ASDA Crest Oral-B Gold Crown Community Dentistry Award The ASDA Crest Oral-B Gold Crown Community Dentistry Award is awarded once a year recognizing chapters for their excellence in designing and implementing oral health education programs for communities that lack access to oral health education and dental care. ASDOH ASDA’s community service committee is honored to have been distinguished for our community outreach efforts this year! We reached nearly six thousand people this year with over two hundred volunteers.

Our success would not have been made possible without the dedication from all of our local chapter members who have committed their weekends and evenings to serving the community. We also would like to recognize some of our most committed members this year: Katie Takach, Nicole Tasooji, Geoff Wainwright, Kimberly Grady, Austin Shackelford, and Ashraf Hasasneh. There are many wonderful opportunities available to us on campus to enrich our lives through service, being able to provide you with some of these opportunities has been a pleasure! Being nationally recognized for our commitment to the underserved is an honor, being able to make a positive impact on our community is a privilege. Thank you!

From the Dental Chair to On April 13th, ASDOH’s legislative committee attended the National Dental Student Lobby Day held in Washington, D.C. This event brings together dental student leaders from all 65 U.S. dental schools to visit Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of the dental profession and their patients. This unique experience gives ASDA members the opportunity to meet with lawmakers and their staff to discuss the issues that will impact access to oral healthcare, dental education, and the dental profession.

Day One started with an informational session on the issues and policies that would be discussed with lawmakers and their staff. Maxine Feinberg, DDS, president of the American Dental Association, was the opening speaker of the event. She mentioned the importance of each congressional meeting and how “lobbying is an important tool of legislation that has helped provide care to those that cannot afford dental care.” Later in the day, we had two breakout sessions to practice lobbying our issues and how to conduct ourselves with our representatives.

Lobbying Point 1: Student Loan Refinancing Act which proposes to fix interest rates for the life of the student loan, unless the borrower elects to modify it again.

On Day Two, we went to Capitol Hill for our day full of Lobbying Point 2: Action for Dental Health Act which meetings with Senators, Representatives, and their staff. One of the provides additional aid to dental charities such as the day’s many highlights was meeting with Congressman Paul Gosar, a Arizona Mission of Mercy and the Arizona Community dentist in Flagstaff who was elected to Congress in 2011. After Dental Clinic. introducing ourselves, we discussed our lobbying points and our reasonings as to why we felt they were important issues in dentistry and public health. After our presentation of the two bills, Congressman Gosar shared his perspectives on each issue. Although he empathized with the plight of current dental students rising debt, he felt that the loosening the restrictions to refinancing student debt might be detrimental to the overall budget of the economy.

ASDA National Dental Student Lobby Day provided us the opportunity as dental students to speak our voices on issues that impact the future of the dental profession. This event is one of the many opportunities available to us to make an impact with the advocacy efforts concerning the dental profession. Each of us can make a difference in the public policy arena on behalf of the dental profession by becoming an ADPAC member and getting involved in our local ASDOH ASDA Legislative Committee.

Dentistry in the Dominican On the eve of Saturday, March 15, Alex Roelens, Corey Paulino, Brett Cox, and I (all D3s) embarked on a week-long journey to the Dominican Republic (DR) with Bright Island Outreach, (BIO) a non-profit cofounded by one of our own faculty, Dr. Erik Harris. I had been on mission trips abroad before but this was my first as a provider.

Traveling is something that I love to do and have been to over a dozen countries but hadn’t visited the DR, much less the Caribbean, before.

As the plane approached, one could see that the island wasn’t very big. We were greeted at the airport by Dr. Harris and Jonathan DÍaz, BIO co-founder and faculty at the local dental school (Universidad Central del Este). We were the first group of the week long scheduled trips.

Once everyone arrived to the airport we took a small bus to a resort called Talenquera, just outside of San Pedro. Talenquera is an all-inclusive resort that is built right on the beach with entertainment that included tribal fire dancing and an incredible magic show.

My favorite memory of our time here is when we took on the banana boat. Shortly after we had arrived, Alex insisted that we do it. I was reluctant at first but gave in to his fervent excitement, as did Corey, Dr. Harris, Jonathan, and Dr. White…. yes our very own Dr. White joined us! All I can say is that the GoPro clips are amazing.

