DAWID RYSKI

Both born in 1982 the Mizielińskis are partners in life and in art, illustrators who are associated with the revolution in the Polish children’s book market. Each one of their books trailblazes new trends and becomes an international best seller. So it was with Maps, which, apart from being one of the most frequently published Polish books abroad, has generated a worldwide interest in the art of cartography, and has been published in a combined total of over 3,000,000 copies. The duo has received numerous awards and distinctions for their book and Internet designs, including the prestigious international Bologna Ragazzi Award (2010), the French Prix Sorcières (2013) and the Italian Premio Andersen (2013). Koshka Design (Dagmara Socha – Rynkiewicz & Patrycja Jędruszek-Januszewska) is a brand created in 2015 at the initiative of two mums, who with no conditions, resources or space, but with passion for screen printing and handmade stuff, decided to create something from the scratch. The first ideas were implemented at our homes, with our children on our laps, without appropriate equipment, making everything dirty. Those were our first designs, then we created in our mini studio in Edinburgh. We focus on subdued colours, prevailing black and white contrasts, while admiring and respecting simple forms. Hand-making is also of great importance here.

KOSHKA DESIGN

Kokodyl was initially an artistic project by Joanna Kaczmarek, a graduate of the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts. The original idea was to create multifunctional toys that would support children in the process of sensory integration, be distinguished by unique aesthetics and safe for the youngest of children including infants. Currently Kokodyl manufactures and sells toys, sensory stimulation facilities, baby play room decor and softplays. Our products translate artistic vision into high quality educational toys for children. Kokodyl toys are designed to support the proper sensory integration and comprehensive development of children. They provide children with subtle tactile and auditory stimuli, encourage them to do a variety of manual and motor activities and stimulate imagination. Our products are made from certified fabrics, antiallergic fillers and additives that meet all EU standards. Manufactured in Poland by hand-made method, with attention to detail and child safety.

TEPEE DZIABĄGI Dziabągi are pilowlike toys with many different functions, limited only by imagination of the small users. Each element can be tied together and combined with special rubber bands, that give ability of building shapes, constructions or even costumes. Dziabągi can be also use as furniture for the children’s rooms. Tied together are comfortable seat where children can relax or even take a short nap after a long day full of fun. They are designed to support children’s development of balance, coordination of movement, manual skills and most importantly imagination. Plaing with Dziabągi is a prefect traning for bodies and minds of young childern.

Indian tepee was a spontaneous idea which was immediately implemented. We took inspiration from our childhood memories and the needs of our children. Having no clue how to do it, we got down to work and, by trial and error method, we made our first cut-out, creating a shape from large material pieces. Then sewing and overprinting was slightly easier. Our tepee was made from totally natural fabric with original and simple overprints, ideal for a room, garden or balcony. In such a tent children like spending hours, in their own world, with their teddy bears, favourite books, in a mysterious place.

PŁASZCZKI (STINGRAY COLLECTION) Collection of sensory objects from little pillows

to big poufs that support children’s motor skills development. Filled with natural husk, cherry pits or styrofoam balls provide many tactile and auditory stimuli. Stingray fun encourages children to many creative and physical activities, improves balance and coordination, and massages the body. After the day full of adventures, the stingray transforms into a comfortable puff that helps children to sleep or relax.

THE BEETLE Sensory toy with lacing function. The beetle is a very pragmatic and disciplined 14

fellow who easily interacts with children. During the game, all the children will learn the difficult art of tying laces, knots and knobs. His heart grows when he sees small hands interlaced with strings, practising concentration and developing their manual skills. The toy supports sensory integration therapy.

PANI JUREK

Joanna Lubońska is a visual artist who has been exploring the use of found objects and recycled materials to create surreal immersive environments. Joanna graduated from the University of Silesia in Cieszyn, Poland with an MA degree in Artistic Education in the Field of Fine Arts, and has exhibited various works since resettling in her current home of Edinburgh in 2007. Her most recent project “The Plastic Vortex”, highlighted the fact that we live in an age of mass production in a throw away society which is becoming an ever increasing problem to our environment. Through her work Joanna aims to find new ways of working with throw away materials, using her skills as a sculptor and set designer to create immersive sensory experiences.

