As an integral part of James Madison University, the member-driven Lifelong Learning Institute (JMU LLI) promotes lifelong learning by providing affordable, not-for-credit, intellectual, cultural, and social experiences to enrich the lives of adults in the central Shenandoah Valley.

Join our members in their passion to live life to the fullest. While there is no age restriction to our activities, most classes meet during the weekdays at locations across Rockingham County. Instructors come from a wide variety of disciplines and include university faculty, both active and retired, community educators and leaders, and LLI members. There are no tests or grades, just the love of learning!

Join our members in their passion to live life to the fullest!

We offer a free one year membership for all new members. Each year following there is a $20 annual membership fee as a returning member.

You must be a member in order to register for courses and events.

Register Register online at www.jmu.edu/LLI OR Mail the registration form along with payment* to: JMU Lifelong Learning Institute 127 West Bruce Street, MSC 9006 Harrisonburg, VA 22807 *A $50 fee will be assessed for any check returned by the bank.

Course and trip registrations will not be accepted via phone or email.

Weather Policy: If JMU is delayed, closed, or closes early due to bad weather, all LLI classes will be rescheduled for a later date.

Volunteer

Annual membership is from July 1 to June 30.

Lifelong Learning is even more fun when you volunteer! Members volunteer in a variety of areas and with varying levels of commitment.

Upon receipt of membership, members agree to receive all LLI correspondence via email.

The Institute depends on volunteers to help with many aspects of planning and programming: serving as a class assistant, teaching courses, and serving on project teams.

Parking at the Ice House 1) You may park in the Water Street Parking Deck, one block from the Ice House free of charge.

2) You may park in the City Municipal Lot on Liberty Street, one block from the Ice House free of charge.

2) Two-hour street parking is available on Bruce Street, across from the Ice House.

3) In order to park in the JMU Ice House Lot on Bruce Street, you must display a JMU Parking Permit or an Ice House Temporary Parking Permit. The permit will be date-specific and should be displayed on your vehicle dashboard. You can park anywhere (note the handicapped spaces!) in the LOWER lot. Do not park above the notice signs.

A Message from the Director: Creating a Common Narrative During my first year as director, I’ve encountered two situations when meeting someone for the first time to discuss the JMU Lifelong Learning Institute.

One is the initial surprise when I do not meet their expectations. “I thought you would be older,” they say. As someone who turns 40 next year, I consider this to be a great job perk. I laugh and say that our members keep me youthful (which is true).

This exchange is typically followed with a question: “So what do you do?”

It helps if people can associate a face with a program. The story I share is about one of our charter members who has been with the program since its early beginnings, years before we began keeping digital records.

Although I cannot inventory everything this person has experienced over more than two decades of participation, I know this much. Since 2015, he has completed nearly 70 courses, participated in more than a dozen international trips, and invested more than 400 hours in voluntary study and self-directed learning as a program participant.

Recognizing this remarkable fact, I asked how he had benefited from his participation. His response could not have been more perfect: “This has added life to my years and years to my life.”

Our goal is to make this exceptional narrative a common one by maintaining an environment that enables students to continue to thrive across decades and throughout all stages of life.

That’s why it’s my pleasure to present to you this catalog, which contains a wide range of learning opportunities to help you maintain an active body, mind, and social life. I think it’s important to recognize that every course, event, and travel opportunity that appears within was prepared by members for members. We cannot express our gratitude enough for our wonderful volunteers!

I trust you will find plenty of courses to stimulate your love of learning, but I also encourage you to check out our great lineup of free public lectures, join an extracurricular special interest group, or make plans to participate in a day trip or travel abroad as part of our group tours.

I also invite you to attend our Open House on Friday, January 10 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the JMU Festival & Conference Center, located at 1301 Carrier Drive in Harrisonburg. This come and go event is held before the start of each new semester and provides opportunity to meet instructors and staff, learn about spring offerings, and mingle with other members.

A02: Sun Style Tai Chi for Health And Enjoyment Limit: 14

This course teaches Tai Chi for health, enjoyment, and rehabilitation. We will follow the Sun Style form in which the upright postures flow from one to another. Each movement will be broken down into easy to learn and follow components. Research shows that regular practice of Tai Chi can improve strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, bone density, and reduce stress, while also minimizing the risk of falling.

This course will focus on Irish writers from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ireland is a land of storytellers and poets, and we will acquire a better understanding of this country through their words. We will start with William Butler Yeats and the Celtic Twilight, and then look at the country’s struggle for Independence from Great Britain. We will then move on to the violence that wracked Northern Ireland and the Republic through the works of Colm McCann and others, the Celtic Tiger and ghost estates, and then end in the present day with current poems and stories from the Irish presses.

