25 Year Anniversary Celebration in May 2010 Rudi and Joanne Kutter established Kutter Harley-Davidson Inc. in 1985 when they gave up individual careers to realize a dream built on service, quality and integrity.

Early on, Kutter Harley-Davidson & Buell began as a storefront operation under the water tower in Delavan, WI. Tech Tips: Clean, Polish & Preserve Kory Atlas, Service Manager Lake Shore Harley-Davidson

With the snow and winter fading into our memories, we pull our bikes out of hibernation to realize how bad we need to clean them.

Even though it was covered and stored correctly there is the want for your pride and joy to be flawless that first time out. It’s more fun riding a clean shiny bike. Done right it will look good for a long time, incorrectly done it can make it worse.

The first thing is to wash the bike to remove dust and debris from the surface. Use only quality wash soap designed for your car or motorcycle. Do not use dish soap or other stuff not made for painted surfaces. Dish soaps and aggressive detergents will ruin your paint by removing resins from the paint or will strip the wax off your finish.

Get your bike nice and wet with warm water if it’s available, and then follow with a soapy wash with a wash mitt or soft cotton towel. Then rinse, when you rinse try not to concentrate on the wheel hubs or bearing areas or electronics. If your engine needs a quick clean, use a soft brush and soapy water. Same goes for your wheels. If your wheels need more, use a cleaner that is non-acid based. Acid based cleaners can ruin your rims.

Let’s move on to drying. You can use an air blower made for drying your bike, a chamois or micro fiber towel. Whatever you choose it should be soft and debris free, so it will not scratch anything.

With everything dry let’s look at your paint. If there are swirls or light marks use a swirl or scratch remover polish on these areas. If the paint is nice use a non-abrasive carnauba wax with a proper applicator and remove with a micro fiber towel. Always wax out of direct sunlight and make sure the surface is not hot.

To polish chrome and aluminum parts use a polish and protectant designed for chrome or aluminum. There are many companies that offer polishes for aluminum. Some are capable of making aluminum as shiny as chrome. After polishing your aluminum parts protect them from oxidizing again with wax or a protectant for aluminum. Different chrome polishes vary on how aggressive they are. You should read the labels on all products to make sure they are what you need.

One quick point that is very important is never use ArmorAll or similar products on your tires, grips or seat. These products are slippery. You don’t want slippery tires, seats or grips!

I know many riders that avoid group riding because of unfavorable experiences they have had when riding with a group.

As a professional motorcycle tour guide, safe group riding is something I have to deal with every time I lead one of my tours. Prior to the start of every tour we have a safety briefing where we cover all aspects of group riding such as; motorcycle spacing, riding speed, hand signals, parking at stops, road conditions and the day’s itinerary.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (www.msf-usa.org) has a great “Guide to Group Ride” brochure that can be downloaded from their website. I use this guide as a starting point in my safety briefing but I also cover expected road or weather conditions, the day’s route and stopping points for breaks and lunch. As a tour leader it is important to know what intervals between gas stops need to be maintained. I will ask all the riders when they need to stop and plan fuel stops based on the shortest interval. Riders tend to get nervous, and rightly so, if they believe they may run out of gas. When they are nervous and thinking about getting gas they tend not to think about safe riding and that can spell trouble.

It is also important that everyone know the route in case they get separated from the group. I give everyone a route sheet and/or GPS file but my policy is to stop and wait for the group to catch up. We have all seen people run red lights trying to keep from losing the group. Also, I let everyone know that we will pull over at a safe spot and wait for the group to reassemble.

I often hear from many riders, that they avoid group riding because of riders in the group that drink. On my tours I have a strict no drinking policy; you drink you are gone and I do not refund your money. I like a drink as much as the next person, but I do believe that riding a motorcycle and drinking should not be mixed.

Riding as a group can actually be safer than riding alone, if proper group riding methods are used. As a rider in a group make sure you show up with a full tank and follow the directions of the group leader. If you do not understand something or have additional questions ask them.

Finally, I have a group riding presentation that I offer to Clubs and Organizations for their members or road captains free of charge.

Spring must be on its way. The snow around the neighborhood has started to melt at an increasingly shocking pace. The International Motorcycle Show, which we so looked forward to in November, has passed and everyone keeps commenting how they’re itching to ride. Yup, spring must be close by. Yesterday, the sun was bright and the temperature was much warmer than it’s been for months around Chicago, and a lot of friends were commenting how they were looking forward to the forecasted rain, to wash the residual salt from the roads and avoid having the dust eat away at the metallic finishes on their bikes.

I can understand that urge clearly. There is a trigger that goes off in my head as soon as the International Motorcycle Show comes to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois every February. Up to that point, I would mention to folks, how I couldn’t wait for the riding season to arrive. In fact, it was more of a half hearted comment than how I would feel while attending the show or immediately after its passing. At that time I become like a smoker that’s been forced to go cold turkey and forgot to apply their nicotine patch for four months!

That’s the time where I need to go to the garage to work on the bikes even though a real ride may be weeks away. My wife looks upon this ritual, shaking her head in disbelief, but she’s come to understand that at this time of the year this kind of behavior is expected.

There’s no avoiding it, the time has come to get ready to ride. That means you need to prepare yourself as much just as you prepared your bike for winter storage. Getting it ready for the riding season by changing the fluids, checking your tires for dry rot and adjusting for proper pressure. What’s meant by that is that you need to get your riding skills that have been dormant for most of the winter season ready to go for the coming saddle time.

We tend to think that because we’ve ridden for years, there’s nothing I need to do other than remove the bike cover, fill up the tank with fuel and hit the road. Oh, no my friends, that couldn’t be further from the truth. You would benefit in spades if you take a couple of pre-emptive steps to kicking off the season, like signing up for several riding schools offered

by MSF; Motorcycle Safety Foundation, http://www.msf-usa.org/ and/or other reputable local enterprises. Schools like MSF’s beginner and experienced riders clinics, ICS (Illinois Council of Safety) http://www.illinoiscouncilofsafety.org/index.html, various riders and ladies only clinics, Chicago’s Motorcycle Riding School, http://www.motorcyclelearning.com/ and many others. I’ve attended some of these clinics at the beginning of the season to brush up on my skills and persuade many members of our club; DRILL – Ducati Riders of Illinois to attend. In the same way that you would warm up before hitting the diamond for a baseball game or the grid-iron for a football game, it’s wise to wake up those muscles and skills that have been dormant for months.

The reason I attend is that every year I learn something new about a skill I was lacking, which I thought was already flawless. You can’t see yourself the way a knowledgeable instructor can see what you’re doing wrong or right and offer some critique or praise to improve your riding skills. Early in the season we tend to be over taken by the intoxicating spring weather and become a bit relaxed. This is the perfect environment for a careless auto or truck pilot to perhaps put us in a compromised situation because of our relaxed state.

What many of these clinics teach us is not only to be better riders in general, but to react in the presence of a dangerous environment. Have you ever found yourself in a situation on your bike where a car or truck veered into your path? Instead of reacting by taking a quick change in direction, you froze and locked up your front tire and hopefully were able to ride away from it without harm to you or your bike. I have done that too, and thankfully the classes I have taken have given me the skills to react with the proper response. The nice thing about these classes is that the drills they practice are done at low speed. That will become routine as the speed increases on the road and highway once you’ve completed the school.

Another advantage is that most are relatively inexpensive; MSF only requires that you make a minimum donation to their foundation. What’s most important is what you learn in a day with the instructors and other riders allowing you to be much better prepared for what you may encounter on a day’s ride and get you home safely to do it again another day.

Throughout the year we hear about many of our fellow riders that are injured or killed by careless drivers or even their own lack of experience that put them in increasingly dangerous situations. Two years ago at an MSF class at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn one rider attended the MSF experienced rider class on a custom chopper! It was one of the most impressive motorcycling sights I have ever experienced. It doesn’t matter what you ride, full dresser, chopper, touring rig, sport bike. You can benefit by preparing yourself and your bike for the riding season not only mechanically but physically and mentally also. Even if you feel that you’re too talented to benefit from a day at one of the many riding schools, please consider taking one if even for argument sake. I guarantee you will be glad you did and leave the school stronger and more prepared for what the roads ahead have to offer. Be safe and I’ll see you on the road.

Safety Feature

Controlling the Motorcycle – Clutch, Throttle and Rear Brake By Robert Shelton, Instructor Woodstock Harley Riding School Spring is here! I am sure all of you reading this are itching to bring your motorcycle out of storage and get the rubber on the road! This brings up something for consideration. How well are you going to ride this year? Are you going to soak up every mile with the intense passion of freedom? Are you going to know that no matter where you go this season you’ll be in complete control of your motorcycle no matter what size of the rally, crowd, parking lot, or type of road, be it gravel, grass, mud or concrete? My friend, it is up to you as to how well you ride this year.

Let’s discuss an important technique for controlling your motorcycle at slow speeds – between 3 and 12 mph. This important technique is the use of the clutch, throttle and rear brake while riding slow. How important is this technique? It is this control technique that will bring joy and confidence when having to ride in gravel, grass, dirt, asphalt, mud or concrete at slow speeds knowing that you have control of your motorcycle no matter what it’s size, model, or weight. It is this control technique that I use when at gas stations, restaurants, dealerships, horse shows, motorcycle rallies (BIG Border Rally, Sturgis, Laconia, Daytona, etc.), and dealing with parking and getting through crowded main street areas. Let’s see what this technique entails.

When you operate your clutch lever there is a point at which the clutch is fully disengaged. This is when your clutch lever is fully squeezed in and touching your handlebar grip. There is also a point at which the clutch is fully engaged. This is when your clutch lever is fully let out from your handlebar grip. There is an area when the clutch lever is fully squeezed that when you begin to let the lever out the clutch will begin to engage or slip. From this point the clutch will begin to slip with more and more friction until it is fully engaged – this is called the “Friction Zone.” When the friction starts there is a slight pull on the rear wheel and as this friction increases the pull on the rear wheel increases as well.

When riding or maneuvering your motorcycle at slow speed your clutch lever will be in this friction zone.

While operating the motorcycle at slow speed in the friction zone with a bit of pressure applied to the rear brake and applying a bit of throttle you will exercise maximum control of your motorcycle. This also is what enables you to ride at a slow speed and maintain the motorcycle in an upright position. When I am in the friction zone using the throttle and rear brake at slow speed my RPMs are between 1200 and 1500. At no time is the front brake used in this technique. Practice using this technique in an empty parking lot going in a straight line. Work to have your speed at the pace of a fast walk and try to slow it down to a regular walk.

When properly practiced the motorcycle will work to stay upright because of a principle of physics – torque on the rear wheel. At slow speed the motorcycle will automatically work to straighten upright when torque is applied to the rear wheel and held back with the rear brake.

When you become proficient at riding in a straight line at slow speed, work at turning your motorcycle in a large circle in both directions. When you become comfortable with circles take three or four parking slots and work at making large “U” turns. Work on making large figure 8 using a large area. Learn to maneuver your motorcycle. As you become comfortable controlling your motorcycle with this technique, tighten up the space. After practicing for a bit I suggest you ride your motorcycle around and “air” out and cool off your brakes and clutch.

This technique has to be practiced, practiced and further practiced. Should you decide to take a riding course make sure this technique is part of curriculum and used throughout the course. Every rider on the road should be well grounded using this control technique.

Featured Rider: A Biker For Jesus

I was twelve years old when I talked my dad into a 1960 Cushman Deluxe with a kick start. I had it for less than a week when I crashed it on a dirt road behind our house, landed flat on my face, breaking my left wrist and giving myself a bloody nose. Despite all that my mother let me keep it.

Next came a Briggstone 90 mountain bike. By that time the headlight was smashed, the bike was all banged up from trying to jump things, and the kick start was broken off. I drove to the dealership lying flat in the back of the truck in hopes of trading it in. My guess is that the dealer was a biker too as I could tell by the expression on his face; he appreciated just how much fun that bike had been for me. So I wasn’t offended when he suggested the junk yard for parts.

Next came four years in the Navy and my search for the legendary “1943 Harley-Davidson military motorcycle still in the crate.” This was back in 1973 and there were still rumors that such a thing existed in the city of Manila in the Philippines. So while in port at Subic Bay I traveled to Manila several times in search of the prize. (big sigh) As you can guess I never found the bike. So I finished my tour and came home.

The first thing I did was to go looking for a motorcycle. I found a custom built 1968 Harley-Davidson 900 with a stroker kit. It was fast and loud with “easy rider” sway back handlebars and an orange and “black lace print” custom gas tank. Since it had no electric starter my right leg always got a good workout. If you did anything more than just jiggle the throttle it flooded. It was a love / hate relationship that most bikers have known at some time in their life. The bike eventually burned a hole in the cylinder head and I parked it in a rented storage space. Where I lost it to overdue back rent.(another big sigh) Twelve years later I was a student minister looking for cheap transportation.

One of the people from the church gave me a Honda 500 touring bike. I rode it for seven years until the internal generator went bad.

A few years later an old friend heard I was without a ride and gave me the bike I’m riding now a 1983 750 Honda. The next riding season I decided to hold my first “Blessing of the Bikes” and started to make plans. The day before the event I road my bike to a Saturday morning prayer meeting a few towns away. I left that place feeling great and excited about the Bike Blessing the next day. As I was heading home, a car passed me on the right going pretty fast. They evidently needed gas and spotted the gas station to my left and pulled in front of me and locked up their brakes. Before I could even touch the brake pedal I had smashed into the back of their car. I flew

off the bike and I traveled along the right side of the car taking out their rear view mirror with my knees. That caused my body to flip up and over and I landed on my back in the middle of the right lane about ten feet ahead of the car. I still have the helmet with gashes in the back of it from where it bounced off the blacktop. I’m not quite sure what it would have done to my head if I had not been wearing a helmet.

One of the people from my town just happened to be coming the other direction when it happened. He said he saw me flying through the air and landing on the pavement. Lucky for me I was wearing combat boots and had all exposed areas covered so there was no road rash. (Although my knees will never be the same.) The impact with the trunk flattened the gas tank and broke the frame. Basically the front end was all destroyed. And from that experience I’ve been known ever since as “The Flying Pastor.”

With the help of a friend, we welded the frame back together and started working on the bike as I had the money to buy the parts. God bless my biker friend, the day I walked into his shop trading woodworking equipment for the parts for my bike I didn’t have the money to buy, good old George just laughed at me and gave me the remaining parts I needed to get me back on the road.

I’m still riding that bike to this day. In fact when the American Legion Riders held their car and motorcycle show last year with all the dings and scrapes and marks which give the bike its unique character. Everyone voted for their favorite bikes and I had won a prize for the “People’s Choice” award. Come to our Blessing of the Bikes this year you can see my motorcycle and the trophy I won. Blessing of the Bikes is Sunday, June 13th, 2010 at City Park on Route 26 in Forreston, Illinois from 5:30 pm -7:30 pm. Tim Adkins owner of Carpets 4U in Wauconda, Illinois reluctantly walked into the 21st century last summer and teamed up with Susie Kleiner, “The Web Designer” to build a website for Carpets 4U, in a short amount of time, Tim saw the results that an online presence can have for small business owners.

On her way back from Colorado, Vicki Sanfelipo decided to push herself and her 2005 Street Glide to the limit by doing an Iron Butt Challenge in August, 2009. As she viewed beautiful vistas and then golden fields of wheat navigating through America’s heartland, she suddenly realized that the freedom she was enjoying was secured by the sacrifices of our military men and women over the years. At that moment a seed was sown that would germinate into a mission of gratitude from her heart.

Vicki participated in the AMA’s women’s motorcycle event in Colorado and there she met some exceptional ladies who would become her friends and sisters in a cause. The cause she was drawn to was The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, a great need arose to help families who lost loved ones in Afghanistan and Iraq and eventually help for our wounded warriors. In 2007, the Center for the Intrepid was built in San Antonio, Texas, and it serves cata32

strophically disabled military personnel who were wounded in battle. It’s an amazing facility doing amazing work and Vicki wanted to raise awareness and cash for the Center. This was the birth of the Diamond Posse.

The exceptional women Vicki has recruited for this mission have all undergone hardships in their lives. They were forged under pressure, just like diamonds, to become stronger and more beautiful: thus the Diamond Posse. The Mission: Vicki is being joined by Eldonna Lewis Fernandez, MSgt USAF Retired, Cat Hammes, the one legged Blonde, Amy Skaling, aka Diva Amy and Roberta Carlson, Director of

Journey of the Diamond Posse Military Services Safety Training for Cape Fox. They will start their epic ride at the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, and visit VA medical centers in Dallas, Muskogee, Oklahoma, Kansas City, Missouri and Iowa City, Iowa. They want to meet some of our fallen heroes and bring them encouragement and gratitude while they are on the path to recovery.

The Posse will return to Wisconsin on May 21, 2010 and join the ride to LZ Lambeau, a giant welcome and thank you to Wisconsin’s Viet Nam Veterans.

From there, they ride to Milwaukee to join the Harley-Davidson Women’s Celebration at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

Later that evening, there will be a reception for the Diamond Posse at the Iron Horse Ho-

tel, just south of the HD Museum. It is hoped that some of the patients from the VA Zablocki Medical Center can come out to that reception.

There’s a BikerSpot located in central Illinois that is fast becoming a biker attraction to visit for many bikers. Operating out of a building that has housed different biker bars in the past, Go-T’s bar (pronounced “go teez”) is a spot recommended by many local riders in the area. Go-T’s opened in March 2008 by Rob & LaDonna Kelleher, at 3201 NE Adams St, just north of downtown Peoria, Illinois. The bar has the classic biker feel the moment you ride up and park your bike on the street near the front door. With bikes coming and bikes going, there is always a certain feel of excitement upon your arrival or departure.

Upon entering Go-T’s you first notice a large island bar circling the inner part of the building allowing easy access to get your favorite beverage and mingling with good friends from all sides. On one side of the bar, they have 2 - 50” flat screen TV’s to watch shows, enjoy a picture slide show displaying fun times at Go-T’s, future motorcycle events, and their food menu. Adding to the decorum, the bar has 2 dance poles at the corners of the bar used regularly by customers who get into the moment. Also, the walls and ceiling are scattered with motorcycle parts and accessories, giving you the feeling that you’re visiting a little motorcycle museum. They have Harley fenders that were custom fabricated into lamps hanging over tables complete with running lights (very cool lamps).

The entertainment at Go-T’s varies on the time of the year and the night of the week. Every Thursday night they have Open Jam night with a host band “to jam it up”. If you can jam, jump in and play in the band. Starting April 6 and running thru September 30, Go-T’s kicks it with Bike Nights every Tuesday and Thursday. And their specialty night is the last Friday night of the month April thru September. This is their legendary night ride called the Unfriendly Run. You’ll need to show up to find out where the ride goes, and it’s the most fun unfriendly run you’ll ever ride!

“Biker Billy Cooks with Fire” Thanks for the Birds By the time you read this, April will have arrived at last, coming as it always does a mere dozen days after spring. Both will be sorely welcomed by this weary biker, tired as I have been of Old Man Winter lo these many months. On the official calendar of all things motorcycling, by April the riding season is technically a month old since Daytona Bike Week launched it the first week of March.

While April is still a month distant as I write this, I have had little hope of an early spring riding season, due to what has been the coldest, snowiest winter that I have experienced since moving to the mountains of North Carolina. I hate snow and winter!

Then, this morning, I had a change of heart and a new perspective. As I gazed out my window, looking out over my cup of strong black coffee to the snow-covered mountaintops in the distance, I thought I saw something move in the yard. It was small and darkish, not one of the black, white, and grey furred dogs that had just been let out for their morning constitutional.

I lowered my cup and carefully scanned the yard, hoping perhaps for an errant squirrel near the bird feeders that was about to be chased to the fence by my furry friends. Oh, how the dogs love to chase the alwayselusive squirrels, and I love to watch the excitement of the hunt, though so far the squirrels have always been a tail hair ahead of certain doom. Then I spotted him.

There in our late-winter yard that had been snow covered only a few days ago was a wonderful little sight. A robin. Rusty redbreast, grey wings, yellowish beak, et al. Mary’s feeders are the place to be if you are a bird in our neighborhood, but it has been months since a robin has alighted in our yard. While the arrival of the first robin as a sign of spring is as trustworthy as a groundhog’s shadow, it lifted my spirits that spring might be near after all. With a warmed heart I headed into my office to begin the day’s work.

A little latter, carrying a fresh cup of coffee from the kitchen to the office, I stopped at the sliding glass deck door to scan the yard for that robin.

He was nowhere to be found and that cold-looking snow was still on the mountaintops, but just before I returned to the office, a finch landed on the table on the deck. At first glance he was as brown as a fallen leaf, decked out in his winter plumage, and I felt for a moment that perhaps the robin was just a fluke and that spring was still far away. Then the finch spread his wings to take off and I saw the flash of a few bright yellow feathers.

No, that robin was not a fluke—he was the first, and the goldfinches are beginning their color change. Both announce the sure arrival of spring, even if I still feel the cold breath of winter on my neck.

The birds had let the secret out of the bag: Spring will return, perhaps sooner than I had thought, certainly sooner than I had feared. They again lifted my spirits — spring will come again to my mountains and the riding 43

days will be abundant. This revelation not only reassured me about the weather and the change of season, it caused me to think and recollect and perhaps foresee like the birds. It has been a cold, hard period of time of late for our motorcycle industry, analogous to this atypically snowy and bitterly cold southern winter. But this difficult time, just like the harsh winter at hand, is not a permanent thing, for as the old-timers say: “This too shall pass.”

As I reflected on these things I remembered the two back-to-back warm days we had last week; as if out of nowhere, motorcycles were everywhere on the roads. Given the least little opportunity, the riders were out. It is the unstoppable spirit of the biker that will prevail; no recession or weather will hold them back for long. One need only to look carefully, scan the horizon, and you will see the flocks on the wing; the future is headed towards us and it will melt the cold of today. We who ride will ride again and, sooner than some think, the motorcycle world will be bright with new growth. I guess the only question is: Who will be the early birds arriving to claim their territory and get the proverbial worms? Only time will tell—till then, thank you to God for the birds!

Jeanne’s Beef Barley Soup - Doyle’s Pub & Eatery, Richmond, IL. 1⁄2 gallon good beef stock 1⁄2 cup chopped onion 1⁄2 cup chopped celery 1⁄2 cup chopped carrots 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon dried basil 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup medium barley 1⁄2 cup diced tomatoes 1 cup good diced beef (I use prime rib or sirloin) 1⁄4 cup good red wine 1⁄2 lemon Place the beef stock in a large pot over a high heat, and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the onion, celery, carrots, garlic, bay leaf, oregano, basil, black pepper, barley, tomatoes, and beef. Cook for at least 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until barley is cooked and tender.

Add 1⁄4 cup good red wine to soup (my rule of thumb is if you can’t drink it, don’t cook with it!). Squeeze the lemon juice into the soup and drop lemon half into the soup. Let soup set for half hour longer over a low heat.

If too thick, add water.

Serve with a nice glass of wine and garlic bread.

Makes about 11⁄2 gallons.

www.statelinechoppers.com Since my last article I’ve come across a topic that I have not covered yet. A customer came into the shop complaining that his bike rode a little rough and had an intermittent clunk sound. When I asked him where he had been having his bike serviced, he said he did all of his own work. This is not out of the ordinary, a lot of riders do their own service, change their own oil, trans fluid, even some internal work, and many of them do a very good and thorough job. Then there are the customers like this one.

When I started asking him about his bike, I started with his oil change intervals and transmission fluid, primary etc., but when I asked him about shocks, front forks, swing arm bushings and other items, his answer was what I expected…The bike had a little over 50,000 miles on it, and had nothing done to the front forks, rear shocks or swing arm bearings. Although he had paid very close attention to fluids, wheel bearings, cable adjustments, and general maintenance, he didn’t give any thought to the other points of bike maintenance I had asked him about, including the brake fluid.

Remember, there is more to scheduled maintenance than just grease and fluids. Opinions differ on intervals , my opinion is that front fork fluid should be changed every 10,000 miles, brake fluid flushed every 15,000 miles and every 50,000 miles you should replace the bushings and dampers in the front forks and replace the rear shocks & and swing arm bushings.

The manuals all have the same or similar intervals.

The point is if you’re going to do your own service, make sure your doing it all. As for the customer I was speaking of previously, I rebuilt his front end changed his rear shocks and swing arm bushings, flushed and replaced his brake fluid and several other items and his bike rides and runs like new.

There is more to services than just changing your fluids and packing wheel bearings, if you’re not in it for the whole job than just do what you can, but have someone else take care of the rest.
