After a bit of cursory research, I came upon the four great cycles of Irish mythology - the Mythological, Ulster, Fenian, and Historical. The Fenian seemed the most appropriate on which to base a song cycle, and so that was what I decided to do.

Life got in the way, as it has a tendency to do, and so I did not get to write the work until the summer of 2017. Each song presents a different tale from the Fenian Cycle, some narrated as an historical epic while others are presented dramatically in first person.

PERFORMANCE NOTES: These parts were written with the Ellars children specifically in mind, as seen by the unique combination of talents required of each part. Future performances may employ multiple musicians per part as necessary. Additionally, while the songs were conceived of and designed to be a cycle, they may also be sung singly or in excerpted sets.

He recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, where he received a triple major in music education, clarinet performance, and mathematics. While there, he studied clarinet with Kenneth Grant and conducting with Oliver Hagen and Eric Laprade. He has played with a number of chamber groups, including the reed quintet CirQ, the wind quintet Azzimato Winds, and the clarinet quartet Three Stands Apiece. Following his Master's degree, he intends to become a high school band director.

I. Prologue – The Fianna Éirann 1. I sing to you now of a time long ago, When there would soon be all too much to despair in, When Conn Céchathach was high king o’er the land, When Conn Céchathach formed the Fianna Éirann.

II. The Salmon of Knowledge 1. Oh, my name is Finn, or at least now.

My mom named me Denma with her own tongue; She left me here when I was young.

I don’t know why or where or how.

Of the best of the warriors the Fianna was formed; The captain was taken from one of the clans.

‘Twas Cumhaill of Basicne, not old Goll Mac Morna, Who was chosen to captain those chosen Fian.

But Cumhaill found a woman, the daughter of Tadg, A sorcerer cruel, and asked for her hand.

Bodhmall taught me to hunt and run.

Liath taught me manners and chivalry.

It’s easy now for me to see That I am my wetnurses’ son.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, I sing to you now of the fall of Cumhaill.

2. Tadg hated Cumhaill with a fire rarely seen.

No daughter of Tadg a mortal would marry.

He spoke to the high king to take Cumhaill down, And make Cumhaill’s captaincy unnecessary.

And so Goll Mac Morna did challenge Cumhaill, And in this pronouncement Cumhaill’s wife foretold That her husband would not live for long past that day, No matter how agile, no matter how bold.

So when the day came, Muirren fled from the scene, And Lia of Luachar struck Cumhaill down cold.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, I sing to you now of the fall of Cumhaill.

3. Now Muirren could tell when the battle was lost, And old Goll Mac Morna and all of his fighters Were scouring the countryside, both near and far, And killing Cumhaill’s brethren, not leaving survivors.

And so, the wise Muirren, she wasted no time, She knew she must make haste and flee She fled to the forest of Sliab Bladma, Gave birth to a son; named Demna was he.

Still fearing death, Muirren abandoned her son, And thus do we end this sad history.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, Thus ends our story of the fall of Cumhaill.

2. Oh, they told me I must travel far To honor my kin and destiny.

It didn’t take long for me to see A miserly man, Lia Luachar.

I slew him fast, that traitorous lout, And found my uncle Crimmal soon.

I trained with him through many a moon And I learned much, without a doubt.

3. Oh, to be a chief, I need to acknowledge The bards, the poets, the noble arts.

I sought out a druid, Crimmal’s counterpart, Who was failing to catch the Salmon of Knowledge.

But I, I got the salmon to come.

I cooked it up and cooked it well, But in that cooking I burned myself; Now to get knowledge, I just suck on my thumb.

4. Oh, one day long ago, Muirren came for me.

She’d found a husband, strong and bold, Full of protection, full of gold, But I did not her wish to see.

She cried and wailed through moon and sun, But Bodhmall and Liath didn’t let her near.

She said I’m her son, her son so dear…

But no, I’m my wetnurses’ son!

III. The Great Fair The Fair, The Great Fair.

My name is Finn. I wish to lead my clan.