This course is designed to teach the basics of Spanish communication and culture. Students will learn how to greet others, navigate interpersonal exchanges, order from a menu in a restaurant, ask for directions, and other phrases required for everyday communication.

A09: Rolling in Dough – Artisan Bread Baking at Home | Limit: 10

This course will teach basic photography using the manual camera setting to take full control of the photography process. Each class will begin with a key photography element – such as shutter, aperture, etc. – followed by an hour or more of guided practice. Students should bring a camera with a fully charged battery, backup batteries, a tripod for stability, a storage/memory card with room for additional photos, and their camera’s user manual, if available.

This course will focus on greens ways to love and care for nature. Each class meeting will feature a guest speaker who will present on different environmental topics, including the 5 R’s of zero waste, energy use, plastics, consumer habits, and the web of life. Each speaker will explain their topic and make the case for a variety of thoughtful personal actions contributing to a greener life. The second hour of each class meeting will include a short field trip or simple DIY projects. We will make dryer balls, non-toxic cleaners and body lotion, bee houses and much more.

A05: The Loneliness Epidemic | Limit: 24

This course will examine the mechanisms and consequences of loneliness, and explore the broader topics of social connection and disconnection. Loneliness is on the rise in the United States. In fact, some scholars believe that we are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. While the lectures will be centered on scientific studies of social behavior, we will discuss how to apply the science to improve our own and other people’s lives.

SESSION A

This course focuses on the “Five Civilized Tribes of the American Southeast” – the Seminole, Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw – from before European contact through the 20th century. The course material is developed from the first course on Seminole Indian history taught at Florida State University in 2006, and special attention will be paid to that tribe.

A06: This Storied Land: Understanding Ireland through Its Poems, Plays and Stories | Limit: 24

This course will teach students about the history and topics of weather specific to the Shenandoah Valley.

Due to the topography, the weather in the Valley can be unique. We’ll start with some basic meteorology learning about warm and cold fronts, as well as basic weather concepts from the jet stream to low and high pressure.

Then we’ll move on to severe weather, tropical weather, and winter weather. We will also talk about how we can forecast the weather.

* Additional $25 baking supply fee payable to instructor This hands-on course teaches students basic techniques for artisan bread baking at home. Students will learn about starters, kneading, scoring, and baking with steam for crusty breads.

A10: Fundamental Principles of Restorative Justice in the American Justice System | Limit: 20 This experiential and interactive course will present restorative justice as a worldview, demonstrating the fundamental principles, philosophy, and values by exploring its history in America. We will develop an understanding of where we intersect with the history of restorative justice today, here in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Participants will learn how a restorative justice worldview can be expressed in criminal justice and community contexts, and how to engage those values as a guidepost to practices that develop oneself as a person of integrity. Participants need to bring a journal.

A11: Woodrow Wilson’s Childhood in Reconstruction | Limit: 20

This course will look at how the years of former president Woodrow Wilson’s childhood and adolescence in the turbulent times of Reconstruction shaped the man who would become such a consequential president of the Modern Era. When Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton in 1856, the South had not yet experienced the Civil War, Emancipation, Reconstruction, or Jim Crow. By the time he died in 1924, the world had seen the Great War, radio, telegraph, and the League of Nations. President Wilson had a hand in bringing about some of the important developments of the 20th century. * Museum entrance and private tour included in course fee.

A12: No Fear Poetry Limit: 18

This course will engage in close readings of several poems each week from English and American literary traditions.

Poets read will include William Shakespeare, Adrienne Rich, and William Wordsworth, among others, with each class focusing on specific themes such as innocence and experience, love and loss, and nature. After a review of important literary terms such as diction, syntax, and meter, we will examine the formal and thematic elements of the selected poems. The instructor will provide photocopies of each week’s readings.

A13: The Music of Johann Sebastian Bach Limit: 24

This class will examine a number of Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions, including organ and other keyboard works, concertos, cantatas, and passions. Bach wrote music according to the demands of his employments, although at the same time, his spirituality seems to permeate all of the music he composed. We will look into the particular professional and personal circumstances manifested in those works. Class materials will be available online and include watching and responding to YouTube videos. Any readings or other resources will also be available online or distributed through class handouts.

A14: The Many Dimensions of Climate Change Limit: 24

This course will explore the questions, facts, and misconceptions around climate change. Some are concerned about climate change, calling it a climate crisis, while others are dismissive. Some call climate change the greatest moral dilemma ever faced by humankind, others call it a hoax. What does science have to say about the matter? How rapidly is Earth warming? What questions and concerns does this raise about our common future?

How should we respond? We will explore all these questions and more.

A15: Intercultural Communications | Limit: 20

This course will examine skills for avoiding misunderstandings in intercultural settings. To develop an understanding of how culture affects the communication process, we will trace the role of historical, political, and religious factors in creating intercultural

misunderstandings. Classes will include lots of personal stories interspersed with theory and discussion.

