“These pillars of engagement that are here are incredibly exciting…I think this is cause for celebration. For what does our country need the most right now? It needs people connected to civic affairs, to government, to collective enterprises, who are engaged with the deepest questions and who are using them to shape outcomes.” -Dr. Michael Signer, Madison Vision Series speaker

JMU Growth and Development

2014-2020 Six Year Institutional Plan

IN 2012 work began on the university’s new strategic plan, which will encompass this six-year plan and introduce new core qualities and goals in support of our mission. As our new plan comes into final focus in the fall of 2013, we will be emphasizing academic quality, engagement, and accessibility as we prepare for the needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth well into the future. Important areas of consideration for future enrollment projections through 2020 include: • On- and off-campus headcount is projected to grow from 19,927 to 21,272 (+7%). • In-state student headcount is projected to grow from 13,906 to 15,124 (+9%). • The percentage of undergraduates from outof-state is projected to decline from 27.8% to 26.2%. • Degree-seeking graduate student headcount is projected to increase from 1,512 to 1,643 (+9%).

The two core qualities that incorporate engagement include the following: • “A highly motivated and qualified workforce is always a key asset to the university’s success.” That is, a key part of becoming highly motivated is being engaged not only in our jobs but also with our JMU community as well as a greater community. A collaborative relationship, each sharing ideas will strengthen the university’s vision of an engaged institution. • “Intercollegiate Athletics contributes to a vibrant student experience bringing pride, positive energy and national exposure to the university. Student-athletes will experience a holistic program emphasizing personal development, academic achievement, civic engagement, and competitive excellence.” This core quality cannot be achieved without the student athlete becoming engaged with ideas and the community. As with all students, our mission is to prepare educated and enlightened students and to accomplish this we provide opportunities for students to engage with ideas and with the community. We accomplish this with our student athletes through their many outreach events they hold for children and non-profit organizations.

Core Qualities of JMU’s Strategic Plan for 2014-2020 Strategic planning is the process of determining what an organization intends to accomplish and how it will direct resources to support those intended accomplishments. In that way, the strategic plan is a bridge between the status quo and desired future. JMU’s strategic plan will guide the university’s investment of resources (of all types) from July 2014 through June 2020. The strategic plan is made up of Core Qualities, Attendant Goals and Objectives:

New Vision Core Quality: Student Life & Success We support student academic and career success by providing opportunities to apply learning and development, practice good citizenship, foster health and wellness, and live in community.

Thoughts about this core Quality The Internal Analysis Team of the Madison Future Commission learned that JMU constituents desire that the university continue to be known as a place where the whole student is developed. That means the pursuit of academic quality, to be sure, but it is also the broader development of the student as citizen in keeping with our mission statement. This was a reason that one committee of the MFC was devoted to Student Life & Success. In light of this, the University Planning Team and MFC committee chairs drafted this core quality. This core quality also supports and reflects our student-focus value.

11A Goal

University Goals

The university will ensure that student life and success functions bridge and balance curricular and co-curricular efforts, extending academic and experiential learning with application and reflection.

11b Goal The university will provide high quality, research-based, nationally recognized student support programs and services.

11c Goal The university will provide high quality advising, services and programs that directly support students’ career and professional development goals and desired outcomes following graduation.

our LIAiSONs

Our CAP liaisons work with students every day to help guide them in all aspects of career readiness. On the flip side, students share their thoughts and expectations when considering internships or full time opportunities with future employers. Here, our liaisons have shared a collection of student perspectives of what makes employers stand out.

“Students generally connect well with employers who engage in multiple ways – post jobs in RAD; come for Resume PREP, practice interviews, on-campus recruiting interviews, career fairs, information sessions, etc. – it allows students to see that they’re really invested in hiring JMU students and it helps the students make good connections with recruiters- An example of this I’ve heard from students is Capital One with the MadHack being of particular emphasis of unique engagement here at JMU – they’ve made it clear that they’re more than a bank but have interest in STEM/Tech students and my liaison students have appreciated this.”

“Some students can’t afford to take unpaid internships so it’s fantastic when companies can offer paid opportunities or funded scholarships so students from all backgrounds have a chance to gain internship experience.”

“Students have appreciated opportunities to visit company sites for learning tours.”

“Students have started following companies on LinkedIn and appreciate when companies are active with company updates, job postings, and recruiting efforts via this platform.”

