Explore your musical side with our Community Choir: Songs For Your Soul or our Community Summer Band. Make a splash by joining our Adult H2O Fitness classes or our Parent Tot Swimming classes at the Aquatic Center. And don’t forget to round up all of the bike riders in your household for the Bike Rodeo on Saturday, June 1!

A HUGE thank you to Mr. Carl Ekern for his long time dedication to offering fantastic summer programs with Community Education.

He is “retiring” from teaching summer programs this year. He has been offering summer classes since my first summer in the district - 2013! It all started with “Fishing Fridays” and graduated to Fishing Camp and Archery for middle schoolers, “Let’s Get Movin’” for early childhood and elementary students, and the “Explore The Driftless Camp” for entering grades 3-5.

Thank you, Carl, for sharing your time and talents with our community’s kiddos these past 11 summers!

10 Guidelines for Effective Communication If you have a question or concern, start with the point of contact that would have the most information. This is referred to as “going to the source.”

If communication from the the source was not satisfactory, then follow the chain of communication.

Contact a direct supervisor of your initial point of contact.

Be respectful and civil.

When you use swearing and name-calling, you lose credibility. Avoid profanity and blaming.

Seek to understand all sides of an issue and be empathetic to others.

Resist spreading rumors that you do not know to be true.

This is dangerous on many levels.

Run the information you receive through a filter and get the full story before jumping to conclusions.

Assume positive intent and seek further details from the source.

Avoid social media when airing a grievance or concern.

Feelings and emotions are temporary, but your online footprint is permanent.

Guard the reputation of your community as closely as you do your own.

Help others remember the guidelines.

Trips and Travel Opportunities Field of Dreams Experience, Dyersville Iowa Join us on a journey to Dyersville, Iowa for an unforgettable experience at the Field of Dreams!

First, we'll embark on a tour of the "If You Build It" exhibit, located in downtown Dyersville, where you can explore the behind-the-scenes magic of the movie and learn about its impact on popular culture. Next, you will board the bus and head to the iconic baseball diamond where "If you build it, they will come." was born. Be Prepared

Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (6th Grade and Up) Learn to save a life! Learn critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Based on the course you select, students learn skills such as how to perform high-quality CPR, use an AED, and how to recognize and respond to various types of illnesses and injuries. Course Curriculum follows the 2020 AHA Guidelines. CPR face masks will be available for purchase if you would like one.

The La Crescent Fire Department is offering a blended learning class in which you will complete the online content of your desired class on your own time with the need to only come in to perform hands-on skills on the day of class. You will receive online instructions after signing up for the class. Plan for a few hours to complete the online content before the scheduled hands-on class. You will need to show proof of online completion at the time of the hands-on class (a screenshot or print certificate is acceptable)

55+ Driver Improvement Program (Defensive Driving) Instructor:Deanne Von Wald The Driver Improvement course is a state approved accident prevention/insurance discount course that is open to the public; preregistration is required. A MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor teaches this class. By utilizing the most up-to-date research in the field, participants will be provided the latest information in regards to driver and traffic safety, new laws, and vehicle technology. This class has something for everyone! Persons age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. This four-hour course is available to participants who have taken the eighthour Defensive Driving Course within the last three years and need to renew their insurance certification. Registration is required, Registration deadline is 1 week prior to the start of each class.

Be Prepared Basic Firearms and Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun Training This is a one-day basic course for men and women with little or no experience with firearms, as well as for more experienced shooters. Included are explanations of ammunition function and nomenclature, differences in various types of handguns, legal aspects of acquiring, possessing and using firearms, and the practical application of use of force laws in self-protection situations. Also included are many entertaining, real-world examples and stories. Emphasis is always on SAFETY. Completion of this course fulfills the training requirements for a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Handgun, honored in twenty-seven states. It also fulfills the training requirement for Wisconsin and Iowa Permits, and for a Florida permit honored in an additional seven states.

The live fire shooting exercise includes one-on-one coaching. Handguns and ammunition are provided, as well as ear and eye protection. An enclosed, heated shelter is provided for shooting in inclement weather.

Students may wish to pack a lunch.

Family Health & Carseat Education Family Health has lots of programs! Join us on June 21st from 9-10:30 in partnership with the La Crescent ECFE. We will be talking about our child and teen check-up program, follow- along and family home visiting, help me grow, and birth to three! We will finish up with car seat education. Community Choir: Songs For Your Soul

Community Summer Band, under the direction of Viva Graff, is open to anyone who plays any concert band instrument. Youth entering grades 8 and older are welcome to be part of the group – it’s intergenerational!

