Natchitoches Day at the Capitol (pictured left) is an event that takes place under the dome during the Legislative Session. It makes Legislators — from our area and around the state — aware of issues specific to Natchitoches Parish.

Short Courses are a series of classes offered to Chamber members at no cost — from stress and time management to communication and leadership.

Broadband and Technology Expansion provides our community with high-speed internet access as well as implementing new technologies to the area.

Monthly Luncheons provide an opportunity build our member’s professional networks and learn about hot topics in the community, region, and state.

Chamber of Commerce

Committees & Initiatives Natchitoches Ambassadors are volunteers from Chamber member businesses who create events such as CRAVE! Natchitoches and the Chamber Annual Awards Luncheon.

Natchitoches Young Professionals (NYP) is devoted to developing current and future local business leaders.

Membership is available to anyone between the ages of 21 and 40 who lives, works, learns, or plays in the greater Natchitoches area.

The Military Affairs Committee is dedicated to creating a stronger bond between the Natchitoches Community and the community of Fort Polk. The Committee helps coordinate local efforts to serve military personnel, map services for improvement, and share activities with the public.

The Education Committee works towards providing Natchitoches Parish access to higher quality education.

Funds from this program have provided enhancements in local early childhood education centers, Pre-k to 12 classrooms, and boosted support for programs with the local technical college and state university.

The Workforce Development Committee, in conjunction with local institutions of higher education, helps equip the workforce with a variety of careers. The Committee also leads the ACT Work Ready Community program that focuses on strengthening workforce skills and building a strong pipeline of talent.

Natchitoches Young Professionals In August of 2016, Baton Rouge was devastated by a raging flood. Natchitoches Young Professionals (NYP) worked with local businesses and organizations to donate thousands of dollars’ worth of cleaning supplies, bottled water, and emergency disposables for those affected.

NYP and the Chamber partnered with Lott Oil Company, Inc., City Bank & Trust Company, Exchange Bank, Sabine State Bank & Trust, Bank of Montgomery, Bolton Realty, S&S Flower Shop, Brookshire’s, and the community at-large. Critical supplies arrived at a distribution center in Baton Rouge via semi trailer. Hundreds of families benefited from this collaborative effort.

Alive in the City of

Natchitoches.

It’s believed that the first American flag flown after the Louisiana Purchase was raised in Natchitoches.

In

the early 1700s, an enterprising French expedition stumbled upon the future location of Natchitoches. During this expedition, Louis Juchereau de St. Denis struck up a relationship with the Natchitoches tribe of Caddo Indians. In 1714, St. Denis, accompanied by the Caddo Indians, resettled on the banks of the Red River. This marked the official founding of the city of Natchitoches — our home.

Fort St. Jean Baptiste was built as the village grew and was threatened by encroaching Spanish settlements. The settlement bloomed with the addition of the Fort and its military additions. The city soon became allies and trade partners with the surrounding Spanish settlements, as well as various American Indian tribes.

Soon after the French and Indian war, all territory to the west of the Mississippi River was gifted to Spain

by France to compensate them for the loss of two of their territories during the French and Indian War. Fort St. Denis, once a location of strategic

importance, was abandoned under Spanish rule.

The fort itself was lost to time, but today a replica stands in its stead. The residents of the town resettled themselves around the new church, now the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, built on what is now the corner of Front and Church streets.

The Northwest LA History Museum

With the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, plantations expanded. Tobacco and indigo production slowed as cotton became the primary crop of the region. During this time, it was acceptable for planters to have relationships with the African slaves or the American Indians. These children, a blend of French, American Indian, African, and even Spanish lineage, were often granted their freedom. They became known as the “gens de couleur libres” or “free people of color,” a distinct class unto themselves. Many of them became planters settling in the Red River Valley where there was an abundance of rich farmland.

This attraction brings 3,000 years of history forward to the unique cultural traditions that survive and thrive in the region today.

The museum tells the story of how diverse groups of people — Caddo Indians, French and Spanish settlers, free and enslaved Africans, and rural southern whites — created the region’s distinctive culture. With displays of artifacts dating from the 1700s, this museum celebrates the explorers, artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and human rights leaders who embodied northwest Louisiana’s resilient spirit.

Exhibits focus on seven major themes. Living Traditions, for example, explores present-day handicrafts, cuisine, and social customs as found in the Cane River Creole community of Isle Brevelle.

