Span-101: First Year Spanish I Remote Learning COURSE DESCRIPTION: ¡Bienvenidos a español 101! This is a fast-paced elementary-level course designed for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. The primary goal of Spanish 101 is to introduce basic Spanish grammar; present tense conjugations, and vocabulary are organized around cultural topics and communicative situations to improve the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

Together with the remote class periods and usual work in groups, proficiency is enhanced through technology in the classroom (e.g. Kahoot for self-assessment) as well as through the important online Workbook/Lab Manual component for homework.

Remote learning may be uncharted territory for many students and instructors, which means that patience and excellent communication will be really important to enjoy the experience maximizing your learning and success. In other words, practice kindness with peers as well as with your instructors.

Bear in mind that learning a foreign language is demanding and cumulative in nature; thus, given that a considerable amount of material is covered in a relatively short period of time, you should keep up with the weekly work pace. Learning a foreign language is demanding and cumulative in nature, since a considerable amount of material is covered in a relatively short period of time. You are strongly encouraged to seek help from your instructor at the first sign of difficulty, and to keep up with the work daily ______________________________________________________________________________ 15% Attendance and Participation Successful progress in a language course requires that students keep up with all assignments and class discussions. For this reason, there is a daily attendance policy included as part of each student’s participation grade. However, not all participation is considered equal, an active participation* is crucial in learning new contents. The student will receive two participation grades corresponding to the mid-term (7.5%) and end of term (7.5%). *Active participation means the ability and willingness to demonstrate that a student has studied the vocabulary and grammar assigned daily on Connetct, and that a student has read and reflected upon the readings when assigned.

Attendance: The attendance is mandatory: students are required to attend all classes. Missing classes will affect your attendance and participation grade proportionally to the number of absences. absences calculated by a rule of three (the proportion is found by multiplying the denominator of each ratio by the numerator of the other). Excessive absenteeism (8 or more unjustified absences) is ground for failure in this course.

Excused absences: Students have one week to hand in the pertinent documentation after having missed class. This needs to be done through the Student Absence Notification System (SANS).

If you are missing class for an unplanned, extenuating circumstance (e.g. physical/mental health matters, death of a loved one, legal obligations/jury duty, etc.) please fill out and submit the form below. Once submitted, all of your faculty members will be notified of your absence. PROCESS: Students submit a SANS request on the SSA website. SSA staff then monitor the submissions and notify the student’s faculty of the absence through WCS. SSA staff also send the student an email informing them a notice has been sent to their faculty. This email also includes instructions that it is the student’s responsibility to follow up with their faculty member to discuss if work missed during the absence may be made up. Both on the form and the emails to students, we clearly state that this process does not excuse the student from the class, and it is up to the faculty member to determine if and when missing work may be completed. After the notices are sent, we record on the SANS form the date the emails were sent and keep the file on record.

Missed Content: Students are responsible for all the work missed on days that they were absent.

They should firstly ask a classmate to make up the missed materials thus benefiting a collaborative class environment. The professor will also be available to inform the students by email as well as during office hours.

20% Connect’s Homework and Quizzes Homework is assigned on a regular basis including all four languages skills. Students must study the grammatical points assigned and then complete grammar exercises on Connect. Activities include watching tutorials for grammar explanations. See class calendar in this Syllabus for further details and see also homework deadlines on Connect. (*The professor may also announce additional homework and share recorded explanations as/when convenient to meet the group’s needs.)

20% Compositions on Google Doc Four compositions of about 80 words will be assigned throughout the term and evaluated according to the student’s ability to use Spanish appropriately. These compositions correspond thematically with each chapter’s A escuchar + Producción personal.

Name your Google Doc as follows “Span 101, Compositions, your name” Please make sure that you grant editorial permission as opposed to view; You will need to click on “Advance” to check “Sharing settings” when they offer you the “Done” button in blue.

