President’s Report
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the May 2024 edition of the Dogs Victoria Magazine. This month we are featuring the Schipperke. A loyal and intelligent dog originating in Belgium, where it patrolled the many barges along the country’s network of waterways. In Australia, you can see them participating in, among other things, conformation dog shows, obedience, rally and agility trials. The breed is growing in popularity, no doubt assisted by a core of knowledgeable breeders. There are some terrific examples of the breed here in Victoria.
I want to acknowledge Arthur Wilson’s continued contribution. During the pandemic, Arthur accepted the onerous invitation to manage the Roving Dog Show Committee, which was formed to step in and run shows in place of those that would have otherwise been cancelled during Covid. The shows held over this year’s Easter holidays at KCC Park were very successful, a testament to the committee and to Arthur’s wise leadership. These shows were rescued by Arthur’s team and are now a staple of our event’s annual calendar.
This month’s magazine also includes an acknowledgement by Dawn Howard of the extraordinary effort made by volunteers to make this year’s Autumn FOO’s event such a great event. In case you didn’t know FOO’s stands for “Friends of Obedience”. The event is run by OTEC but it is another example of how Dogs Victoria couldn’t operate without our army of volunteers.
An interesting article on 11 different ways to “break a sweat” with your dog (printed with permission of the American Kennel Club) is also included in this edition. The article provides some helpful tips for owners to have fun whilst exercising their dogs and at the same time improve their own wellbeing.
I would also like to thank all the breed clubs who participated at the recent Pet Show and helped create an amazing event. These events are great opportunities to generate awareness of our purebred dog breeds, clubs and the importance of the ethical breeding of the breeds we love.
Management committee updates:
• The Governance Lead Committee and CR&R (Constitution Rules & Regulations Committee) have been asked to provide advice to management committee regarding a refund policy should an event be cancelled due to extreme weather or other unforeseen event, like a sudden pandemic lockdown. Management committee acknowledged the

issues raised by both affiliates and members, with both arguments being legitimate. For members, the issue is that they have paid to enter an event and should receive recompense when the event is cancelled, and no alternative is possible. For the club, the issue is often that money has already been expended on various things, such as judges fees, judges air travel and accommodation (sometimes the judges may have already arrived), prizes, ribbons, venue hire, catering, cleaning, etc. There are also the governing consumer laws to take into account. Hopefully, the advice received will result in a win/win with some give and take from both sides of the argument.
• Management committee approved the request received from the Bulla Amenities Show Committee to hold a FCI CACIB and A2O show in 2025, 2026, 2027 & 2028.
• Management committee accepted the resignation of James Patchett from the Bulla Facilities Committee and expressed their thanks for his contribution as the chair of the committee. James has always given his all as a volunteer, always acting only in the interests of the Bulla facility during has time as chair. We now welcome the appointment of Keith Fallow and wish him every success in overseeing this great facility.
• Management committee nominated Dawn Ayton as the Victorian representative for the national membership strategy working party.
Last words:
Finally, this will be my last column as President of Dogs Victoria, as I have not sought re-election.
It has been, without a doubt, a very challenging four years, dominated by a once-in-a-century pandemic. As a community, we successfully implemented all the statutory safety requirements requested by Victoria’s State authorities. Again, our volunteers stepped up, drawing up procedures, becoming Covid marshals, manning checkpoints at the entry to events, regularly sanitising washrooms, etc. The processes we put in place enabled many dog events to continue outside of full lockdowns. The whole operation was a credit to our members.
Despite everything Covid threw at us, Dogs Victoria survived and remains in a financially sound position. While our membership has marginally declined (as it has in every state across the country), we have regained the position of the largest state body under the Dogs Australia umbrella measured by number of members.
* Continued on page two

