Wow it has been a windy few weeks, leaves blowing about everywhere and bridges being shut - it would also seem that it has blown in (and now hopefully out) some grumbly feelings.

Since the last edition I have been chastised twice about errors in the Bugle and how long I have taken to get back to someone.

Firstly I’d like to point out I’m a volunteer, I do this in my free time around my erratically houred job and equally erratic family.

If you see a mistake please do let me know, don’t complain it’s been there for 2 years and ask why I haven’t changed it! Add to that the many, many

complaints about dog fouling and parking it’s been an “exciting” few months!

Jean Lace mentions, in her last Over 60’s report as Secretary that reports will now arrive by email - which I am thankful for. It does however leave me a little nostalgic that there will no longer be a report, typed on a manual typewriter, arriving every other month. It takes me

back to my last year of high school when I learnt to type on one - complete with a teacher who would rap your knuckles with a wooden ruler if you looked down at the keyboard!

As always there is lots on within the village - to make sure your event isn’t missed the copy deadline for the next edition is 15th May at 12noon. All the contact and advertising details can be found inside the back page of each Bugle.

BUGLE NEWS & LETTERS Dog Fouling

I wrote a while ago in the bugle about the issue of dog fouling in the Village and had hoped that the owners of the dogs concerned would take heed and pick up their dogs faeces. Not a difficult task.

Sadly this is not happening and I would even go so far as to say that there has been an increase in the amount of faeces I am seeing around the Village.

I fear that if this irresponsible behaviour continues then at some stage, dogs will be banned from walking in certain places. This will affect all dog owners which will be grossly unfair to the largely responsible ones.

I am at a loss to understand the mentality of these owners just not being bothered to pick up their dogs faeces. It is giving all dog owners a bad name and this is unfair and unacceptable.

As I said before if these owners cannot be bothered to carry out this task and be responsible for their dogs then they should think seriously why they have an animal in the first place.

Are they having difficulty in understanding why they need to do this, in terms of health and safety?

Are they unable to sequence the task i.e. the need to carry bags, how to open a bag, etc then I am more than happy to help them understand and learn how to carry out this task. I am sure in this day and age there is a You 8

Can you say ‘Yes’ to ‘Noah’?

Noah’s Challenge is a chance to explore some of the beautiful countryside in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to our village, while also raising money for a worthy local cause. The event supports Ipswich Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Group registered charity 1163321, based at Bentley Riding School, which draws a number of its volunteers from Brantham.

The sponsored walk (or run if preferred) is on Saturday May 18 starting and finishing at The Ark in Cattawade.

Participants will then ‘collect all the animals’ by following a circular route of approximately 12 miles – mostly off road on public footpaths, although there are a few short road sections. Three pubs (all named after animals – The Bull, The Hare and Hounds and The Red Lion) will act as checkpoints where participants will have a card stamped showing they have collected that ‘animal’. At the end of the day all fully completed cards will be en-

tered into a prize draw.

All finishers will also receive a goody bag.

It’s intended to be a leisurely event and taking a break for coffee, lunch or other refreshment at the pubs is encouraged.

The furthest distance between checkpoints is approximately 4.5 miles (7km).

Entry is just £3 if you raise a minimum amount of sponsorship for Ipswich RDA Group (£20 for adults, £10 for children and £50 for families or teams of up to 6 people). Everyone who raises more than £30 in sponsorship will be eligible for a prize draw. If you also wish to support another charity through sponsorship this is fine once the minimum for Ipswich RDA has been achieved. Sponsorship forms and details of the

Parish Council News

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS APRIL/MAY 2019

As I write this Storm Gareth is continuing to create bad weather, disruption, and a general feeling that winter may never end! However, the days are starting to draw out so let’s hope that there is sunshine coming sometime soon! As if to encourage the sun along the daffodils planted by the local cub pack on the side of the A137 are looking really bright and beautiful at the moment thanks to the cub pack for all their work to brighten our village up! On to other village matters; there’s been a lot going on in Brantham over the last few months, and here are some updates to keep you in the loop….