You may lead Clan Baiscne, young Finn, if you complete three trials.

The first is a trial of strength.

Come here, come hie, come men, make haste!

We must bury Finn in the ground to his waist.

Fifty paces away will stand nine spearmen; With a stick and a shield only you must defend.

Each man throws his spear at a time of his pick…

And Finn made it out without even a nick.

The second is a trial of stealth.

You must go through the forest outside Tara.

My men will lie in wait to capture you.

You must avoid them for if any injury Should come to you, a chieftain you won’t be.

The third is a trial of knowledge.

What separates art from craft?

If you ask me, I think it’s a knack For blurring the boundaries, playing the games Of half-rhymes and line crossings, else you get the same Results every time you sit down to your work.

And well do I know I can’t really endure…

Can you really stop and imagine your life With methodical alg’rithms churning all night!

Nay, give me a task that needs life, that needs heart And I’ll show you the difference between craft and art.

Finn Mac Cumhaill, you are now the chieftain of Clan Baiscne.

IV. Samhain Eve On Samhain Eve, the demon comes To Tara. Fear and carnage run The length of the city. None can turn ‘gainst Aillén Mac Midgna: Aillén the Burner.

For when he plays his magic harp The defender brave, the spearman sharp – They fall into a helpless trance Here he comes now; come Finn, let’s dance!

If I defeat this demon foul, The Fian captaincy is mine With my dear Fiacha’s spear, I believe it’s finally time.

No one before knew how to use The magic that lies within the spear But with my knowledge, I can’t refuse To rid these people of their fear.

V. The Temptation of Sabd 1. We were hunting in the forest when we came upon a fawn.

(It was now approaching sunset and we had been out since dawn.)

We set our hounds upon her; they caught up with her right quick.

But instead of jumping on her, they began to sniff and lick.

The fawn, it travelled back with us, still very much alive.

When we returned, she transformed to a fair woman named Sadb.

2. I grew up as a little girl; the fawn’s a recent veil.

A druid named Fer Doirich did love me far too much.

He turned me to a fawn when I did not return his love, And I thought in that form I would remain ‘till skies above.

No magic food could save me, no glance nor kiss nor touch…

But coming to your home, it seems, has freed me from my jail.

3. Lo, not long after we first met, the wedding bells did ring.

You gave up fighting, hunting, all; your time you spent with me.

But we both knew this could not last, and soon the news did come: Out from the north invaders came; you left to fife and drum.

Until one day I thought I saw your form; it must be he!

It was the druid; once outside I turned back to a thing.

4. When I returned from battle, I searched ‘round for my wife.

I could not find her anywhere; such struggle and such strife.

For seven years, I searched in vain, for seven years I failed, Until one day my hounds did find a boy inside a vale.

Oisín his name, he did tell me; I brought him to my dun.

Raised by a fawn who’d left of late, I knew him as my son.

VI. Hostel of the Quicken Trees 1. Years and years and years long past, King Colgán came to our land We killed them all, we sent their band Back home, save Midac, Colgán’s son.

We spared him for he was still young; We took him in as one of our own, But sent him off to find a home When we feared he would turn on us.

2. One day we hunted near his house.

We rested as he came quite near.

With spells, enchantments and no fear He asked us to join him for a feast.

Unable to resist, at least, We came to sit in his great hall.

When no feast did appear, we called, But could not move; found we were trapped.

3. He has an army hidden near And has some mighty, pow’rful friends: Sinsar, King of Battles, King of Ends And three more kings from the Torrent Isle.

We must shed the kings’ blood on the floor tile, But cannot lift a leg or hand.

We must now sound the Dord-Fiann, And hope the others hear our call.

4. Oisín soon wondered why he’d heard No word from Finn and all his kin.

Fiancha went to find Midac while Innsa went to guard the ford.

An Earl of Sinsar took his sword And cut off Innsa’s lonesome head.

Fiancha too was soon found dead, But so was Midac, Colgán’s son.

