HISTORY

JKM Training, Inc. is a human service and education training company that specializes in the delivery of the Safe Crisis Management® (SCM) Staff Training Curriculum. This curriculum is focused on supporting individuals in their life experience along with the prevention and safe resolution of challenging and sometimes dangerous behaviors.

Since its origin in 1984, the company has evolved from a local and juvenile justice focused organization to an International training firm providing a wide range of staff training programs to the field of human service and education. Whether you are working with oppositional and defiant individuals or emotionally disruptive individuals, SCM provides staff with a capacity to prevent or safely respond to dangerous situations.

Using state of the art information and materials delivered by an elite group of professional instructors, JKM Training, Inc. provides service delivery system personnel with the capacity to “Make a Difference!”

Comprehensive: Using proven human relationship and communication techniques, SCM is based on established theory of human development. The SCM curriculum adapts easily to the uniqueness of each individual’s gender, age, personal strengths and limitations. The service of all populations are addressed through this humanistic approach.

Flexible: The curriculum has a number of core concepts that apply to almost all situations and individuals.

These are surrounded by supporting elements. We don’t demand you teach everything we offer. You can flex the curriculum to meet your population and program mission.

State of the Art: SCM is based on established theory and methods that are verified by its acceptance as appropriate by all legal authority and standard setting groups in the United States. In addition, it has the distinction of BILD Accreditation in the United Kingdom, as well as, the endorsement of numerous professional service groups. Public Training Seminars

Prevention Support Strategies SCM teaches that the primary foundation of successful behavior management is the development of positive relationships with the individuals served. Relationship building is therefore a key prevention strategy. The use of clear behavioral expectations, coupled with reinforcing program components, will prevent a great deal of challenging behavior.

De-escalation Support Strategies SCM offers a wide array of de-escalation strategies that are formulated into discussion and direction categories.

Primary in the de-escalation process is the interruption of negative energy to allow a collaborative problem solving experience to occur. Successful de-escalation requires self-regulation of counter-aggressive instincts which often prompts higher levels of distress.

Emergency Safety Support Strategies The Emergency Safety Physical Intervention strategies are based on the principle of the “least restrictive alternative”. The continuum of interventions have been reviewed by five medical groups and deemed safe. The interventions provide a capacity to respond safely to differences in age, size, weight and level of aggression.

These interventions are used only when actual conditions of “harm to self or others” are present.

It is our intent to strongly support the advocacy for Restraint Reduction by equipping staff with prevention and de-escalation skills.

MATERIALS & ACCESS Safe Crisis Management Instructor Training is supported by a set of professional materials which includes an instructor’s manual, a participant workbook, along with exclusive access to the SCM Instructor’s website. This site includes all of the materials needed to conduct in-house SCM Training.

After Action Support Resolution All crisis behavior management situations present an excellent opportunity for positive personal development.

While these opportunities are clearly evident in successful prevention and de-escalation, they are most clear in the after action resolution process - debriefing. Here an established interaction format is used to assist individuals in reviewing their actions and developing a collaborative plan for positive difference.

PRACTICE BASED EVIDENCE Curriculum Content

SCM is a comprehensive behavior management and support training curriculum. Currently, in education and human services, the quest to use “Evidence Based Programming” is fast becoming the standard. The efficacy of SCM or any other crisis intervention training program cannot be measured using experimental control groups. We would not choose to prevent some potentially harmful behavior while allowing other potentially harmful behavior to occur; or to de-escalate some crisis situation and not others. SCM must be measured by other means.

Safe Crisis Management® employs Evidence Based components. The curriculum includes Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, Functional Based Assessment and Behavior Support Planning, Active Listening verbal intervention, Life Space Intervention debriefing, Polsky’s Social structure and the Olweus Bully Behavior models.

These researched and published elements are complemented with a variety of established intervention and communication techniques used routinely in human services.