Elections 2019

Every four years all parish councillors must retire and if they wish can see re-election to the Parish Council. The next full council elections take place on 2nd May 2019 and I look forward to introducing you to your new Parish Council in the next edition of the 12

Brantham Industrial Site

As many of you will have noticed activity is starting to ramp up around the Industrial Site and also around the Greenfield site. Since the last edition of the Bugle the planning application from Taylor Wimpey has been submitted to Babergh District Council, and comments from the Parish Council will have been submitted by the time this edition of the Bugle is published. The bungalows on Brooklands Road that stood on the access point to the proposed development have now been demolished in preparation for the works in that area, and a diversion is in place on Factory Lane to enable works to that road to take place. The Parish Council continue to maintain communication with St Francis Group representatives to ensure that we are kept in the loop and can give input where necessary, therefore if

Dog Fouling

Dog fouling continues to be a problem around the village which is highlighted to me on a regular basis by local people.

Dog mess is an eyesore and a health hazard. If you are a dog owner, you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog messes in a public place.

The only exemptions are: •If you are registered blind •If you are walking on land used for agriculture or woodlands and rural common Land Brantham is fortunate to have a high number of dog litter bins in the village, the Parish Council would like to ask dog owners to respect their fellow residents and use the bins provided.

Council about the number of cars parked on the side of Brooklands Road and the disruption that this is beginning to cause the bus route through the village.

The Parish Council have referred this matter on to Suffolk County Council Highways department for their assistance who are working with the local police to see how the issue can be addressed.

In the meantime however, if you regularly park along Brooklands Road please could you take this opportunity to consider whether, when parking, you have allowed sufficient space for other vehicles and particularly buses to make their way down the road.

Parish Council Contributions

Since the last edition of the Bugle the Parish Council has not received any requests for contributions from local groups.

Planning and Finance Committee meetings The Planning and Finance Committees meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month. The next Planning and Finance Committee meetings will take place on Wednesday 24 April & 22 May. Meetings start at 7.30pm at Brantham Village Hall and members of the public are welcome to attend. However, if no plans have been received during the month the Planning Committee will not meet so please check on the Parish Council notice board prior to the day of the meeting.

Parish Council meetings are normally held on the 1st Wednesday of every month starting at 7.30pm at Brantham Village Hall.

Brantham Over 60’s Club With regret, we record the recent death of Mrs Lily Whicher at the age of 100. A member since 2005 who will be greatly missed.

Never an easy start to a report, and due to by-dates events from mid January continue in this one. On 15th a talk and demo by Barbara Faulkner, A Bird In The Hand - all about fans - variety of construction (not always with feathers) and use in different countries. On 22nd a Fish and Chips lunch and afternoon quiz; ending the month with a A Year In A Suffolk Field and Chris Parfitt’s super photography on the 29th.

An entertaining hour of melodies from the 70s/80s and a bit of humour with duo Jenny & Chrissie on 12th Feb. The following week our bi monthly roast lunch at the Leisure Centre preceding an afternoon of board games and dominoes.

On 26th a well presented (with old pictures) film show and commentary by the speaker, David Whittle, about The Harwich Train Ferry Story - 1917-1987

proved of great interest to all present, being in our lifetime and see in operation by some. A surprise gentleman visitor, for one, who in his teens had actually worked as a dockhand on the pier at Harwich during the 1980’s. The boats - three in all used during the 70 years - were adapted with a 3 lane side by side track for transporting the various cargoes in trucks across the channel, these having been shunted along a track on the specially built new pier. A similar plan on the other side. Official opening of the Train Ferry Service by Prince George in April 1924 in Harwich and by Prince Leopold in Belgium. Anything on wheels could be shipped with this new roll on/roll off method (including tanks in wartime).

Over 60’s Contd.... the New World. He opened his hotel there in 1987 (the venue for the Whittle’s holiday), which had a very special garden - a botanist’s paradise. Once a week guests are offered a guided tour with a professional horticulturist following a list of 56 plants representing more than 300 species in the garden. The theme of this being In Three Hours Hours Around the World Without Leaving The Hotel. You

Part 2 of my commentary on the proposed estate to be built on the green fields of Brantham village.

I propose now to bring to your attention some of the legal issues I feel all residents should have knowledge of. I start with the rights of every householder to enter any adjoining or adjacent land for the purpose of carrying out ‘basic preservation works’ to one’s own property; examples being repair or painting of fencing. If the neighbour objects then there is a right to obtain a court order with all costs to be paid by the objector. See “The Access to Neighbouring land Act1992.”

