featured collaborations with Tanya Tagaq and A Tribe Called Red. She produces her own music, making her one of the 5% of female producers worldwide - a growing populus she spearheads by example. She researched, cowrote, executive-produced and hosted the 2016 feature length award-winning documentary, Play Your Gender, which investigates the complex conversation around the gender gap in music production. It received the Edith Lando award in 2017, and was one of the top 10 docs to watch at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, 2017.

The US premiere of the film took place in NYC in Feb. 2018, and the film went to South Africa, Oakland, Toronto, New Zealand and Siberia.

January 2021 Starr released a new pop single 'Win or Lose' on Boomsmack Records, her first release since her 2018 album, Feed the Fire, though she released a soundtrack last year for Edge of the Knife the first Haida language feature film, which won Best Canadian Film and Best British Columbia Film at VIFF 2018 and was one of TIFF’s top ten films that same year.

Notable music achievements include: recognized as a pioneer in Canadian hip hop by Manifesto Hip Hop Summit in Toronto alongside Michie Mee (2011); The Julian Taylor Band co-write 'Just a Little Bit' used by the Toronto Blue Jays in their anti-bullying campaign (2015); acknowledged as a cultural icon by the Royal British Museum of Victoria, BC (2008) and nomination for Best New Artist Juno award (2004).

Starr has worked in arts activism and mentorship with a focus on empowering indigenous and LGBTQ kids since 2006 including “Auntie Kinnie’s Rap Skool”; a literacyfocused hip hop program aimed at helping kids find their voice and power.

After 25 years of her publishing having been owned by Last Gang/Olé/E-One/Anthem, Starr is finally a free agent.

PRODUCER’S SECRET SAUCE - PANELISTS Lantz aka MICHAEL LANTZ is a Canadian record producer & songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. Using melodic synths, hard-hitting drums and bending baselines, his production style is self-described as “cinematic trap music".

Recent notable successes include co-writing and producing Warner artist Charmaine's recent singles Woo! and Bold. He's currently working with Warner artists CJ Flemings as well as rising Pop / EDM stars Willa and Ralph - who earned a Juno 2020 nomination in Dance category. Pre-pandemic Lantz was being flown to Japan to write & produce for k-pop artists in development.

Though Lantz had produced records from a young age, his professional career started at age 18 when in 2011, he met rapper Jazz Cartier at a Scarborough studio. The two hit it off and became collaborators, with Lantz producing Cartier's first single and video "Set Fire". This was followed by producing Cartier's 2015 debut album Marauding in Paradise which received a 7.3 from Pitchfork and nomination for Polaris Music Prize. Lantz won 2017 Juno for Rap Recording of the Year as producer for Cartier's 2nd album Hotel Paranoia. He is known to add the tag "Lantz, is that you?" using a sample of Jazz Cartier's voice at the end or beginning of his records.

ANTHONY WRIGHT has been surrounded by music his entire life. His father a minister and his mother a gospel singer, Anthony got his start in the church. At the age of 16 Anthony went to work in the cruise ship industry. His arranging and composition skills, along with his proficiency in saxophone, flute, clarinet, piano and voice led him to become Carnival Cruise Lines youngest Musical Director. To this date, Anthony is responsible for just about 1⁄2 of CCL’s written shows.

Anthony left cruise ships with new trade under his belt… the 1s & 2s. He is an internationally renowned DJ, playing major clubs throughout North America. As a DJ, he is the resident for Mariposa Cruises, SITC and Cadillac Fairview. He has played parties for the likes of Geddy Lee, Bill Clinton, Shakira, Eugene Levy, Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Elton John. Although he is a capable singer in his own right, he makes his living backing up many amazing artists including: Beyonce, Glenn Lewis, Melanie Durrant, Kid Rock, and the legendary Brooke Blackburn. Currently, Anthony is playing for Matthew Good on his Lights Of Endangered Species tour.

Anthony is also a talented producer, working with BoB, John Legend, Kim Davis, Eva Avila, Toya Alexis, and most recently Mike Ferfolia on his debut release entitled “Pop Star Reject.”
