• Experience in complex budgetary and audit processes, including financial reporting; experience related to effective organization and personnel management, and related administrative processes.

• In-depth knowledge of finance with special emphasis on planning, long-term revenue forecasting, grants, accounting controls, and budgeting. Ability to lead a diverse group of professionals with a variety of educational and functional backgrounds. Certified Public Accountant designation preferred. Strong (oral and written) communications skills; planning and evaluation required.

Supports, monitors, tests and troubleshoots hardware and software issues pertaining to Windows Server, VMware, Linux, Mac and Sun UNIX server environment. Using standard operating procedure is responsible for varying levels of installation and configurations of servers, system software and data backups. Prioritizes and manages assigned work orders. Provides on-call support on nights and weekends as needed.

4 Texas Metro Areas Collectively Add More Than 400,000 People in the Last Year - Census Bureau Reports

F

our Texas metro areas together added more people last year than any state in the country except for Texas as a whole, according to new U.S. Census Bureau population estimates released today. The population in these four metro areas increased by more than 400,000 people from July 1, 2014, to July 1, 2015.

The Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land and Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington metro areas added about 159,000 and 145,000 residents, respectively — the largest gains of any metro areas in the nation. Two additional Texas metro areas adjacent to each other — Austin/ Round Rock & San Antonio/New Braunfels — were each also among the 16 nationwide to gain 50,000 or more people over the period. These four Texas metro areas collectively added about 412,000 people. Texas as a whole gained about 490,000.

The statistics released provide population estimates for our nation’s 381 metropolitan statistical areas, 536 micropolitan statistical areas and 3,142 counties.

Eight counties drove Texas’ metro area growth & were among the 20 counties nationwide that gained the most population between 2014 and 2015. Altogether, they added 306,736 people: • The Dallas metro area contained 4 of these counties: Tarrant, Dallas, Collin & Denton.

• The Houston metro area contained 2: Harris, which led the nation by gaining more than 90,000 people, & Fort Bend.

• Bexar, in the San Antonio metro area.

• Travis, in the Austin metro area.

Five Texas metros — Midland, Odessa, Austin, College Station-Bryan & Houston — were also among the 20 fastest growing between 2014 & 2015.

Houston, Austin and Orlando were the only three metro areas nationwide to be among both the 20 with the largest numeric gains & the 20 fastest growing (percentage gain) between 2014 & 2015. — MARCH 2016

Thanks to US Representative Tom Ball, Houston built the ship channel that stretches 50 miles to the Port of Houston. It was completed on September 7, 1914.

I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t ask a family member to be the executor of your will. What are your feelings about this?

I’m getting married this summer, and I’m on Baby Step 4 of your plan while starting to invest for the first time. My fiancé is getting onboard with your advice, and he’s currently in the process of paying down his student loan. Should I put my emergency fund money, minus $1,000, toward his student loan debt?

Joyce Dear Joyce, I don’t necessarily agree with this line of thinking. In my mind, a family member who is competent and has integrity can definitely be the executor. “Executor” just means they execute, thus the name. They’re going to execute the wishes of the will. If the family member has the business acumen and trustworthiness to execute the wishes and directives in a will, then that’s perfectly fine.

Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I’m really proud of you guys, too, for your mature behavior where money is concerned.

Just remember to use some common sense, too, when choosing an executor. If you have an extremely complicated estate, say 80 pieces of real estate with investments and everything, you probably don’t want your 22-year-old niece, nephew or grandchild who just graduated college in charge of things. I would advise choosing someone with a little more life experience, and maybe some success in the real world.

First, don’t pay anything of his until after the wedding and you two are home from your honeymoon. At that point, “mine” and “his” becomes “ours,” and you can realign your money situation to reflect your total money makeover as a couple. Make sure that “we” have an emergency fund of at least $1,000 in the bank at that point. Then, if you like, you can throw the rest of what you previously had in your emergency fund at the debt.

The people who say family shouldn’t do this are the same ones who say you shouldn’t have family in your business. You can have family in both. You just have to have good boundaries, clear roles, and honest, mature people. Make sure you give clear instructions and explanations for your decisions, too. Sit down with your family, explain who the executor’s going to be, and why, along with what the will says. It’s also not a bad idea to have an initial reading of the will while you’re still alive. This communicates your wishes personally and takes some of the pressure off of the executor.

You can both also pile up cash between now and the big day, so that after you two are official you’ll have even more cash on hand. Who knows, you might be able to knock out that student loan completely and begin your life together debt-free. That would be awesome!

Employment Matchmakers: Pairing People & Work Workers want jobs, and employers need workers.