A16: Social Partnership Dance Foundations Limit: 40

This course will teach the fundamentals of four unique styles of partnership dance – Bacheta, Argentine, Tango, Salsa, and Charleston. No partner or prior experience needed! Dance often feels inaccessible to many individuals, but we will focus on breaking down the fears inherent to individuals afraid of dancing – failure, forgetfulness, and fitness – to allow students to recognize that dance is not only fun, but also for everyone. Each session will consist of three parts: a 45-minute lesson interspersed with practice to music, 30 minutes of open practice, and a 45-minute introduction to additional elements and an advanced pattern.

A17: Prominent First Ladies Limit: 24

This course will explore how prominent women met the challenges of what many consider one of the toughest jobs in the United States – that of the First Lady. We will explore the ways these wives supported their presidential husbands and helped shape American History. Subjects range from Abigail Adams, who was not only First Lady but also mother to President John Quincy Adams, to Michelle Obama, who faced a new challenge of being a 21st Century First Lady raising two daughters in the limelight of the modern-day White House. We will also look at the lives and contributions of Dolley Madison, Mary Todd Lincoln, Ellen and Edith Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbara and Laura Bush, and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

A18: Eat Like a Greek! | Limit: 20

* Additional $20 supply fee payable to instructor This course will provide building blocks for eating simply, healthfully, mindfully and seasonally with the Mediterranean Diet, touted as the best diet for overall health. Students will learn to prepare traditional recipes using fresh produce, herbs, and spices. This is a hands-on class, where we will chop, season, and learn to prepare authentic recipes from Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Lebanon. These new recipes focus on vegetables, beans and fish. The class is designed so that you can recreate these simple, flavorful recipes at home.

A19: Awaken to Your Dreams Limit: 18

This course will teach students to interpret the meaning of dreams through conversation, art, self-dialogue, and dream drama. People have explored the meaning of their dreams for thousands of years. Though dream images are a symbolic language of hidden meanings, dreams are meaningful when understood. The activities in this course will offer greater self-awareness, more understanding of the language of dreams, increased communication between conscious and unconscious worlds, a look at life from a new perspective, and practical tips for remembering dreams and working with them.

A21: Make It, Print It, Share It: Designing a Cast Metal Ring with Fusion 360 – Part II | Limit: 08

* Additional variable costs for printing This course is a continuation of a Fall 2019 session, which is a required prerequisite for participation. It will teach students to take their 3D design skills to the next level in JMU’s 3D printing classroom, 3SPACE. We will use Fusion 360 to design a ring from scratch that will be 3D printed in metal at Shapeways, an online printing service company. 3D design and printing experience not required.

Students will pay Shapeways directly when uploading their designs for printing. Printing costs will vary based on the type of material chosen.

A22: Miles Davis in American Culture Limit: 28

This course looks at the life and music of trumpeter Miles Davis (1926-1991). Davis’ playing, band leading skills, and ability to identify and direct new musical trends helped to change jazz at least three times, as he pioneered cool, modal, and fusion jazz. Using recordings, videos, and interview excerpts, we will examine Davis’ impact on the development of jazz and American Culture in the latter half of the 20th century.

A23: French Conversational Skills I Limit: 20

Learning a language can be fun, and this course uses a variety of methods such as role-play, discussion, debate, oral presentation, and board games to help students learn the basics of French grammar and conversation.

The goal is to build up confidence to participate in basic conversation, and we will focus on fluency, pronunciation and the common everyday vocabulary used by French people. Authentic documents such as songs from francophone artists and short videos will be used to help with listening comprehension.

There is no right or wrong in Zentangle, just beauty. Students will discover, explore, and embrace their individual styles and personal artistry. We will also learn about new patterns, tangles, and the 11-step method behind Zentangle. No special artistic ability is needed. Although all will follow the same basic instructions, each resulting artwork will be unique.

Hiking Group

This group shares a love of hiking and meets for regular outings in and around Elkton. Hikes are led by Jerry Hopkins, a master naturalist. We walk 3-5 miles at a leisurely pace and usually carpool to site.

Session B: March - April 2020 B01: The Long Road to Women’s Suffrage Limit: 25

This course will focus on women’s suffrage in the United States that culminated in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The road to women’s suffrage is not one that originated in one country or can be traced to a specific period of time. It also cannot be credited to only a few dedicated suffragists who advocated for a long overdue basic right.

We will learn about some of the many women and men who played an active role in The Long Road to Woman’s Suffrage.

SESSION B

B03: This is Us 1: Gender and Sex - It’s Not as Simple as XX and XY | March 16 | Limit: 24

Gender self-perception, sexual orientation, anatomical sex, and physiological sex do not necessarily align in all individuals. In humans, genetic sex is conferred by the male, who provides either an X or a Y chromosome, resulting most of the time in either an XX or XY offspring.