“I have heard a number of my students say they would love to find a job in which the employer would help with financing graduate education. For example, about 1/3 of the chemistry majors seek employment after graduation (the rest go to grad or professional school) but many of them plan to go to grad school after building up savings and gaining professional experience. So they are definitely interested in finding employers that would partner with them on that process.”

“Students have said they love when companies send alumni back to campus for recruiting and information sessions because they have the unique ability to relate to the JMU experience and can share their own career journey and advice.”

“My students are excited to hear when a company’s initiatives and objectives aligned with their interests and experiences.”

Land the Job:

Career fair and Resume prep Recap 2015 Spring Career & Internship Fair: February 18th and 26th, 2015 Spring 2015: While unpredictable weather in the valley caused last minute decisions to be made, the snow couldn’t stop the 2015 fair from going off. The bi-annual Career and Internship Fair was held over two days, February 18th and make-up snow day February 26th. The fair was held on campus in the Festival Ballroom with the event open to all academic majors. Over the two fair days, we had a total of 166 registered employers seeking students from every major. We saw students from all majors ranging from freshman to graduate students in attendance.

fall 2014 resume prep: september 8, 2014 ResumePREP provided an opportunity for students to have their resume reviewed by experienced professionals in a casual, relaxed environment. Professional reviewers in attendance were recruiters from various companies, and staff from Career & Academic Planning. Students arrived with a copy of their resume and had a personal review on a first-come first-served basis. This is a great opportunity for students to prepare their resume for the Career Fair and for employers to give back to the JMU Community in a fun and valuable way!

SMAD IN LA JMU in LA provides undergraduates a chance to learn about, and participate in, one the most powerful cultural forces in our world today: the entertainment industry. This is a highly competitive 9-credit summer program organized by the School of Media Arts and Design. Students take classes taught by industry professionals and work at internships in Los Angeles. Twenty rising junior and seniors are selected to participate each summer. Students live and work in the entertainment capital of the world in Oakwood Corporate Housing. Oakwood is located in Burbank, CA, and houses professionals working at nearby Warner Brothers, Universal, Paramount and Disney studios and major television networks. Below is a map of where JMU students held internships in summer 2014 of part of the program.

From Tom O'Connor The director of JMU in LA

“In 2010 the JMU’s School of Media Arts sent me to Los Angeles to investigate the possibility of starting a program that would give our students the opportunity to live and work in the entertainment capital of the world. The following spring we had 50 some students apply for 20 spots. The next year we had 60 applicants, and that’s been the case every year. The program is essentially boot camp for finding jobs: students learn independence,

discipline, and how to market themselves to major companies in LA. So far, each of our students in the JMU in LA Program, some one hundred students, have gotten internships in what is perhaps the most competitive highprofile industry in the world. Out of those 100 students, at least half are living and working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. The other half are working in the entertainment industry outside of LA.” A JMU SMAD professor that

Student spotlight: adam okimatsu During my junior year at JMU I participated in the JMU in LA study abroad program. During my time in the program I got an internship, working at an Independent Film Company in Hollywoodliterally on Hollywood Blvd. The program was only in its 2nd year in 2012, so the internship process was a little tougher. Mr. and Mrs. O’Connor did help a lot though, providing links to entertainment job websites, which is where I eventually found my internship. My experience working in LA was very 1-on-1. It was me and the producer/director/ writer of the company in his office most days. He had just finished post-production of a

film called Rough Hustle, so my day-to-day responsibilities consisted of contacting different marketing agencies all over the area to try and convince them to distribute the film in theatres and on DVD. I also ran the company’s social media presence. The program as a whole was great. The Oakwood Apartmentswhere we stayed for 2 months- were awesome; right across the street from Warner Bros Studios. I also really liked the size of the group. There were 20 of us which made it just small enough where we all really got to know each other and learn and grow from each others experiences in different work environments. Since my experience in 2012, JMU in LA has been built out

even further. Now, the program is more established with more relationships throughout Los Angeles.

“We all really got to know each other and learn and grow from each others experiences in different work environments. “

My career now- email marketer- didn’t originally correlate with my time in LA. However, I currently produce short and feature films and I still am in contact with the producer/director that I worked for in LA. He has remained helpful throughout the past 3 years and has been willing to give his advice and feedback on all my projects since I worked with him. The relationship created is what I value most out of the trip.
