District News La Crescent-Hokah Families and Community, I am very excited to serve the students, staff, families, and community as your Superintendent of Schools. I’ve worked in public education for the past 33 years and am looking forward to our collaboration.

My career started as a Mathematics teacher and coach of many different sports. I worked in these roles for 19 years. I have served on the administrative side of education for the past 14 years as a Dean of Students, Associate Principal and Principal with some other supervisory duties as assigned. I loved my time in the classroom and in the co-curricular world and still vividly remember what it felt like to stand in front of the students and athletes and work with them to help achieve their goals and dreams.

While I do believe it is essential to teach the foundations of education (reading, writing, math, and communication), I also believe in educating the whole child. When students walk out of our doors I want them to be effective and ethical contributors to our society and prepared for whatever goals and dreams they choose to pursue.

When I have free time, I love to read, watch movies (or series), play cards and keep up with friendships. While my competitive days of athletics are behind me, I enjoy horseshoes, bocce ball, cornhole, campfires, and playing golf. But what I enjoy the most is spending time with my family!

My time with them is what I most cherish so I understand the importance of working with your students who I am sure you also cherish so much.

Early Childhood Family Education Littles at the Library

Time to Connect | Ages 0-5

Licensed Parent Educator, Karn Schwartzhoff, will be in the children’s area of the library with blocks, stuffies, gear boards, and lots of books. Littles at the Library is time for play, informal conversation, and getting our youngest community members comfortable and familiar with our wonderful library.

Join us Friday mornings to connect with your children and other families through song, play, projects, and learning. Following 45 minutes of open play and a short circle time, children stay with early childhood staff and parents go to a separate room to enjoy learning and conversation centered on parenting topics of the group’s choice. A light snack is included for children.

Early Childhood Screening Early Childhood Screening supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes cognitive and social emotional health and development. During screening, we observe your child’s vision and hearing, height and weight, large and small muscles, thinking, language skills, and social and emotional development. The entire appointment takes less than an hour.

Early Childhood Screening is required for entrance into kindergarten in MN Public Schools.

Monster Mash – A Silly Monster Painting Class Grades K - 4

Who says you can’t play with your food? Come and create your edible masterpieces. Your child will learn how to create appetizers that are edible and part creative artwork. This is not a peanut/nut-free class. Please contact us with any food allergies your child may have.

Get ready to giggle, splash some paint, and bring silly monsters to life! In this playful and imaginative kids' painting class, young artists will be guided stepby-step as we create a colorful cast of goofy, one-eyed, tentacled, toothy, and wacky little monsters—just in time for the “Monster Mash”! Greenhorn

Join our experienced Lancer Youth Wrestling coaches for a season of skill-building and fun. Our programs are designed for all ages and abilities. We encourage both boys and girls to participate. Fun fact – girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the United States!

Youth Programs Claymation | Grades 5 - 8 Instructor: Bernie Windschitl Using soft, easy to mold clay and imagination, students will create fun characters of a story. By the end of class we will bring the characters to life as we film a short animated clip using an IPad and stop-motion technology. This class is a great way to integrate art, technology, and storytelling in a fun, hands-on team project.

ACT Prep Workshop | Grades 9-12 | Instructor: Dr. Milt Dehn This 6-hour workshop emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques for each of the five ACT subject tests. Crocheting 101 Instructor: Rhoda Dobeck Come learn to crochet! This beginner’s class will provide you with the basic knowledge to start making fun projects. This class will provide a size I hook, steel yarn needle and a skein of cotton yarn so you can make your very own dishcloth!

This class will go over chains, single crochet, double crochet, and turning your project. Class will be 90 minutes with a 90 minute follow up class to give you time to work on your project and ask more questions.

Homemade Lefse With Dave Glomstad Just in time for the holiday baking season, join us as we learn how to make Lefse! We’ll start with ingredients, tools, and preparation required and then move in the rolling and baking process.

Each participant will have the opportunity to roll and bake their own and we’ll wrap up with cooling, packaging and storing of Lefse. Everyone will take some lefse and the recipe home with them. We’ll also do some tasting. All ingredients and equipment will be provided. We will be working with flour, so an apron is suggested(bring your own). Roll up your sleeves and register today!

A Christmas Carol at the Sidekick Theater A wonderful fresh look at the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghostly visits he received on Christmas Eve, the new musical rendition of the beloved Christmas tale is sure to provide memorable experience. Featuring some of the most talented performers and musicians in the Twin Cities, this magical product blends music, storytelling, humor and joyous holiday spirit.

Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (6th Grade and Up) Learn to save a life! Learn critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Based on the course you select, students learn skills such as how to perform high-quality CPR, use an AED, and how to recognize and respond to various types of illnesses and injuries. Course Curriculum follows the 2020 AHA Guidelines. CPR face masks will be available for purchase if you would like one.

