Welcome to Glasgow An introduction to the area’s people, places and events

Butterflies for Maddie Inside the Mary Wood Memorial Library in Glasgow is a corner honoring one brave little girl.

Maddie’s Corner is a space dedicated to Maddie Morgan, who died in 2005 from pulmonary veno-occlusive disease at the age of 6.

The corner includes children’s books that Maddie enjoyed, all marked with butterfly stickers and a mural depicting her interacting with butterflies, which were among her favorite creatures. Maddie’s parents created the Butterflies for Maddie Foundation, which uses several events such as a 5K run to raise money for research on PVOD. Barren County residents have shown the foundation great support.

Taking Care of the Herd

The 1,500-acre Barren River Lake Park is a big attraction, offering recreational options such as golf, tennis, volleyball, hiking, cycling, horseback riding and more. The area is also home to sandhill cranes, which typically arrive near the start of every year. With more than 4,000 birds inhabiting the area at the peak of the crane season, the park offers sunrise and sunset tours of roosting sites and nearby cornfields that the birds visit each winter. Visitors who wish to stay overnight can also enjoy the lodge rooms, cottages and campsites along the scenic lake.

The area’s livestock is in good hands. Since 1946, the Animal Clinic of Glasgow has been meeting the community’s veterinary needs. Along with Countryside Animal Clinic, which is also owned and operated by Dr. Stephen Webb, the clinic serves as the only veterinary service in the area that treats both large and small animals. A total of five vets make up the practice, with specialties ranging from livestock to small cats and dogs. Farm calls are frequently made to look after larger animals such as horses, cattle, hogs, etc. A major job of the practice is to perform disease surveillance and ensure animal health before any products are put on the market.

For the Win Taking place at the Glasgow Highland Games, the second annual North American Scottish Athletic Championships is an entertaining event for participants and spectators alike. “It’s a fun event because there’s a lot of goodnatured rivalry between the athletes,” says Maureen Hendrick, executive secretary for the Glasgow Highland Games. “It’s very interesting.” The event is a challenge between two teams, consisting of three athletes from Canada and the United States, respectively. The competitors participate in a variety of events where their strength is judged, as they attempt to throw heavy objects as far or as high as they can. This year, the Glasgow Highland Games will be held June 2-5.

History Comes to Life

Veterans Honored Barren County proudly honors those who have served our country. Glasgow, Cave City, Freedom, Hiseville and Park City all have outdoor memorials that pay tribute to America’s veterans. In addition, the Glasgow-Barren County Veterans Wall of Honor has 1,171 names of locally connected veterans at Beula Nunn Park. All five cities host Veteran’s Day events every November 11, with 21-gun salutes being part of the ceremonies.

Take a trip back in time at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center in downtown Glasgow.

This museum is located in the old Kentucky Pants Factory and treats visitors to an array of exhibits that tell the stories of the people and events that have shaped Barren County’s history, going back to 12,000 B.C. Last year, the Center hosted an evening tour through the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery, where local citizens portrayed historical figures, stepping out from the shadows and speaking about the roles these characters played in creating the city and county. The Center hosts many events that bring history to life.

Happenin’ Hotel Sitting on top of the world’s longest system of caves, and in the middle of a 52,800-acre national park, is the Mammoth Cave Hotel. Named one of Kentucky’s top hotels, it features a variety of room selections, from cozy cottages to rooms with large balcony windows that offer amazing views.

Hotel manager Greg Davis, named Hotelier of the Year by the Kentucky Hotel & Lodging Association, oversees the operations of Travertine Restaurant and the Mammoth Cave Hotel. The park’s visitor center is undergoing a $14 million expansion that will triple the size of the old building and include interactive displays, a bookstore and a display of Native American artifacts found in the cave.

Tomorrow Renovations continue to improve county

I

n these days of Botox and plastic surgery, Barren County is getting a face-lift.

A number of projects ranging from small to large have been occurring to renovate the county and make it more picturesque and functional. One of the smallest yet most interesting projects was the recent construction of a little pond and wetland area at Temple Hill Elementary School.

Sixth grade teacher Debbie Sherfey is interested in environmental education and once designed a wetland while attending Western Kentucky University, so she decided to add one to the Temple Hill Elementary outdoor landscape.

“The school already had an outdoor classroom in place with a stage and seating area, so I wanted to add a wetland where the kids could go and interact with the environment,” she says. “It took months of planning, and

luckily on the day we started digging, we hit a natural spring that was ideal to fill our little pond.”

