Early Childhood Family Education Baby Talk Let’s talk babies! Bring yourself and your babies (up to 12 months) for a beginning of the week boost!

Caregivers and infants will be together to share in learning, laughter, and support with a brief infantappropriate circle time at the end of class.

This will be lead by Karn Schwartzhoff, Parent Educator, and Catie Wold, Early Childhood Educator.

Time to Connect Ages 0-5 Come Friday mornings to connect with one another and other families through song, play, projects, and learning. Following 45 minutes of open play and a short circle time, children stay with early childhood staff and parents go to a separate room to enjoy learning and conversation centered on parenting topics of the group’s choice.

A light snack is included for the children.

Early Childhood Screening What is Early Childhood Screening?

During screening we will check your child's: Vision** & Hearing Thinking & Communication Skills Height & Weight Social & Emotional Development Large & Small motor skills ** Early childhood developmental screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

Let’s get the creative juices flowing! Join Bernie for our “CRAFTING CLUB,” where each day is a SURPRISE project for your child to complete! It could be anything...painting, clay creation, weaving, or much more! All materials will be provided for students, and each class session will produce a special treasure (or gift to give!) for your student to bring home!

Who says you can’t play with your food? Come and create your edible masterpieces. Your child will learn how to create appetizers that are edible and part creative artwork. This is not a peanut/nut-free class. Please contact us with any food allergies your child may have.

Book Club With Mrs. Sebo: Meet Kaya | Grades 3 - 5

Book Club With Mrs. Sebo: Meet Felicity | Grades 3 - 5

Come explore the world of American Girl; Kaya, a young Native American girl growing up in 1764. Students will read the “Meet Kaya” chapter book, both on their own with some inclass read aloud. We will discuss the book and have a brief history lesson. Activities include making a dream catcher and feather necklace. Students will also make chocolate berry bark and enjoy the sweet treat.

Come explore the world of American Girl: Felicity, a spunky girl growing up in 1774 colonial Williamsburg. Students will read the “Meet Felicity” chapter book, both on their own with some in-class reading aloud. We will discuss the book and have a brief history lesson. Class activities will include, making beaded rings & whirlygigs. Enjoy a tea party with gingersnaps and colonial games.

Books will be loaned to the students and returned after the class.

Lancer Youth Wrestling Join our experienced Lancer Youth Wrestling coaches for a season of skill-building and fun. Our programs are designed for all ages and abilities. We encourage both boys and girls to participate. Fun fact – girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the United States!

Not sure if wrestling is a good fit for your child, no history of wrestling in your family, or not sure what wrestling is all about? **Try out a practice on January 2 or January 4 for FREE!

Spend a couple of days exploring a variety of art media in a fun environment designed specifically for middle school students.

Students will have the chance to explore their own personal creativity and visions through various projects.

Babysitting Clinic | Grades 5 & Up Instructor: Rebecca Paulson, Extension Educator, 4H Youth Development - Houston County Let us prepare you to be the best sitter in your neighborhood. Through hands-on experience and role plays, we will cover age-appropriate toys, making babysitting kits, good business practices, basic first aid, safe cooking, safety and emergency action, and parent expectations. ACT Prep Workshop | Grades 9-12 | Instructor: Dr. Milt Dehn This 6-hour workshop emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques for each of the five ACT subject tests. The workshop blends the ACT facts and essentials, plenty of hands-on practice, and testtaking strategies that make sense to students. Learn specific methods to improve your scores and help take the butterflies out of the ACT exam. For an additional $20, students have the option of purchasing the Barron's ACT book that includes test-taking strategies and math and English review sections along with four practice tests. The registration deadline is Monday, January 15th.

Make a Hand Knit Blanket

Jesmonite Workshop with Jess Instructor: Jess Halverson Join Jess the owner of Stone and Earth for an educational workshop with Jesmonite. In this workshop you will learn the versatility and sustainability of jesmonite. Jess will show you step-by-step how to combined gypsum composite with a water based acrylic resin to create your very own trinket tray. You will also have the option to choose what color your masterpiece will be. At the end of class Jess will collect all the projects to take and sand and seal them. You can pick up your trays on January 15th at the District office.

Dished Up: Meal Prep Workshop with Danielle Martell This workshop is for you if: You care deeply about your family, BUT struggle to plan, shop and prepare meals on a nightly basis.

Even with a drawer full of recipes, you end up making the same 5 over and over again.

You have been known to stop at the local gas station or order pizza, when in fact, you have lots of food in the pantry, but just don't have time or energy to cook it!

With this workshop you will: Create healthy recipes you simply heat up that your family will enjoy!

Take home re-creatable recipes that you can try in the comfort of your home or even share with friends and family!

Meet others like yourself who are busy, but care deeply about making sure their kids are fed nutritious and delicious meals!

Planning For The End

Have your spouse/significant other and you talked about your passing? Have you talked to your children, parents, grandparents or other significant people about your passing? Have they talked to you?

What have you considered in your Wills? Trusts? Beneficiary designations? Is your home safe to live in now?

How about 10- 20 years from now? Do you have/need insurance? Annuities? Do you have a Power of Attorney (POA)? An advanced directive? What do you know about assisted living needs and facilities?

Come and participate in a preview of the process of Planning for the End. Couples are strongly encouraged to attend together. If appropriate, you might include other family.

This program is a 10 part series offered via Zoom. Each Thursday features a guest presenter(s) and cover a different topic within the scope of planning for the end. (Are you interested in participating, but are uncomfortable using Zoom? Call us at 895-5150 and we can help coach you on Zoom basics!)

The goals of this 10 session series are: To prepare individuals, couples and families for an individual’s ultimate passing.

