A Note from Jori The JMU Architectural Design program is full of talented and fearless question-askers, makers and explorers. Our unique program draws on the artistic inclinations of remarkably ambitious students to create work in the architectural imaginary. The ethos of our studios is exploration, experimentation, process rigor, craft, courage, and a belief that architecture contributes to society through space, form and time.

Our students are a new kind of architectural student.

Our graduates will shape a new kind of architectural practice.

The class of 2020 is presenting their body of work as proof of concept for a paradigm in architectural education that gives equal energy to the traditional crafts of drawing and modeling by hand with the ever evolving craft of digital production. They have been patient, impatient, resilient, intense, focused, productive,and provocative throughout the many transitions they have witnessed. As they graduate and disperse in various directions, we wish them all the best, as they have shared their best with us.

Webster Allen Minor Studio Art webster.allen77@gmail.com Webster plans to pursue a career in architecture plus, either construction management, or real estate development for a year.

Then he will attend graduate school to earn a masters in architecture, and minor in construction management or development. Ultimately he is working toward owning his own architecture firm.

African Diaspora line weight study, conducted in order to understand various african design.

Shot gun housing program, family unit design for the low income residents of Anacostia Washington D.C. who struggle with affordable housing.

This project is a Caravanserai for Jihadist women in Peshawar, Pakistan. Women play a very important role in every society, however, they have been taken advantage of by brainwashed extremist socalled Muslim men. This project hopes for a free space for families to collaborate and learn from each other on veiled spaces.

Mishail Amjad Minor Studio Art mishmishmirza@gmail.com Mishail hopes to find a better future for her country, Pakistan. She intends on raising her son, Daoud, the way she would hope for future generations of Pakistani men to be raised.

Owning her own firm is her dream.

This model shows the interactions of families with one another and children interacting with the veiled spaces.

These images are a series of exploratory drawings of past caravanserais. The text is taken from the book Caravanserai by Tom Schutyser and the drawings portray contradictions to the author.

This section shows the relationship of the Caravanserai with the Indus River and the Attock Fort. The veiled spaces will be closer to the River water and evolve over time as children learn how to embroider and collborate with each other.

This image shows the relationship of the Caravanserai to the old Attock Fort built by Mughal emperor Akbar. This river was traveled by traders, merchants and kings, however, it was also traveled by Taliban from Afghanistan. The project intends to erase the wounds caused by Taliban with a new light to this region with rich history.

The project attempts to meet the demand of public housing in Yangon, Myanmar. As in most countries, buildings no longer possess quality, uniqueness and innovation as the housing becomes more and more focused towards financial profits. The figure shows the elevation of the social-housing thesis project. Prioritizing cultural identity, innovation and sustainability as the main drivers in the project. Semi-transparent solars are integrated into a kinetic facade designed in order to attain more usable space and adjustable climate control in the building. Through the design, each unit has its own park that’s either one quarter or half the size of the apartment. The building also has rain water collection systems, a hydroponics farm and an automated parking system underground.

He is working towards his goal and is open to offers/ opportunities that will allow him to have creative freedom in what he does.

Jaime Dunlap jkldunlap@gmail After graduation, Jaime will be attending the Rhode Island School of Design to earn her Master of Architecture. After that, she hopes to work in the field earning experience toward her architecture license.

Digital collage, elevation. The thesis re-imagines the US-Mexico border as a threshold - a transitional space between the two countries. It aims to evolve the border wall from something of separation to one of unity and positive engagement. The architecture was placed between the slats of the border wall and is comprised of a base structure with Monarch Butterfly, bird, and human components.

Model of proposed design intervention within the Hudson Navy Yard. The final model was inspired by the burial of okra seeds after they fall from the seed pod. Over time, the earth slowly covers the seed. In the same manner, the design aimed to be slowly covered and uncovered by the water as the tide changed. The site model as well as building models were made to reflect the position and form of the building concept.

Zachari Haverkamp Minor Studio Art and Art History ZHaverkamp@outlook.com Zachari currently works in an interior design firm in Richmond, Va. She plans to work in an architecture firm in Virginia within the year.

She intends to go to grad school.

A resilience center as a multi-modal transportation hub and recreation center which would double as a post disaster center and an evacuation center.

This is a site study aimed at understanding the movement within the site in Hampton, Va. It indicates the differences between pedestrian, vehicular, and aerial movement.