15% Oral Interview Students will have an oral interview with their professor (15%). On the day indicated in the syllabus, students will meet individually, or in pairs with their professor to speak in Spanish for 8-10 minutes about topics covered throughout the term. See rubric included in this syllabus regarding the grading criteria. There will be no make-ups.

30% Chapter Exams and Final Exam To assess the progress of students there will be three (3) exams corresponding to two chapters exams and the final exam. The first exam will cover chapters 1-2 (10%); the second exam will cover chapters 3-4 (10%); The final exam will be cumulative (10%) including chapter 5. Make-ups for these exams require excusing your absence through SANS. 5% Extra Credit Opportunity for Asynchronous Conversation Sessions for Practice These sessions will be conducted on Flipped Grid. Students need to participate actively and meaningfully to receive extra credit. There will be five sessions. Each session is worth 1%. Further instructions are provided on each session. *Another opportunity to gain 5% additional extra credit will be offer by the end of the term.

ACADEMIC HONESTY Code of Student Responsibility: 574-031-0030 Specific Standards and Policies: The following list of prohibited forms of conduct is not all-inclusive since it is not possible to list all potential violations.

The University requires that all students behave in a manner congruent with established community standards and in a manner conductive to the development of the individual. Actions detrimental to the mission of the University and the legitimate activities of the academic community, which constitute the University, are in violation of this Code and may be subject to judicial procedures.

1) Academic dishonesty, which includes but is not limited to: (a) Cheating- intentional use or attempted use of artifice, deception, fraud, and/or misrepresentations of one’s academic work; (b) Fabrication- unauthorized falsification and/or invention of any information of citation in any academic exercise; (c) Facilitating dishonesty – helping or attempting to help another person commit an act of academic dishonesty. This includes students who substitute for other persons in examinations or represent as their own papers, reports, or any other academic work of others; (d) Plagiarism- representing without giving credit the words, data, or ideas of another person as one’s own work in any academic exercise. This includes submitting, in whole or in part, prewritten term papers of another of research of another, including but not limited product of commercial vendor who sell or distribute such materials. And the appropriation of and/or use of electronic data of another person or persons as one’s own, or using such data without giving proper credit for it; or (e) Any use or attempted use of electronic devices in gaining an illegal advantage in academic work in which use of these devices is prohibited, and such devices include but are not limited to cell phones, PDAs, laptops, programmable calculators, etc.

PLAGIARISM Academic honesty requires that all course work a student presents to an instructor honestly and accurately indicates the student's own academic efforts. It is inappropriate to engage in any activity that might constitute academic misconduct.

Some examples include but are not limited to cutting and pasting from the web without proper citation, paraphrasing from the web or other sources without crediting such source, and using another person's ideas, words or research and presenting it as one's own. This includes computer-based translations.

TURNITIN SOFTWARE Plagiarism is the unattributed use of words, ideas, or other intellectual products that are not your own work. Plagiarism is a violation of the Code of Student Responsibility. WOU instructors use Turnitin, a plagiarism detection and learning tool that is now integrated with Moodle, to identify the percentage of similarities of your writing to journal articles, internet sources and other students' papers in its database. It then generates reports for instructors highlighting potentially unoriginal work.

The use of Turnitin is subject to the Privacy Pledge and Policy posted on Turnitin.com, and you will retain all rights to your written work.

COVID-19 Statements The following statement should be included for all classes with in-person meetings. However, most of the information is valuable for all students, regardless of the modality of any specific course.

Face Coverings The purpose of WOU’s Face Coverings Policy is to promote the health and safety of students, staff, faculty and the broader community. WOU requires employees (faculty and staff), students, visitors, contractors, and volunteers at both its Monmouth and Salem campuses to use face coverings, which include paper or cloth masks, medical-grade masks, or face shields, when in enclosed public and common areas on campus and outdoor areas where physical distancing of at least six (6) feet is not easily maintained, unless an exception is met. Face coverings should be worn in combination with other measures, such as strict physical distancing and proper hand washing.