But which gender a person’s brain feels it is, the sex with which they prefer to engage in mating-type activities, the appearance of their external sex organs, and the way that their body produces or uses sex hormones may not match the norms of their genetic sex. Sometimes these variations are due to genes or chromosomes gone wrong, but in other cases, they are simply the result of normal variations in human phenotypes. In this class, we will learn about the different layers of gender and sex, and about how they can vary among individuals. We will look at the latest research into gender perception and sexual orientation, and we will discuss mutations that can affect how the body responds to the sex hormones that determine its anatomical and physiological sex.

B04: This is Us 2: Trust Your Gut - How Our Gut Microbiome Influences Our Mind, Metabolism, and Immune System | March 23 | Limit: 24

The flora of little creatures that comprise our microbiome are without a doubt our new best friends. A dysregulated microbiome has been implicated in colorectal cancer, autism spectrum disorders, obesity, intestinal infections, HIV susceptibility, chronic inflammatory disease, depression, and Type II diabetes, among many other maladies. And yet we continue to abuse and assault our

microbiota with antibiotics, germophobic cleanliness, and diets rich in simple carbohydrates. We will learn exactly what makes up our microbiome and how to optimize its health, so that it can help us optimize our health.

B05: This is Us 3: DNA is not the Whole Story How Epigenetics Controls Our DNA | March 30 Limit: 24

DNA refers to the ~3.2 billion ACGT letters that make up our chromosomes. If we look at DNA as the hardware of physiologic control and heredity, what is the software that controls the DNA hardware? Epigenetics refers to all the processes that regulate how our DNA is expressed (or not expressed as the case may be). While we cannot control our DNA letter sequence, we can influence the epigenetic software that controls it. We will learn about the structure and function of DNA, how epigenetics packages and decorates DNA, and what we can do to influence our personal epigenetic landscape for optimal health and aging.

B06: This is Us 4: Know Thyself - How Precision Medicine is changing the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention of Disease | April 6 | Limit: 24

Precision medicine refers to the customization of healthcare to explicitly incorporate our personal genetic makeup. Whereas a certain drug may be a silver bullet for one person, another person with the exact same disease may be unaffected by that drug or even killed by it. How can that be? The ~20,000 genes within our DNA differ by ~0.1% among individuals, but it is those differences that control our individual disease susceptibility and how we personally react to drugs, to the diet we eat, to stress, and even to exercise. We will learn about current strategies to personalize disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, given the recent advances in genomic sequencing, and how we may benefit from this new approach to maximize our own wellness.

B07: This is Us 5: You Get What You Reward How Addiction Takes Hold of Our Brains and Why it Won’t Let Go | April 13 | Limit: 24 Our brains have intentionally and exquisitely evolved to not only seek out the things that make it feel good, but to change itself to want and need those things even more. We call this part of our brain the “reward system,” and it is a two-edged sword that was meant to enhance our evolutionary survivability, but that can instead become our own worst enemy. Addiction is a state of the brain craving something that enhances the feelgood neurotransmitter dopamine in the reward system.

A person can be addicted to opioids, methamphetamine, gambling, sex, eating, shopping, and even social media.

It is now clear that the tendency toward addiction has a substantial genetic component. We will learn about the brain′s reward/reinforcement system, how it interacts with the rest of our brain, why it can make us do things

that sabotage our very survival, and how to best treat addiction to have the highest chance of success.

B08: Spanish II | Limit: 14

This conversational course builds upon the basics established in Spanish I. It is intended to help students develop basic speaking proficiency, indicated by the ability to form complete sentences from combined parts of speech. Although Spanish I is not required as a prerequisite to enroll, students should have some familiarity with nouns, articles and adjectives before taking this course.

B09: Painting with Pastels | Limit: 18 *Additional cost for materials (~$25)

This introductory course will explore the medium of soft pastels, focusing on materials and techniques. Since the medium is applied dry, the process is clearly associated with drawing. The thought process and finished result, however, is closely related to painting. As a result, pastels offer the artist a special blend of the two most common approaches to art creation.

This course will introduce students to Indonesian cooking.

We will make dishes using basic ingredients such as white pepper and fresh spices, and other staples such as ginger, shallot, lemongrass, galangal, chili pepper, and more. We will use those ingredients to make stir fry and curry dishes with potato, tofu, and chicken, as well as other Indonesian dishes such as fragrant coconut rice and vegetarian spring rolls.

B11: The Journey of Vincent Van Gogh | Limit: 20

This course will teach students about the works of Vincent Van Gogh by looking at his life and times, with a careful study of the works themselves. We will go beyond the myth and stereotypes of the “mad artist” by exploring Van Gogh’s quest for meaning, personal expression, and connection with humanity. Van Gogh’s journey began at 16 and ended with his death at 37, during which time he worked as an art gallery dealer, school teacher, Protestant lay preacher and painter. He created over 2,000 works of art during the last ten years of his life. With exploration of Van Gogh’s artistic times and the influences on his work, we will enhance understanding of his work and legacy.