The very next day we got up early and took a short drive down the coast to hop on a catamaran that took us to the island of Saona, located just off the south-east tip of DR. It is a protected nature reserve

that, by day, is a destination for tourists to spend the day at beach side cabanas with all-inclusive BBQ and beverages. Let me just say that sipping out of a coconut and eating BBQ lobster (we paid extra ) on a postcard picture perfect beach does NOT suck! At the end of the day we took a speedboat back to the port, stopping at some shallow water just off the coast from a mangrove forest where we could swim and dive for starfish shells. We drove through San Pedro, where the dental school is located, on the way home and received a tour of a very old cigar manufacture, where we were able to see how they were made by hand.

It’s Monday now and it’s go time for the outreach part of our trip. We hopped on a travel bus and drove north/inland to a mountainous region of DR called CotuÍ, one of the oldest cities in the New World.

Just south of this city is the largest and most technologically advanced gold mine in the world, owned by the Barrick mining company. Bright Island Outreach partnered with them and their community outreach team to coordinate the delivery of dental care to the local population in order to establish a more far-reaching positive impact to the surrounding communities.

After an opening ceremony lead by local leaders, we began a four-day non-stop sprint to provide dental care to what seemed like an endless line of patients. Our scope of practice mainly revolved around extractions, operative, and OHI. We were, however, able to perform a few RCTs on some anterior teeth in order to save some smiles. This experience was invaluable because we were able to spring from the solid foundation that ASDOH has afforded us but land in a situation completely out of our comfort zone. You may not have all of your favorite burs, or all the materials you’re familiar with, or the very best of instruments but you have a patient in a white lawn chair, leaning their heads back onto a table with a paper towel roll or box of gloves as a headrest and you need to make it happen as efficiently as possible at the highest quality achievable. A major aspect of dentistry is problem solving, especially at this stage of our careers where we’re limited in our experiences.

Necessity is the mother of invention and there were times when you would select an instrument for something other than its intended use because it looked like it would get the job done. Soft tissue start?

Prep check?

Final check to be set complete?...... Nope! We were autonomous but we had Dr. Harris, Dr. White, and Dr. Bob (a really cool dentist from New York) at our disposal if we had any question at all.

If we stayed there indefinitely, the need for care would continue. I came to the realization that some care was better than no care, especially when addressing urgent conditions, however what kind of long term impact were we making? I believe that promoting prevention is how we can impact a

community in a long-lasting and sustainable way. Dr. White has a history in another region of DR where he has coordinated previous mission trips through the years.

He established relationships with promotoras, or community health promoters, to help them teach proper OHI and provide some preventive care. In a relatively short time he has seen communities go from rampant caries among the children to very little or no caries. This kind of impact is incredible and something we wanted to incorporate in our trip.

ASDOH is also working to embed this component into every global outreach trip that ASDOH students are involved in.

We wrapped up the week with a tour of the Barrick Pueblo Viejo gold mine, a hike to multiple waterfalls, and a visit to the capitol city of Santo Domingo, where we saw the home of Christopher Columbus among other historical landmarks.

After some street shopping for souvenirs we returned to Talenquera where we welcomed the second group arriving to start the next round. We had a wonderful dinner with both group one and two at a beachfront restaurant. It was our last Corona commercial moment before we had to be shuttled to the airport for our trek back home.

This was an amazing experience. Dr. Harris and Jonathan did an incredible job organizing a memorable week with a nice balance of work and play.

Outreach and connecting with the community is a big part of why I was motivated to pursue dentistry. Going on trips like this offers you the opportunity to help a population in need, experience cultural immersion, and travel to places you have never been nor would have visited otherwise. I definitely plan to have more of these experiences throughout my career and highly recommend you go too!

Mugs & Morals The strong ethics founda1on that is promoted by ASDOH ASDA was exemplified by the student professionalism and ethics commi?ee’s first Mugs & Morals event this year. Students across all four years gathered at a local bar on a Friday evening to discuss ethical situa1ons in den1stry. The cases discussed covered special needs den1stry, maleficence, informed consent and autonomy. The maiden voyage of Mugs & Morals was lively with great conversa1on, laughs and dental enlightenment. 35 students showing up on a Friday night blew some minds (especially Dr. Tim Lukavsky and Dr. Mindy Motahari who graciously arbitrated the event), but 35 students showing up on a Friday night more for the Morals than the Mugs made the place explode (metaphorically). The topics discussed proved interes1ng and intriguing for all the students, illustra1ng situa1ons that the students may be faced with in the future. There will certainly be another round of Mugs & Morals in the future. ~ Erik Klintmalm ‘18

ASDOH Hosts GKAS National Kickoff 2015:

“Today, It’s All About the Kids: Behind the Scenes of the 2015 GKAS Kickoff”

There is an unexplainable excitement in the air every year when the annual Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) event rolls around at Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). It has become a fond tradition at ASDOH. As the day begins, there is a sense of organized chaos, with every student, volunteer dentist and pre-dental having a very specific and important role. Kids are brought by the dozens and filtered through clinics, which include screenings, hygiene, operative, specialty and so on.