Pani Jurek is a brand established by Magda Jurek, an artist and designer. She has a non-standard attitude to objects. She designs non-static objects, exceeding their stereotypical function and enabling interaction with a user. Her conceptual attitude towards an object and unwillingness to complete its function, as well as fondness for colours, result from painting studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She follows an idea of a balanced development and ecological choice of materials. The designer is also active in the association “Seated in Warsaw”, where together with Edyta Ołdak she implements social projects and municipal space projects. She lives and works in Ignaców near Warszawa.

POLYMER CAVE – SENSORY ROOM For this project Joanna plans to re-use materials already classed as trash, and transform a dark and empty space into a space filled with ambient lights and nature sound. Through repetition and multiplication the fluid structures will create a biomorphic form creating order and aesthetic harmony resulting in an environment for little ones to explore, relax and de-stress from the constant stimulation of everyday life. Through this installation young people can have fun and learn about the potential of creating beautiful objects from everyday consumables such as plastic bottles, cups or bubble wrap.

MARIA S.C. Maria S.C. chandelier is made from laboratory test tubes, set in two plywood bands. This surprising material and geometric shape makes this lamp both classic and innovative. The double glass cylinder recalls Art Deco forms in a unique contemporary way. The use of ready-made objects gives an appearance with a Duchamp idea. The lamp is inspired by the Polish scientist, Maria Sklodowska-Curie, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The tubes are detachable and the lamp provides the opportunity for visual experiment by creating a variety of configurations and arrangements. PSIKUSY (DOG TRICKS) The book “PSIKUSY” is about how the mixed breed dogs arise, about dog personalities, the shapes and colours galore, that only nature can create. The publication contains 40 cards of purebred dog breeds, designed for cutting and making collages. Using the cut muzzles, paws, bellies, tails, shags, patches, and looks you can create various “hybrids” of the world. Plenty of shapes as well as of graphic and painting techniques gives an infinite number of dog variations. Portrait of dog can be framed and put on the wall next to family photos and used to create an animation. The title PSIKUSY means tricks in Polish. The packaging is also a sort of puzzle. It allows to create a dog face with ears and tongue. The book is dedicated to children and adults, with an idea to promote mixed-breed dogs and mongrels. The idea behind the book to see hidden beauty of mongrels, dogs often homeless, abandoned and kept on chains. The concept and graphic design is created by Pani Jurek and Małgorzata Gurowska, Dorota Masłowska wrote a witty statement which is the praise of mongrelism and diversity, dog breeds are portrayed by distinguished Polish illustrators: Jacek Ambrożewski, Małgorzata Gurowska, Marta Ignerska, Pani Jurek, Edyta Ołdak, Paulina Pankiewicz, Maria Strzelecka, and seven-year-old Wandzia Hermanowicz. The book is bilingual, in Polish and English. It is intended for both children and adults. Publisher: Gang Design / Pani Jurek

Aleksandra Richert Studio, since 2012, has been exploring fabrics. The projects are connected with the closest surroundings of people. The designer’s assumption is to disenchant a notion of artistic fabric, taking it closer to users – also to the youngest ones – in the form of modern objects with practical functions. Textiles dedicated to children are toys which develop imagination, in juicy colours, sculptural cushions like cuddly toys, inspiring mats and rugs. They are rakish, multi-sensory, interactive. They inspire with a shape, colour and form. They encourage to touching, stroking, plucking, scratching, exploring on each side. They are all made in author’s techniques, mostly hand-made what makes them unique.

