In order to win in life, your teen is going to need a solid plan for everything—including their money! If they learn to budget today, they can avoid some common money mistakes and start building a strong financial future ASAP. They might need a friendly push to get started, so here are a few things that will help get them motivated.

How to help your teen start budgeting By Anthony ONeal

WHY BUDGETING MATTERS Your teen is probably pumped to get a taste of the real world, whether that means getting their first job or getting out of your house and into a college dorm. But before they get too caught up in dreaming about their new freedom, they need to realize that freedom comes with responsibility. Trust me, I’ve been where they are now. When I first started living on my own, I didn’t have a clue about how to balance my income and expenses, much less how to think about long-term financial goals. Living without a plan got me in some serious trouble. Luckily, my dad saw what was happening and jumped in with some wisdom. He showed me exactly how to create a plan for my income and expenses. I know that for your teen, the thought of writing a regular budget sounds like as much fun as an all-nighter cramming for a calculus final. But becoming a budgeter was the best financial decision I ever made. Not only did budgeting take away a lot of stress, it also helped me move toward financial peace and achieve my dreams. HOW TO BUDGET Now that the why behind budgeting is clear, let’s jump into the how. Writing out a zero-based budget every month is your teen’s blueprint for financial success. Tell them not to get intimidated. A zero-based budget just means they’re creating a complete plan for all their spending ahead of time. It’s like they’re giving every dollar they earn a job to do. Here’s a simple budgeting plan you can give them: Step 1: Have them list all their income sources for the month. They should include paychecks from work or side jobs, plus any extra financial support they get from family. Add it all up. If your teen doesn’t have an income, and needs some extra cash this summer, I have a list of great summer jobs for them to check out at anthonyoneal.com. Step 2: Have them list every expense they’re going to have for the month. Here are some examples of what they might want to include: • • • • • • • •

School fees Rent (unless they live at home) Food (unless you still cook for them. Lucky them!) Clothing Gas Entertainment Savings Emergency fund/savings

Step 3: Have them total up their expenses, and subtract that number from their total income. Do they get zero? If they’ve got money left over, great! It can go into savings. If not, that just means they need to find a way to make more money or spend less money on some of their expenses. And that’s it! It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds. Here’s my last tip. Tell your teen not to get discouraged if every little thing doesn’t work as planned the first month. That’s totally normal. It might take a few months, but with your help they’ll work out the kinks over time. And as they do, I know they’re going to have the freedom and confidence to take on whatever’s coming their way!

Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey & on the web at daveramsey.com.

GETTING MOTIVATED

KIDS AND MONEY

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

My wife is so charged up after reading your books, and now she is determined to get us out of debt. I know this is good idea, but I just don’t have the passion for it she does. There are also some things I really don’t want to give up. Do you have some suggestions for getting motivated?

We’ve followed your advice and put our kids on commissions instead of allowances. The problem is our 8-year-old. He never buys anything, and he seems to be very frugal by nature. Do you have any advice for teaching him it is okay to spend money sometimes?

Ken Dear Ken, Goals and dreams always have a better chance of coming true if you have a written game plan. Sit down with your wife at the beginning of each month, and help her do a written budget. Give every dollar a name on paper before you spend anything. Contrary to popular belief, doing a budget is not torture. It’s also not just a math exercise. It’s an opportunity for you both to have input on what you want to accomplish in life and how to make it happen. After two people are married they become “as one.” And that’s how decisions should be made in a marriage—facing all the problems, dreams, and fears together. Once you sit down and do a budget, I think you’ll see where you can cut back and make things happen that you thought were impossible before. You may have to give up a few things for a little while, but when you see how quickly you can get ahead by making your money behave, I’ve got a feeling you’ll get excited about the possibilities!

