Upcycling & Climate Change Possible future solutions inspired by vernacular architecture lessons

Journal edition no. XIII Editor: Sergiu NISTOR Coordinator: Ioana ZACHARIAS VULTUR

The 2022 edition of CSAV Journal invites the authors to try to respond to the contemporary and future challenges of the rural settlements and their environment, by learning from vernacular architecture’s essential definition: adaptation to human needs and environment. The two keywords of the topic are interdependent: upcycling and climate change. By definition, upcycling means a creative reuse process of “discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original” (Oxford English Dictionary). Therefore, how can we apply this method in rural architecture & design for a more sustainable, ecofriendly approach ? The context is the contemporary challenge of climate change. It is high time to take action and find solutions, as the effects are here and visible through a wide range of hazards: floods due to heavy rainfall and snow or the overflowing of rivers, droughts, heavy winds (and even cyclones on Romanian territory), etc. as well as problems created by human behaviour. Indeed, the contrast between the idyllic Romanian rural settlements and the way communities and newcomers behave can be a subject of debate and a problem to solve, where architecture and urban planning professionals can have an essential educational role.
