Background
Brief 15 — Yearbook
Originally, as a group, we pitched for the BA (Hons) Graphic Design Yearbook at Leeds College of Art. The pitch was unsucessful, so we chose to work on the BA (Hons) Photography Yearbook. With weekly discussion with three photography students and their course leader, we’ve been working on layout ideas. The deadline for the Yearbook is passed the OUGD603 submission deadline, so designs are yet to be finalised.

Concept
Brief 15 — Yearbook
‘Signing Out’ considers an aspect every student at Leeds College of Art does daily; signing in. This ritual is obviously a way of showing attendance, but a signature has many connotations: - As a university of creatives, we can all be considered as artists. An artist always signs his masterpiece, our masterpiece being the degree. - With previous Yearbooks lacking personality, a signature is a unique way of injecting something more personal.

Yearbook Itself

The front cover features the sign in sheet that we’ve viewed the last 3 years, with the signatures of those in the class. Every student is given a double page spread. They are allowed to correct their spread, making each page unique. The example above shows that my name has been changed from Joseph to Joe, and an arrow pointing at my chosen method of communication. Although this could make the spreads look scruffy, you would be in charge of your own spread, therefore you would not want to deface it.

A large sign in sheet would be displayed on the wall, with information edited to show which studio each student’s final work could be found. The chalk board allows visitors to input some feedback on the exhibition.

Unfortunately, we did not win with our proposal, the feedback iwe received is as follows: - Due to issues with students forgetting to sign in, a concept based around the sign in may not be approproate. - Allowing students to annotate their own pages could distract from the imagery too much. - The chalk board may end up being defaced.

After a few meetings with Photography, it became apparent that they liked the idea of a colleciton of loose sheets. The previous Yearbook was a selection of postcards, something they want to avoid. We researched into ways sheets could held together.

Previous Yearbooks have always been A4, or a square format of a similar size. They were keen to have a Yearbook made that was larger than previious years too.

I Like It What Is It?

Anthony Burrils book “I Like It, What Is It’? is at B4 size, and features 30 posters that are perfect bound, and can be pulled out and framed. When presenting this to Photogaphy, the students loved the idea. It is a perfect way of creating a neat collection of loose images.

Another interesting feature to be added to the Photography Yearbook, a small A5 booklet will be glued to the inside cover, featuring a preface and contents information.

As Photography are yet to come back to us with a name to consider, this page has been difficult to design. Above you can see an example of how the inside cover could look.
Double Spreads
With each student’s work being a different format, and with image composition being key, images will always appear differently. Using a grid system to maintain some consistency, images will appear quite loose, whilst bodycopy is kept structural and consistant.

Alternatiing between spreads with text are pages with images. This means each student will have a double sided page, one side with information to do with them on, the other to be used as a framed photo. You can see above examples that have been ripped out.