Until 1960, all the land now owned by SFG which lies north of Factory Lane was owned and farmed by a Mr Owen Southgate who also owned the bungalow in Factory Lane. His grandson still owns the land which adjoins the site to the north between Hardy Close and Brooklands Road. Residents of Brantham have for many years been crossing this land to gain access to the site as is evidenced from the well-worn, path. As you enter the site it is clearly seen that the path splits into two, one goes to the left and then down to the bridleway and The Brantham

I have only lived in Brantham for 14 years so do not qualify to apply to have this path put on the definitive map; I can though testify that when I moved here people walked past my rear fence so frequently I erected a 6 feet high fence for privacy. They continued to do so until last year when the bulldozer of SFG destroyed the land by heaping up the top soil. I suggest all evidence of such use by the public could be collated by a volunteer, a Parish Councillor or a re-incarnated HOGS, and these long established rights of way could be preserved before SFG destroy all in pursuit of gross profit without thought or interest in the countryside.

Finally please do not put any trust in local government planning officers who act at all times without concern that their decisions may adversely impact on the residents of the village. Unless they live here they have no concern for you or your neighbours.

plaints about the failures of Babergh DC planning officers over the last 2 years. Not one matter has been correctly investigated and not one has been rectified.

What other authority in the UK would allow the creation of between 30 and 40 residential homes where the only way to dispose of sewage is to dump it into the public highway. At Pin Mill the River Orwell is owned entirely by The People of Ipswich by virtue of Royal grant by the King in 1518 and all citizens have a right to navigate the waters, as such it is a public highway.

However Babergh DC have planning authority over the foreshore at Pin Mill and the council have made provision for 28 houseboats to reside on the foreshore although they have no authority to do so in law. As a direct result the situation is that at Pin Mill, there are between 30 to 40 residential vessels sitting on the mud daily discharging sewage and foul water onto and into the mud of the foreshore with the result that each so called house boat is surrounded by it is own excrement and the excrement of up to 40 others.

What other Council would completely ignore and deny their responsibility for gross abuse of other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children,

Babergh DC have received a planning application from Taylor Wimpey for the greenfield site and have stated that comments have to be in by the 18th March, but the law allows people to comment up to the date of the planning meeting. In addition Strategic Housing have put a hold on the application so it could be sometime before the application is considered.

Most residents (i.e. those not backing onto the site) have not been informed of the application so there are at present few comments.

Good Neighbour Scheme

Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme The Good Neighbours have had some 197 requests for assistance from our residents since the beginning of this year and thanks to all our volunteers, these requests were completed satisfactorily. It must be said that this scheme runs with the goodwill of all our volunteers who give up their time to fulfil requests from our neighbours within this community and although we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually turn a request down we do sometimes remind callers that this scheme is there to assist residents in times of need such as travelling to GP or Out Patient appointments along with the odd job around the home to make safe a fallen fence panel or blown lightbulb etc. We should point out the service is not there for journeys to the theatre or sea side and we are not the fourth emergency service, therefore we can only provide assistance within the

scope of safety and individuals abilities and the good will that our volunteers can provide, therefore please treat the scheme in the spirit in which it is offered.

Having said all that, we do provide a good social event every month in the form of the Community CafĂŠ which is held on the last Thursday of each month at the Brantham Leisure Centre where residents of all ages are welcome and indeed if you were thinking of becoming one of our volunteers please come along and meet some of us where we can give you a good introduction to this great scheme.

Any funds raised at this event goes towards the mini bus that takes residents out on regular shopping trips and other events throughout the year along with helping to pay for some of the annual Christmas meals and afternoon tea events.

Well it’s been an interesting couple of months in the life of BAFC. Firstly, most of our Junior sides finish their seasons this month, a peculiarity of the leagues and number of teams in each league. Our Ladies who play on a Sunday afternoon recently lost to Ipswich Town Ladies in the Quarters of the Suffolk Cup, no disgrace there and they are still lying 3rd in their league. In fact, I don’t think they have ever been lower than 3rd for the last 3 seasons, they are a credit to the club and massive thanks to Luke and all the ladies.

BUGLE NEWS & LETTERS BUS ROUTE 92 VIA BROOKLANDS ROAD I took the 92 bus from Brooklands School to Manningtree on a Saturday at the end of February and on my return later in the day from Colchester Road (the 14.20), the driver informed me that he couldn’t take the bus through New Village and Brooklands Road because there were too many cars double parked on that route. He had phoned the bus depot and had permission from his boss to change his return route and use the A137.

He stopped on Brantham Hill, near Palfrey Heights, for me to get off and was very apologetic.