After receiving dental care, the kids wait outside at the carnival. The carnival is packed with storybook and cartoon characters such as Elsa, Maleficent, the Ninja Turtles, and various superheroes, each manning a game station.

Give Kids A Smile day means more than giving over $250,000 of dental services to underserved children. The event is more than a public health intervention or opportunity for students to treat hundreds of kids. It is a culmination of an entire year’s worth of planning, preparation, and fundraising that culminates in a reward far greater than the cost. Give Kids A Smile is the essence of dentistry. Volunteers use their knowledge to change others’ lives but, in turn, change their own. GKAS 2015 was extra special because ASDOH hosted the American Dental Association reception and kickoff for the nationwide Give Kids A Smile program.

What goes into making this event so special?

Volunteers, in the student-run Give Kids A Smile committee at Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, meet monthly throughout the year to collaborate with administration, alumni, local universities, dental professionals, clinics and businesses. Each meeting grows in importance and anticipation for the day we get to help children who might not otherwise receive dental care.

Because of the large responsibility, each dental class has different duties on the day of the event. Some students help treat patients or assist local volunteering dentists, while others lead operations and preparation.

Still others set-up supplies and entertainment tents, coordinate pre-dental volunteering efforts, escort children from check-in to check-out, comfort anxious children, guide buses or provide translation services when needed.

For many ASDOH students, administration, and local volunteers, the Give Kids A Smile day starts before 5:30 am. Entertainment tents are set-up, supplies dispersed, breakfast provided, and operations ready to function before any of the children arrive. Dental operatories within the dental school were intricate and well organized. As a result, over 500 underserved children were assisted in just six hours. In the words of the Dean of Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Dr. Jack Dillenberg, “Today, it’s all about the kids”. The energy of volunteers and children alike was unimaginable and laughter from both parties was heard throughout the day. While the children were treated to healthy smiles, lasting smiles were given to the volunteers. Though many volunteers dressed up as superheroes, the real heroes were those that gave their time, hands, and hearts to provide dental services for the children. When people are dedicated and working together for the same common goal, to give kids a smile, the sense of achievement is unparalleled.

As the day winded down, committee members and volunteers alike, had sore feet and aching bodies but smiling faces after helping contribute to the wellbeing of over 500 children, our future, and our community. The annual Give Kids A Smile event had come to an end but the memories will be cherished for a long time to come. Time to start planning for next year.

Vendor Fair 2015 ASDA’s annual vendor fair was held on March 11th and was a great success. There were 23 vendors and over 250 ASDOH students and faculty members in attendance. It was an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest dental products, network with corporate dental groups, and get advice from financial planners. Representatives from Crest passed out electric toothbrush heads, toothpaste, and Crest-SensiStop Strips, while vendors such as Henry Schein, Medical Protective, and Eagleston Financial Group gave out stylus pens and reusable bags.

There were other freebies as well, with raffle prizes including an iPad, Visa gift cards, electric toothbrushes, and gym bags. A big thank you goes out to Heartland Dental who sponsored lunch from Jason’s Deli and the D1 class for setting up and breaking down the tents for this event. ~Katie Takach ‘18

Spread the Word to End the R-Word!

From March 4-6, our students collected signatures from people who pledge to not use the derogatory and offensive word “retarded”. The purpose of this campaign is to encourage the use of the more appropriate phrase “intellectual disability.”

This campaign was founded by

Olympians Sports Expo in conjunction with this pledge campaign on March 4 during lunch hour. We joined forces with Special Olympics Arizona and had fun dancing, playing soccer, touch football, and basketball. Our pledges are part of the movement that has collected 549,781 online

college students Soeren Palumbo (Notre Dame 2011) and Tim Shriver (Yale 2011) in 2009 and is continued today to show how language affects attitudes.