In 1801, Spain returned the territory to France and less than two years later, the territory was sold to the United States of America by Napoleon. This acquisition, known as the Louisiana Purchase, was continued on page 10...

one of the largest territories acquired through peaceful means. It’s believed that the first American flag was flown in Natchitoches at the site of the present-day Events Center. While it was a peaceful purchase, the people themselves were in turmoil. Incoming Americans were unsettled by the Creole community, but soon, the town adapted and the residents found a way to coexist with these new beliefs.

Another area changed by the incoming Americans was the Great Raft, a hundred-mile natural logjam on the Red River. Dismantled to further north bound travel on the Red River towards Shreveport, the alterations made to the river channel caused the Red River to shift. By the 1870s, the river had bypassed Natchitoches completely; thus, today, Cane River Lake extends from just north of Natchitoches to nearly 30 miles south.

As one of the oldest permanent settlements in the Louisiana Purchase, it’s as simple as looking around to see glimpses into our past. Much of the historic architecture is preserved, in fact, Natchitoches hosts a 33-block National Historic Landmark District that feature dozens of properties on the Historic Register.

Clementine Hunter At the age of 42, Clementine Hunter’s artistic talent began to blossom as she made quilts in vibrant colors.

At the age of 54, she began to paint. Over the next 40 years, Clementine produced 4000+ paintings. Her first painting sold for nly 25¢.

The Northwest Louisiana History Museum offers a different glimpse into the past. One of Louisiana’s most famous folk artists, Clementine Hunter, born at Hidden Hill (now known as Little Eva Plantation) in December of 1886 (est), is featured in a permanent display at the Museum. She has been credited as a social and cultural historian through her artwork, which documented plantation life in the early 20th century. At age 54, Clementine began to paint. A self-taught artist, her portrayal of picking cotton, washing clothes, baptisms, and funerals were an open window into the past. The first painting Clementine sold was purchased for 25¢ — today they’re worth thousands of dollars. She was gifted an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts in 1986 by the Northwestern State University.

Our past has gifted this region with a diverse blend of cultures, traditions, histories, talents, and religions. All of this has floavored our city — from our way of life to the food we eat. Witout our vibrant history, Natchitoches would’t be the great place it is today.

River National Heritage Trail visits

32 historic sites winding through the heart of Natchitoches Parish. One such site, the Cane River Creole National Historical Park, offers a view into life along the Cane River hundreds of years ago. Established in 1994, this 63-acre park includes two French Creole cotton plantations — Magnolia Plantation and Oakland Plantation. Both are the most intact French Creole cotton plantations in the United States.

Visitors can explore this park from the perspectives of the original landowners, overseers, enslaved workers, skilled workers, and tenant farmers who once called these plantations home.

Christmas in Natchitoches

Natchitoches has been celebrating Christmas in style for more than 90 years. Beginning the Saturday before Thanksgiving, thousands of people gather at dusk to watch more than 300,000 lights and 100 set pieces sparkle.

During the festival season, firework displays light up the sky every Saturday night, reaching their climax during Festival Day. While the event concludes on January 6 – the day of Epiphany — our festive spirit continues throughout the year.

Recently, The Christmas Festival was ranked #3 in Yahoo’s “Best Holiday Light Show.” Only New York’s Rockefeller Center and Disney World can outdo our Christmas Spirit.

If more low-key outdoor activities are your passion, you’ll enjoy our ever-evolving park system. Natchitoches City Park went through some exciting changes and reopened in June 2017. This location now boasts a pocketamphitheater giving us a new outdoor performance venue for live concerts and performances. Much of the entertainment will come forth from a partnership with performance departments of Northwestern State University (NSU) and the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and Art (LSMSA). Other improvements to the park included new pavilions, security lighting, benches, and an expansion of the parking lot. The existing swimming pool and walking track were spruced up to entice all community members to get out and move it!

American Cemetery, 1737 (estimated)

Established in 1737 (est.), this cemetery is thought to be on the location of the second Fort St. Jean Baptiste. History explains this to be the final resting place of all residents of the fort regardless of race or class. St. Denis, the town’s founder, is thought to be buried on the grounds. Steel Magnolias fans will recognize this as the final resting place of Shelby.

Badin-Roque House, 1796 (est.)

