For 27 years, EXPO has been a premiere high school marching band competition in the capital city of the State of North Carolina!
Our preliminary and finals format allows all musicians and visual artists to display their talent and hard work, culminating in the presentation of the prestigious Capital Cup to our Grand Champion.
EXPO was one of the first events to use North Carolina Music Educators Association and North Carolina Bandmasters Association adopted Adjudication Procedures in order to bring consistency to judging standards.
The Sanderson Band Boosters partners with community sponsors and over 250 volunteers to ensure an enjoyable competition for participants, instructors, families and fans.
Our beautiful Gregson Stadium has expansive seating for fans and vehicle accessibility for a wide range of props and instrument delivery.
We work hard to make sure everyone leaves EXPO feeling like a Champion!

As proud principal of Sanderson High School, I am quite honored to welcome your participation in our Capital City Band EXPO. This is Sanderson’s 27th year of hosting the Capital City EXPO which certainly speaks to our commitment of celebrating and honoring students’ gifts and talents. Our band boosters, staff, students, and community have spent hours preparing for your arrival.
It is my privilege to welcome the band directors. Your overall dedication in preparing for this event is appreciated, as well as your belief in the benefits of band programs. Additionally, I want to personally welcome and thank the parents who sacrifice both your time and energy to support young people’s desire to participate in band. I also would like to welcome the students who spend countless hours rehearsing and preparing to entertain and showcase their collective efforts as a band.
Thanks again for participating in our EXPO. We are so excited to host you. I know you will enjoy the beauty and pageantry of the EXPO experience.
Respectfully,
Tara Drouhard Principal Sanderson High School
On behalf of the Sanderson High School Bands and Ensembles, the Band Booster organization and over 250 volunteers working here today, welcome to The Capital City Band EXPO 2024, and our exciting evening event, The Capital Cup finals competition. It is a privilege to have you as our guests. Twenty-six years ago when the Sanderson band family decided to host a high school marching band competition, we did so with high goals in mind. We wanted the Capital City Band EXPO to be a special event where outstanding high school musicians and visual artists can display their talent and hard work. We also wanted EXPO to be one of the best marching band competitions in the state. With the change in 2004 to a preliminary and finals format, combined with the presentation of The Capital Cup to our Grand Champion, we believe we are achieving our goals.
Over the last twenty-seven years, EXPO has grown into a major high school event. This has been possible only with the help of many partners. First and foremost, EXPO could not happen without the support we have received from band directors and band booster organizations around the state. The decision to bring your students to EXPO is sincerely appreciated. Second, EXPO could not have grown to where it is today without the support of our corporate sponsors. Our sponsors’ financial support has allowed us to attract nationally recognized adjudicators to ensure objective and unbiased evaluation of participating bands. Third, our booster organization and many volunteers allow us to have first class logistical support for all bands and spectators. The Sanderson band family spends hundreds of hours planning and carrying out today’s activities. Finally, a special part of EXPO is the beautiful
Gregson Stadium. We are thankful to the Wake County Public School System and the Sanderson administration and staff for allowing us to use the Sanderson facilities and for their support of EXPO.
We are proud that EXPO was one of the first events to use the North Carolina Music Educators Association and North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association adopted Adjudication Procedures. We applaud the NCMEA and the NCBA for their efforts to bring consistency to the judging standards of marching competitions in our state.
We want to recognize and commend all of the student performers in competing bands for their dedication, discipline, and tireless commitment to their programs. We know you will enjoy the opportunity to share your show with all of us as well as appreciate the performances of others. The performances today are a testament to the daily hard work that the students, parents, and directors do in North Carolina. Thank you for joining us today, and we hope that you have a fantastic experience at EXPO!
Sincerely,
Mitchell Townley, Director of Bands Sanderson High School