Lessons Come Naturally The pond is about 18 inches at its deepest and has tadpoles, frogs, trees and native plants, plus there is a little bridge, bluebird boxes and bird feeders.

“It’s good for the environment and is an interesting educational tool, and our little wetland even attracts migratory

birds,” Sherfey says. “I saw a heron relaxing one day before he took off flying again. You never know what you’ll see. I once saw a snake eat a frog at the pond.”

into a bed and breakfast, plus detailed upgrades to Barren River Plaza, as well as the Southgate and Ford Centre shopping centers. Meanwhile, an organization called Sustainable Glasgow Inc. has formed to urge residents to buy local and support local businesses, and has even established a summertime farmers market with local vendors.

Live it Up In February 2011, construction was completed on a 43-apartment unit project that transformed the former Liberty Street Elementary School campus into the Glasgow Graded School Apartments. The apartment complex features three renovated buildings.

“One building has 20 apartments and another has 23, and the third building is occupied by the Glasgow Parks & Recreation Department,” says Glasgow Mayor Rhonda Trautman.

“The apartments are leased to senior citizens at reasonable rates, and it’s an excellent example of using older buildings for new purposes. It’s also good for Glasgow because the apartments are now taxable properties that generate revenue for the city.”

Connect the Docs Last but certainly not least, officials with T.J. Samson Community Hospital announced in January 2011 that a $26 million T.J. Health Pavilion will be added to the hospital’s overall medical facilities in Barren County.

The pavilion will be located in a former Walmart building and several storefronts within Barren River Plaza, with the opening scheduled for September 2012.

Bill Kindred, CEO of T.J. Samson Community Hospital, says Glasgowbased Alliance Corporation was chosen as contractor, while Stengel Hill Architects of Louisville is leading the design efforts.

“Stengel Hill has completed several projects at T.J. Samson over the last seven years,” Kindred says.

The T.J. Health Pavilion will have 126,000 square feet of space for physician offices, as well as diagnostic, preventative treatment and educational services. T.J. Samson Community Hospital has been serving the residents of Barren County and South Central Kentucky since 1929.

an Iacconi knows that companies in the future will conduct business much differently than how business has been conducted in the past.

That’s why the executive director of the Glasgow/Barren County Industrial Development Economic Authority (IDEA) is pleased that officials with Bowling Green Technical College and the Western Kentucky UniversityGlasgow campus are dedicated to providing current-day students and the local workforce with training skills – skills that can be applied to jobs and careers well into the future.

“Our workforce has built up a reputation of being hard working, loyal and trainable, which makes existing companies think about expanding, while new prospective businesses might look hard at locating in the Glasgow/Barren County area,” Iacconi says.

Welcome, Amneal and Integrated The trained workforce and other positive factors have been paying dividends lately for Glasgow/Barren County. Two pharmaceutical companies – Amneal Pharmaceuticals and Integrated Pharmaceutical Packaging – both decided to locate operations in Barren County in 2010. Amneal will ultimately add 50 jobs to its workforce once it is fully up and running, while Integrated plans to hire another 100 employees.

Plenty in Store Meanwhile, Sitel Corporation signed a contract with Best Buy in 2010 to handle the retailer’s email and chat services with customers nationwide, from a 650-employee operation on Hilltopper Way. “That means 650 families, mostly in Barren County, will be impacted positively by having their family members working for Best Buy,” Iacconi says.

Other recent good economic news includes Factory Connection opening a retail store in Ford Centre Shopping Centre, and Burkes Outlet moving its retail establishment into Barren River Plaza in October 2010. In addition, Applebee’s opened a new restaurant in Glasgow in late 2010, and T.J. Samson Community Hospital has purchased the

former Walmart shopping center in Glasgow and is constructing a T.J. Health Pavilion that will open in late 2012.

Completing the Loop “And to help lure bigger industries, Glasgow/Barren County has a new business/industrial park called Highland Glen, which has an 80,000-square-foot spec building ready to transform into whatever a company needs,” Iacconi says.

“Also, work is diligently proceeding to complete road construction in a key portion of Veterans Outer Loop that will connect to Louie B. Nunn Parkway, which goes right to Interstate 65. That transportation upgrade will complete a large corridor of four-lane highways that access our area.”

Iacconi is quick to admit that existing industry is the backbone of the Glasgow/Barren County economy, yet also points out that additional outside companies are showing interest in locating in the county.

“I’ve been talking to a client interested in agricultural development for Barren County, and another client is looking at biomass and renewable energy projects," he says.