An extensive drawing study explored the unstable grounds of the Batagaika Crater in Siberia. This resulted in an intervention that explored how architecture can occupy a shifting landscape.

Andrew Hertlein Minor Studio Art and Art History a.hertlein98@gmail.com Andrew is moving home to New York to look for work.

Eventually he plans to return to school to pursue a Masters in Architecture.

Process began with mappings on plywood of the Tiber River. These studies ultimately led to an ecological intervention at the mouth of the river.

Large concrete “reefs� developed a new coastal environment. The water would be allowed to partially reclaim some of its former territory, turning the river mouth into a marshy estuary.

Sited on the East River in NYC, this ferry pier’s exterior structure doubles as community garden.

Form and function were both developed based off a meticulous study of coral species.

With partner Olivia Marino, this structure was designed and built to be the ‘body’ of a Senufo tribal mask. The body’s ‘skin’ contained reflective properties to emphasize light, an important element in Senufo ritual practices.

Taylor Knabel Minor Studio Art tknabel98@gmail.com Taylor plans to work as an interior designer at an interior design and furniture dealership in Virginia. She intends to take graphic design classes at Virginia Commonwealth University and go to grad school after a few years in the industry.

Final site models on Brooklyn Navy Yard Dry Dock site model, made from melted acrylic and aluminum wire. Experimentation with trash bags and rubber bands influenced the final forms and how they begin to occupy the site. The wire represents legs that attach to the sides of the land that are submerged in water, helping reduce the amount of flooding and storm surges that occur and protect the buildings from flood damage.

Different model tracings overlap to help form the overall structure of the building. While the top folds catch rain and possible hurricane water, an underground system from the mosquito system learns to absorb dirty water nearby, then takes it to the top and allows the water to filter through the building with the rest of the water.

Alessia Kunkel General Business Minor alessiakunkel97@gmail.com Alessia will be attending Cornell University in the fall to receive her Masters in Architecture for the next three and a half years. She plans to work in New York City after graduating.

Creating a memorable experience for people while they cleaned up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A key component of the project was taking over old abondened oil rigs off the coast of California to act as a central hub for sorting and cleaning plastics.

Mason Lowen Minor Studio Art mlowen42@gmail.com Mason has been accepted into Virginia Tech for the fall of 2020 to get his Master’s in Architecture.

The journey was a major focus in the project.

Every step someone takes on the oil rig is to be a journey. This included massive ramps that would lead to the top of the oil rig.

Pre-thesis ideas of walking structures to going deep into the garbage patch and clean up the 80,000 tons of plastic.

Getting the public involved was important for the project. Making others remember why they’re here cleaning will make a lasting impression.

Caitlin Morgan Minor Studio Art caitmarcd20@outlook.com Caitlin’s thesis has taught her the significance of place and human connection in architecture. She’s looking forward to spending time finding herself as an architect so she can eventually attend grad school and find a community that she loves.

These four mechanisms provide resources for humans on the planet Mars, whether it is technology, nutrition, or mental peace.

This project grew from a series of conceptual drawings that pushed ideas of structure and system to form a design language.

A continuous theme of limited resources, human condition, and relating architecture to its environment can also be applied to communities on Earth when rebuilding areas affected by poverty and war.

A facility in which a community can thrive.

To provide nutrition and fresh water to communities.

Lily Owusu-Ansah Minor Studio Art lily.owusu.ansah98@gmail.com Lily plans to work in a non-profit architecture firm focused on the performing arts in Virginia. She intends to go to grad school.

Plan for a proposed clinic in Agbogbloshie, Ghana. The clinic will help especially with the employees at the Agbogbloshie scrapyard that inhale dangerous toxins every day.

Placing the elevation in the site itself, the Agbogbloshie scrapyard. The bridge would be used by citizens and employees alike.

Reimagining and repurposing wasted building materials was the drive behind this work. Materials inclue: concrete, latex, and steel. They are meant to contrast and compliment each other at the same time.

She intends to teach younger generations about culture, the environment, and themselves.

This project proposes implementing a school and playground in a contested area in Yemen. The ongoing civil war in Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis to date, and the children are most vulnerable to suffering damaging consequences of this war. Giving life back to war torn and abandonded buildings in the form of education and play in turn gives life back to Yemeni children and the bright future they are at risk of losing.
