B08: Spanish II | Limit: 14

This conversational course builds upon the basics established in Spanish I. It is intended to help students develop basic speaking proficiency, indicated by the ability to form complete sentences from combined parts of speech. Although Spanish I is not required as a prerequisite to enroll, students should have some familiarity with nouns, articles and adjectives before taking this course.

B09: Painting with Pastels | Limit: 18 *Additional cost for materials (~$25)

This introductory course will explore the medium of soft pastels, focusing on materials and techniques. Since the medium is applied dry, the process is clearly associated with drawing. The thought process and finished result, however, is closely related to painting. As a result, pastels offer the artist a special blend of the two most common approaches to art creation.

This course will introduce students to Indonesian cooking. We will make dishes using basic ingredients such as white pepper and fresh spices, and other staples such as ginger, shallot, lemongrass, galangal, chili pepper, and more. We will use those ingredients to make stir fry and curry dishes with potato, tofu, and chicken, as well as other Indonesian dishes such as fragrant coconut rice and vegetarian spring rolls.

B11: The Journey of Vincent Van Gogh | Limit: 20

This course will teach students about the works of Vincent Van Gogh by looking at his life and times, with a careful study of the works themselves. We will go beyond the myth and stereotypes of the “mad artist” by exploring Van Gogh’s quest for meaning, personal expression, and connection with humanity. Van Gogh’s journey began at 16 and ended with his death at 37, during which time he worked as an art gallery dealer, school teacher, Protestant lay preacher and painter. He created over 2,000 works of art during the last ten years of his life. With exploration of Van Gogh’s artistic times and the influences on his work, we will enhance understanding of his work and legacy.

B12: Discover the Spirit of China | Limit: 14

This course will explore the spirit of China through its language, history, cuisine, culture, and modern pursuits. China and its culture are both an ancient and modern place, and can be enchanting, extraordinarily hospitable, and profound. It can also be frustrating, pushy, and confusing. We will look at a perspective China that is as engaging as it is illusive.

B13: Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign Limit: 30 This course will examine the historical significance of

B14: George III, English Politics, and the American Revolution | Limit: 30 This course will explore King George III’s reign during the American Revolution, and the decades leading up to it. When George III ascended to the throne of England in 1760, the American colonies were still loyal subjects of the English crown. Just sixteen years later, however, the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence which stated the American intent to separate from English rule. What transpired during this very short interval to create this revolutionary transformation? Specifically, how did the political environments in both England and America shape the actions and responses that resulted in the creation of the United States in 1783? This course will provide answers to those questions and more.

B15: Creating Valley Animal Portraits | Limit: 15 *Additional cost for materials (~$35)

This course will teach students how to draw animal portraits. We will use watercolor paints, colored pencils, and micron pens to depict farm animals including cows, chickens, sheep, and goats. Lessons will include instruction on composition, use of materials, value study, and use of color. This class is suitable for beginners to intermediate levels. Students will need to bring paper, pencils, erasers, a few brushes, watercolor paints and additional supplies, which are included in a supply list to be distributed by email before the first class.

B10: Introduction to Indonesian Cooking Limit: 15

Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign, including the strategy and tactics of the battles, the routes traveled by the opposing armies, and the overall significance of the campaign to the Civil War. Information will be conveyed through the observations of three key characters in the struggle: General Thomas “Stonewall Jackson,” Jedediah Hotchkiss, and Colonel Turner Ashby. If students have an ancestor who fought in the Valley Campaign, we will do our best to cater the sessions with that in mind. A field trip may also be possible depending on weather.

B16: Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries: From Catherine the Great to Alexander III | Limit: 28

This course will cover the history of Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries, starting with Catherine the Great and the Enlightenment. From there, we will move on to the Napoleonic Wars and the Golden Age of Russian Literature including Pushkin, Gogol, Tergenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. After that, we will explore the Emancipation Reforms, the origins of the Revolutionary Movement, and new developments in music and art.

B17: A Field Guide to Musical Instruments of the World | Limit: 30 This course will examine the different classes of instruments and the forms they have taken in various world cultures. Contemporary, folk, and historical instruments will be included in this survey of the many ways people have found to produce music and how instruments have evolved across centuries and cultures. Recordings, photographs, and videos will introduce