When used with standard distancing and hygiene measures, face coverings serve as a central public health measure to reduce the spread of infection across all university settings. Face coverings are particularly important in spaces where physical distancing may be difficult, or when working in enclosed spaces shared by other people, with the exception of immediate family or household members (e.g., partner, child, or parents).

While cloth face coverings will not provide full protection for individuals wearing them, those that cover the nose and mouth in ways consistent with health authority guidelines will help prevent the spread of the virus in the community when used in combination with physical distancing and proper hand washing.

Please note that there are many valid reasons that an individual may be unable to wear a face covering, including numerous health conditions. Students should not confront other students about their face coverings. You may also report your concerns to Campus Public Safety here: https://form.jotform.com/200826499819065 Be prepared for remote delivery All WOU courses will be remote after Wednesday, Nov. 25th, including final exams. However, due to ever-changing conditions with COVID-19, students and faculty should be prepared for the possibility that in-person courses might be switched to remote delivery at any time.

Attendance In order to facilitate contact tracing in case someone in our class tests positive for COVID-19, attendance will be taken for every class meeting. Please be sure to record your name on the sign-in sheet when you enter the classroom.

In the case of illness that will keep you from attending class, you should submit a student absence notification request form at: www.wou.edu/advising/absence. This form allows the Student Success and Advising office to relay the information regarding your absence to faculty members in a timely manner. The notification sent to your faculty will serve as a courtesy notice and does not excuse your absence. It will still be your responsibility to communicate with your instructor to discuss any work missed during your absence. Information submitted through the Student Absence Notification System must be truthful in accordance with the Student Code of Responsibility.

What to do if you are contacted by a contact tracer?

Contact tracers call people who may have had contact with someone who tested positive for COVID19. We want everyone to feel safe answering the call from a contact tracer.

First, you should know your information is strictly confidential and will be treated as a confidential public health record. Your information will not be shared with other agencies, including immigration officials.

If a contact tracer is unable to reach you, they will leave a voicemail and request that you call back.

The voicemail will not contain any health information.

If a contact tracer calls you, here’s what they will ask: • • • • • •

For your name, date of birth and where you live If you need an interpreter in a language other than English For race, ethnicity, language and disability information If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 If you need a place to stay or have other needs to help you stay at home If they can contact you daily to monitor your symptoms and needs

Contact tracers will not ask for your: • • •

Social security number Immigration status Credit card number, bank account or billing information

If anyone calls you requesting this information, hang up. They are not part of local or state contact tracing efforts.

If you test positive for COVID-19, please call the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC; 503838-8313) to inform them of your positive test. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is important for WOU to know about positive tests in our community.

What to do if you are feeling sick?

If you are feeling ill, stay home and do not go to class or work. Please call the WOU Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC; 503-838-8313), or your preferred health care provider if you experience COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, cough or shortness of breath. Your questions will be answered by phone, and if necessary you will be directed to the best medical option, which might be an in-office visit, telemedicine, or a referral to urgent care. It is important that you call first as the SHCC will be working with students who have prior appointments and you may unnecessarily expose other students—or yourself be exposed—to COVID-19.

Your health care provider will also determine whether COVID-19 testing is appropriate based on symptoms and test availability in their area. The Oregon Health Authority has published a COVID19 test site locator to help people in Oregon find testing sites in their community. The interactive map is available on pages in both English and Spanish and can be toggled into multiple other languages: healthoregon.org/covid19testing (English) healthoregon.org/pruebasdecovid19 (Spanish) You may also call the SHCC if you just have questions about possible exposure to COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19. Any student eligible for services can call the SHCC whether they live on or off campus.

Any student enrolled in one or more credits for in-person or hybrid courses automatically pays the SHCC fee and is eligible to receive care on campus. Students enrolled only in online classes do not pay the SHCC fee and are therefore not eligible for care; however, if you are in Oregon, you can choose to pay the fee anyway and access SHCC services. The fee starting is $145 per term. If you are currently out-of-state, please call the SHCC to see if you are eligible for services because medical providers face restrictions on practicing across state borders.