The La Crescent Fire Department is offering a blended learning class in which you will complete the online content of your desired class on your own time with the need to only come in to perform hands-on skills on the day of class. You will receive online instructions after signing up for the class. Plan for a few hours to complete the online content before the scheduled hands-on class. Basic Firearms and Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun Training This is a one-day basic course for men and women with little or no experience with firearms, as well as for more experienced shooters. Included are explanations of ammunition function and nomenclature, differences in various types of handguns, legal aspects of acquiring, possessing, and using firearms, and the practical application of use of force laws in self-protection situations. Also included are many entertaining, real-world examples and stories. Emphasis is always on SAFETY. Completion of this course fulfills the training requirements for a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Handgun, honored in thirty-four states. Minimum age to obtain a Minnesota Permit is 18. It also fulfills the training requirement for Wisconsin and Iowa Permits, and for a Florida permit honored in an additional six states.

The live fire shooting exercise includes one-on-one coaching. Handguns and ammunition are provided for those that don’t have their own, as well as ear and eye protection. An enclosed, heated shelter is provided for shooting in inclement weather. Students may wish to pack a lunch.

Healthy Steps Program Join your friends and neighbors in a safe, warm, dry environment to walk during the school year.

The high school corridors are open for indoor walking and jogging every day that school is in session from November 1, 2024 through April 1, 2025.

No fee is charged for Healthy Steps, Participants need to register at the Community Education Office to receive their ID card and Healthy Tips handout.

SNAVL: Sunday Night Adult Volleyball League Sunday Night Adult Volleyball League is a great way to have fun,and meet new people. Gather your own team and come together to enjoy this great recreational league sport. Team captains need to submit the names, addresses and phone numbers of all their recreational team members. Full team payment is required at the time of registration.

Registration deadline is Sunday, September 28. All teams must be registered at that time in order to get the schedule made and announced to team captains. There are no referees.

Tai Chi - Building a Strong and Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit!

Instructor: Tom Diana Tai Chi is a gentle Chinese art that has been practiced for about 1,000 years. It is an exercise in that it improves lower body strength, bone density, blood circulation, and balance; it also reduces blood pressure. Modern studies have shown that it helps relieve anxiety and depression. Since it is a low-impact activity, it can be practiced well into one’s later years.

Participants will learn a basic five-element chi-gong exercise and immediately engage in some walking exercises. A Tai Chi form will also be taught. Come join in “meditation in motion” art and exercise.

This class uses modifications for those less flexible to derive the benefits of Yoga practice while seated and standing. This class will move your whole body through a complete series of movements designed to increase your flexibility, balance, strength, and range of motion. Driftless Drifters Hiking Club Join our friendly hikers for year-round adventures out in nature. Our region has many hidden gems to explore in all seasons and we want to show you the way. Trails will be in La Crescent, La Crosse and in the surrounding Driftless area. Hiking locations are announced a few days

before each hike via email newsletter along with hiking tips and news. We will take the time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings and learn from each other as we spot flora, fauna and fungi on the trails. Your annual dues give you access to Driftless Drifter regular weekly and special bonus hikes scheduled at other times throughout the year. Be sure to have good footgear and weather-appropriate clothing.

Tuesday Morning Hikes: Tuesdays, 8:30 am (March-December). Hikes of 5 miles or less in length and usually 1.5-2.5 hours long with a variety of terrain including flatter trails to moderate inclines with steeper elevations up to 500 feet while hiking bluffs (may include some rock scrambling). You choose the hikes that best fit your skills!

Rambles: Wednesdays, approximately once a month. 5-10 miles in length. Scheduled when leaders are available. Watch email for times and locations.

Ambles - Fridays, 8:30 am (March-December), 10:30 am (January-February), 2 to 4 miles in length on flatter, sometimes paved, grassy or dirt trails at an easy pace.

Winter Adventure Awaits – Rent Snowshoes for Just $5!

Looking to explore the great outdoors this winter? Community Education is offering affordable snowshoe rentals for district families, with both youth and adult sizes available! Thanks to the support of Houston County Public Health and a Minnesota SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) Grant, you can rent a pair of snowshoes (including optional poles) for only $5 per pair, plus a refundable deposit.

If you cancel with less than 3 days notice, you will be issued a refund, minus a $5.00 processing fee and any costs incurred (supplies, food etc.).

Scholarships Scholarships are available to students who qualify for the school district free and reduced lunch program. We offer a 75% reduction for those who qualify for free lunch and a 50% reduction for anyone qualifying for the reduced lunch program.

There are some exceptions to this policy. Contact our office with your questions.

UCare Members of UCare Minnesota may take up to $15 discount per class on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors are eligible for three $15 reimbursements per calendar year. Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Include UCare ID number when registering. If you have any questions about the eligibility of specific classes, call 507-895-4484 and press 5.
