LegacyFanfareisdedicatedtoDr.GaryCiepluchincelebrationofthe25thanniversaryof theClevelandYouthWindSymphony,withsincerestgratitude.Dr.Ciepluch’sceaseless energyandexceptionalmusicianshipincombinationwithhiswelcomingdemeanorand contentofcharacterhasmadetheClevelandYouthWindSymphonyaspecialplacewhere studentmusiciansandteacherscancollaboratefromallovernortheasternOhioinmusicmakingandfriendship.Hisstewardshipofthisprogramoverthepasttwenty-fiveyearshas inspiredthousandsofstudents,teachers,andfutureteachers--includingthecomposer, whoisaproudalumnusoftheorganization.

Theinspirationforthisbeautifulcommissionedworkisbestexplainedinthewordsofthe composer: "Sincethebeginningoftime,manhasponderedwhathappenswhenour physicalbodydies.SomebelievewegotoHeaven.Othersdoubtitsexistence entirely...Forme,Ihavealwayshopedthatwhenwepassitwillbeavery peacefulexperience."

Aslow,soft,anddelicateopeningsectionthatbeginswithupperwoodwindsrepresents peacefulnessreturningtothesoul.Theapproachtoanewconsciousnessisconveyedasthe piecebuildstoaslightlyfasterGrandiososectionwithgloriousfanfarepassagesinthe trumpetsandhornsanddramaticflourishesinthewoodwinds.Theremainderofthework representsanotionofbecomingfamiliarwiththenewsurroundings.Asolemnclosing sectionbringsthecompositiontoasoft,peacefulconclusion.

ThispiecewascommissionedbyMikeMcGheeinhonorofhiswife(andaformerbossof mine)Lt.Col.BethSteeleforthesixthannualMusicattheSummitAdultBandInstitute, a“bandcamp ”thatattractsamateurmusiciansfromacrossthecountry.Mostofthese musiciansplayintheirlocalcommunitybandsandmaketheirlivingdoingnon-musical pursuits Foraweek,theyrehearse,conductsectionalsandmasterclasseswithworld-class clinicians,andfinallyputonapublicconcertatabeautifulvenue.Butduringthattime theyalsoeatgreatfood,enjoythesceneryandactivitiesofBreckenridge,andhaveablast makingnewfriendsthroughthecommonbondofmusic.IwasthrilledMikeaskedmeto writeanopenerwiththisensembleinmind.

Thispiecewaspremieredundertheworkingtitle,“MusicfortheSummit.”Whilethistitle wasperfectlyappropriateandaptlydescribedwherethepiecewasfirstperformed,itdidn’t describewhythepiecewaswritten.Ithink“FortheFunofIt”bettercapturesthesenseof joythemusiciansfeltplayingsomethingnewandwrittenespeciallyforthem.It’smyhope thatadultswhoplaythispiecewillenjoyitasmuchasthefirstgroupwhoplayeditdid, andthatyoungpeoplewhoplayitwillconsiderthatmusicmakingcanbealifelong activity.Moststudentswhomakemusicinschooldon’tgoontobeprofessionals,but theirdaysofplayingneednotendwhentheygraduate Infact,forthethousandswho continuetoplayinthenation’scommunitybands,it’sanimportantcomponentinliving theirbestandmostfulfillinglives.

Mountainsrisingtothesun, Tow’ringo ’ ertheplains. Headsheldhighwestandasone, Andproudlyweproclaim:

WeareColumbine!

WeallareColumbine!

Lettheworldbetold, Blueandsilverweuphold forever.

OnApril20,1999,theworldwasrockedwhentwostudentswalkedintoColumbineHigh Schoolandkilled12classmatesandoneteacher.21peoplewereinjuredbygunshots,three morewereinjuredinanattempttoescape.Itremainsanationaltragedy.Itiseasytoforget that at the time there was no precedent for an event like this, especially given how frequentlyimitatorshavebroughtthesamedestructiontootherschoolsinthe25years sinceColumbine.Teachersarenowtrainedinhowtoprotecttheirstudentsintheeventof anactiveshooter.TeacherssuchasVickiSotoareveneratedforsacrificingthemselvesto protecttheirstudentsfromharm.