B12: Discover the Spirit of China | Limit: 14

This course will explore the spirit of China through its language, history, cuisine, culture, and modern pursuits.

China and its culture are both an ancient and modern place, and can be enchanting, extraordinarily hospitable, and profound. It can also be frustrating, pushy, and confusing. We will look at a perspective China that is as engaging as it is illusive.

B13: Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign Limit: 30 This course will examine the historical significance of

B14: George III, English Politics, and the American Revolution | Limit: 30 This course will explore King George III’s reign during the American Revolution, and the decades leading up to it.

When George III ascended to the throne of England in 1760, the American colonies were still loyal subjects of the English crown. Just sixteen years later, however, the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence which stated the American intent to separate from English rule. What transpired during this very short interval to create this revolutionary transformation? Specifically, how did the political environments in both England and America shape the actions and responses that resulted in the creation of the United States in 1783? This course will provide answers to those questions and more.

B15: Creating Valley Animal Portraits | Limit: 15 *Additional cost for materials (~$35)

This course will teach students how to draw animal portraits. We will use watercolor paints, colored pencils, and micron pens to depict farm animals including cows, chickens, sheep, and goats. Lessons will include instruction on composition, use of materials, value study, and use of color. This class is suitable for beginners to intermediate levels. Students will need to bring paper, pencils, erasers, a few brushes, watercolor paints and additional supplies, which are included in a supply list to be distributed by email before the first class.

SESSION B

B10: Introduction to Indonesian Cooking Limit: 15

Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign, including the strategy and tactics of the battles, the routes traveled by the opposing armies, and the overall significance of the campaign to the Civil War. Information will be conveyed through the observations of three key characters in the struggle: General Thomas “Stonewall Jackson,” Jedediah Hotchkiss, and Colonel Turner Ashby. If students have an ancestor who fought in the Valley Campaign, we will do our best to cater the sessions with that in mind. A field trip may also be possible depending on weather.

B16: Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries: From Catherine the Great to Alexander III | Limit: 28

This course will cover the history of Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries, starting with Catherine the Great and the Enlightenment. From there, we will move on to the Napoleonic Wars and the Golden Age of Russian Literature including Pushkin, Gogol, Tergenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. After that, we will explore the Emancipation Reforms, the origins of the Revolutionary Movement, and new developments in music and art.

B17: A Field Guide to Musical Instruments of the World | Limit: 30 This course will examine the different classes of instruments and the forms they have taken in various world cultures. Contemporary, folk, and historical instruments will be included in this survey of the many ways people have found to produce music and how instruments have evolved across centuries and cultures.

Recordings, photographs, and videos will introduce

students to instruments from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America. Since not all cultures follow the same musical rules, an introductory session on music theory will be included to help explain the principles behind different instruments and the sounds they produce.

B19: Taking the Leap into Stage Acting Limit: 10

This introductory acting course will start slowly and progress appropriately based on the individual abilities and experiences of students. Activities include physical and vocal warmups, theatre games, acting exercises, character development, and scene work. Students will want to wear comfortable clothing and shoes that do not restrict movement. This is a course for someone who wants to learn by doing, so come ready to work and play.

B20: Fundamentals of Mindfulness Limit: 15

This course will introduce students to the skillset known as “mindfulness.” As we strengthen the muscle of our attention, we are more able to experience each moment, just as it is, on purpose, without judgement. Each session will include instruction in specific mindfulness practices and include a basic seated meditation. We will also explore breathing exercises, mindfulness of eating, use of mantra, walking mindfulness, visualization, body scans, seated yoga, and metta meditation. In combination with a daily commitment to practice, each student will become more familiar with their inner landscape and habits of mind.

B21: Hidden Treasures in Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples | Limit: 28

This course will try to recapture the spirit of the 18th century grand tour, when travelers had time to contemplate and absorb the atmosphere of these five cities. We will explore the history of Venice as a republic and trading center, its islands, churches, and art, before it sinks into the sea. In Bologna, we will look at the Church, and the earliest medieval university, the arts, learning, and political tensions. In Florence, we will look at noble family palaces, villas, and private art collections. In Rome, we visit early Christian basilicas, Raphael’s frescoes, and little gems of Baroque architecture and sculpture.

In Naples, we explore the Kingdom of Aragon, hardly remembered today, and the rulers’ patronage of culture and the arts.

Learn the enjoyable and relaxing craft of Japanese paper folding, known as origami. In these two pop-up sessions, we will learn how to make, then take home a spring garden basket and multi-colored tulips to fill it.