Remaining Challenges:
I’ll mention just a couple. I am particularly disappointed that I can’t report to you that the PFAS contaminated soil wrongfully dumped at the rear of KCC Park before I became president has been removed without cost to Dogs Victoria. This was the position I strongly held when I first became president and reported to members. The issue has been an ongoing pain point throughout my presidency. When the removal option became impossible, I held (and still do) the position that Dogs Victoria should be reimbursed for any remedial action taken to cap the affected area (small as it is, but expensive nonetheless). This work was completed in April 2024, making the area safe for both humans and animals. Dogs Victoria has sought advice and will continue to pursue compensation from those who contaminated our site.
Another challenge confronts our association. Whilst probably not a serious threat right now, it could evolve into one. Like society in general, Dogs Victoria has not been immune from the rise in conspiracy protagonists amongst us. Whilst very few in number, they vent their defamatory bile on an anonymously authored website or through selected social media sites.
The problem with this stuff is that it is becoming relentless. The risk is that, while it is authored by only a very small cabal of the disgruntled, the goal is to drain the energy out of those in voluntary elected leadership positions, diverting attention away from the strategic issues at hand. Their activity also demoralises our diligent office staff.
The Election:

The results of the election of a new president and for the three other vacancies on management committee were not known at the time of writing. I wish the successful candidates all the very best into the future.

Breed Spotlight - Schipperke

Brief History
The loyal and intelligent Schipperke originated in Belgium. Being alert, curious, intelligent and vigilant, the dogs were best known for guarding the boats that plied the canals between Brussels and Antwerp.

General Breed Description
Schipperkes are small, cobby Spitz type dogs with a sharp, foxy expression. Their eyes should be dark brown. Coats are usually black but occasionally other whole colours. The coats should be harsh and have a frill and a mane, and good culottes on the back of the thighs. A Schipperke can be walked several kilometres a day but will be equally content spending a day in the backyard. Schipperkes are very intelligent dogs and this needs to be considered when planning their training and housing. Schipperkes don’t have a “doggy odour”. This is a tailed breed but can have a natural bob tail.
Temperament
A Schipperke should be active, intensively lively and alert, and its temperament should be amenable, intelligent and faithful. Schipperkes are strongly loyal to their family but often distrustful of strangers. Schipperkes are extremely curious dogs, inspecting every inch of the house and objecting to anything out of order, like moved furniture. When you have their attention, their ears will be at the alert and they will twist their heads from side to side with a quizzical look. They are instinctively efficient killers of rats and other vermin.
Coat and Care Requirements
The coat is abundant, dense and harsh; smooth on head, ears and legs; lying close on back and side; erect and thick round neck, forming a mane and frill; with good culottes on the back of thighs. This breed requires regular brushing and bathing, and more diligent attention during periods of shedding. Nails should be trimmed as required.

Suitability
Anyone who is captured by the nature and appearance of the Schipperke, and who can meet his needs as described above, would make a good owner. Families, elderly people and those with small yards may be especially attracted to the Schipperke. This observation is not intended to rule out people who don’t fit into these groups.
Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders in is recommended you enquire about breed health and what health testing the breeder does. The Schipperke is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally.
Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span is 12 to 14 years.

Quick Facts
• Another theory on their name refers to the 1690’s when the Schipperke became popular on the barges and earned its name, meaning little captain in Flemish
• Schipperkes were great rodent exterminators on the canal boats
• One of the earliest breed specialty shows was for Schipperkes, conducted in the Grand Palace of Brussels in the late 1600s

In Conclusion
Now you know a little more about this breed. If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the breed club or Dogs Victoria. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come.
Whilst many breeds are recommended for families, it is imperative that when children are with dogs they are supervised at all times. Basic obedience training is a vital part of dog ownership.
Dogs Victoria is about the responsible ownership of all dogs and in particular, the preservation of pure breeds.

KCC PARK FACILITIES COMMITTEE
Easter at the Park – What a star our wonderful grounds were over Easter, with sunny days and late rain on Monday afternoon. There were two obedience and two rally trials conducted on area one over two days, six all breeds championship shows run by Easter Festival Roving Show Committee. These were held indoors with a total entry exceeding 3500 dogs! It is pleasing to see we are now providing viable conformation show options for members in Victoria over the Easter break.
Well done to all committees running these events and a big thankyou to Arthur and Bev Wilson and their small committee for running the six shows with a full interstate panel. It was pleasing to see a different best in show winner at each show and a pleasant time was had by the majority of exhibitors.
Unfortunately, another motor home was damaged by driving too close to the external awning over the group seven doorway and tore a hole in its roof. We are now going to install bollards outside the doorways of the southern end of the pavilion to prevent this from happening in the future.