This is a rare example of an early Creole building style known as poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground). In this style, the vertical frame timbers of the house were placed in holes and filled with stones or dirt. Through careful construction, this structure contains no nails. It’s believed that this is the only remaining building of this style in Louisiana. This home was built by Jean Baptiste Metoyer, grandson of Marie Thérèse Coincoin and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer. It was sold to the Catholic diocese of Natchitoches in 1858 to be used as the first convent and school of St. Augustine Catholic Church. By appointment only.

B eau Fort Plantation (Narcisse Prud’homme), 1790 (est.)

Legend dictates that this home was built on the original site of Fort Charles. One unique feature of this house is its “Strangers’ Room” — a small bedroom in the house not connected to the interior of the house. Such rooms were common along the Cane River to allow owners to offer lodging to travelers without suffering the danger of opening their homes to criminals. Private Residence.

Bishop Martin Museum

Located in the Bishop’s Rectory, across the street from the Basilica, this structure was used to house and educate seminarians. Today the Bishop Martin Museum is a depository for church artifacts, a silver bell dated 1836, and records dating back to 1724. It is named for Augustine Martin, first bishop of the Catholic Natchitoches Diocese.

Cane River Creole National Historic Park

Home to the former Magnolia Plantation House and all its outbuildings. The whole site encompasses 18 acres, which are open to the public to tour free of charge. The park includes a blacksmith and plantation shops, cabins, a gin barn, and a former slave hospital. In the gin barn remains a wooden screw-type cotton press; it’s the last of its kind remaining on its original grounds in the US.

Cane River Lake

Cane River Lake is a shallow, oxbow lake formed from a portion of the Red River. You’ll find this natural beauty running through Natchitoches’ historic downtown. Although the lake is about 32 miles in length, it averages only 250 feet in width, giving it a surface of less than 1,000 acres.

Caspiana Plantation Store, 1906

Originally located on the Caspiana Plantation in Caddo Parish, this building was cut in half and moved to Natchitoches. As a seed and equipment store in the croplien system, this store allowed farmers to use their future crop as collateral. High interest rates often led to poor farmers getting trapped further in debt. The store lasted only 10 years. Today it is home to a car dealership and private tax office.

Cedar Bend Plantation

The manor is a 19th century French Colonial house once owned by Gabriel Prud’homme and his wife Algae. Family tradition states that during the Red River Campaign, the family raised the French Flag outside the house to save it from destruction.

E l Camino Real de los Tejas Nat’l Historic Trail, 1700s

This trail is 2,500-miles in length — starting right here in Natchitoches. For centuries the Native Americans had used the trail routes for trading between the Great Plains and Chihuahuan Desert regions. The El Camino Real de Los Tejas was first followed and marked by Spanish explorers and missionaries in the 1700s.

It was one of several named El Camino Real, or ‘royal road,’ that connected the Spanish possessions in North America with Mexico City.

Fort Jesup, 1822

After the Louisiana Purchase, a border dispute arose between the Spanish and US. Both sides agreed to recognize a “Neutral Strip” of land until the dispute was settled. Fort Jesup was established on that strip to maintain the peace. The future US President, General Zachary Taylor, successfully presided over Fort Jesup the entire time it was active.

John Carrol Jones House, 1818

This home was built by a wealthy Creole planter. After the Civil War, it was purchased by John Jones, an African-American from Tennessee, and his Choctaw Indian wife, Catherine. This interracial couple bred several champion race horses and became a very successful planter. Private Residence.

Jones Roque House, 1845

Little Eva Plantation/Hidden Hill

Shop back in time at an authentic mercantile. Adolph and Harris Kaffie, JewishPrussian immigrants, built both a legacy and an iconic building in Natchitoches.

They began running a mercantile business in 1863, but necessity required that they build a bigger building in 1893. In 1920, Kaffie hired Titus Fredrick who bought into the company in 1954. You can still buy just about anything you need in the store today! The 1910 cash register is still in use.

Keegan originally built this stately home as the main house on the Elzey Plantation. In 1881, with the arrival of the mighty railroad, Keegan decided to pick the house up and move it a couple miles away to become a railroad hotel.

It’s estimated that the move was completed in the mid 1880s. In 1994, the house was restored and now serves as a bed and breakfast.