This course is designed for those who are daily present to others and would like some time away to honor their inner selves. Through the use of collage techniques and design, participants may gain greater understandings to their needs, gifts, and inner abilities to thrive. This class is offered as a means of respite and quiet contemplation, and will be a safe zone regarding all artistic abilities.

This course will help students improve their voices within a safe environment to sing enjoyable songs and grow as singers. The 10-week ensemble will feature intro to choir songs. Using choral pieces in 2, 3 & 4-voice parts (as participant skills allow), the director will teach music with an easy to moderate challenge for those who have little knowledge of singing or reading music. We will review music basics and rehearse good singing practices. Finally, at the end of the class, we will share our music in a lowstress performance atmosphere. This course is for students who have grasped the French grammar basics and are looking for more practice speaking. We will use a variety of methods such as roleplay, discussion, debate, oral presentation, and board games to ensure that learning remains fun. The goal is to build up confidence to hold a conversation on various topics, and we will focus on fluency, pronunciation and the common everyday vocabulary used by French people.

Authentic documents such as songs from francophone artists and short videos will be used to help with listening comprehension.

This course will focus on up-close-and-personal interaction with the spectrum of separate and distinct groups of Mennonites in and around Harrisonburg.

Mennonites are a nearly 500-year-old Christian group with origins in 16th-century Europe, and were among the earliest settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. Historically, they were an agrarian society with deeply religious communal commitments and practices. Today, their descendants consist of a number of different groups, ranging from the most conservative, buggy-driving “Old Orders,” to progressive Mennonites who operate a thriving local liberal arts university and are involved in all sectors of public life. The course will include local trips to visit Mennonite institutions, churches, schools and businesses.

This course teaches Tai Chi for health, enjoyment, and rehabilitation. We will follow the Sun Style form in which the upright postures flow from one to another. Each movement will be broken down into easy to learn and follow components. Research shows that regular practice of Tai Chi can improve strength, balance, flexibility, mobility, bone density, and reduce stress, while also minimizing the risk of falling. Students enrolled in a previous session may also join this course, as sustained practice is key to better health.

C04: Down Rural Roads | Limit: 28

This course will explore the local rural roads that lead to vestiges of old American farms that hint of our agrarian past. The instructors have traveled the back roads of the Shenandoah Valley photographing and documenting farm buildings and folk art. We will learn about the evolution of silos, the architecture and function of old barns which reflect the German and Swiss Heritage of their builders, the changing landscape of the farming community, and folk art. The last class meeting will include a field trip that

This conversational course will be a continuation of Spanish I and II. It is intended to help students develop basic speaking proficiency, indicated by the ability to form complete sentences from combined parts of speech.

Although Spanish I and II is not required as a pre-requisite to enroll, students should have some familiarity with nouns, articles and adjectives before taking this course.

C07: Meet William Faulkner Limit: 20

This course will focus on the works of William Faulkner, who helped initiate the so-called Southern Literary Renaissance with the publication of classic American novels including The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Light in August, and The Hamlet. While Faulkner was serving as writer in residence at the University of Virginia, a questioner asked him which of his novels the uninitiated reader should tackle first, to which he answered: The Unvanquished. Students in this course will read and discuss The Unvanquished, followed by a reading of his more sophisticated novel, Lie Down in Darkness.

SESSION C

This course will teach students about the exemplary life, vision and legacy of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. A paleontologist of the first rank, Jesuit father, mystic, and shining intellect – Teilhard was all this and more, but not necessarily a household name for most. Teilhard died in exile on Easter Sunday in 1955 with only a handful of fellow Jesuits attending his burial. Yet, nearly 65 years following his death, thousands gather around the world to celebrate his life and legacy. Mikhail Gorbachev’s notion of prestroika (restructuring) was heavily influenced by Teilhard’s thought, and among the terms he coined are cosmogenesis, complexity-consciousness, the noosphere, and the Omega point.

This course provides an introduction to birding, one of the fastest-growing hobbies, with both classroom sessions and field birding. We will explore our local birds: year-round, winter, and summer residents, along with migrants that briefly pass through. Learn how to recognize birds by shape, size, behavior, plumage and habitat. Topics will include how to observe birds, birding etiquette, and use of binoculars and field guides. We will explore backyard birding, attracting birds, and birding afield. Students will need to provide their own binoculars and field guide.

C08: Wearable Art! Knit a One Skein Shawl Limit: 12 * Additional cost for materials (~$45 max)

This relaxing, knit-along style course will allow students to choose one of three pre-selected shawl patterns to work one. We will focus on using and refining skills instead of learning new ones, and producing a beautiful finished item. This course is suitable for students who can confidently knit and purl, so more advanced knitters are welcome. During class, expect to work at your own pace, with plenty of time to ask questions and interact with the instructor and other students.