Blue recycle bins – These have been placed around the grounds to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and the cost of disposing of our rubbish. Members, however, need to make sure they only place the correct items in these bins. There is a printed list on each bin.
Working bees – Don’t forget the working bee on the third Wednesday of the month 9am to 11am with free morning tea. Everyone is welcome. We would love to see more members at these events. The May focus is to have another tidy-up on the grounds as, sadly, some members do not pick up their rubbish.

Area one curbing – This is progressing slowly. We are still chasing up quotes for the curbing of this large area.
Lyndhurst rooms renovations – This is a major piece of work and a design for the upgrade of this kitchen is well underway, with a walk-in pantry and storage. Further quotes have been obtained from another supplier. The next step is to finalise the design. We, however, require further donations to fund the painting of the room, the new dividing wall, etc. If you can assist with donations of funds, no matter how small, please contact me.
All these projects are managed by our committee members at no cost to Dogs Victoria.
Future member projects/ bequests/ donations – We are always happy to discuss any proposals with you to improve member amenities on the grounds. We also need more funds, if you can assist, please speak to us.
We spend many hours on the site for the betterment of our dogs and our members. Our hard-working committee meets monthly. If you have any questions, queries or ideas, please contact the KCC Park Facilities Committee at perfu@bigpond.com

AGILITY NOTES
It’s been an exciting month for agility, with the trialling season really taking off for the year. With it came the first appointments for four of our newest judges.
Stephy Lawrence and Sharon De Castro started off with a bang at K9 Agility’s March trial. Sharing the stage with international judge Mirja Lapanja. Despite the heat of the day and the illustrious company, these two rose to the challenge beautifully, putting down some fun and challenging courses.
Then, just one week later, Darren Wallace and Lauren Fairless stepped up for the Border Collie Club’s trial. Melbourne’s weather was kinder to them. However, they had their own challenges, adjusting their carefully designed courses on the go to make allowances for the post holes on area one. Despite the last-minute stresses, their courses ran so well, testing our skills while letting the dogs open up and run.
It’s wonderful to see the courses they’re putting out and watching them develop their own distinctive styles. Every judge brings their own spin to their courses, something a little different. We’re so lucky to have such a breadth of styles across all our wonderful Victorian judges.

So, there is something out there to suit or challenge every team competing. Every team has its own individual skills and preferences. Plus, with more judges available, it gives them all more of a chance to train and run their own dogs rather than giving up every weekend to those of us competing.
I want to offer a huge thank you to all our judges. It does not go unnoticed how much work and effort you put into this sport. Not just the long days and hard work on the day, but all the planning and designing that goes into preparing the courses. Thank you for giving so much of yourselves so we can get out there and have so much fun with our dogs!
An example agility course is shown below.

OTEC NOTES
It is great to be back to trials again. The first weekend of March was interesting, with an extreme heat warning due to the fire danger. The Warrnambool trials went ahead without incident due to a modified early start time. The GSDCV trials were adjusted as well which enabled them to go ahead at a modified time. Everyone was contactable and got the message so the trials were completed and finalised before the heat of the day set in. Winner of winners went to Andrew MacDonald with Hillmagic Laranga Bono(Ai) CDX TD.
The GSDCV conformation show was not so fortunate. Due to different regulations the show had to be cancelled for the Saturday and Sunday. It was then decided it would be conducted on the Friday night, as the overseas judge was already in the country. Believe it or not it was cold enough to layer up. It is amazing how accommodating members can be when situations mean things have to change at short notice.
Southern’s obedience trial highest scoring dog at the first trial was Gordon Parsons with Eliteview Back To Black CD. At the second trial the highest scoring dog in trial was Sylvia Van Doorn with Cotonrun Meant To Be CD, SWN It was warm but comfortable and the trial was very well organised.
It was a privilege to have two Victorian judges officiating at the Sydney Royal.
Lisa Sinclair judged UDX, UD and novice. Novice winner was Pauline Hartwell with Ch Hartwyn Royal Winter Wine CCD RN. A lovely young dog, that I saw work beautifully at Bermagui, this year. He also won his breed class and tricks. (photo one)
Kim Houlden judged excellent and master. Our own Alan P Pupdog was in both of Kim’s classes. Alan was second place in master. He did allow Anthony to share the podium shot. (photo two)
Dawn Howard | OTEC Member
A letter to OTEC from a concerned member:
Recently, it has been raised by members that, where possible, clubs should try to give new judges or those having their first appointment at a new level experienced stewards. While judges are trained, they cope with new stewards, but it is far better for their confidence and nerves not to have to. It also does nothing to bolster the confidence of the newbies doing the stewarding which can at times be pressurising. Especially in the higher levels of obedience where a steward can inadvertently do something in many of the exercises that makes it more difficult for the dog or handler.
While some clubs will have difficulties finding helpers, there are enough experienced people who will happily steward if asked. Many of these people would also happily support a new judge while training a newbie,