In conversation the driver told me that on the way down to Manningtree he had got part way down Brooklands Road but couldn’t get through. He had reversed up the road, turned the bus round and had no choice but to use the A137, bypassing the whole estate. He said he had been concerned that anyone waiting on the estate would have been left behind. Apparently this isn’t the first time bus drivers have had difficulty because of cars being double parked.

But what we don’t want to happen is for the Ipswich Bus Company to decide that it’s too much hassle for the drivers to negotiate Brooklands Road and we end up with the bus using the A137 and not coming round the estate.

There are local residents who use this service who would find it difficult to walk to the hill to use the bus. It is a lifeline to those who don’t drive - so please residents of Brooklands Road, park sensibly and leave plenty of space for the bus (and other large vehicles like the emergency services) to get through safely.

East Bergholt Horticultural Society are holding a speakers evening on Friday 10th May. Our guest speaker will be Jim Buttress talking about ’65 years in horticulture’.

Jim started his career in gardening at an early age and began his training at RHA Wisley. He then moved on to Croydon Parks, Greater London Council eventually becoming in charge of the Royal Parks. His ‘clients’ have included Her Majesty the Queen Mother and Her Majesty the Queen.

In addition to his gardening talents, Jim is a RHS judge, often seen in his trademark bowler hat. He has been a very popular judge on TV’s The Big Allotment Challenge and judging Britain in Bloom.

Not to be seen idle, he has written books too.

He has won 8 Gold Medals at Chelsea and in recognition of his contribution to horticulture, in 2006, he was awarded the high accolade in the gardening world, the Victoria Medal of Honour.

Report to Parishes, Alton Ward April 2019 Barbergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw LOOKING FORWARD (TO IT)

This will be my last report to Alton Ward. The new wards start on the very day of the election, May 2nd. Stutton & Tattingstone become part of Stour & Orwell Wards, respectively. I’ll continue to represent Alton Ward meantime. So, should something come up, I can cover it for you.

I’ll be an Independent candidate for the (new) single member Brantham Ward, where I’ve lived, raised my family, worked, and the place I’ve loved. Brantham is facing active major applications right now and, potentially, in the next few years. Major stuff goes to committee. The political makeup and proportions of that committee are the same as the Council. This election will decide that makeup, maybe for four years. If we are to have any hope of better decisions in planning, we need councillors prepared to use their discretion to make better decisions. Dealing with Brantham Planning has already occupied six years of my life. (There

was quite a lot of other stuff though.) One way or another, that will continue.

My central point is what your future councillors will be facing in Babergh and in general. I’m working very hard here not to get too political. This is a report, not an election leaflet. I’ve always preferred analysis and information, as a consistent approach.

The overwhelming factors in Local Government have been the austerity programmes and the effects of National Planning Policy. Councils have seen cuts in central government support of 35-40+% (figures vary). Take away a third of your income?

How would you deal with that? Planning policy has presumed, in a ‘golden thread’, that councils are legally obliged to grant planning permissions in favour of a, poorly defined, sustainable development.

That ‘double whammy’ explains the decision making that we’ve usually hated.

Still analysing, what will they be dealing with? 2015 saw a General Election, raised turnout and the first

majority administration in Babergh’s history. With 31 out of 43 seats, and on board with the Government approach, Conservatives were able to plan to consolidate their position.

This was the oppositions ‘mushroom period’, kept in the dark and covered. But when the Conservatives started splintering, we asserted ourselves and could take a larger role within Council decision making.

The new members seem unlikely to face the initial situation. No General Election effect?, high tide past and fewer members.

They’re going to have to work harder. It’s never been tougher, with more responsibility, since 1974.

initial training and future development. This existed before, but the commitment died out fairly quickly. I went to everything!

50% of the 2015 council were brand new. Some had done little preparation, not really expecting to be elected. There won’t be that much turnover this time, so hopefully more continuity. My own committee, Overview and Scrutiny have, by now, met to look forward, scrutinise our own work and make recommendations to our successors.

The last two years of 2015-19 have been, in my opinion, the better ones.

Babergh have looked forward, prepared, updated our constitution again, based on those two years of experience. We have Cabinet Government for at least three more years, so I’ve sought to ‘deal with it’, as has Derek Davis, the only opposition cabinet member. The new Council must complete the Joint

Local Plan, a possible merger with Mid Suffolk is still possible, serious deficits loom for two years and there are a host of issues you’d never have thought of. An insight into some of them, might be in the Scrutiny Annual Report.