Employment matchmakers help bring the two groups together. by Elka Torpey

elcome to the 21st-century workforce: It’s dynamic and productive—and constantly in flux.

“There are differences in the way we work now,” says Annette Summers, executive director of the Association of Career Professionals International. “People used to join a company and stay there for their entire careers.” Today, she says, both workers and employers expect change.

But that expectation doesn’t always mean change is easy. So, when switching jobs or finding new workers, many jobseekers and employers turn to professionals for help. And that creates opportunities for employment matchmakers.

Some matchmakers, such as career and vocational rehabilitation counselors, provide jobseekers with career guidance or job-hunting advice. Others, such as recruiters and human resources managers, help employers find workers. Such divisions aren’t always so clear, however, and some matchmakers assist both groups.

Help wanted: Employment advice Employment matchmakers who work with jobseekers give expert advice. Sometimes, their advice helps jobseekers find work.

Other times, it helps people decide on a career. Whatever the focus, the goal remains the same: matching the jobseeker to a job.

Employment advisors, who often work as counselors, are experts in using and providing career and labor-market information. They might show people how to find job postings, teach them about networking and about writing resumes and cover letters, or coach them on preparing for an interview. Advisors also help people develop a plan of action for their job search.

When giving career advice, these workers match a client’s interests and abilities to employment opportunities. To do this, they might talk with a client about previous work experience and education, likes and dislikes, and career goals. They also give assessment tests to reveal the client’s strengths, preferences, and possible career options.

Advisors help jobseekers in many ways. But their work also depends on collaboration with their clients. “I see so much opportunity and so much potential for people, but it’s up to them,” says outplacement specialist Jayne Mattson of Westborough, Massachusetts.

“My job is to try to instill in them some lifelong career management skills.”

CAREER COUNSELORS Career counselors strive to help people improve their well-being through work.

Some people, for example, might be unhappy in their current jobs. A career counselor assists these clients in identifying what about their occupations or workplaces clashes with their personalities—and what might be a better fit. Other clients have limited work experience and need help deciding on a career to pursue.

To give people a better understanding of work options, career counselors often apply career development theories and tools. For example, many counselors use occupational codes to divide personality types and work environments into six categories: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. After developing a personal profile of a client, a career counselor might suggest that he or she use the occupational categories to explore career possibilities.

Some people work in other fields before developing an interest in career counseling. A recruiting or human resources background can be especially beneficial.

VOCATIONAL REHAB COUNSELORS Vocational rehabilitation counselors work with jobseekers who have disabilities. This collaboration often involves first identifying clients’ impairments and then helping them through any challenges they may face in finding a job. These counselors understand how disabilities affect what people do for a living. Some vocational rehabilitation counselors specialize in working with a specific group of clients, such as those who have a traumatic brain injury or visual impairment.

These counselors might also work directly with employers or refer clients to job placement specialists, helping them to identify job opportunities and to place clients in jobs. When necessary, vocational rehabilitation counselors assist their clients in locating other resources, such as those providing medical care or housing.

And they frequently maintain contact with clients during job training, placement, and other assistance to ensure that the arrangements are appropriate.

OTHER EMPLOYMENT ADVISORS Matching workers to employment options doesn’t always require a degree in counseling. Employment advisors who provide career guidance have a variety of job titles and duties, including the following:

Recruiters, human resources managers, and employer liaisons are three occupations in which workers help employers with their planning and staff-search tasks. The specifics of what these workers do vary, but they each have a special role in ensuring that employers’ workforce needs are met.

Most employment matchmakers cite the diversity of the people they come into contact with as one of the best parts of their jobs. “I’m always talking with and meeting different people,” says business liaison Pat Richards of Sunnyvale, California. “That makes my job very interesting.”

But working with people can also bring frustration, because success often depends on the motivation of others. “It can be really challenging when people aren’t willing or able to do what needs to be done,” says outplacement specialist Jayne Mattson.

Employment matchmakers enjoy helping others, and their work often has an impact on people’s lives. Mattson, for example, assists workers who have been laid off, and she says, “It’s so wonderful watching people find out that there is life after the company they left. At the most difficult time, you help.”

Career counselor Sarah Wilson expresses similar job satisfaction.

“I enjoy feeling like I’m making a difference,”

she says, “and that I’ve helped someone to get a job he might not otherwise have gotten, or to consider occupations that he might not have thought of.”

Even those who don’t work directly for jobseekers still help them every day. “The best part for me is the fact that you’re selling opportunities,” says corporate recruiter Marie Artim of St. Louis, Missouri. “You’re helping someone to start her career. She’ll always look to you as the person who did that for her.”