Lemee House, 1837

Built by Italian contractors in 1837, this house contains many Mediterranean influences. It was bought by Alex Lemee in 1849 and served as his home, as well as, a branch of the Union Bank of New Orleans. Steel Magnolias fans will recognize this as Ouizer Boudreaux’s home.

Lewis Jones House, 1847

The Jones family, free people of color, came into possession of the property in the early 1900s. The house is one of Louisiana’s most significant examples of the French Creole style of architecture. It has the standard Creole features such as bousillage construction, a large gallery, and an umbrella-like all-encompassing roof-line. In addition, it houses rare wraparound mantels with ornamentals.

Little Eva Plantation/Hidden Hill

This is the official birthplace of Clementine Hunter, and legend has it, the location of the real-life inspiration of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Originally known as “Bermuda,” this is one of the nation’s most intact examples of a French Creole cotton plantation. It was built by Jean Prud’homme on land granted by the Spanish government. The main house and 27 historic outbuildings still stand on this property. The Horse Soldiers, a 1959 movie starring John Wayne, was filmed at this location.

Now serving as the library for the Natchitoches Genealogical and Historical Association, this building was originally constructed as the courthouse for all of Natchitoches Parish. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1933 and has been renovated several times since. However, the original clock has been preserved.

Experience the story of how various folk music, early gospel, and string band music laid way for the country sounds of today. An amphitheater offers concerts featuring gospel, country and folk music, as well as the Annual Fiddling Championship. Home of the grave of the Unknown Confederate Soldier.

Prud’homme-Rouquier House, 1790-1811

Constructed between 1790 and 1811 by Frances Rouquier and his wife, Marie Louise Prud’homme, this French Creole building was remodeled in 1825 to resemble the Federal or Greek Revival style. This home is unique as it was built entirely in the French Creole method of bousillage (a mixture of mud, Spanish moss, and deer hair). It is the only known example of a two-story bousillage structure in the nation. Owned and operated by the Service League of Natchitoches.

The first thing you’ll notice about Narcisse Prudhomme’s Oaklawn Plantation is the long, majestic oak alley gracing the entrance. The plantation survived the Civil War and fell in and out of the family hands until recently, when it was purchased by playwright Robert Harling. Harling is best known for his play and movie, Steel Magnolias, that was filmed in Natchitoches (1988). Private Residence.

Built by a freed slave named Yves in 1803, this structure is a fine example of French Creole architecture, made of bousillage and cypress half-timbers.

Constructed on Yves’ 91-acre farmstead about 22 miles south of Natchitoches along the Cane River. Later the house was moved to historic district in downtown Natchitoches where it sits on the riverbank of Cane River Lake.

St. Charles Borromeo Chapel

This chapel is a mission church to St. Augustine Catholic Church. It represents the only known instance in the United States of a white mission congregation sponsored by a church whose members were primarily people of color.

Built in 1850 by Samuel Eldridge Guy, the house once was the centerpiece of a working plantation in Mansfield, Louisiana. The house remained in the Guy family for 150 years. In 2002, the house was purchased from the Guy Family and moved to Natchitoches where renovations ensued. Today this beautiful home is a bed and breakfast gracing the back entrance to the American Cemetery.

St. Matthew High School, 1916

In 1916, prior to school integration, St. Matthew Baptist Church began to provide secondary education opportunities to hundreds of rural black and Creole children.

In 1947, began awarding high school diplomas. In 1952, a modern brick school was opened and occupied until 1989.

This is the first Roman Catholic church established by and for people of color in the US. This is the third church on the site. Cane River Creole patriarch, Augustin Metoyer, established the church. His portrait hangs inside.

Texas & Pacific Railroad Depot, 1927

This depot is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and Spanish Revival styles. With separate entrances and waiting rooms, it demonstrates how segregation was consciously planned into architectural design. The beams and windows of the main waiting room were made to resemble those of the master’s cabin of the Santa Maria — Christopher Columbus’ ship.

Louisiana is working toward a unified Early Childhood System as directed by Act 3 of the 2012 Regular Legislative Session.

When fully implemented, the local networks will expand access to high quality, publicly-funded, early education programs to families across Louisiana. The result will be extraordinary, as more children who enter school will be kindergarten ready. In the first phase of implementation, the state will work with communities to develop policies to fully unify the statewide early childhood system and expand early childhood pilots statewide. The Natchitoches Parish School District serves approximately 6,700 students and consists of 13 elementary through middle schools and two high schools.