Stephen Dear Stephen, You’re absolutely right for wanting to teach him wise spending habits. Each of us has the personality of being either a saver or a spender. As parents, we should help our kids grow in areas where they have weaknesses, and find ways to enhance their strengths. Give him praise for being such a good saver, but gently encourage him to spend a little, too. Spending is one of the rewards of work and disciplined saving. You might urge him to pick out something he really wants, and help him make a plan to save enough money to buy that item. Once he has enough money for the purchase, turn it into a celebration of reaching that goal. There are three things you can do with money—spend it, save it, and give it to others. Focusing too much, or too little, on any of these is not financially or spiritually healthy. —Dave

Heal Your Layoff Wounds With A Higher Paying Job By Robin Ryan, Career Counselor and Bestselling author of 60 Seconds & You’re Hired

If you are one of the 7,000 people, who are getting a notice from Ford saying that you are losing your job, instantly, your life was devastated. Ford noted that it was offering white-collar workers a voluntary buyout to about 1,500 people which is a fancy term for trying to encourage older workers - think Baby Boomers – to retire early. Losing a job is one of life's most stressful events. No matter how prepared you are or how much support family and friends give you, underneath your bravado is worry and self-doubt about your future. It's common to think, "I'll never get a job as good as I had" or, "This is awful -- I'll never make that kind of money again." You'll experience a myriad of thoughts and feelings, from anger and depression to loss and resolve. However, you can stage a rebound by landing a higher paying job in perhaps less time than you imagine. Current research shows that the average person who moves on to a new position is earning anywhere from 15 to 30% more than they were previously making. The economy is strong in most parts of the country and there are other opportunities out there. If you are working for Ford, you can try to look at some of the vendors who service the company or the other auto employers in your region. Keep in mind that some of the best positions may require you to leave the area and relocate someplace else that has plentiful jobs and is willing to pay you top salary to get you to take their position. SALARY-NEGOTIATION STRATEGIES There's an art to negotiating a new salary, particularly if you're unemployed. It may surprise jobless candidates, who feel they lack the leverage to bargain with employers. After working to help laid-off workers land new jobs for 25 years, I know a laid-off worker can be in a powerful position to negotiate. Your challenge is to be head and shoulders above

marketing himself for this position, he landed a new position at Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, Calif., that paid $20,000 more than his prior salary. You, too, may have acquired skills that move you on to a new level. An informal survey of more than 200 managers, executives and professionals attending a job-search skills seminar I gave a few weeks ago showed only one person knew what they could earn at another employer. Don't guess what you're worth -- know. Not being informed about your market rate when you talk with employers is a costly mistake. Know what you should be paid by researching at Payscale. com. This site offers free salary surveys to help you know HANDLE TRICKY SALARY QUESTIONS LIKE A PRO. To maintain an advantage during pay negotiations, don't disclose your former or current salary or what you hope to make. Many job candidates mishandle this point of the interview, and it costs them thousands of dollars. what you can expect to be paid. Also, conduct salary research by looking at professional associations, magazines, business and professional journals and Web sites for your desired job title or responsibility level and the corresponding range of pay. Also, ask colleagues and friends for input. Start with a nonthreatening question such as, "If I were to become the head of marketing for your firm, how much would I likely be paid?" You can vary your inquiry by saying, "Is expecting a salary of $100,000 too high, low or about right?" EXCEL IN INTERVIEW PREPARATION.

the competition. When you're clearly the No. 1 choice, even your initial offer will be strong, but the negotiated offer can be even stronger. It seems these days that employers first offer is not their best offer when it comes to compensation and benefits.A Fortune 500 company did exit polls of its employees who were laid off. The exit polls showed: •

80% of employees landed jobs that paid more, while only 9% ended up making less in new positions.

The most commonly cited salary increase was 30% to 40%. Some employees doubled their salaries.

