Welcome to Danville An introduction to the area’s people, places and events

Perryville Every October The Battle of Perryville took place in October 1862 and is now re-enacted during that month each fall. Hundreds of participants are in attendance annually to commemorate the Civil War encounter between Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg and Union Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell. The battle was considered a strategic Union victory because Bragg withdrew to Tennessee soon afterward, plus the Union retained control of the critical border state of Kentucky for the remainder of the war. The Battle of Perryville is considered one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, and was the largest battle fought in the state of Kentucky. The three-day re-enactment includes family-life encampments, a military band, battlefield tours and a Civil War play.

Booked Solid Here is a novel idea: Boyle County Public Library, which is housed in a 1939 building, was recently renovated and expanded to include a brightly lit rotunda entranceway and large children’s area. The building on West Broadway in downtown Danville began its expansion in September 2007 and the project was completed in January 2010. The library is now 45,000 square feet, more than double its previous size, and features five floors of books, public access computers, CDs and DVDs, Blu-rays, MP3 players and genealogical/research materials.

Sharps and Flats Take note: The Great American Brass Band Festival arrives in Danville each summer and draws more than 30,000 visitors. The four-day event in June is committed to preserving brass band music through performances and education. All concerts are free and take place in downtown Danville, and the festival prides itself on attracting some of the best brass bands in the world. Groups that have performed in the recent past include New Birth Brass Band of New Orleans, Jack Brass Band of Minneapolis, Circle City Sidewalk Stompers of Indianapolis, Walnut Street Ragtime Ramblers of Lexington and the Canadian Staff Salvation Army Band.

Danville Independent and Boyle County Schools One of the major advances taking place in Kentucky schools is the Innovation Lab, a partnership forged between Boyle County and Danville Independent Schools, the Kentucky Department of Education, the University of Kentucky, Centre College and the Council of Chief State School Officers. “The goal of the project is to truly change the way we approach education in the 21st century. Schools today still function much like they did 50 years ago,” says Dr. Carmen Coleman, Danville schools superintendent. “The practical approaches can be the same, but we’re teaching students for a world that is very different. We want to provide a safe place for innovating, a place where teachers can get out of the traditional school setting and try some very different things.” The goal of the project is to establish a networked lab where stakeholders very intentionally create the best learning experiences possible to prepare students to lead and collaborate, adapt, imagine, ask

questions, persevere, access and analyze information, think critically, problem-solve and communicate, as these are critical skills for success in today’s world. “We know that to be motivated to learn and do the work, we’ve got to share the work with the kids,” Dr. Coleman says. “We have to teach kids to access and analyze information. Schools used to be the keepers of information, but now our task is very different: We have to teach kids to use the vast amounts of information that are available.” The lab is located at Centre College, which is convenient to both Danville and Boyle County schools. Plans are to open in the 2011-2012 school year. For more information about the schools involved in the Innovation Lab partnership, visit www.danvilleschools.net or www.boyle.k12.ky.us. Kentucky School for the Deaf The Kentucky School for the Deaf also utilizes technology to create a better educational atmosphere for its students. Thanks to Smart Boards, video conferencing equipment, videophones and other tech tools, students at KSD have a better opportunity to learn visually. “All of our classrooms have Smart Boards, so everything we do can be presented visually,” says Rodney Buis, principal. “The students can use the touch screens to access the Internet and learning software. We also have video conferencing equipment that links our classrooms to other deaf schools across the country. That allows our students to communicate with other deaf students directly through sign language.” For more information about KSD, visit www.ksd.k12.ky.us.

Central Kentucky Cancer Center gives DanvilleBoyle County residents advanced cancer care

Photography By antony boshier

T

he new Central Kentucky Cancer Center (CKCC) is a fully integrated treatment facility incorporating a strategic team approach to provide comprehensive, advanced cancer care for the Danville region. Located on the South Danville Bypass, the 36,000-square-foot center aligns the entire spectrum of cancer care options, including medical oncology, radiation oncology and a multitude of support services in one location – this made possible through a unique partnership of visionary medical providers: Commonwealth Cancer Center, 21st Century Radiation Oncology, Ephraim McDowell Health and UK Healthcare. The “one-stop” concept for the treatment facility allows the center to streamline treatment for patients, each service complementing the other in

providing thorough cancer care, from beginning to end, in a centralized location close to home. Centralized Cancer Care A key visionary in planning the new treatment center is oncologist/ hematologist Thomas Baeker, M.D., whose medical oncology practice Commonwealth Cancer Center has provided care to Danville and surrounding communities for more than 15 years. The concept for CKCC came about when he recognized a need for a regional destination that provides a coordinated approach to complete cancer care. “Our ability, with this new facility, to combine modalities of chemotherapy and radiation with other aspects of care in a single location is extremely beneficial to patients,” says Baeker.