5. To that same accursed ford Soon came the kings of Torrent Isle All three had ridden up in style, Yet all three soon were found quite dead The blood dripped from their severed heads Did serve quite well to break the curse, And Finn and all were none the worse To bring the battle to their foes.

6. Oisín and Finn did bring their men To crush Sinsar betwixt the two.

Yet Sinsar’s numbers grew and grew, And the Fianna soon grew tired.

But Finn’s grandson Oscar was on fire; The two agreed to combat alone.

Oscar cut Sinsar to the bone And all his men left in a rout.

VII. The Flight of Diarmait and Gráinne But Finn! But Finn! But Finn! (etc.)

Your last wife died years ago! You must have a wife!

What about Gráinne? Gráinne?

Gráinne! Gráinne!

The daughter of Cormac Mac Airt, the High King! Now there’d be a match for you!

Gráinne, do you wish to marry the Captain of the Fian?

The Fian captain! Is that the rugged Oisín? Or his dashing son Oscar? Whoever it is, what a perfect match!

Refrain: A life that I’ve always dreamed of!

A life that I’ve never had.

A man to wed, a handsome man, A man to give me all he can.

The perfect partnership in life, If only with a little strife: The partnership of man and wife!

M’lady, Finn Mac Cumhaill has arrived with his retainers for your wedding feast.

Finn? Finn Mac Cumhaill? Why, he’s old! Old enough to be – my grandfather! My great-grandfather! I cannot marry him!

Well – Oisín is handsome. But far too loyal to his father Finn to elope with me. But that Díarmait is quite attractive too. I know – I’ll drug the wine, and talk to Díarmait then.

Refrain: A life that I’ve always dreamed of!

A life that I’ve never had.

A man to wed, a handsome man, A man to give me all he can.

The perfect partnership in life, If only with a little strife: The partnership of man and wife!

Dear Díarmait, will you marry me?

Marry you? But Gráinne, you are said to marry Finn, my captain and friend.

But Díarmait, I will never love another man. You must run away with me.

Refrain: A life that I’ve always dreamed of!

A life that I’ve never had.

A man/girl to wed, a handsome man/beaut’ful girl, A man/girl to give me all s/he can.

The perfect partnership in life, If only with a little strife: The partnership of man and wife!

Díarmait, my love. Meet me outside…

VIII. Epilogue – The Battle of Gabhra 1. I sing to you now of a time long ago, When there would soon be all too much to despair in, When Cairbre Lifechair was high king o’er the land, When Cairbre Lifechair smashed the Fianna Éirann Cairbre’s daughter Sgeimhsholas was set to be wed To a prince, a high prince of the neighboring land.

But Finn did catch wind of this fav’rable match And gave him a choice ‘fore he gave out her hand: Either he must allow Finn to sleep with the lass Or pay a large sum to the chest of the Fian.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, I sing to you now of the fall of Finn Mac Cumhaill.

2. Cairbre hated Cumhaill with a fire rarely seen.

He talked to the kings of Leinster and Ulster.

They plotted and schemed to destroy the Fian; They raised a large army, coming closer and closer.

Oh, Cairbre provoked the war with the Fian By killing Ferdia, Finn’s servant and guard.

The Fianna Éirann by themselves were divided, For Old Goll Mac Morna, so ancient and scarred, Did side with the High King, did side with Cairbre, And thus did show Finn Mac Cumhaill his regard.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, I sing to you now of the fall of Finn Mac Cumhaill.

3. The battle was pitched and fought in Gabhra.

The Fianna did find themselves heav’ly outnumbered.

But Finn’s grandson Oscar found Cairbre Lifechair And they killed each other in lightning and thunder.

But then what was the fate of brave Finn Mac Cumhaill?

Born out of battle, ‘twasn’t in him to flee.

The way that he died that day isn’t recorded, But die he did, likely spectacularly.

Out of all the Fianna only two did survive, And thus do we end this sad history.

Refrain: Through glen and through meadow, through derry and dale, Thus ends our story of Finn Mac Cumhaill.
