Welcome
The Duke of Edinburgh Award

Hannah receives her DofE award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a youth awards programme that was founded in the UK in 1956 by the late Prince Philip, it is now awarded in 144 nations. The awards recognise teens and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement exercises modelled on Hurt Hahn’s solutions to his “six declines of modern youth”.

Last weekend our very own Hannah Mycock at the New Mills office received her award at Buckingham Palace.

Hannah said …..

‘On Friday 19th May I was finally able to attend my Gold DofE Awards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace, having had my final expedition delayed due to Covid. I was probably one of the oldest participants, at almost 26 years old, and so the ceremony felt like a long time coming.

In order to receive the award, I had to complete 12 months of volunteering, 12 months of physical activity (I chose swimming) 6 months of a new skill (I wrote a recipe book) and a five-day residential trip. For this I went to Poland with other history students to learn more about the impact of WW2 and the history of the country.

Finally, I had to complete a four-day walking expedition in Exmoor. Unfortunately, the weather was appalling and so the first night of the expedition was spent on the damp floor of a campsite toilets due to a leaking tent!

However, we persevered and on the final night the weather finally picked up and we were enjoying stunning views out to sea, from our last campsite. Being an avid walker, I really enjoyed the expedition but it certainly was challenging at times.

the tent.

It was great to celebrate the achievement at the Palace and I even caught a glimpse of Prince Edward as he gave his speech, although he was a small speck in the distance because of the number of people in attendance.

I hope to become a DofE assessor in the future and help other young achieve awards’