so that next time, the clubs have an inexperienced but trained steward. In many cases, all clubs need to do is put word out that they are in need. There are many, including trainee judges, who would be happy to help.
We want to foster confidence in our new people, be they judges or stewards, and putting them together in a trial environment does not help this. It also puts people off from entering the judge’s training system as they will see this as an added pressure. Again, with the numbers currently in the trainee program, this is not what we want.
Autumn 2024 Friends of Obedience (FOO’s)
Autumn 2024 Friends of Obedience (FOOs) was a great success. The weather was very kind. There was terrible weather forecasted for one night, but luckily, the storm ended up missing KCC Park. This provided everyone with excellent trialling weather. We would like to remind everyone that FOOs depends on volunteers. We couldn’t run without Ian Woollard and his offsiders Peter Howard and Dearne Jackson. Huge thanks to Lea Cogley, Dawn Ayton, Julie Urie, Eddie Howden, Gaye Todd, Lisa Sinclair, Sharon Semple, Amy Butler, assisted by stewards Kerry, Cheryl Smith, Christine Begbie, Geoff and Pam Brown, Marta McKenzie, Clare Hodges, Heather Johns and Veronica Clunes who is a trainee judge. Special thanks to Margaret Widelock and Renee Carlson for doing so much of the background work.
The facilities committee has been helpful in making sure that the grounds are in good condition as well. It is also especially encouraging to see so many of the regular FOOs people doing so well in trials lately.

11 ways to break a sweat with your dog
Staying active is important for both humans and dogs alike. It is recommended that an average healthy adult should get 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week. Dogs also need regular exercise, but how much depends on your dog’s breed and age. Growing puppies are not yet ready to take on as much activity as adult dogs. And active breeds, such as Border Collies or German Shepherd Dogs, thrive on daily physical activity.
If you’re looking for a new way to get moving with your canine pal, here are 11 ways to try to exercise with your dog.

1. Go for a walk: This one is simple and obvious, but walking your dog is an easy way to keep you and your pet active and social. If you walk your dog in a busy area, make sure that your dog is polite and his focus is on you, not on the other people or dogs. And if you have a puppy, teach them how to walk on a leash.

2. Go for a run: If your dog is well behaved while walking, try adding jogging or running with your dog into the mix. Ease into running by alternating between walking and running. Gradually build up the time you spend jogging (for example, alternate between jogging for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds during your 20 minute walk). Be aware of your dog at all times and stop if they look uncomfortable. If you and your dog love running together, challenge yourself to build up to a dog human 5K race. If you’re unsure if your dog is up to it, ask your veterinarian.

3. Play fetch: Instead of just standing while your dog retrieves the ball, try doing a set of lunges, squats, jumping jacks, or another exercise before your dog makes it back to you. Change up your exercise between throws and use a ball launcher to really give you and your dog a workout.

4. Try dog sports like agility: A fun canine sport, agility will get you and your dog really moving as you work as a team to complete a timed obstacle course.
5. Dog + yoga = Doga: “Doga” is similar to the regular mindbody workout of yoga, but it’s with your dog. Practicing yoga can help tone muscles and increase flexibility. While some yoga studios may offer dog friendly classes, there are a number of tutorials online if you want to give doga a try at home.