ALEKSANDRA RICHERT

Alicja Patanowska joins life in two cities (Wrocław and London), glass with porcelain and the arts with designing. She focuses on the need for user’s involvement, establishing relationships, possible only as a result of conscious cooperation. She is interested in a theme of trash connected with a critical reflection over human needs and the escalation of a consumption chaos. Craft skills have key meaning for her artistic and designing practice – she creates by working on materials. She often uses a term of design through making, which assumes laboratory work and manual experiments with materials. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (2012) and Royal College of Art in London (2014). She lives in Wrocław. Her products are available, among others, in Merci in Paris, Barbican in London, in MAMA in New York, Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin. She is a prize winner of: British Glass Biennale , WARTO Gazeta Wyborcza Award, MUST HAVE! Plebiscite, and her works are a part of the arts and pattern-designing collection, among others, Shanghai Museum of Glass.

PLATE-BOARDS Plate-boards are plates whose surface enables multi-drawing with chalk. The product is made of elements which in a factory, due to quality reasons, are treated as waste. An inspiration for this project were formerly popular faience, richly painted, decorative wall plates. Plate-boards are to stimulate creative thinking of children. They can form a background for creating unconventional wall paintings but also they can help in learning the alphabet, and then spelling or mathematical formulas.

LOZENGES CARPET (160CM X 240CM) Pastylki is a felt variation on the carpet. The idea for its creation was triggered by the contact with industrial design and its limitations. Made of felt, the carpet is designed mainly for having fun. By using a simple material and multiplying elements, the design forms a rhythmic, multi-layered and spatial composition. pastylki carpet is more than just a decoration. It fires children’s imagination, teaches them to build their own space and stimulates their creativity. The design was awarded on the Prodeco (2004) and Toy for Fun (2009) competitions.

HOCKO

DZIKIE DZIECI Dzikie Dzieci (Eng. Wild Children) is a brand that offers natural wooden toys that remain a part of nature due to minimal processing. All of the toys are manufactured from wooden chips, bark, sticks, branches and roots found in the undergrowth. In order to retain the natural diversity, each toy is individually hand-crafted in a small workshop in Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Dzikie Dzieci is a series of open and undefined toys that support the concept of imagination play. The project has emerged from our belief that remaining close to nature teaches us, develops our senses, heals us and is necessary for a child’s proper development. Dzikie Dzieci is a company established by two sisters: an artist and designer, Anna Bera and a psychotherapist, Małgorzata Matwiejczyk.

HOCKO (Wojciech Drab i Magdalena Guzik-Drab) brand was created by the combination of our greatest passions: design, children and fun. We are pattern designers acting as Grupa Projektowa odRzeczy, and parents fascinated with children’s world. All HOCKO toys are manufactured in Poland, from Polish materials, according to our design. We do our best so that they are non-obvious, requiring intellectual engagement and opposing the colourful crush of buzzing and flickering “Made in China” toys. Each of them underwent reliable tests and was evaluated by our private little testers. We rely on smart and imaginative toys which join various generations – toys which we want to play with. Our products are appreciated by experts and children. We have been awarded prestigious prizes and distinctions. W W W. H O C KO. P L | | KO N TA K T@ H O C KO. P L

The functions of the items are symbolic, which allows a child to assign new meanings to them during play.

HOCKO BLOCKS HOCKO blocks are cardboard construction blocks to play at home and in the open air. Their design does not impose ready solutions and does not supress children’s creativity with excessive stimuli. They are based on a simple idea but they are not an obvious toy and they require intellectual involvement. The blocks invite to group-playing and teach cooperation. They are made from ecologic grey cardboard and they encourage to creative activities: drawing, cutting, decorating. HOCKO DRESSING-UP Dressing-up are cardboard accessories which take children to the world of fables, princesses, knights and fairies. The set includes flat cut-out shapes for do-it-yourself assembly and decoration. Children practise their manual skills, creativity and precision. HOCKO JIGSAW HOCKO jigsaws for colouring are double-sided grey cardboard jigsaws. Two pictures with varied difficulty levels guarantee great fun to younger (2+) and older (5+) children.