This can be found in pages 27-58 (pdf numbering) of the public Council Papers for March, at http://tinyurl. com/y6m5w5ud I’ve asked for a Babergh Scrutiny link as well. I’m honestly proud of the work that committee has done over the last two years.

THE VOTE That’s what I think your next councillor will face.

Please vote for whoever you believe to be the best candidate, who will do the work, who knows the community. Experience can be gained. We all started knowing only a little. I’ve worked with members from all political groups and I don’t subscribe to the cynicism of social media.

It’s a tool which can be used sensibly, or destructively. All candidates deserve your respect. They’re going to have to work hard and none of them deserve abuse. Above all, resist the temptation to give up on it all. These matters matter.

They affect you. Use your vote, for both the District and Parish elections.

Police are reminding dog owners to take appropriate steps to keep their dogs under control after two incidents in the West Suffolk recently.

Sergeant Brian Calver from the Rural Crime Team said, “Despite repeated appeals, attacks on sheep and livestock by dogs continue happen across our county. We recognise that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and take appropriate action to keep their pets under control around livestock. Farmers have a right to shoot any dogs that are attacking livestock and nobody wants to see this happen. I would remind dog owners or those walking dogs that they are responsible for any damage that the dog in their care may commit.

Acting as an Attorney There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA); one for property and financial affairs (LPA PFA) and one for health and welfare (LPA HW).

If you are the adult child of elderly parents we would encourage you to talk to them now about the future and whether they have considered putting LPAs in place.

However, as potential Attorneys, it’s important that you understand what your role and responsibilities will be. You must always act in the “best interests” of the donor.

You will either be appointed as a sole Attorney or with another. This may be on a joint basis, where all decisions must be made together, or a joint and several basis, which means that Attorneys can make decisions on their own or with the other named Attorneys.

You must make sure that you check the LPA for instructions and preferences. If the LPA includes instructions then by law you must follow them. If preferences are included you should also consider them when making a decision on behalf of the donor, taking into account any wishes or views that the donor has previously disclosed to you.

Make sure you record any decisions you make as well as any meetings you have to substantiate your decisions. In this way, if any questions are raised, by family members or the Office of the Public Guardian you will have evidence as to the reasons you made those decisions.

Do We Want Driverless Cars?

A good question and one that we should be asking about many things which the ever-marching world of technological innovation offers us. The list could include nuclear power, artificial intelligence and designer babies, all of which have the benefits and drawbacks. Take nuclear power; in spite of the problem of disposal of nuclear waste and the size of the land they occupy, there is no doubt that they are better for the environment than burning fossil fuels. As I write, today’s EADT articled a meeting of the good people in the Sizewell area about their worries at the prospect of yet another nuclear station.

And artificial intelligence? This is much more threatening; data is being gathered about us every time we go on line or log into one of the social media sites. Much of these data is used to build a comprehensive picture of our life-style so that advertisers can exploit our weakness to spend.

Innocent enough you may say, but when it

is used to persuade us to act against out better judgment of the national interest it is a threat to democracy.

Now back my opening question on driverless cars. It seems like the lap of luxury if we can step into our vehicle, tell it where to go and spend the journey time reading or taking a nap.

But not so fast; will we not miss the skill of driving or that sense or being in control? Can we really be sure that the machine’s computer will be able to deal with every situation we may encounter on the journey? Then there is the issue of unemployment if driverless taxis, delivery vehicles and long haul lorries come to pass. When it comes to designer babies we are immediately into issues of morality. Brantham Scout & Guides Over the last couple of months there has been a fantastic range of activities undertaken by the various Brantham Girl Guiding & Scouting Units. The Rainbows have been celebrating festivals from other cultures which has included Scottish dancing on Burns night and trying some haggis!

For Australia day they learnt about Australian animals and made koala masks and for Chinese New Year the Rainbows tried out using chopsticks and made some Chinese lanterns. Saint David’s Day involved decorating cakes to look like sheep, making Welsh dragon spoons and learning all about the Welsh flag.

Some of the Rainbows also took part in an exclusive Girlguiding cinema screening of Mary Poppins Returns where hundreds of Girlguiding members took over several screens!

The Rainbows meet on Monday evenings during term time and are running at full capacity until after Easter 2020, however, it is never too early to get your daughter on the waiting list https://go.girlguiding. org.uk/join-us/join-as-

The Beaver Scouts have been busy learning the Green Cross Code and putting this in to practice during a walk in the dark through Lawford!

They have also been learning about different cultures including Chinese New Year.