Using people first language is the best way to be respectful and accepting of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our school hosted a Special

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. R. Todd Erickson DDS, MS 1. 1. Tell us more about why you chose to pursue such a unique specialty - Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology? Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology (OMR) was established as the 9th ADA recognized specialty in 1999. Radiology plays an important role in practically every field of dentistry. OMR is a very unique specialty because it is an adjunctive tool utilized in most areas of dentistry which complements the clinical exam and medical/dental history that will assist the practitioner in determining an accurate diagnosis and any subsequent treatment. As practitioners, most dentists will simultaneously be their own radiologist and be required to interpret and diagnose from the images they acquire in their practice setting. Thereby, only referring to an OMR when they have an unusual finding, desire confirmation of a diagnosis, or a second opinion.

Dentists chose to specialize for a variety of reasons and times in their career. Some may practice general dentistry and later decide they particularly enjoy one facet of dentistry and pursue specialty training. Most people do not realize that the actual practice of dentistry can lead to physical injury which requires them to shift career paths. My track to the specialty of OMR is unique but not completely unusual. Prior to pursuing specialty training in radiology I was an oral surgeon in private practice.

As a consequence of practicing oral surgery, I sustained significant noise induced hearing loss which resulted in an occupational disability and necessitated discontinuing the practice of oral surgery. At this point, I started a journey to discover a new career, not necessarily in dentistry. However, during my quest for a new career, I discovered and developed a profound interest in the relatively new imaging modality of CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) which was revolutionary for dentistry. I had completely overlooked this specialty before. Now I figured I could build upon my previous education and experience in dentistry as an oral surgeon and provide a unique perspective as an OMR in an academic role teaching in a dental school. I recently completed the specialty training in oral & maxillofacial radiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and began my faculty position at ASDOH in July, 2014.

2. In your opinion, what are the most promising developments in your specialty?

Obviously, there has been much advancement in radiology since x-rays were first discovered and utilized in medicine and dentistry in 1895. The most recent technological advancement in dental radiology has indisputably been CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). For the first time, 3D imaging is readily available in dentistry. Prior to the development of the CBCT unit (which started in medicine) the dental practitioner had to rely upon 2D imaging unless the patient was referred to a local hospital or medical imaging center for a conventional MDCT (Multi-Detector Computed Tomography) scan which was inconvenient, very costly and delivered a large dose of ionizing radiation to the patient. CBCT scanning technology has been available to the dental practitioner since 2001 in the United States and has grown exponentially. Most experts agree that CBCT imaging will become ubiquitous in dentistry much like the panoramic imaging modality in the 1970’s and 80’s. Almost every practice will utilize and provide this type of imaging.

CBCT like MDCT scans are not used to diagnose caries. Conventional intraoral radiography remains the gold standard for caries detection. However, for dental implant treatment planning, the CBCT has arguably become almost the standard of care. The accuracy and ability to view the maxillary and mandibular bony anatomy in three dimensions has provided a more predictable and successful overall outcome for dental implant treatment in many cases. The CBCT scan is also invaluable for identifying maxillofacial hard tissue pathology, traumatic injuries, developmental skeletal anomalies, impacted, malposed teeth, and jaw alignment incongruence’s. This CBCT image data has provided the oral surgeon, periodontist, and orthodontist additional information to diagnose and treatment plan, as well as, track and document the progress of treatment that has been initiated. Another area in which CBCT imaging has been adopted is the evaluation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to its ability to precisely measure the 3D volume of the upper airway.

There are no doubt, many other utilizations of CBCT technology yet to be discovered, which makes radiology an exciting area of dentistry. The dental student of today is aware that they will most likely be incorporating the CBCT technology into their practice of dentistry in one way or another. Like other areas of dentistry, continuing education in the field of radiology will be essential upon completion of their formal dental school training.

3. What should a student do while in dental school if he/she wants to pursue a radiology specialty?

While in dental school, the best approach is to learn as much as possible about all the disciplines and specialties in the field of dentistry. Some students are able to determine very early that they want to pursue specialty training and exclusively practice in that area. Most students will plan to practice general dentistry and perhaps determine later that they desire to specialize.

Two or three additional years of additional training are now required to become an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. The third year is primarily devoted to research if the resident desires to simultaneously pursue a Master’s of Science (MS) degree. Due to the increasing demand for OMR’s, more OMR residency programs are being established. Most are dental school based

4. Can you give us a snapshot of what an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology specialist does on a daily basis? (need to reword it better) 3D image

The specialty of OMR is unique in that the practitioner will primarily focus on diagnostic tasks. They are no longer directly involved with delivering treatment and do not work in a typical clinical practice setting seeing patients. They are more “behind the scene”, so to speak.