11 ways to break a sweat with your dog
6. Dance with your dog: Not only does dancing provide a good cardio workout, but dancing with your dog can be a fun way to bond and stay active together. If you’re really serious about it, there are many “canine freestyle” and other dog dance competitions around the world. You can also try it yourself at home or attend local events put on by a few organisations.
7. Take a hike: Consider going hiking with your dog. Find a nearby hiking trail to make your regular walks more challenging. Keep your eye out for wildlife and be aware of poisonous plants and insects that could carry disease. If you live in a city, try urban hiking between a few landmarks or your favorite dog friendly places.

8. Train your dog to do tricks: Teach your dog some tricks that will impress your friends and keep you both moving. Try teaching leg weaves or how to go under the bridge. If you and your dog master a few tricks, try putting them together to create a routine.
9. Ride a bike or go rollerblading: If you have a very active dog, riding a bike or rollerblading while your dog runs alongside could be a good way to burn off some energy. Before you start make sure your dog is not scared of your rollerblades or bike, and that you are able to pay attention to your dog while you ride.

10. Attend a dog-friendly fitness class: There are a number of dog friendly fitness instructors who offer yoga, Pilates, and aerobics classes, both in person and online.

11. Play soccer: Soccer requires a lot of physical endurance and coordination, but it can be a fun and easy game to play in your backyard with your dog. Some dogs will go after the soccer ball naturally, while others may need some training and guidance. While some dogs may want to chase after the ball, some want to play goalie.

Before you engage in exercise with your dog, make sure that both you and your dog are physically up to it; consult your veterinarian as to what types and how much exercise is right for your dog.
Remember to take regular breaks and stay hydrated. Be aware of the weather and avoid exercising in extreme heat. If your dog is showing signs of difficulty breathing or exhibits symptoms of other health issues, call your veterinarian.

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG CLUB OF VICTORIA & THE
ROYAL CHILDRENS HOSPITAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL
Wow. The German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria’s 41-year association with the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal has thus far raised a total of $762,764.80.
Way back in 1984 the GSDCV through its Western Branch first got involved when Bernie Lester suggested that they join the Good Friday Appeal and collect funds to help sick kids. This kick started a long and rewarding association with one of Victoria’s most endeared fundraising events.

That first year of collecting, they raised $286.00, and it poured rain all day! Over the years, the event has changed. Originally our collectors, family and friends walked 16kms to the Herald Office in Melbourne, collecting at corners along the way with their dogs. They would meet in a North Melbourne park for lunch and then, as a group, they would walk to the Herald Office in Melbourne to count the funds collected. In 1997 the walk stopped and corner collection took precedence, and the destination moved to Southbank. Now the end point is Marvel Stadium. Until recently, we’d put on a small demo with our dogs, drawing a big crowd, and the public got to meet and pat our GSDs while the collected funds were counted.
The GSDCV has recently collected on corners in Kensington, Footscray, Sunshine and St Albans and the Keilor Football Club grounds.
In 2024, the GSDCV collected $28,886.30 and added together with our new virtual collection of another $1200, bringing our 2024 contribution to $30,086.30. Amazing effort.
Over the years, hundreds of members from many of our training branches and their family and friends have participated in collecting and contributing to a great cause each year. There are too many to mention but a massive and heartfelt thank you one and all.
The main club drivers and longtime organisers of our involvement are Bernie Lester, Lyn Pickering and Dom Cafari from Western Branch, who manage the RCH Appeal liaising, paperwork and coordination for our club. We are indebted to them for their vision, drive and determination to help this great cause. ‘We tip our hats to your efforts’.
The German Shepherd Dog Club looks forward to continuing our association with the RCH Appeal for many years to come.
Remember,
‘IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS’