Here are the tips my career clients have used to negotiate pay in their new positions. KNOW YOUR REAL VALUE. Start by finding out your real worth in the marketplace. You may worry that you were overpaid, only to learn you were underpaid. One Boeing software engineer who was laid off from his job at an Everett, Washington plant didn't know what his skills were worth in the marketplace. As we worked together, he learned his value in today's workplace. After VOL. 24 ISSUE 1201

Besides researching the prospective employer and hiring manager, be ready for interview questions that ask you to describe your past performance on the basis that it's the best predictor of your future performance. Go to Glassdoor.com to uncover some of the interview questions the employer has been asking. To become the No. 1 choice, you need to prepare answers that share examples of past successes and problem-solving in areas needed to excel at the new job. Networking with insiders will help you learn the company's needs and how the position fits them. This knowledge will help you convince interviewers you can successfully handle the job requirements. Be sure you stress your strengths and how they will support this new employer. Focus on sharing work stories that demonstrate how you use your skills on the job. Stories are most influential, and you need to prepare these in advance. Role-play answering questions to get comfortable and smooth. The best way to answer questions about your earnings is to deflect them by asking, "What's the salary range for this job?" If employers insist on knowing a salary figure, provide a range. I recommend you say, “According to Payscale.com the average salary for this position is $80,000 to $99,000 depending on the responsibilities, benefits and other factors, such as overtime, travel or relocation issues. I'm within that range." You haven't sold the employer yet, so focus on becoming the No. 1 choice before discussing pay details. A merger forced a chief financial officer (CFO) who had spent 10 years with a start-up that became a large healthcare organization to begin job hunting. She received several job offers, but her research indicated she should be paid more for her experience and skills. When she came to me for interviewing help, I found that the CFO had been telling prospective employers what she had earned in her previous job. Once she began handling the questions differently, she JULY 19, 2019

GENERAL sailed on to a significant raise making over $24,000 more, as CFO of a national health-care hospital chain. Remember, whoever mentions money first, loses. Even if the interviewer is persistent, continue to state a range of pay, adding that you need to know more about the job and its responsibilities to be more specific about your desired earnings. Another way to respond is to cite a survey source, saying, for instance, "American Marketing Association surveys indicate that a brand manager at my level of experience makes $95,000 to $130,000 and that's the range of pay I expect to be paid. You do pay competitive salaries here, don't you?" By asking this question, you'll get the interviewer to respond and move on. Your highest increases in pay will come after the employer decides they want to hire you. You can negotiate for perks such as extra vacation time, better medical coverage, a company-leased car, expense account, laptop computer, or cellular phone. For instance, it's possible to receive more vacation time by asking for it. A facilities manager for a federal planning office in Washington, D.C., accepted a voluntary layoff package. We worked together as he sought a new job. A large medical-research center offered him a position as director of engineering along with a market-rate salary, but only a week's vacation to start. The manager had received six weeks' vacation at his previous job and was concerned about taking only a week off because of the overtime and stress involved in the new position. By negotiating, he was able to increase his time off to 18 days during the first year. A big success strategy is to become knowledgeable about the company's medical insurance plan and whether it covers other family members. If you're leaving a company with a plan that provided 100% coverage for all family members with a low deductible and going to one with a less generous plan, ask to have your extra cost (which can run $5,000 to $10,000 annually) added to your base salary or paid. Another success tip is to ask for a signing bonus. Many companies will pay if asked. Typically these range from $5,000 - $20,000. Remember, cash is king in negotiations. Stock options are speculative and often take a long time to vest. So negotiate hard for cash up front and view any stock-option gains as icing on the cake. Determining the value of stock options isn't easy since their worth is based on the future value of the company. You' ll need to assess the three-to-five-year value of the company, performing due diligence on risk and potential up-and-down value. I've heard from too many employees who have counted on riches worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at one point, and yet when it can vest, it's only valued at less than one dollar a share. The most significant salary jumps almost always come from quitting a job and taking a new one. Examine your skills, abilities, and goals to determine if you've acquired highly marketable skills at a past employer. A layoff can be just the push you needed to advance your career and start earning more money.