“This is not a collection of providers in one place. It’s a coordinated team approach where we’re all working together in a seamless effort for the patient.” The scope of coordinated services offered at the facility ranges from the latest technology in chemotherapy and radiation treatments, to opportunities to participate in clinical trials. Patient support care, social services, even a developing volunteer program and other community initiatives all work in concert to provide a complete cancer treatment system. Dr. Gregory Carlsen and Ephraim McDowell Health. “We provide cancer patients and their families one-stop shopping, so to speak, for accessing information, technology and oncology physicians under one roof,” says Ron Barbato, program director of Cancer Support Services for EMH. Located inside the CKCC, the Cancer Support Center provides patients with one place to have their blood drawn, have X-rays and EKGs and also attend physical and occupational therapy. The Cancer Support Center also houses the region’s only Flexitouch lymphedema pump system for cancer patients with lymphedema. Radiation oncologist Gregory Carlsen, M.D., with 21st Century Radiation Oncology, says his field emphasizes technology, an area where his practice has all the progressive capabilities and latest advancements in radiation therapy in place. It’s this access to cutting-edge cancer-fighting technology that makes CKCC a primary destination for mid-Kentucky residents who now have the option to remain close to home for world-class cancer care. “In the end, it comes down to our patients and our commitment to meet their complete needs with the most thorough, personalized, comfortable care possible,” adds Commonwealth’s Baeker. “That’s our top priority.” For more information about CKCC, visit www.centralkentucky cancercenter.com.

Worth Saving With a distinctive civilian and military history, downtown Perryville has a unique charm Story By Megan Pacella | Photography By antony boshier

W

ith a rich history that dates back to the 18th century, downtown Perryville has plenty of character worth preserving. Luckily, a group of students from the University of Kentucky’s Landscape Architecture Program recognized the importance of maintaining the historical architecture and local businesses located on Merchant’s Row, one of the nation’s only 19th-century Mercantile districts still in existence. In 2007, the Perryville Enhancement Project partnered with the city of Perryville, the Danville/Boyle County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Heart of Danville and the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership to create the Perryville Revitalization Main Street Program. Through the Main Street program, the cultural landscape of downtown Perryville will be both preserved and enhanced. While some historic buildings and businesses will be restored to their appearance in the glory days, plans for expansion also include a boardwalk cafe, dock for fishing behind city hall, farmers market building, visitors center and new landscaping.

Green’s Drug Store and Morning Glory Gallery Before volunteers swooped in to repair the crumbling drywall and peeling paint in Green’s Drug Store, the historic building had fallen into serious disrepair. A few hours and a couple hundred dollars later, the Main Street Project had completed its first task. In June 2010, local businessman

Jerry Houck moved into the historic 19th-century building that once housed Green’s Drug Store, and opened Perryville Market, selling quilts, home goods, antiques and jewelry. The second task was fixing up Morning Glory Gallery, which was originally known as Burton’s Store in the 1800s. Work on the Morning Glory Gallery is more extensive, but when completed, the building will house a bridal shop that also specializes in Civil War attire. Partners in the program to revitalize Merchants Row include Tour SEKY, Haunted Perryville, Boyle County Government and Perryville Battlefield. For more information about the downtown Perryville revitalization, visit www.betterindanville.com and click Downtown Perryville. Perryville’s Civil War History The event that thrust Perryville into the national spotlight occurred on October 8, 1862. On that date, the Battle of Perryville took place with 16,000 Confederate troops battling 22,000 Union soldiers (out of 58,000 present) in what was one of the fiercest struggles of the Civil War. Perryville stands out among our nation’s historic tourist sites for its unique combination of military and civilian history, and there are efforts being made to promote civil war sites nearby to attract more visitors. The Perryville Battlefield is considered one of the most pristine in the nation, and the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association has worked hard over the years to protect and maintain its integrity as a historic site. For more information, visit www.battleofperryville.com.

anville-Boyle County is home to a wide variety of manufacturers that specialize in everything from aircraft brake systems to plastic injection molding, creating a business climate characterized by variety, convenience and opportunity. Manufacturing Five manufacturing businesses in Danville-Boyle County stand out as the largest players in the local economy: Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems Corporation, Denyo Manufacturing Corporaton, Caterpillar Inc., Panasonic Home Appliances Co. of America and Timberland Company. Meggitt continues to fly high in Danville since its location here in 2006. A manufacturer of carbon disc brakes for the airline industry, Meggitt has climbed to 65 employees and added 30,000 square feet to its facility in 2008. As Meggitt has reorganized globally to be more competitive in the aerospace industry, Danville is fast becoming a center for excellence in carbon operation. With the growth of regional jet service, the sky’s the limit for Meggitt’s future in Danville. Denyo Manufacturing Corporation was founded in 1948 under the name Japan Welding Machine Co. Ltd. Denyo Manufacturing now makes high-quality air compressors, welders and generators for use in applications ranging from residential to commercial. The Danville branch of Caterpillar Inc. was established in 1998. Employing approximately 100 people, the Danville branch manufactures track pins and bushings for use in tractors. The Danville-Boyle County branch of Panasonic Home Appliances Co. of