To help you to initiate a planning process.

To encourage you to review any existing plans.

Snowshoe Rental for Youth and Adults Community Education has snowshoes in both youth and adult sizes available for rent to district families on the weekends for $5 per pair! The snowshoes were purchased through the efforts of Houston County Public Health and a Minnesota SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) Grant.

Snowshoes, including (optional) poles, will be available for rent for $5 per pair (plus a refundable deposit) at the Community Education Office, 703 South 11th Street, La Crescent, MN on Fridays, 9 am to 4 pm, throughout the winter months.

Snowshoes must be returned on Monday by 9:30 am. Call the CE office at 895-5150 to reserve your pair or to inquire about group rental!

Trips and Travel Opportunities The General Store of Minnetonka and Autumn at the Arboretum

The General Store of Minnetonka is a Minnesota gift store destination that you’ll just have to see to believe. Come and enjoy an incredible shopping experience of more than 15,000 square feet of an unparalleled selection of home décor, special gifts and old time classics.

After shopping we will travel to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. We will enjoy a Flower Pot Boxed Lunch. Lunch is served in a souvenir flower pot with seeds that you can take home as a gift from the Arboretum. After lunch, you will have time on your own to explore the Arboretum. Check out the pumpkin tree, featuring hundreds of pumpkins, gourds and squash grown at the Arboretum’s Horticultural Research Center. Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (6th Grade and Up) Learn to save a life! Learn critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Based on the course you select, students learn skills such as how to perform high-quality CPR, use an AED, and how to recognize and respond to various types of illnesses and injuries. Course Curriculum follows the 2020 AHA Guidelines. CPR face masks will be available for purchase if you would like one.

The La Crescent Fire Department is offering a blended learning class in which you will complete the online content of your desired class on your own time with the need to only come in to perform hands-on skills on the day of class. Radon Basics & Kit Pick -UP

Instructor: Houston County Public Health Educator Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless gas that is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but when trapped in buildings, can be harmful at elevated levels. It is present at elevated levels in about 35% of Minnesota homes. Radon levels should be tested in both new and older homes every couple of years. The first 15-minutes of this session will include some basic information on radon, testing your home, and mitigation; while the last 30-minutes will be a time for individuals to stop and pick up a radon kit. Individuals will complete a short form before picking up their kit and the cost of the kit is $10.

Basic Firearms and Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun Training This is a one-day basic course for men and women with little or no experience with firearms, as well as for more experienced shooters. Included are explanations of ammunition function and nomenclature, differences in various types of handguns, legal aspects of acquiring, possessing and using firearms, and the practical application of use of force laws in self-protection situations. Also included are many entertaining, real-world examples and stories. Emphasis is always on SAFETY. Completion of this course fulfills the training requirements for a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Handgun, honored in twenty-seven states. It also fulfills the training requirement for Wisconsin and Iowa Permits, and for a Florida permit honored in an additional seven states.

The live fire shooting exercise includes one-on-one coaching. Handguns and ammunition are provided, as well as ear and eye protection. An enclosed, heated shelter is provided for shooting in inclement weather. Students may wish to pack a lunch.

Tai Chi - Building a Strong and Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit!

Instructor: Tom Diana Tai Chi is a gentle Chinese art that has been practiced for about 1,000 years. It is an exercise in that it improves lower body strength, bone density, blood circulation, and balance; it also reduces blood pressure. Modern studies have shown that it helps relieve anxiety and depression. Since it is a lowimpact activity, it can be practiced well into one’s later years.

Participants will learn a basic five-element chi-gong exercise and immediately engage in some walking exercises. A Tai Chi form will also be taught. Come join in “meditation in motion” art and exercise.

Driftless Drifters Hiking Club

Join our friendly hikers for year-round adventures out in nature. Our region has many hidden gems to explore in all seasons and we want to show you the way. Trails will be in La Crescent, La Crosse and in the surrounding Driftless area. Hiking locations are announced a few days before each hike via email newsletter along with hiking tips and news. We will take the time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings and learn from each other as we spot flora, fauna and fungi on the trails, so bring your camera and a sense of adventure. Your annual dues give you access to Driftless Drifter regular weekly and monthly hikes listed below. Be sure to have sturdy shoes/boots, weather-appropriate clothing, bug spray and water.

Tuesday Morning Hikes - Tuesdays, 8:30 am (mid March-Nov); 10:30 am (mid Nov-Mar). Hikes of 5 miles or less in length and usually 1.5-2.5 hours long* with a variety of terrain including flatter trails to moderate inclines with steeper elevations up to 500 feet while hiking bluffs (may include some rock scrambling). You choose the hikes that best fit your skills!

Thursday Morning Ambles - Thursdays 8:30 am. (winter start time:10:30 am).- 1.5 hours long*, under 2.5 mile walks on flatter, sometimes paved, grassy or dirt trails at an easy pace to accommodate those who want to enjoy a more mellow, slower nature experience. *Drive-time to/from trailhead not included in hiking time estimates

If you cancel with less than 3 days notice, you will be issued a refund, minus a $5.00 processing fee and any costs incurred (supplies, food etc.).

Scholarships Scholarships are available to students who qualify for the school district free and reduced lunch program. We offer a 75% reduction for those who qualify for free lunch and a 50% reduction for anyone qualifying for the reduced lunch program.

There are some exceptions to this policy. Contact our office with your questions.

UCare Members of UCare Minnesota may take up to $15 discount per class on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors are eligible for three $15 reimbursements per calendar year. Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Include UCare ID number when registering. If you have any questions about the eligibility of specific classes, call (507) 895-5150.