VALE
Hazel O’Hehir 1931 – 2024
Hazel passed away after a short illness, aged 93. Hazel, with her late husband, all breeds judge, Bill, will be remembered by many long term members for their involvement in both British Bulldogs and Basset Hounds, under the Lyndhaze prefix.
Hazel, an only child, grew up in the Northcote/Thornbury area. Educated at Methodist Ladies College, she developed a deep love of reading and was an avid book collector. Prior to her marriage to Bill in 1951, Hazel enjoyed her occupation as a primary school teacher. Upon her marriage, she and Bill established their home in Croydon, where Hazel lived until shortly prior to her death.
The Lyndhaze prefix was established in 1953, when Hazel and Bill acquired their first British Bulldog, and through to the 1990’s, they successfully bred and exhibited British Bulldogs, a breed for which they held a lifelong passion and dedication. In 1958, Hazel and Bill introduced a Basset Hound into their kennel, Carillon Empress and with a small band of enthusiasts, successfully helped re-establish Basset Hounds in Victoria. Carillon Empress was the dam of several champions, including triple Royal Melbourne Show CC winning bitch, Ch Lyndhaze Umbrage. A top winning sire was Ch Lyndhaze Legionnaire and another was Ch Sepaki Master Jodie, who also enjoyed success outside the ring as the inaugural “Hush Puppy” model in Australia. Many top-winning British Bulldogs and Basset Hounds carried the Lyndhaze prefix, winning major awards at breed specialty and breed shows.
Hazel and Bill were founding members of the Basset Hound Club of Victoria, and over many decades were actively involved in both the British Bulldog and the Basset Hound Clubs, holding many positions for both clubs. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Hazel also served on the committees of the Non Sporting Dog Club and the Hound Club of Victoria.
Hazel was a respected life member of the British Bulldog Club, the Basset Hound Club, and also Dogs Victoria in recognition of her services to the canine fraternity in this state.
After Bill’s death in 2006, Hazel ceased breeding and exhibiting, but continued to share her home with three British Bulldogs and two cats. She became an active member of Probus, including editing the newsletter for her local club. Many owe their success in both British Bulldogs and Basset Hounds to Hazel who generously mentored and instilled into others her passion and dedication for these breeds.

RAFT NOTES
Field Trialling in Australia
The earliest reference to an organised gundog field trial in Australia was an advertisement in the Argus newspaper Monday 9 June 1902. The event was held at the Exhibition building on the 13/14 June and was hosted by the Victorian Poultry and Kennel Club. It was more of an exhibition than a trial, with the game being released and blanks firing while the dogs strutted their stuff.
The event excited the sportsmen of the time, who then wanted the dogs to be worked on real, wild game and with the use of live ammunition. The following year the Victorian Kennel Club ran the first open field trials for sporting gundogs held at St Huberts estate Yering. There were 33 competitors, which were divided into two sections, one for pointers and the other for setters.
The Victorian Gundog Club was formed around 1934 and with the Sporting Dog Club they both ran trials throughout the mid to late 1930s. The Cocker Spaniel Club, formed in 1931, was also running field trials for spaniels and added retrievers later in the decade.
In 1936 the first field trial championship was offered. The first pointer and setter champion was an English Setter named FTC Lady Tessie Of Laverick. The first spaniel champion was a Cocker named FTC Vanguard Of Glenraden.
The first official retrieving trials were held in 1957, following the granting of championship status by the then Kennel Control Council. Preceding this, only water tests were conducted.
Over the following years several specialist and semispecialist clubs came into being. The Victorian Gundog Club, the Labrador Club of Vic and the Cocker Spaniel Club of Vic were the only ones affiliated with the K.C.C. In 1959, the English Setter Club of Vic was formed, followed by the Irish Setter Club of Vic, and in 1960, the German
Shorthaired Pointer Club of Vic. 1966 saw the formation of the Golden Retriever Club of Vic and all could run field trials.
The first trial the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Vic ran was a novice held on the 28 May 1966 with 24 entries.16 German Shorthaired Pointer, English Pointers, English and Irish Setters making up the rest of the field. At the beginning of field trialling all of the pointing breeds ran together, then separate utility gundog rules were formulated.
Certain breeds became popular for field work, then reduced in favour over time. A good example of this comes from spaniel and retriever field trials. In the very early years Cocker Spaniels were the most numerous breed, followed by Labradors dominating through to the 1970s. The 1980s saw the rise of the English Springer Spaniel.
We now have three separate field trial disciplines. Utility gundog, pointer and setters, and spaniels and retrievers.
With the trialling season commencing in April (legislation permitting) it would be great to see some new faces, both competitors and spectators who may like to see more of what their breed was developed to do. For information on field trials please contact your breed club or any field representative of RAFT. The link to the website for contact details is herehttps://dogsvictoria.org.au/clubs/find-a-club/

