1.1

Temporary shelter Thematic week The challenge this week was the development and construction of temporary shelters made of cardboard. This constraint should be weather resistant. Shape development Inspired by origami, this folding form is simple to implement and is stabilized by a triangulation system. This folding is an easy and efficient answer that develops a plan allows intuitive implementation.

1.2

Pedestrian bridge Multidisciplinary The multidisciplinary course combines the architect, the engineer and the foreman for an exchange of knowledge to a common project. Crossing This bridge connects two paths away from this natural obstacle for a better development. This scheme provides an overview of what was the founding element of the city of Fribourg. With the crossing of the river, the bridge provides a link with the right bank of the Sarine, now difficult to access. Technique The structural problems are solved by the geometry of the bridge generating slopes boosting the footpath. The realization of the work would be managed by a single crane allowing for the effective implementation.

1.3

Collective housing Urban form This housing unit redefines the public space by extending the south station square, creating a spatial dialogue. This new area has a view of the station from outside on the urban block. By its "Z" shape, the building articulates a more private area in the back for occupants. Typology This accommodation block meets social diversity of the district by typological variety. This diversity offers apartments ranging from two to six rooms composed of singles and duplexes to maximize the perception of the interior space. The complexity of these apartments is associated with the theme of the loggias to offer a new vision of their home in a collective housing unit. Construction Regular static system and heat systems of the building have promoted the use of wood in construction.

1.4

Market & Church Prelude A combination of two competing programs. This relationship is a reinterpretation as the two volumes are placed next to each other in a horizontal manner, while the spiritual side of the other creates contrast through its verticality. Flexibility Requiring only a roof for its opening days, three times per week, the market will also be a space devoted for the neighborhoods and various cultural events. Course Through a nonspecific religion, this tower is intended as a setting for cohabiting various prayers and meditations spaces for an intense spiritual journey suspended between this structure.

Tsukiji Market Prelude During my stay in Japan, I collected various research and anecdotes in my travel journal. Articles which were mainly in connection with the architecture. During a morning visit to the fish market for tasting sashimi, I could not resist to pursue the question of this singular market which took me through feelings. An article that clearly made me want to develop a new issue for this market which will close at the end of 2016.

Tsukiji 1935 - 2016

Toyosu 2016 -

1923 and the opening of the market After the great earthquake in 1923, Tokyo Metropolitan Government launched a city reconstruction plan by redefining the major routes and new laws to prevent another catastrophe. Before the disaster, the government was already thinking about the relocation of the fish market because of the recent installation of the banks on the other side of the bridge. Having no place to Nihonbashi, the market should move. The plot of Tsukiji was from the beginning chosen for this project. The building has been developed in a quarter arc thus allowed to be more functional. It was connected to the railway line from Shinbashi station. In this hall without walls, the market became the building with the largest steel structure to show the value and quality of the new Japanese structure in the prewar period.

Tsukiji Market Toyosu, the industry The relocation originally planned for 2014, was delayed because of the pollution of the site owned by Tokyo Gas. It will cover a plot of 40 ha, 80% more than Tsukiji in terms of area to include a largest refrigerated areas. This new project is budgeted at more than 200 billion yen (1.6 billion dollars). In this vast project, areas dedicated to visitors and especially the optimization of transport between the various spaces are provided to facilitate the management and circulation. The fishing industry will no longer be managed in the same way. A loss of its identity is obvious and even if they put a lot of effort, this place doesn’t have the same strength or the same character.

Toyosu

Problematic The current market is considered obsolete for over 25 years. It will be relocated on the industrial island of Toyosu in late 2016. This will enable developers to invest heavily in the Tsukiji site to enlarge the business district. Although this relocation allows complete reorganization of the market, it will lose much of its attraction because of its distance from the center and the loss of own character instead. If the fish market stayed in Tsukiji? Is currently scattered across the existing parcel, the market lacks coherence and strength in an ever increasing and high megalopolis. To restore its reputation, the whole infrastructure should be a single entity, the hall of current wholesalers to keep consistency with the existing. A project that would be a strong act in the Tokyo megalopolis thus closing a corner of a city by its size and architectural form.

Thematic week

Intervening on the opposite part of the Chillon Castle, the reinterpretation of the place aims to questioning the castle’s transition. A new path

For better clarity of access they have been reinterpreted and simplified. The old road leading to the castle was reclassified to put this work in this old context. Our building is grafted on this path for a better approach for the visitors. The landscape surrounding has been simplified to make our work as clear as possible. Both simple and dynamic, it reinterprets the geometry of this peak by simplifying and opening this feudal setting. Its proximity, complicity between these two works is reinforced forming a narrowing to fully open on the home site.