Online Culinary with Kristin Madus Kristin Madus is a champion of cookware who enjoys teaching Instant Pot/air fryer classes from her kitchen with 3 dogs underfoot, Kirsten spends her days creating beautiful food and helping fight food insecurity at Chowgirls Catering. She has been eating with local intention and sharing how to make the most of the farm share via her website Farm Fresh Feasts for more than 10 years.

1 Instant Pot - 1 Sheet Pan - 1 Skillet Meals Simplify supper with one pot cooking! Using a sheet pan OR a skillet OR a pressure cooker to make a complete meal saves time and energy. Join Kirsten online in her kitchen as she demonstrates Skillet Gnocchi with Sausage and Peas, Sheet Pan Quesadillas or Pesce Primavera, and pressure cooker Beef Stroganoff Soup or Curried Wild Rice Soup for Two. Wildcrafting Edible Weeds: Foraging Tour with Grandma Sunshine Join Grandma Sunshine, your community herbalist, for a foraging class and herbal medicine walk which will give you the knowledge and skills to gather wild plants safely and sustainably. You’ll learn how and when to harvest herbs to support your health and different ways to prepare the herbs. You’ll leave the class meeting some plants in the wild that you will not be able to unrecognize!

Learning to forage for food and medicine will empower you to care for your own body, in deep connection with the natural world. There are many wild herbs that are ready and ripe for harvest in every season. This is a perfect time of year to meet many of our plant allies. Late spring/early summer offers the greatest diversity of finding and harvesting herbal medicine.

Location will be in the LaCrescent area and exact location will be shared closer to the class date.

Driftless Drifters Hiking Club Join our friendly hikers for year-round adventures out in nature. Our region has many hidden gems to explore in all seasons and we want to show you the way. Trails will be in La Crescent, La Crosse and in the surrounding Driftless area. Hiking locations are announced a few days before each hike via email newsletter along with hiking tips and news. We will take the time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings and learn from each other as we spot flora, fauna and fungi on the trails. Your annual dues give you access to Driftless Drifter regular weekly and special bonus hikes scheduled at other times throughout the year. Be sure to have good footgear and weather-appropriate clothing.

Tuesday Morning Hikes: Tuesdays, 8:30 am (March-December). Hikes of 5 miles or less in length and usually 1.5-2.5 hours long with a variety of terrain including flatter trails to moderate inclines with steeper elevations up to 500 feet while hiking bluffs (may include some rock scrambling). You choose the hikes that best fit your skills!

Friday Morning Ambles: Ambles will resume in May and go through September. Fridays, 8:30 a.m.- 1.5 hours long, under 2.5 mile walks on flatter, sometimes paved, grassy or dirt trails at an easy pace to accommodate those who want to enjoy a more mellow, slower nature experience.

Rambles will be starting up soon. Rambles will be hikes 5-7 miles in length and will be done once a month on a Wednesday.

Fit n' Fun H20 Fitness: Water Aerobics for Adults Dive right into our aqua classes! Water exercise is a fun way to boost your cardiovascular health and strength. It is also a great way to work on flexibility. The water’s buoyancy and resistance allow you to exercise in a low-impact environment. Water exercise can be an excellent form of exercise for individuals who have back pain, arthritis, and diabetes. Tai Chi - Building a Strong and Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit!

Instructor: Tom Diana

Tai Chi is a gentle Chinese art that has been practiced for about 1,000 years. It is an exercise in that it improves lower body strength, bone density, blood circulation, and balance; it also reduces blood pressure. Modern studies have shown that it helps relieve anxiety and depression. Since it is a lowimpact activity, it can be practiced well into one’s later years.

Participants will learn a basic five-element chi-gong exercise and immediately engage in some walking exercises. A Tai Chi form will also be taught. Come join in “meditation in motion” art and exercise.

All Electric, Solar Shingle, Amish Built, Forever Home!

Interested in saving energy, building a new home or remodeling an existing home? Joe Deden, founding director of Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center, and his wife Mary Bell have reduced their energy costs in remodeling their previous home by 78%! They then took what they learned and designed and built an all electric home complete with solar shingles, a backup battery, and an air to water heat pump. Their home has been featured in Root River Currents, an online newsletter (https://rootrivercurrent.org/). Other conservation measures include short grass, prairie pollinator prairies, a large rain garden and water conservation raised bed, wicking bed gardens. They have a wealth of anecdotal stories about getting all these high tech systems to work together.