Thedayaftertheshooting,studentsattheUniversityofColoradoatBoulderimmediately started raising funds to commission Ticheli to write a work commemorating the event. TicheliwaschosenbecausetheColumbineHighSchoolWindEnsemblewaspreparing andadoredhisarrangementofShenandoah.OnApril23,2000,ayearaftertheevent,the ColumbineWindEnsemblepremieredthepieceunderthedirectionofthecomposer

InaninterviewwithColoradoPublicRadioin2019,Tichelirecountsspeakingwitha conductorbeforethepiecewasplayedinCarnegieHall:

“Hesaidtome,‘I’mperformingyour‘Elegy’atCarnegieHallinmemoryofthevictimsof thelatestschoolshooting’AndIsaid“Whichone?’Hesaid,“Theonethatwillhappen betweennowandtheCarnegieHallconcert.”

Twodayslater,17studentsandstaffmemberswerekilledatStonemanDouglasHigh SchoolinParkland,Florida.

InFrankTicheli’sprogramnotesforthepiece,hewritesthatitis“aboveall,anexpression ofhope.”Ticheliwritesthattherearethreemoodsthroughoutthepiece:hope,serenity, andsadness.TheclimaxofthepieceisastatementoftheColumbineAlmaMater,whose textisprovidedabove.Followingisasoloplayedbyanoffstagetrumpet.Tichelisaysthat itrepresentsa“celestialvoice itcouldbereligious,itcouldbethespiritofsomeonewho wasavictimoftheshootingtragedy,itcouldbeanyone.Butmypointisthatit’savoice that’snothere.”Hewrites,“Ihopetheworkcanalsoserveasonereminderofhowfragile andpreciouslifeisandhowintimatelyconnectedweallareashumanbeings.”

Thisperformance,occurringtheweekofthe25thanniversary,isdedicatedtothe survivors.Mayyoufindpeace,andtogether,maywefindthestrengthandcourageto preventthesetragediesfromeverhappeningagain.

Incandescence(2022)

LewisHowardLatimer(1848-1928),anAfricanAmericaninventoranddraftsman,played acriticalroleinshapingseveralkeytechnologicaladvancementsstillinusetothisday. Amongallofhiscreations,LAtimerisbestknownforhisbrilliantworkonthelightbulb. ThomasEdisondidinventthelightybulb,butwithoutLatimer’scontributions, a lightbulbwouldlastnomorethanacoupleofhours.LewisLatimer’sinvention,the carbonfilamentlightbulb,allowedabulbtoburnforsubstantiallylongerperiodsoftime. Inadditiontobeingaseasonedinventoranddraftsman,Latimerwasanavidpainter,poet, andmusician

Thisworkisamusicaldepictionoflight,referringtoboththelightresultingfrom Latimer’sinventionsaswellasthebrilliantscientificandartisticscholarhewas.Attimes, theworkradiateswithjoyandisatothertimesquietanddeepincreativethought,eagerto seehowanideadazzlingwithpotentialmightunfoldlateron.Evokingasenseofwonder, excitement,andmystery,IncandescencetributesLewisLatimer’ssignificantcontributions tothelightbulbandhiseverlastingingenuity.

Overthefirstsixyearsofhislife,ImusthavereadGoodnightMoontomysonathousand times,maybemore.Somewherearoundreadingnumber500Ibeganhearinglittlemusical fragmentsasIread,andovertimethosefragmentsbegantoblossomintoasimple,sweet lullaby.Iknewitwasalongshot,butIaskedmymanager,ClaireLong,tocontact HarperCollinsandseeiftheywouldallowthetexttobesettomusic.Tomysurpriseand delighttheyagreed–thefirsttimetheyhadeverallowedGoodnightMoontobeusedin suchaway.Icomposedthepiecerelativelyquickly,settingthetextforharp,string orchestra,andmyson ’ smother,sopranoHilaPlitmann.

ThisWindEnsemblearrangementofGoodnightMoonwascreatedbyDr.Verena Mösenbichler-BryantandpremieredwiththeWorldAdultWindOrchestraProject (WAWOP)andtheWorldYouthWindOrchestraProject(WYWOP).Dr.MösenbichlerBryantconductedthepremiereinJuly2017withsopranoHilaPlitmannandEric Whitacreinattendance.