“I’m a big believer in having a more diversified economy because diversification ultimately brings stabilization to a local economy.”

Go, Team, Go Iacconi adds that many organizations work as a team to help bring economic success to Glasgow/Barren County.

He credits Glasgow government officials, Barren County government officials, the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber of Commerce, Barren River Area Development District, South Central Kentucky Regional Economic Development Partnership and even Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

“Also, Tennessee Valley Authority, Farmers Rural Electric and the South Central Rural Telephone Cooperative are important factors in having a strong infrastructure system in place that prospective companies look at,” he says. “A unified team helps us create and portray a positive business climate, which we certainly have in Glasgow/Barren County.”

Chamber Report Chamber keeps active for its 450 members It was 1929 when the GlasgowBarren County Chamber of Commerce first formed, and it is still going strong in 2011. These days, the Chamber serves 450 members and is involved in several community and business efforts.

Shopping Is Hopping The Chamber launched the program Buy Barren First, which encourages

people to buy products as well as support services in the area to help the local economy.

“Nationwide statistics show that for every $100 a person spends in the local economy, $68 stays in the community,” says Ernie Myers, Executive Vice President and COO of the Chamber.

“A dollar then turns five to seven times before leaving the community.”

Feeding Is Believing Barren County is home to many good restaurants, and the Chamber brings several of them together each October for A Taste of Barren County.

“Our Chamber and the Cave City Chamber of Commerce co-host this event to allow the public to sample excellent food prepared by local restaurants and caterers,” says Ann Stewart, Chamber marketing and tourism director.

Lead by Example In 2011, the Leadership GlasgowBarren County program is celebrating its 20th anniversary. A total of 20 to 30 students participate each year in a 10-month program to learn about the community and learn how to become better leaders. Participants might visit a school one month to learn about education, visit city hall another month to see local government in action, then learn about other aspects of GlasgowBarren County in subsequent months.

They Mean Business In February 2011, the Chamber and T.J. Samson Community Hospital hosted a Small Business Expo that was open to everyone throughout Barren County and surrounding communities.

“Actually, we are planning at least two business expos in 2011,” Myers says. “We haven’t hosted expos in several years but with the national economy still struggling, we want to further help our membership in any ways possible – and these business expos will help.”

Youth Be Served Last but certainly not least, Barren County was chosen as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in 2010, as selected by America’s Promise Alliance along with ING financial group. The award recognizes community-wide programs geared toward keeping youth in school and preparing them for college and eventual careers.

economic profile Economic Overview Barren County sits halfway between Louisville, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn. – a central location that provides one-day access to major markets in the Southeast and Midwest. Barren County has historically been a manufacturing center for this region. It has a high concentration of manufacturers and manufacturing employment, with more than 40 companies ranging from 20 to 1,300 employees.

Taxes A state sales tax is levied at the rate of 6% on the purchase or lease price of taxable goods and on utility services. Local sales taxes are not levied in Kentucky. All locally taxed property is subject to county taxes and school district taxes.

Help With Health cmc helps pay for costs Community Medical Care is a charity assisting Barren County’s low-income seniors with prescription medication, prescription glasses and hearing aids. CMC also assists lowincome, working uninsured adults of Barren County by providing primary health care, prescription medication, emergency dental, optometric and hospital care, and specialist consultation.

Assistance is given by CMC, paying 90

percent of the cost of medication up to $250 per quarter for adults, and $200 per month for seniors.

Community Medical Care has been in existence for nine years. Many doctors and pharmacies are involved with the nonprofit group, which recently relocated to a historic building in downtown Glasgow.

Talk About a Good Time Glasgow is jam-packed with cultural attractions

G

lasgow, Ky., is named for Glasgow, Scotland, so it’s only natural that one of the U.S. city’s biggest cultural events is of a Scottish nature. More than 10,000 spectators descend on the Kentucky city the first weekend of June each year for the Glasgow Highland Games, a local tradition since 1986. The festival embraces Scottish culture with bagpipe performances, Celtic dancing and competitive events, including the caber toss, sheepherding, Highland wrestling and haggis tossing.

The Glasgow Highland Games has been named one of the Commonwealth’s top 10 annual festivals by the Kentucky Tourism Council. And that’s only the beginning of the cultural attractions that Glasgow offers.

Glasgow’s South Central Kentucky Cultural Center Get schooled on local history and have fun while you’re learning at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center, a 30,000-square-foot museum packed with fascinating artifacts that tell the story of the people, places and events that make up the Barrens. It is located in the

old Kentucky Pants Factory in downtown Glasgow.

Fort Williams Another place overflowing with history is Fort Williams, the site of a Union Civil War fort that was attacked by Confederate soldiers in October 1863. During the attack, more than 200 horses were captured, part of the fort was burned and 142 men were taken prisoner.

Dinosaur World Glasgow’s Dinosaur World is an unusual place to take the kids that will have them yearning to become paleontologists. The attraction features more than 100 giant dinosaur replicas along a half-mile paved walkway and includes a museum, interactive exhibits, a picnic area, playground and gift shop. Kids can also dig for fossils and watch dinosaur films in an enchanting movie cave.

Plaza Theatre One of Glasgow’s most impressive landmarks is the beautiful Plaza Theatre, which first opened in 1934 and has been meticulously restored. It hosts performances by national acts

such as Pam Tillis and John Conlee, as well as local performers, including the Far Off Broadway Players, an active community theater troupe.

other local events Two events that bring the Glasgow community together and draw lots of visitors year after year are the Glasgow Renaissance-Main Street Cruise Into Fall Car Show and the Roller Coaster Yard Sale.

The car show happens the second Saturday of October in downtown Glasgow and attracts more than 350 cars of all makes and models, including antiques, street rods, motorcycles and tractors.

The Roller Coaster Yard Sale celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010. The 150-mile-long yard sale takes place the first weekend in October, and extends from Cave City into northeastern Tennessee, around Dale Hollow Lake and back to Kentucky. It gets its name from Highway 63, the Cordell Hull Highway, which has lots of curves and dips. Shoppers can find great deals on crafts, antiques and local produce while enjoying spectacular fall foliage.

A Class Act Glasgow-Barren County schools rank among the state’s best

G

lasgow and Barren County’s public schools rank among the best in Kentucky and are one of the top draws for newcomers to the area. The county also offers higher education at the Glasgow Regional Center.

Barren County Public Schools The Barren County School District is one of the fastestgrowing school districts in Kentucky, and enjoys several new facilities. Its 10 schools have a total enrollment of more than 4,500 students and employ 500 staff members. Barren County Schools have been recognized

across the state for their success in academics, athletics and school clubs, and are known for innovative approaches to educating students. In 2004, Barren County Schools created an Internet-based high school curriculum called BAVEL (Barren Academy for Virtual Enhanced Learning) that allows disabled, home-schooled and teen parent students to go online for all course work and earn a diploma.

Glasgow and Caverna Public Schools Glasgow Independent Schools includes six schools with a total

enrollment of about 1,900 students and 300 staff members.

The district is known for academic excellence and belongs to the Kentucky High Performing Districts Alliance, an organization composed of the top 10 school districts in the state (based on CATS scores). Glasgow Independent Schools prides itself on its caring faculty and staff, supportive community, active parent involvement and talented student body.

Caverna Independent Schools is a smaller district based in nearby Cave City and is made up of one elementary, one middle and one high school.

Glasgow Regional Center High school graduates in Barren County don’t have to leave the area to further their education. The Glasgow Regional Center offers four-year and twoyear degrees close to home.

The center is made up of two schools – Western Kentucky University’s Glasgow campus and the Glasgow Technology Campus, an extended campus of Bowling Green Technical College. The two institutions unite on one campus to offer a wide range of undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs, from history and psychology to nursing, business management, HVAC, welding and electricians’ certificates.

The Glasgow Regional Center caters to both traditional and nontraditional students, with flexible programs for working parents, adults pursuing a second career and full-time students. The center even offers college-level courses at local high schools and specialized training programs for business and industry.

Improvements and new construction are set to take place at Glasgow High School in 2011.

Citizens of Glasgow allowed a fivecent tax levy to pass in 2010 to help finance the $20 million that will be needed for the project.

Renovations will be made to the existing gymnasium and vocational education building, while new construction will take place for the remainder of the school.

A Natural Beauty Caves, parks and trails fill County with outdoor adventure

L

ove the great outdoors?

Then you’ll love Barren County. The region is full of outdoor adventures, from caves and caverns just waiting to be explored to parks, swimming pools, lakes, sports complexes and camping areas.

Mammoth Cave National Park Barren County is probably best known among outdoor enthusiasts for Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest surveyed cave with 365-plus miles of mapped passageways. It draws millions of visitors each year with its fascinating formations, vast chambers and sheer size – hence the name Mammoth.

Visitors to Mammoth Cave National Park can embark on their choice of 16 cave tours led by trained guides. The tours range from an Introduction to Caving experience for beginners to the Mammoth Passage Tour, the Historic Tour and the Frozen Niagara Tour.

Diamond Caverns in nearby Park City is another natural

wonder that shows off nature’s sculptures.

Barren County Parks and Trails Another popular attraction is Barren River Lake State Resort Park, which offers 1,500 acres of hiking, cycling, horseback riding, tennis, volleyball, golf, fishing, swimming and more. If you can’t get enough of the park, spend a night or a week camping at its 99-site campground, or book a room at the park’s 51-room Louie B. Nunn Lodge. There are also 22 contemporary cottages equipped with tableware, cooking utensils and linens. At the park’s Driftwood Restaurant, diners enjoy hot meals featuring salmon, trout, crab clusters and juicy burgers.

Walkers and joggers get some exercise on Glasgow’s Renaissance Trail, a 2-mile path through town that highlights historic sites. It connects to the Liberty Street Walking Trail, a paved, lighted, half-mile trail that circles the historic Liberty Street Campus downtown.

The Beaver Trail Softball

Complex is another place to walk or jog on its paved half-mile trail.

A playground and four lighted ballfields are also part of the popular complex. Runners enjoy the rustic nature trail at the 23-acre Weldon Park, which has half-mile and 1-mile lengths.

Weldon Park is also home to a Little League Baseball field, a picnic shelter, playgrounds and public restrooms.

Golf in Barren County Golfers have plenty of courses to choose from in Barren County at affordable rates. Barren River Lake State Resort Park has an 18-hole course that runs along the lake and through the park’s woodlands.

Fox Hollow Golf Club is another 18-hole course that features Bermuda fairways and bent-grass greens. It is owned and operated by the Shipley family, who are longtime golfers. The course incorporates ponds, streams, sand bunkers, wooded areas and natural grass areas.

Popular Glasgow Restaurants If you’re a steak-and-potato type of person, be sure to stop at Colton’s Steak House & Grill, a Glasgow favorite known for excellent steak and rib dinners, savory Caesar salads and homemade yeast rolls. Colton’s also serves a variety of seafood, including fried catfish, mesquitegrilled salmon, pan-seared tilapia, and grilled or fried shrimp.

Tumbleweed Southwest Grill is another local favorite that celebrated 10 years in Glasgow in 2009. Tumbleweed specializes in steaks, ribs, chicken, chops and seafood grilled over a mesquite fire, which infuses a bold Southwest flavor. Also on the menu are burritos seasoned with tangy chiles, a mesquite bison burger, sizzling fajitas and everyone’s favorite, Chile Con Queso dip.

At A Little Taste of Texas Cafe, you might think you’ve been transported to the Lone Star State. The family-owned café serves a killer Breast of Chicken Monterey topped with sautéed onions, mushrooms and white cheese served with cowboy beans, rice and jalapeno sweetbread. Another popular menu item is the Lone Star Barbecue Plate, with lots of sweet, spicy pork barbecue piled on a bun. Be sure to save room for homemade blackberry or pecan cobbler a la mode for dessert.

Other local favorites include Driftwood Restaurant at Barren River State Park, Los Mariachis Mexican Restaurant and Garcia’s Grill.

Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market Nothing beats fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, and they are easy to find in Glasgow.

The Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market opened in downtown Glasgow in summer 2009 and welcomes visitors every Saturday during warm-weather months. It gives more than two dozen local farmers the opportunity to sell

their goods in the Courthouse lawn on the west side of the downtown square.

Shoppers can purchase baked goods, local honey, eggs, meats, cheese from Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese, fruit from Jackson’s Orchard and hydroponic vegetables, such as tomatoes and lettuce, from Trigg Enterprises.

Along with all the tasty edibles, the farmers market features live music by local musicians and cooking demonstrations by area chefs.

In December, the market opens for one day to offer meats, eggs, honey and handmade crafts for the holidays.

On my last day in Barren County, I stumbled across a gem of a thoroughfare. Jack Brown Road is somewhere off 31E, but it was complete luck that led me to it.

I was heading into Glasgow when the line of cars I was in came to a stop. There was a traffic jam. A traffic jam at 7 a.m. on a rural road? I took the first exit I could and figured I could make my way into town via a back way.

In doing so, I found myself on Jack Brown Road.

Cresting a hill, I saw the hay bales and fence post depicted in the photo. I really like the minimal amount of fall color in this photo and the way the color is complemented by the warmtoned grass under the hay bales.