Whether you want to build new or remodel your home, they have useful and helpful information that you will find informative! They will offer a tour of their home later this summer/fall for those who attend and want to know more!

Girls & Boys Grades K-6 Head football coach Terry Donovan, his staff, and the high school Lancer players will lead this exciting opportunity to get ready for FOOTBALL! The camp provides a great experience for kids to practice skills and play a variety of games and activities all while having fun! La Crescent- Hokah Community Education and Appleseed Community Theater Present:

Camp Kids On Stage!

A dynamic youth program to introduce our youngest community members to the world of theater!

Community Education and Appleseed Community Theater have teamed up once again to bring this unique experience to kinds ranging in age from entering first grade though entering ninth grade.

This Summer, participants will present the musical School House Rock!

Students will participate in a three week immersion program learning both basics of theatre, common terminology, and will get started with learning about the production.

Next, students will learn about the audition process, and then will audition for their parts in the show. Class time will then focus more specifically on learning the script as well as the music.

Students will be divided into smaller groups by age. Students will meet daily for rehearsals from 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

A team from Appleseed Community Theatre, high school theatre students, musicians, choreographers, Community Education staff and more will all be assisting with this program!

All students will receive a Camp Kids on Stage T-shirt, their own script book, two show tickets, a DVD of the show and online access to professional photo gallery! **This year, daily rehearsals will be at the Elementary School Mezzanine and classrooms, due to ongoing HVAC work at the Secondary School. Location of performances will be announced in August, based upon HVAC project progress.

Explore the Driftless Outdoor Adventure Camp 2024 Grades 3-5 Experience our area in a new, adventurous way! Maseray Bangura will lead four outdoor adventures during this camp. Camp Decorah Outdoor Adventure Youth Day Camp In La Crescent!

Boys and Girls in Grades 1-5 Girls and boys entering grades 1-5 are invited to join the Camp Decorah staff for the outdoor adventure camp on Thursday, August 1st at the La Crescent- Hokah Elementary school! Camp Decorah is a fully accredited Scout Summer camp located near Holmen, Wisconsin.

Activities for registered youth Grades 1 & 2 will include: Archery, nature craft, field games and more.

Activities for grades 3-5 will include: Archery, First Aid, Knot Tying, team building & program solving games. Students should bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.

Registration Information We encourage early registration and payment is needed with registration. Register early to prevent class cancellation. This can easily be accomplished in the following ways: Online: Scan the QR code to take you to the registration page..

By Mail: Mail registration form with check payable to ISD 300 or VISA/Mastercard information to Community Education, 703 So. 11th Street, La Crescent, MN 55947

By Phone: Call 895-5150 to register by phone using your VISA/Mastercard. Phone registrations are taken Monday – Friday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm, following the school calendar.

Office hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays. The office is closed on non-school days. Cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and are all accepted when you pay in person.

Cancellation Policy We realize that schedules are busy, but your early registration assures that your class is a “Go.” Class Cancellation Policy and Refunds Prior to Start Date: Class cancellation must be made a minimum of 3 working days prior to the class start date for a FULL REFUND (unless otherwise noted).

If you cancel with less than 3 days notice, you will be issued a refund, minus a $5.00 processing fee and any costs incurred (supplies, food etc.).

If you do not notify Community Education prior to start of the class that you will not be attending, you will not be issued a refund.

Substitutes If you are unable to attend the class, event or trip that you registered for, please call us at 895-5150.

We may have a waiting list, so please do not find your own substitutes.

Scholarships Scholarships are available to students who qualify for the school district free and reduced lunch program. We offer a 75% reduction for those who qualify for free lunch and a 50% reduction for anyone qualifying for the reduced lunch program.

There are some exceptions to this policy. Contact our office with your questions.

UCare Members of UCare Minnesota may take up to $15 discount per class on most classes in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors are eligible for three $15 reimbursements per calendar year.

Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Include UCare ID number when registering. If you have any questions about the eligibility of specific classes, call (507) 895-5150.

By registering for a program, I understand that every effort will be made to protect and safeguard all students. I agree not to hold La Crescent-Hokah School District/ ISD 300 liable for any illness or mishap from any cause whatsoever. I also give the instructors/supervisors full authority in dealing with the problems of discipline. I understand that any student disregarding rules is subject to being sent home. I understand that any student who willfully destroys property will be held responsible and charged accordingly.

I give ISD 300 permission to use comments, photos and video of the registered participant(s) in its promotional materials.