The Beaver Scouts have also been busy taking part in ‘YouShape’ month and have earned their ‘YouShape’ badges.

As part of the Scouts ‘YouShape’ programme the Beavers got to chose some of their activities; enjoying a guided tour of Ipswich Town Football Club and swimming at Crown Pools. Over the coming months there will be a visit from the RNLI and the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Girls or boys can join Beavers from age 6 - 8 but there is also a waiting list so register your child’s name as early as possible. Meetings take place on a Monday evening at the Scout Hut in Factory Lane, from 5.45 - 6.45 pm. Please contact Lin Dally on 01255871059 for further details.

The Cub Scouts have been enjoying a fantastic range of activities

too, completing their gardener badge and learning about healthy eating and the importance of keeping fit. The Cubs have also had an opportunity to gain a broader understanding of different cultures and recently visited a Gurdwara. Other activities to name just a few have included box fort building; fire lighting and cooking; taking part in a panto sleepover and an evening of tobogganing.

During the recent half term holidays the Scouts held a fundraising event with a difference – caving in Brantham! The Scout & Guide Group hut hosted a network of tunnels all built from cardboard boxes and children were invited to navigate their way through. Money raised from the event is being put towards Project 2000 which is raising funds for a new Headquarters for the group. The current hut was built in 1948 as a temporary base and is in urgent need of replacing. A huge amount of effort has gone in to this endeavour and a staggering £20,000 has been raised to date.

Flu Vaccinations

As of 27th January, approximately 77% of our patients aged over the age of 65 have been vaccinated against flu. This is the highest rate we have achieved for a number of years and we are ranked 9th out of 40 practices in Suffolk.

Although this is a good achievement, we want to do even better next flu season. This season we had four flu clinics, two at each site, after which patients could make appointments. This worked well, but please let us know if you have any ideas on how we can improve the system to make it as easier for our patients to receive a vaccination, bearing in mind we have in the region of 4,200 eligible patients. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll discuss these ideas with the PPG prior to planning next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flu clinics.

Staff Changes We have had a few staff changes recently. Dr McDonald and Dr Ola will sadly be leaving the practice in February, though are likely to continue to work for us occasionally when we need locum GPs. However, Dr Vincent Omorogbe joined the practice as a full-time GP 42

So with Dr Tetteh and Dr Victoria we now have four full-time GP Partners. We also have Dr Nasta and our two Nurse Practitioners June and Sarah.

Moni, our pharmacist has left us in December but Vicky, a pharmacy technician, joined the practice in January and will undertake a similar role, answering many medication queries patients may have.

Although there is a national shortage of GPs, we are fortunate to have five permanent doctors supported by an excellent clinical team. Our aim is to minimise the need for locum doctors so we can improve continuity of care, which is one of the main points we have identified from patient feedback.

Recent Meetings

Toni Neobard & Kate Broad, family historians and authors presented “For Better or Far Worse” on 13 March. This was a light-hearted look at marriage and relationships through the eyes of Victorians.

What happened if they didn’t marry and what if you did but were not happy with your choice? It was a glimpse at bizarre goings-on showing wedded bliss wasn’t always so! On Wednesday 20 March our first Member’s Quiz Night took place at in The Constable Hall. This event was much enjoyed by all present who thanked the organiser June Escott.

Future Meetings

On 10 April the popular speaker Mark Mitchels will talk to us on “The Genius of Charles Dickens”. Dickens rose to become a great novelist by sheer talent and determination. He worked a self-imposed schedule that never relaxed and in the

Stour Valley U3A end he probably brought about his early death. But the novels survive, to be rediscovered by each generation. What sort of man was he? His genius is astonishing and this talk uses biography and extracts from his books to re-create the man and his achievements.

Our speaker on 8 May is Dr Helen Geake, National Finds Adviser, Portable Antiquities Scheme. She will talk about local finds recorded by PAS, archaeology found by the public. She will explain what to do if you find an historic artefact whilst gardening, beachcombing or walking the dog.

This talk look at how archaeologists reconstruct items and will include details of local finds.

Dr Stephen Ashworth, Senior Lecturer at UEA will talk on “Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics” on 12 June. How good are we at intuitively judging probabilities? Should everyone be able to earn more than the average wage Is it a scandal that doctors/dentists/ academics are below the national average? An excursion into statistics & probabilities, which is hoped, will encourage critical consideration of the statistics with which we are bombarded every day.