There are two basic career paths to function as an OMR. 1) An academic position in a dental school in which the OMR is involved with teaching the science of ionizing radiation, radiation safety, radiology technique, radiology modalities, and interpretation of radiographic findings. Most, if not all dental schools, now have at least one full time OMR as part of their faculty staff. 2) The OMR establishes a private practice CBCT reading and interpretation service in which they build a referral base of practitioners that send them the CBCT volume to evaluate and generate a report for a fee. Most of these people would practice from their home.

6. What is the most fulfilling part of your specialty?

While here at ASDOH, I definitely enjoy working with the outstanding group of students at the school. I find it very satisfying when I can contribute to their educational experience and demonstrate to them how different radiographic imaging modalities can complement the other diagnostic tools they use to evaluate and treat the patients that rely upon them for their care. The students are beginning their journey on a wonderful and special career path. I am honored to be associated with ASDOH

5. Any interesting and unique stories about your career that you would like to share?

I completed my OMR training less than one year ago so my direct experience as an oral & maxillofacial radiologist is limited. However, with my background as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, in this short period of time I can see how invaluable this technology is to the practice of dentistry. For example, the ease in which implant treatment can now be accomplished and a surgical guide fabricated has allowed greater accuracy and fewer complications. Mimi’s DelecTable Table Cho-DANG good Ribs If you’re craving spicy, bubbling tofu stew filled with probiotic kimchi goodness but somehow haven’t bothered looking because you’re aware of the fact that most Korean food in Phoenix might as well be called cardboard, then look no further. Chodang Tofu and BBQ located in Chandler makes the cut. Although boasting a street sign that reminds me of a middle American strip mall, Chodang impressed with the variety of small dishes and yummy BibimBap hot stone bowl.

But let’s not forget the BBQ, which is the real reason I will be coming back. If you are anything like me and tired of Mesa chain BBQ restaurants that advertise a good BBQ but end up smothering all their meat with sauces that make you regret eating a few hours later, than Korean BBQ may be your saving grace. As a converted vegetarian, I maintain my vegetable-eating vows as long as good meat isn’t near my vicinity, but unfortunately the Chodang Galbi BBQ short ribs made me break these less than sacred vows. Marinated in a secret sauce of heavenly goodness that evaporated somewhere during the cooking process, these amazing ribs were soft, moist, flavorful, and probably made for some Korean God. So if you get nothing else, definitely try the Cho-dang BBQ ribs, they are sure to make you say dang!

The everyday Farmer’s Market Farmers markets are great, right? Except for the fact that there is only ever one Farmer’s Market near you and it always has to be on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning.

As I lay fast asleep on such days, a Farmer’s Market located many miles away is not a substantially motivating factor to drag me from under my plush down comforter. I tell myself, it’s fine, I’ll just go to Sprouts on Monday. But when Monday rolls around and I’m looking at the piles of overly priced organic produce, I become utterly disappointed in no, not myself, but that damn plush down comforter that made me be so lazy.

But for all us weekend relaxers or partiers, who don’t prioritize spending half of their marvelous day-off going to a Farmer’s Market, I’m happy to announce that I have found the solution.

Technically a grocery store, Power Road Farmer’s Market, located near Power and E. Elliot, is the perfect solution for foodies who want to be foodies, but just don’t have the time.

Open every day from 9am to 6pm, this Farmer’s Market has homemade everything, including local honey, produce, kettle corn, store-made molasses and even fresh tortillas. If you’re looking for entertainment while grocery shopping, check out the bee hive in the left corner of the market, but don’t worry, its surrounded by glass, so you can watch the busy

Next door there is a children’s play area with a seasonal corn maze and Mesa’s biggest tube slides. Starting this week there will be outdoor movie nights every Friday and a food truck gathering every Saturday night. But if you’re like me and need a change from Starbucks coffee, make sure to try Gill’s Grounds coffee shop located in this same dirt road plaza. A tiny converted cabin that was made into a coffee shop drivethru, Gil started this little place in January after serving with the army for 20 years. Throughout his travels, he made connections for some of the best teas worldwide and now imports them in bulk. If anyone enjoys extravagant teas like pu-erh with rose or matcha, let Gil know and he’ll be sure to set you up.

All in all, Power Road Farmer’s Market and associated businesses make the cut for the best substitute in town for all your organic, delicious grocery needs complete with child entertainment and well-priced, mouth-watering coffees and teas.