America was established in 1990. This branch employs roughly 130 people to manufacture numerous types of vacuum cleaners. These vacuum cleaners are used in applications ranging from residential to commercial, and they feature different model styles such as canister and upright vacuums. Finally, the Timberland Company manufactures its name-brand outdoor footwear in addition to its clothing line and accessories. One of Timberland’s two North American distribution centers is established in Danville, Ky. This center, along with Timberland’s other center in Ontario, Calif., is responsible for distributing Timberland footwear to dealers across the United States. Timberland was ranked one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For 2007” by CNNMoney.com. Manufacturing Services Danville also is known for its serviceoriented manufacturing businesses, such as The Allen Company Inc. and Perfection Components LLC. With its headquarters in Lexington, Ky., The Allen Company Inc. uses asphalt created at its Danville plant, as well as its other plants, to provide asphalt paving services to several counties in central Kentucky. In addition to its asphalt services, The Allen Company provides excavation, utility and concrete services. Perfection Components LLC offers plastic injection molding and assembly services, as well as paint and chrome plating services. Perfection Components is partnered with Buckhorn Inc., a manufacturer of returnable plastic packaging, to provide plastics for automotive markets. Perfection Components is a Certified Minority Business that has been in operation since 2002.

Now Hiring New jobs are coming to town Caterpillar Track Components will expand operations and invest $2.8 million in the Danville-Boyle County branch, which will retain existing jobs

and increase employment by approximately 18 people. In addition, Dana Holding Corporation will relocate one of the engine gasket production lines from its Milwaukee

factory to Danville. This increase in operations will add approximately 45 new jobs to the Danville-Boyle County plant.

Besides the usual duties of helping its membership, the chamber is now in its third decade of hosting Leadership Boyle County sessions. It is also involved in a Fast Track program to help businesses get started more efficiently, plus the chamber oversees an Access Loans initiative to help startup businesses acquire more capital.

a conference table and talk for about an hour, after which the owner should know everything about starting his business. Access Loans The Access Loans program brings bankers and financial institutions’ officials to the chamber office to meet with businesses owners who

are looking to secure a loan. “Several bank officials hear the business owner’s pitch, then the officials return to their banks to decide if they want to get involved in the business project,” Fowler says. “Helping businesses be successful – that’s the main reason why our chamber exists.” – Kevin Litwin

Leadership Boyle County This program started in 1983, and Youth Leadership Boyle County was added in 1989. The program runs annually from October to May for adults and from September to April for youth, with participants meeting for all-day sessions once a month. “Leadership Boyle County helps participants not only become better leaders, but it encourages graduates to become civically involved with their community,” says Paula Fowler, executive director of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce. Fowler says one monthly session might highlight education, the next month health and human services, then local government, agriculture, business and industry, heritage and tourism. “This program builds our community’s future by building leaders,” she says. Fast Track Fast Track helps businesses locating to Boyle County or startup businesses become established more easily and more efficiently. “There are so many things a business owner has to know when first establishing a business, and Fast Track helps,” Fowler says. “Owners must know about signage, parking, health codes, fire codes, city and county regulations, and licensing, so a meeting is ultimately called to have the owner talk with people who can answer all questions and concerns.” Fowler says the owner and various officials from city and county departments sit down around

Serving Baked Goods and Nostalgia Burke's Bakery & Delicatessen, found in the center of downtown Danville, maintains a winning combination of delicious food and hometown atmosphere, making it a local favorite. Burke's is tinged with nostalgia for many locals, who relied on the establishment for the birthday cakes of their childhood and the wedding cakes of adulthood. All Burke’s baked goods are made fresh each morning, which means no stale donuts, bread or cookies are to be heard (or tasted) of. The glazed donuts and Chocolate Delites are frequent favorites among customers. Carbo Loading is definitely encouraged with signature menu items such as the Salt-risen bread, Persian rolls and Butterflake rolls. Customers are always encouraged to snatch a batch of Burke’s gingerbread cookies or apple sauce cake before heading out. The sweet tooth can further be indulged with individual-sized pies and pecan fondant cookies.