What are nail infections in dogs?
Nail infections, known as paronychia, are fairly common in dogs. They are normally caused by trauma or injury to the skin around the nail, allowing bacteria or fungi to invade the exposed tissue and cause an infection. In the case of fungal nail infections, several nails are usually affected.
There is normally a yellow to brown discolouration of the affected nails and surrounding skin and in some cases, a thick discharge may develop at the base of the nails. There is usually a strong odour coming from the affected nail, and the nail is flaky, thickened and quite brittle. Malassezia is the most common fungi that affects the nails. With bacterial infections the infection is normally localised to one nail. The actual nail usually appears normal and the surrounding skin is red, swollen and warm, and often pus and blood oozes from the nail bed.

What signs are seen with nail infections?
The most common signs seen with infected nails are:
• Discoloured nails
• Thick, flaky, peeling nails
• Red swollen nail bases
• Painful nail bases
• Yellow or white discharge from the nail base
• Limping
What causes nail infections?
As mentioned, the main cause of nail bed infections is trauma or injury to the nail or surrounding skin. This can occur with running and jumping, where the nails can dig into the ground at force and hence get exposed to dirt and infectious agents. Another common cause is chronic paw licking, which may be secondary to an underlying environmental or food allergy. Bacteria and fungi thrive in moist environments, which can be associated with this paw licking.
How are nail infections diagnosed?
The clinical signs mentioned previously are often suggestive of nail bed infections. Once suspected the following tests may be used to confirm our suspicion and to determine the infective agent:
1) Cytology - discharge is collected and examined microscopically to identify bacteria, fungi and inflammatory cells.
2) Cultures – here, a sample is collected and tested in a lab to determine the type of bacteria or fungi causing the infection and the best medications to use.
3) Woods lamp - used to fluoresce the infected area if ringworm is suspected as the cause.
4) Biopsy - may be used if the infection is severe. Here a small sample is taken from the nail bed and submitted to the laboratory. This is particularly useful if the dog is not responding to treatment.
5) Xrays - may be used to assess whether the infection invades the bone or is limited to the skin and soft tissue around the nail base.
How are the nail infections treated?
Where the infection is bacterial, oral or topical antibiotics are used, and in some cases, bandaging is required. In the case of fungal infections, oral and/or topical anti-fungal drugs are used. Pain medication is normally applicable in all cases as is disinfection of the affected site.

LIBRARY NOTES
The library is happy to welcome back Anne Lenne and Jan Irving to our committee with another new helper, testing her flight feathers too. We are still very much in need of people willing to help out over weekends. All training and support will be provided so if you’re interested please let me know, pop in when we are open otherwise email is always welcome.
We have been very fortunate to have a pile of performance, novels and training books donated by Geelong ODC recently and another collection of performance books from Helen Evans who is one of our rally judges. So performance people come in and have a browse there’s lots of good stuff in the library. We also attempt to cater for ALL members so whatever your poison (so to speak!) we should have it. We have a ton of lovely children’s books as well that would love a good workout. Suggestions for new titles are also more than welcome!

BOOK REVIEW

REVIEW OF ‘THE SCHIPPERKE HANDBOOK’
The handbook is what it says on the cover: a concise but useful volume on the breed. The handbook covers the breed in its native land as well as the UK and the USA. The book is written by an American, so it is from that perspective, but attempts have been made to make it a universal handbook. It covers origins of the breed, breed characteristics, care, selection, inherited problems, shows, sports and breeding with a very useful list of extra resources in the back.

2.3 the show may be rescheduled to commence at 7.00am where in the reasonable consideration of the show committee, the judging will be completed before the temperature reaches 36 degrees Celsius;
2.4 the show may be moved to an indoor venue if the venue has cooling/airflow equipment and in the reasonable expectation of the show committee the temperature inside the venue will remain below 36 degrees Celsius during the running of the show;
2.5 application may be made by the show secretary directly to the Management Committee to have the show moved to the following day if:
