ecently Narendra Modi, Prime Minister-India interacted with Bill Gates and suggested that the Gates Foundation could take the lead in analysing the necessary changes in lifestyles, economic organisation, social behaviour, modes of disseminating education and healthcare that would emerge in the post-Covid-19 world and the associated technological challenges that would need to be addressed. He said that India would be happy to contribute to such an analytical exercise based on its own experiences.

This is to understand amid Covid-19 lockdown. What PM India is thinking for the post Covid-19 era? Where the direction and wind is blowing! De facto this is the critical time for every government and policymakers that to lead their nation in very precise manner. There is no room for policy mistake amid, lower charting trade & geopolitical tensions!

Here government is focussing on ve points, 1: Economy, 2: Infrastructure, 3: System, 4: Vibrant Demography and 5: Demand. This aim to promote a culture of entrepreneurship among India’s youth and inspire them to set-up their own enterprises and create employment opportunities for others!

2: Now a day, Nirmala Sitharaman is announcing huge big Economic Package of Rs20trillion! About 10% of GDP India, package is a clear and concise with the precision of direction that New India is raising in town & villages of India! This is the road to make every village Self-Reliant, every town a Self-Reliant with its’ own economic power & growth! One village one skill theory is opening though FM has cited one product one state so far!

I think whole of the centralised economy India around the fewer cities is shifting and de centralising to nd every town & villages!

Bottom Line: We have learnt enough during the coronavirus lockdown through trade centric various Webinar & reading. It is true that, 1: sanitation and customer care with hygiene would be the important with the hygiene & sanitation of staff. 2: Adopt and stay abreast digitisation and 3: manage a wider supply line! Because, the impact of coronavirus is likely to lasts for ve years!

Uddhav Thackeray allows GJ export operations

M

aharashtra State Chief Minister Shri Uddhav Thackeray yesterday in his meeting with the cabinet ministers approved an important appeal made by the gems and jewellery exports fraternity to start operations in Mumbai. The State CM approved operations of designated gems and jewellery export units at Bharat Diamond Bourse and SEEPZ, which are India’s largest and world’s renowned jewellery export zones.

The government however allowed the operations of these jewellery export units with only 10 percent of workforce for fulfilling of import and export obligations during the lockdown period. Also the State government have given instructions to arrange for safe and hygienic work environment for the workforce, including their safe travel to and fro from their house to their workshop’s or manufacturing units.

This landmark decision by the government of Maharashtra has brought relief to thousands of diamond, gems and jewellery exporters in BDB and SEEPZ in Mumbai.

This will be a significant move for the gems and jewellery export operations to commence in Mumbai as the city houses Bharat Diamond Bourse and SEEPZ, two of India’s largest jewellery export designated zones. Also, it is believed that Bharat Diamond Bourse have received export interest applications from the members worth $550Mn from 1673 consignment parcels and SEEPZ is expected to export $10Mn worth of diamond from 50 units.

I also thank the Ministry of Commerce; The Ministry of Finance and Customs department for working relentlessly to gear-up G&J exports amidst COVID-19 lockdown.”

ecently at the Webinar Vice Chairman GJEPC India Colin Shah agreed upon the fact that the gem & jewellery export fraternity is looking for bank facilities. He said, GJEPC is communicating with RBI to clarify all those related banks to announce related package!

Further, Colin Shah said, GJEPC India is also looking for the package for export fraternity from government.

No doubt, GJEPC is working in the sync with Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Swiftly communication is going on and looking at all those aspects to boost exports at post Covid-19 era.

It is to know that India has halted the rough diamond import in the meantime from May 15 & up to one month!

Such measures had been taken earlier at the global turmoil 2008. In the row, RJC had also viewed that the gem & jewellery industry recovery will need government support!

Thousands of gems and jewellery exporters in Mumbai took a breath of relief, as the government of Maharashtra in a landmark decision, allowed designated export units of diamond and jewellery to begin their operations in Mumbai.

However, considering the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the government has allowed only 10 percent of workforce can operate in these jewellery export units and also transport of the employees will be the responsibility of the employer during the lockdown period.

Mr. Pramod Kumar Agrawal, Chairman, GJEPC said, “We are thankful to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the administrative departments for allowing gems and jewellery export operations from Mumbai with 10 percent workforce during the lockdown period. Surat and Jaipur have already started exports of gems and jewellery.

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, along with other trade bodies have been pursuing the State and Central Government to make all the major gem and jewellery centres operational across India to clear the backlog of orders from the prelockdown period.

MoC & I gears up: Mr. Colin Shah, Vice Chairman, GJEPC said, “It has been a collective effort from all the stakeholders that has helped us start gem & jewellery exports.

As always there has been a tremendous support from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

The Customs department has remained open during the ongoing lockdown and ofcials have bravely come forward to ensure exports to take place. Both the Ministry of Commerce and Customs department worked relentlessly for the gems and jewellery exports and we as an industry thank them for their constant support.

As a result, cancellation of orders got minimised from Mumbai SEEPZ, Surat Diamond Bourse and Jaipur.”

fraternity are thankful to the support extended by MOC & I, Department of Commerce and State Governments across the centres. Customs at each Centre of Mumbai, Surat, Jaipur and Delhi have been providing continued assistance and backing the trade in clearing parcels both at Import and Export.

It is expected that the Indian gem and jewellery industry will be gaining back its momentum slowly by strictly adhering to the Covid-19 safety guidelines set up by Government.

Vibrant Zone: Jaipur is another important centre for gem and jewellery wherein on an average daily 7-8 shipments are taking place from ACC, Jaipur (DTA). Till date 40 units in SEZ, Sitapura and 25 units in gems & jewellery zone of EPIP, Sitapura has commenced their production.

DTA has cleared 185 shipments of value Rs 22,87,79,565/- and from SEZ, 42 shipments of value Rs. 8,81,05,254/- were cleared till May 9th .

Exporters are using the parcel services of logistics companies to send consignments as it is cheaper than booking directly on cargo ights following an increase in air freight rates.

The parcel sizes are also smaller compared with usual times, as the output of factories has come down as the factories have not started in full strength.

“Exports of gold, silver and imitation jewellery has started. Exports of studded jewellery will also

begin soon,” added Agrawal.

At Surat SEZ, operations of G&J units commenced post 27th April, 2020 with First export of G&J commodity taking place on 5th May. 8 units started their operations in Special Notied Zone, Sachin, Surat and 2 export shipments worth Rs. 109.12 Lakh was cleared in rst week of May, 2020. ACC, Ahmedabad has cleared 10 shipments in the month of April, 2020 worth Rs. 18.8 lakhs.

Surat Hira Bourse is facilitating exporters in clearance of shipments and exports to Hong Kong have been possible from Mumbai airport with direct ight/cargo connection. 5 units in Gem & Jewellery Park, IchhaporeSurat have started operations with minimum strength of the staff.

From Delhi Port, 1 consignment export of gold jewellery commenced on Tuesday and few silver jewellery exports are in pipeline. Noida SEZ is operational.

India halts rough Diamond import for a month!

Halt from May 15, 2020: Recently diamond industry urged to all members to cease voluntarily import of Rough Diamonds for one month from May 15, 2020. In a jointly sign appeal to diamond fraternity India key signatories are Anoop Mehta, PresidentBharat Diamond Bourse, Pramod Kumar Agrawal, Chairman-GJEPC, Babubhai Kathiriya Chhodvdi, President-Surat Diamond Association, Mahendra V. Gandhi, President-The Mumbai Diamond Merchants Association and Vallabhbhai Patel, President-Surat Diamond Bourse.

The join appeal said, as you are aware, the Covid-19 pandemic situation is having 28-LEAD RESUMPTION

an unprecedented impact on the global economy. Various countries across the world have declared lockdowns, and, by and large these countries have temporarily closed their economies.

In order to ght this pandemic situation, India has initially declared a lockdown for 21 days, which has been extended for another 19 days.

Various countries and different departments/ authorities of the Government of India have recognized and declared Covid-19 pandemic as a ‘Force Majeure’ event.

With these lockdowns, and various administrative actions including travel bans, etc. imports and exports of various products have been tremendously impacted.

The Covid-19 pandemic is also

having a huge impact on our industry, and, there has been a serious strain on the companies throughout the diamond value chain. In the process of monitoring the situation & on responding to the plea from the members the GJEPC, we had several meetings of the top member exporters and local members of Committee of Administration of the GJEPC to discuss the current market scenario and possible steps that can be taken by the Members in consequence of the unprecedented issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, for strengthening the diamond industry.

Review in June: Subsequently Vice Chairman and Convener (DPC) on behalf of GJEPC and BDB, SDB, SDA & MDMA have done consultation meetings with prominent members of trade in India and the world. Based on the opinion received from such consultation and the decision taken after that in the Diamond Panel Committee of GJEPC and the four diamond associations, GJEPC has written a note to the Hon’ble Commerce Minister, Commerce Secretary, Economic Advisor and other Government ofcials and apprised them of JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

“I see a big impact of Covid-19 to our economy, business and personal life. There will be an immense change; people will become more conscious about their health & hygiene system.

They will adopt new style of business by making more use of technology and digital world.”

COVID 19 crisis which has called for urgent measures so that the industry may survive during this critical period.

In order to protect the interest of the industry at large during this current crisis, the need for urgent measures to be taken was discussed in the meeting and it was suggested that the individual members may consider the option of curtailing their import of rough Diamonds from 15th May 2020 at least for the next 30 days. It was assessed that such import stoppage will help the industry face the challenge that has arisen out of turmoil in the global gems and jewellery market.

On one hand this move will send a signal to the banking system that the diamond industry will not increase its indebtedness at the time when our downstream colleagues continue to meet consumer demand so that the bankers feel reassured & do not reduce the credit exposure to the industry. On the other hand this move will basically cause fewer roughs to enter the diamond pipeline and the producer companies will thus face lesser strain and indirectly share in the nancing burden and JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

WFDB launches YDs website!

he World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) is excited to announce the launch of its Young Diamantaires (YDs) website www.ydts.org. The organization has worked for the past four years with young members of the diamond community all over the world to create a platform through which they can express their thoughts, opinions and views in a safe and constructive manner.

The website itself was physically built by the members for the members. It is in its rst iteration and there are plans to expand its functionality. Rami Baron, Chairman of the Promotion Committee of the WFDB and founder of the Young Diamantaires describes the four pillars as the foundation from which the group will grow: 1. Department of Commerce has provided a number of Relaxations /Extensions of various Compliance Deadlines etc to address Corona Pandemic Related Hardships of Exporters!

n order to give relief to businesses and affected individuals amidst the stress caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced several relaxations and extensions in deadlines etc. with regard to compliances mandated under its schemes and activities.

The key relaxations pertaining to the Department of Commerce are as follows, A. Facilitation under Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2015-20 by DGFT,

Alrosa offers greater exibility To long-term customers!

A

lrosa takes further action to support long-term customers amid global market uncertainty, said Alrosa.

Since the beginning of this year, Alrosa has been taking consistent steps to improve trading exibility. By the start of its trading session in March, the mandatory amount of rough diamonds required to be bought had been lowered from 55% to 50%.

In a stable market environment, for comparison, Alrosa usually sets this at 80% level, as was the case in 2018. Until mid-2019, it was 70%. Given the current

market developments, the Company has decided that, starting this week, it will let customers off take 40% of the initially contracted volume and carry the remaining part over to the end of May 2020.

Global gold demand in Q1 up by 1% Q1 global gold demand remained of 1,083.8t

lobal gold demand held rm at 1,083.8t in Q1 2020, a rise of 1% on the same period last year, according to the World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report. The global Covid-19 pandemic fuelled safe-haven investment demand for gold with gold-backed ETFs and it is attracting huge inows (+298t) to push global holdings in these products to a record high of 3,185t.

Holdings of gold-backed ETFs reached a record high of 3,185t by the end of Q1.

Sharp investment inows helped push the US dollar gold price to an eight-year high. Consequently, demand in value terms reached US$55bn – the highest since Q2 2013. The gold price reached a new record high in Indian rupees and Turkish lira, among others. The pandemic slashed jewellery demand as global governments imposed lockdown measures. Demand fell to previously unseen lows, led by a 65% decline in China – the largest jewellery consumer and the rst market to succumb to the outbreak.

Gold demand will continue to feel the effects of COVID-19 for the rest of 2020. In particular, the divergence between investment in goldbacked ETFs and consumers via jewellery will likely continue until there is greater economic and market certainty.”

The key ndings included in the Gold Demand Trends Q1 2020 report are as, 1: Overall demand grew in Q1 by 1% year-on-year to 1,083.8t, 2: Total investment demand increased by 80% year-onyear to 539.6t, 2: Total consumer demand decreased by 28% from 791t in Q1 2019 to 567.4t in Q1, 4: Global jewellery demand fell by 39% to a record low of 325.8t.

5: Central banks net buying fell by 8% year-on-year to 145t, 6: Bar demand weakened to 150.4t, a year-on-year decline of 19%. 7: Demand in the technology sector fell 8% to a new low of 73.4t & 8: Total supply dropped by 4% year-onyear.

orld Gold Council (WGC) released, India Demand Statistics for Q1 2020- for the period of January to March 2020. Highlight of the report says for Gold demand full year that, 1: Demand for gold in India for Q1 2020 was at 101.9 tonnes down by 36% as compared to overall Q1 demand for 2019 (159 tonnes).

2: India’s Q1 2020 gold demand value was Rs 37,580 crores, a drop of 20% in comparison with Q1 2019

Director, India, WGC said, “Indian gold demand in Q1, 2020 dropped 36% to 101.9 tonnes due to a combination of factors such as high and volatile prices, economic uncertainties and towards end of the quarter, severe logistical freeze following lockdown.

Investment demand, though lower by 17% at 28.1 tonnes, was relatively better as sentiments towards equities turned negative and investors

(Rs 47,000 crores), 3: Total Jewellery demand in India for Q1 2020 was down by 41% at 73.9 tonnes as compared to Q1 2019 (125.4 tonnes).

In that scenario, it is possible that gold becomes a tool for revival of many SME businesses and household fortunes. This perhaps presents an opportunity that could revive GMS (Gold Monetisation Scheme) in a consumer- friendly manner. Consumer sentiment could receive a boost with the arrival of a normal monsoon as predicted by IMD. Issues of integrity of gold and right price will receive greater consumer attention as gold prices test affordability. A digital transformation of the industry could be a positive outcome of the current crisis, as social distancing, contactless payments and other behavioural necessities challenge earlier forms of consumer engagement.

hen the Animalier collection was created in the early 1980s, it exploded just like all of Italy was exploding, in a period of creative urry, full of opportunities. It was the moment to be bold! Those were the years in which fashion was telling stories about the world and faraway places using fabric; why couldn’t jewelry do the same using gold? This was the challenge that Roberto Coin decided to accept.

Since then, Roberto Coin can often be seen at the door of his atelier, just back from one of his trips, carrying sketches of the animals that inspired him the most: from familiar barnyard animals to exotic beasts. J

ohn-Mikaël Flaux is a young watchmaker specialized in the art of mechanics. Based in the French city of Besançon – a town known for French horology - he is a watchmaker candidate for the famous AHCI in Switzerland.

His speciality aims to reinterpret this sector by giving it a poetical and extravagant dimension: The Guêpe (with its wasp-shaped mechanism), Car Clock and Time Fury P18 (watches in the shape of racing cars) and the automatic Duello (ght between 2 mechanical swordsmen), for example.

Flaux graduated at the Edgard Faure School (the best French horology school) and

came rst in the national «Un des meilleurs apprentis de France» competition as the best apprentice.

In 2012, he was spotted by Swiss producer Ulysse-Nardin and became a watchmaker in the department of great complications. In 2014 he created “The Wasp”, a mechanism in the shape of the insect and, since then, he has

been the brand’s watchmakercreator. He is also responsible for the Super-Catamaran table clock inspired by offshore regatta boats presented at Basel in 2016.

He left Ulysse-Nardin in 2017 to set up his own workshop in France and to ofcially become an independent watchmaker.