Altogether, the school district employs around 500 teachers. Our student-to-teacher ratio is approximately 13 to 1, so students receive the assistance they need to excel academically.

Recently, our school district received its highest district score to date, according to the Louisiana State Department of Education. We’re proud to announce that our performance scores for the 2016-2017 academic year reflect that Natchitoches Parish School District grew 6.8 points to achieve a “B” letter grade.

Natchitoches Parish District and School Performance Scores Released

November 17, 2016 – District and school level performance scores were released by the Louisiana State Department of Education today.

Natchitoches Parish School District grew 6.8 points to achieve a “B” letter grade. Our district earned the maximum of 10 progress points for students previously below Good/ Basic, but who exceeded expectations in the current year. The released scores indicate 87% of NPSB schools maintained or improved their letter grade standing. The district demonstrated an improvement in six components: Assessment Index for Grades 3-8 (+2.5), Dropout Credit Accumulation Index (+6.7), ACT Assessment Index, (+27.9), Strength of Diploma (+8.3), Cohort Graduation Rate Index (+17.8), and Cohort Graduation Rate (+8.9).

The percentage of students in grades 3-8 who achieved mastery in all four subjects – math, English, science, and social studies – rose six percentage points to 30%.

The Legend of Isabella at Northwestern State University

Isabella was a beautiful young woman who lived in the Bullard Mansion on what would become the campus of the Louisiana Normal School. She was engaged to a business man from the East, who was tragically killed in a duel shortly before the wedding. Overcome by grief and despair, Isabella chose to become a nun.

One stormy night, in a spiral of tears and sadness, Isabella took her life by plunging a dagger into her heart leaving behind a mysterious bloody handprint on the wall.

Since then, her spirit has roamed the NSU campus.

Whenever she tires of her residence, or if tragedy befalls the building, the students gather at night to ceremoniously guide her to a new resting place. with confidence. This is just one example why CLTCC recently landed on Aspen’s Top 150 Community/ Technical Colleges in the USA. The Natchitoches Parish Library has multiple locations: the Main Branch on Second Street in downtown Natchitoches; the Northeast Branch in Campti; the Bookmobile; and, the Schoolmobile. Combined, more than 80,000 books are available in the public library system. Understanding the many factors impacting health and wellness in Natchitoches, and then coming together to address them is critical to creating a healthier community. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why in the spring of 2017, NRMC initiated a Community Health Needs Assessment in a collaborative effort with area health professionals, parish leaders, business leaders, and the community. The study is part of a systematic approach to address the short- and long-term health needs of the community.

Recognizing that there is a community component needed to turn around the grim statistics of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and other health concerns including immunizations, good nutrition, and early diagnosis and treatment, many community leaders and organizations joined NRMC in discussions. By working as a community and sharing a common vision, the goal is to create partnerships and new opportunities for moving the health of the community in a more positive direction.

A national research company, Stratasan, helped collect, quantify, and interpret the data gained from the study. They conducted community focus groups, interviewed residents, and surveyed community members about health concerns and needs. There was also a community health summit where individuals from many local organizations came together to discuss the possible action steps. This summit now serves as a foundation for further collaboration.

As NRMC implements its organizational plans for 2017 and makes its short-and long-term goals and objectives, it does so as a multidisciplinary team of Associates and Physicians. Since NRMC began operations in 1955 as a stand-alone community hospital, it has grown into a 216-bed healthcare system. In the process, the AMT Program offers the ability to apply classroom discoveries on the manufacturing floor immediately.

It’s not a typical college degree program. Students attend class full time two days a week and work at a sponsoring manufacturer three days.

They learn essential manufacturing principles and develop productive work behaviors that provide excellent selfdevelopment skills that are attractive to employers. The curriculum implements the multidisciplinary, multi-skilled model with courses in electricity, fluid power, mechanics, fabrication, troubleshooting, problem-solving, etc.

What is the End Result of the AMT Program?

Students completing the AMT Program earn an Associate of Science Degree in Engineering Technology from Northwestern State University (NSU). This degree,

combined with additional technical courses through the Northwest Louisiana Technical College (NWLTC) — Natchitoches Campus, result in an AMT Certificate from NWLTC. This program combines cuttingedge curriculum with paid work experience and integrates highly soughtafter business principles and best practices of worldclass manufacturers.