Thisworkisthesecondsetoffolksongscomposedasatributetothepeopleoftheold Cajunculture.CajunsaredescendantsoftheAcadians,agroupofearlyFrenchcolonists whosettledinNovaScotiaandweredrivensouthtoLouisianabytheBritishinthemid1750s.

Louisiana-bornFrankTichelibasedtheseworksonfolkmelodieswhosepreciseoriginsare unknown,freelycombiningthemwithoriginalmusic.Inthefirstmovement,heopens withapersonalreflectivebrasschorale,followedbytwodifferentsettingsofaCajunfolk song.ThismelancholyBallad,withitsstarklybeautifultexturesandharmonies,isfollowed byabrashandlivelyCountryDance.Thismusicevokestheenergeticfeelingandstyleofa Cajuntwo-step,aformcommonlyusedinthedancehallsofsouthernLouisianathathas stylisticsimilaritiestoScottishfolkdancesandtheAmericanhoedown.

Themusicstartsinapowerfulstatementfromthebrassthatsetsthetoneforthewildride tofollow.Thefour-noteideablossomsintoafullmelodyalittlelateroninthepiece. Throughoutthepiece,itfeaturesthepairingoftripletandeighth-noterhythms.Alongthe way,somedissonantharmoniesareutilizedtocreateaheightenedfeelingoftensionand release.Thefour-notemotivereturnsonefinaltimeatthefermatatobringthepiecetoa rousingfinish.

BurstisaspiritedpieceforwindbandthatwascommissionedbytheAllegroYouthWind EnsembleandtheG.RayBodleyHighSchoolBandsinSyracuse,NewYork,underthe directionofTerranceCavinessandJohnCoggiola.

StephenPetersonhasenjoyedaforty-three-year careerteachingandconductingthroughoutthe UnitedStatesandaroundtheworld.Most recently,heservedasdirectorofbandsatthe UniversityofIllinois,whereheservedfrom2015 untilhisretirementin2022.AtIllinois,he conductedtheIllinoisWindSymphony,ledthe graduatewindconductingprogram,taught coursesinwindliterature,andguidedallaspectsof oneofthenation’soldest,largest,andmoststoried bandprograms.

PriortojoiningthefacultyattheUniversityof Illinois,heservedasdirectorofbandsatIthaca CollegeinIthaca,NewYorkforseventeenyears.From1988–1998,he servedasassociatedirectorofbandsatNorthwesternUniversity in Evanston,Illinois.Dr.Petersonwasalsoconductoroftherenowned NorthshoreConcertBand.Heheldpositionsasassociateandinterim directorofbandsatStephenF.AustinStateUniversityinNacogdoches, Texasandhasseveralyearsofsuccessfulteachingexperienceinthepublic schoolsinArizona.

Petersonmaintainsabusyscheduleasaconductorandclinician,and,assuch, hasappearedonfourcontinentsandinforty-fivestates.Inadditiontomany honor bands and clinics this year, he has residencies at the University of Michigan,TheUniversityofColorado,TheUniversityofMassachusetts,and Appalachian State University. He is a past-president of the College Band Directors National Association and has been honored with membership in theprestigiousAmericanBandmastersAssociation,wherehehasservedon theBoardofDirectors.HeisalsoamemberofPhiMuAlpha,PhiKappaPhi, PiKappaLambda,andanhonorarymemberofTauBetaSigmaandKappa KappaPsi. The first to receive the doctor of music degree in wind conducting from Northwestern University, Peterson earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees fromArizonaStateUniversity.In2012,hewasawardedtheprestigiousIthaca College Faculty Excellence Award, recognizing his contributions to Ithaca College. His ensembles have appeared before national conventions of the AmericanBandmastersAssociation(threetimes),theCollegeBandDirectors NationalAssociation(twice),theNationalAssociationofCollegeWindand PercussionInstructors,theAmericanSchoolBandDirectorsAssociation,and atChicago’sOrchestraHallandLincolnCenterinNewYorkCity.