C09: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Transcendentalist Prophet of Concord | Limit: 28

This course will examine Ralph Waldo Emerson’s background and examine his contribution to the development of a distinctly American poetry. Emerson, whose portrait adorned the walls of 19th century schoolrooms alongside those of U.S. presidents, was the leader of the American Transcendentalist movement. We will also look at some other members of the American Transcendentalist movement, including the early feminist, Margaret Fuller.

C10: Finding and Exploring the Polar Regions of the Earth | Limit: 30

This course looks at what we can glean from the expeditions of early explorers about the Earth’s Polar Regions, and how these vast landscapes have a profound effect on the Earth’s climate and ocean systems. Life in Earth’s two polar regions can be incredibly difficult due to the subzero temperatures and extreme annual variations of sunlight. Early European explorers braving these harsh conditions encountered ice barriers that prevented traversing a sea route leading to the Far East (the Northwest Passage). Today, these once frozen waterways are becoming more navigable as the planet’s rising temperatures cause Arctic ice to thaw at a rate faster than normal. Locked within semi-permanent ice sheets is a unique record of what our planet’s climate was like over the past one million years and hints about how long-term temperature changes at the poles may impact us all.

C11: Key Works in Environmental Literature Limit: 18

This course will investigate the relationships humans build with the non-human world through great works of literature. The chosen readings and course assignments will ask us to interpret literary texts as arguments about the value of human and non-human environments and their interaction. Our goal is to stimulate and complicate our thinking about this interaction and to improve our reading, conversing, and writing about literary texts, the natural world, and the kind of person you’re building with the non-human environment. We’ll write and share with one another informal responses to course readings, and conclude by using the readings to inspire, create, and present our own environmental literacy narrative to one another.

C12: Interpretive Florals: Flower Arranging as an Art Form | Limit: 25

* Additional $18 for floral foam and flowers payable to instructor This course builds upon the Fall 2019 session, which explored interpreting famous works of art through floral arrangement. Continuing with creative interpretation, we will create a class arrangement each week based on a piece of music. Two classes will be lecture/demonstration with discussion while the other two sessions will include a lecture/discussion with students completing their own floral interpretation. This class meets four times for 2 ½ hours each meeting.

C13: Music as a Tool for Wellness | Limit: 16

This highly experiential course is part drum circle, part show-and-tell, and part wellness practice, including mindfulness and sound-based meditation. It features hand-on music-making using hand drums, West African stick drums, percussion instruments from around the world, and some movement and voice. Students will also experience intentional sound—that is, time to relax in a gentle soundscape created by the instructor with gongs, metal and crystal bowls, chimes, and more. This class is highly adaptive to anyone’s needs and beginners are especially encouraged to attend. No experience or special skills are needed and all instruments are provided. This course is open to anyone who wants to learn about how rhythm and vibration help us be resilient to stress, reduce anxiety, and alter mood.

C14: Fundamentals of Mindfulness | Limit: 15

This course will introduce students to the skillset known as “mindfulness.” As we strengthen the muscle of our attention, we are more able to experience each moment, just as it is, on purpose, without judgement. Each session will include instruction in specific mindfulness practices and include a basic seated meditation. We will also explore breathing exercises, mindfulness of eating, use of mantra, walking mindfulness, visualization, body scans, seated yoga, and metta meditation. In combination with a daily commitment to practice, each student will become more familiar with their inner landscape and habits of mind.

C15: Transforming Your Yard into a Food Paradise: Early Spring | Limit: 12

This course will teach food gardening in late winter and early spring for both beginning and experienced growers. We will explore garden design and preparation, composting, seed starting and cold frame use, and fruit growing as landscaping. We will also learn how growing food enriches health and relationships, and reclaims valuable life skills that preserve the environment for future generations.

C16: Zentangle – Fun With Color | Limit: 14

C17: A Spring Tour of the Most Photogenic Places in our Community | Limit: 15

This course provides an introduction to photographic techniques through visiting and photographing some of most beautiful places in our community, including Silver Lake, Lake Shenandoah, Massanutten Mountain, and JMU. Students will be introduced to tools such as Google Photos, as well as post-processing, photo storage, and organization. Weeks 3-5 will include early morning field trips to local sites.

C18: Introduction to Italian Language and Culture Limit: 16 This introductory language course will teach basic skills including speaking, listening, and reading in the major themes in Italian culture. It serves as a great primer for anyone interested in learning a new language and practical preparation for those planning to travel abroad with LLI to Italy in Fall 2020.

Like any truly great work of art, it has as many meanings as there are people to interpret.

It has been seen as a justification for governments and a condemnation of them. It speaks to traditionalist and forward-thinkers. It is distinctively German and profoundly pan-national. It is the basis of most analyses of Wagner, and the most “conceptualized” theater piece in history. It provides a lifetime of study for musicologists and thrilling entertainment for the tone-deaf. It is an adventure for all who approach it.