WILD CHILDREN AND GROWING A FOREST A set of natural wooden building elements including a bonfire, a cauldron, sausages to cook, a table, a The play consists in matching trees and holes in a board. Each tree has its unique shape and was processed to a minimal extent so as to retain the most of its natural form. The wooden elements have an interesting texture and encourage to experience and experiment.

24

STUMPS A set of blocks with unique shapes and natural design. During play a child experiences the sensory diversity of wood: from the coarse bark to the finely sanded section surface. The simple form guarantees virtually endless possibilities of use during play. Each set is unique and manufactured from a different wood species. The toy is impregnated with natural vegetable oil.

HOKUS POKUS lIt is not a mystery that children perceive the world differently from adults. While we follow accepted patterns, children keep asking questions and prove that every challenge carries lots of possibilities. Thus, we created Hokus Pokus blocks. Their decorative geometric elements do not limit children’s imagination. Cohesive elements enable the creation of varied combinations – both abstractive and those depicting realistic animals. Content: 21 wooden blocks with painted geometric shapes placed in a cotton bag. Single block size 4cm x 4cm x 4cm. ZIMOZWIERZ „Zimowierz” is a jigsaw consisting of three wooden blocks depicting cryophilic animals. The primary figures here include: walrus, killer whale, bear and whale. It is possible to make real and abstract animals from the blocks. Children become familiar with animals living in cold areas and they enhance their imagination and creativity. For children over 3 years old. Content: 3 wooden blocks with painted animals: walrus, killer whale, bear and whale. Single block size: 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm. FIND AN ANIMAL Show to your child how many animals it can meet in a household. Teach children about differences among such animals, where we take food products from and titbits. Children will develop their imagination through matching the blocks to make household animals. Each block has a colour corresponding to a given animal in order to facilitate matching. “Blocks” may be used not only for making specific animals but also for creating geometric compositions or abstractive creatures. Children can enhance their spatial imagination and become more sensitive to the nature which will be closer to them owing to the blocks. For children over 3 years old. Content: 12 wooden blocks with painted animal heads: ram, duck, rooster, horse, cow, pig. Single block size 4cm x 4cm x 4cm.

OOur grandpa, Dziadek Borowy, knew that the woods gives happiness. Our company has been operating for three generations and actually no-one remembers when we planed first wood beams. Yet, everyone remembers year 1969, when it was the first time we made wooden toys… Our grandpa loved creating new things which guaranteed joyfulness […]. He told the truth: “creating for children gives happiness also to adults”. We know it. We created Wooden Story out from our love to the nature and to make children happy. Our toys are inspired by the nature and hand-made… we create in marvellous Beskids. Our toys came from the woods… thus children play with them in a natural way, they become a part of this world. Recycling, environmental protection, beauty of wood and colours. Our toys develop senses, they are delicate, they attract with their natural colours and smell of the woods.

WOODEN STORY

We are a family-owned company established in 2015. Wood&Paper designs have specific goals. Nothing happens without a reason. We emphasise simplicity and a form but the primary feature is functionality. We take from pattern designing of 50 ‘s and 60’s of the 20th c., when Polish design was at the world’s level.

LITTLE GESTALTEN Nothing fosters children’s imaginations better than a book. Good books can help children understand the world, pique their natural curiosity, impart knowledge, and hearten them to be empathetic or brave. Desiring to contribute to this inspiring mission, Gestalten launched its own line of children’s books called Little Gestalten. “Make it a rule never to give a child a book you would not read yourself,” said George Bernard Shaw. These words are at the heart of our vision. We publish books that a child enjoys and that an adult admires, as each relates to the narratives on different levels. Gifted storytellers and creative illustrators can change the way we see the world. Whether in the form of a poetic picture book, a classic fairytale with a contemporary twist, or an original work of nonfiction, Little Gestalten titles are bound to capture the fantasy of children and adults alike.