This new experimental format includes 35 hours of intensive study spread across 10 sessions. Lunch breaks are included and students are to bring their own to eat onsite.

This course will focus on Richard Wagner’s epic 4-part music-drama, The Ring of Nibelung. We’ll watch and discuss the entire cycle, an act at a time, on DVD. We’ll also read together the great 13th-century Icelandic epic, The Volsunga Saga, and we’ll consider how Wagner’s Ring and JRR Tolkien’s Ring, which both come from the same sources, are alike and different. We’ll also look at Wagner’s profound influence on film music, specifically that of John Williams.

This course will serve as an inside look at the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival in Harrisonburg. It provides an introduction to the music that will be played during this year’s Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, including what goes on behind the scenes, and the history of the festival itself. It will also include attendance at noon concerts and rehearsals and time to talk with the conductor during the festival. Registration includes a ticket to one of the festival’s three ticketed events of the student’s choice.

Section-Hiking Virginia’s Appalachian Trail after Retirement | Dave Pruett

Most of his life, Dave Pruett lived within a half-hour’s drive of the Appalachian Trail and long dreamed of hiking its entire 2,200 miles. Retirement provided the time, but age created its own problems: bad knees and reduced stamina. After a couple of false starts, he settled on a viable strategy for tackling the 550 miles of trail within Virginia, hiking 25-mile sections at a time. In August 2019, Dave completed Virginia’s Appalachian Trail. Come share

The Remnants of War | Ken Rutherford

Landmines have killed and maimed more people than biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons combined.

Precursors of the weapon are said to have first been used in the American Civil War in the 1800s. During the Cold War, many states laid long stretches of landmines along borders. Antipersonnel mines are indiscriminate weapons that injure and kill civilians in every corner of the globe, every day. Lying in wait for their victims, they don’t recognize ceasefires, and continue to kill and maim long after the end of conflicts. They instill fear in communities and are a lethal barrier to development. There are dozens of reasons why all states should get on board the Mine Ban Treaty, and why full implementation of this lifesaving treaty must be ensured. Some of the moral, humanitarian, socio-economic, and diplomatic arguments will be given during this presentation along with photographs highlighting survivor stories.

Learn about local history on this guided historical tour of Rockingham County led by Paul Roth. This bus tour includes stops in Dayton, Broadway, and several sites en route along Virginia State Routes 42 and 11. These include: the Heritage Museum in Dayton, home of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Historical Society; the Breneman Turner Mill, the only surviving pre-Civil War mill in the county; the John Kline Homestead in Broadway; Long’s Chapel, which is the site of what remains of the African American Zenda settlement built by freed slaves; and the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center, built to commemorate the iconic local teacher. Live music became ubiquitous and dance halls, clubs, and teen centers became the mechanisms by which novice musicians honed their craft. This presentation will explore the dynamics of this decade and how music evolved during this time of civil unrest. The Association for the Preservation of the Virginia Antiquities (now Preservation Virginia) acquired 22.5 acres on Jamestown Island in 1893 to protect the site of America’s birthplace. In 1994 the VPVA began an archaeological project called Jamestown Rediscovery to find the remains will have a private guided tour of the project that has rewritten our understanding of early settler’s daily life, purpose, and struggle to establish a home in this new land. After the tour, you may enjoy lunch in the Café at the site. Following lunch, there will be time to explore the ongoing archaeological sites on your own or visit the museum. Ed Morrison’s brother, Michael, and his date, Debra Means, never made it home from the Mascoutah Community High School Prom held on May 3, 1969. In this true crime memoir, Ed Morrison chronicles his quest to discover the truth behind what happened that fateful night.

Gathering insight from interviews with former classmates and police investigators, attorneys, judges, and prison personnel, Morrison eventually identifies the perpetrator

of the prom night murders, who died while imprisoned without ever being convicted of these crimes. Morrison will share his 50-year journey in search of closure and what he learned about family, forgiveness, and the judicial system along the way.

T09: A Late Spring Evening with the Arts at VMRC

T10: Tour Dynamic Aviation

Join us for a tour of this Bridgewater-based business.

Founded in 1967, Dynamic Aviation employs more than 600 aviation professionals, with additional facilities in California, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico and operations that span 16 locations across three continents. Dynamic Aviation provides special-mission aviation solutions to federal, state, and local governments; non-profit research corporations; and private corporations. The Bridgewater facility is now home to the DC-3, “Miss Virginia,” recently flown over Normandy during D-Day celebrations and the first-ever Air Force One – officially known as “Columbine II” – currently under restoration. This tour takes approximately 90 minutes and requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time. Register by May 14.
