PRESIDENT (ACTING) Report

Welcome to the second digital edition of Dogs Victoria Magazine.

As always, there are a small number of printed editions for those who requested them.

May brings us to the second month during COVID-19 restrictions which is frustrating for the Dog Community as a whole.

However, at Dogs Victoria we are using this opportunity to complete the modernisation of the look and feel of our brand and website and to digitise the application process.

This month the Annual Report is published in-part following the accumulation of all reporting. The full report will have been printed and distributed by the time this is circulated.

I am busy actioning the Strategic Plan including new products, a new website, new branding and a more systemised approach to how Dogs Victoria is run, making sure that we can get involved doing what we do best, showing and breeding the best examples of the breeds we represent.

The future of Dogs Victoria is truly exciting. When we are back holding events – of all kinds – you will come to see how this transformation will come to serve all members.

To the members of Dogs Victoria, Thank you for the opportunity to reach out to you during this time.

The Annual Report is a reflection of the past, but what a hopeful future we are all walking towards.

It has been an honour acting as your President thus far, and to be a trusted contact during this time.

The COVID-19 Pandemic certainly took us all by surprise, many realising the true value of those we love, furry and otherwise.

During these uncertain times we can be encouraged by the solidarity that comes from the things we love to do, and the organisations that we are involved with.

I do know, for me personally, Dogs Victoria has been a wonderfully grounding certainty during this rough passage.

But, as always, the storm passes, and I am sure before long we will all be back to normal, reflecting on the oddness of it all –with its large measures of both fear and hope, creating a time for true pause within us all.

Exciting developments come in the acceptance of a new discipline, the sport of Scent Work, recently accepted by the ANKC, and we look forward to voting for and meeting this new sub-committee and seeing them in action in a few months’ time.

Perhaps now is the perfect time to get involved?

I hope this message finds you well and I look forward to seeing you all ringside!

Dogs Victoria’s evolution will always coexist with the wonderful traditions that we value so much, and I look forward to seeing a reinvigorated Dogs Victoria and saying hello to you all ringside, in no time at all.

As part of the strategic development of Dogs Victoria in 2020, and following an in-depth consultative process with senior members of Dogs Victoria across a variety of demographics, the decision was made. We were going to enhance the organisation’s branding and logo to better speak with new audiences and to get Dogs Victoria ready for an expanded market, to ensure Dogs Victoria is more inclusive for all members, whether family members, competitive members or anyone else in-between.

Welcome to your new look Dogs Victoria.

The focus for Dogs Victoria in the future is expanding our membership and encouraging dog owners, breeders and the dog community to identify with Dogs Victoria, and to automatically think of us when they think about responsible dog ownership in Victoria and dogs in general, for that matter!

We are focussed on securing long term members who will help grow Dogs Victoria now and into the future.

As an organisation with over 280 affiliated clubs, 10,000 plus members and a broad range of stakeholder groups, the new branding has evolved to be more inclusive and multi-dimensional.

The tag line ‘Your Canine Community’ was selected as it is inclusive, whilst strengthening Dogs Victoria’s position of being embedded and part of the community; as the authority and respected body for Dogs in Victoria.

The new tag line is all encompassing and works to join the dog community across Victoria. So let’s get started!

Spaniel Field Trials in the UK By Rod Watt Some months ago, I was asked ‘What is the difference between Spaniel and Retriever Field Trials in Australia and Spaniel Field Trials in the UK?’. In 2006 when I visited the UK, I caught up with some of their top trainers and attended a couple of their field trials for Spaniels. In Australia, I have run Spaniels in Field Trials and judged events for forty years, so I suppose I can safely offer an opinion on the difference between the two countries.

In Australia, we run both Spaniels and Retrievers in the same trials under the same rules, however, in the UK, Retrievers run separately their own trials. In these events, the Retrievers are walked in a line beside their handlers, not hunting, while live game is shot out in front of the line, then one of two judges will ask one of the dogs to retrieve the shot game. In the UK, Spaniel Trials are for Spaniels only. They hunt game out of heavy cover, flush it, sit while the game is shot and then on command from their handler, retrieve the game tenderly to hand.

In terms of judging, a clear difference exists between Australia and the UK. In the UK, there are two judges – each one judging half the field at the same time. The judges change over, so that both can judge the whole field. In Australia, we have one judge and a steward with two dog working together at the same time.

When it comes to handling, there is a variance between Australia and the UK. In the UK, the handlers don’t shoot over their dogs - they have shooters walking on the outside of the judges who shoot the game that is produced. In Australia, the handlers of the competing dogs shoot the game that their dogs produce. I believe a big difference lies in the fact that it’s harder to handle and shoot over a dog than just handle without having to concentrate on the shot. In the UK, field trials are run more on birds where in Australia, Spaniel and Retriever Field Trials are run predominantly on rabbits.

Finally, there is a different approach to scoring between Australia and the UK. In Australia, we score each dog in each run on a points system, in the UK, it’s an A, B, C, D system, meaning if your dog has run well, it could score an A, or poorly, then it could very well be a D. As you can see, both countries have quite a different way of producing a result for the best hunting dog on the day. In my opinion, whatever way you run trials or judge them, you would probably come up with the same dog as the winner. A Gundog which shows natural ability, good pace and drive, hunts well and produces game for the gun, can retrieve and is under control should do well under any system.

Royal Canin Knowledge Hub ​ POTTING SIGNS OF S DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS in your dog If you’ve recently noticed some changes to your dog’s behaviour when it comes to eating or bowel movements, they may be a sign of digestive problems.

If you’ve noticed changes in your dog’s digestion, bowel movements or eating, it’s important to take them to your vet so they can conduct a full examination. However, there are also many signs you can look out for which may indicate specific digestive problems.

Understanding your dog’s digestion and what’s ‘normal’ for them when it comes to bowel movements and other bodily functions is useful, as you’ll be able to quickly spot if something isn’t right.

Diarrhoea and digestive problems in dogs Diarrhoea is a common symptom of digestive issues, particularly with the large and/or small intestine. If your dog has diarrhoea, they will feel the need to move their bowels more frequently and do so very regularly.

Their stool is likely to be more liquid-like than solid, and may contain mucous. Large intestine conditions result in your dog having small volumes of diarrhoea but passing these very frequently.

Constipation in dogs Constipation is another commonly occurring symptom of digestive problems, and can have a number of potential underlying causes. If your dog is constipated, their faeces will be hard or dry, and they will move their bowels infrequently. They may also show signs of increased straining when attempting to move their bowels.

Vomiting and regurgitation in your dog Some digestive problems can result in your dog regurgitating or vomiting, which are two different bodily functions with different causes.

Regurgitation is a passive activity which can happen soon after swallowing, and results in your dog bringing up undigested, solid food. They may also show pain when swallowing. Vomiting is a reflex action which is accompanied by nausea, retching or hypersalivation; food and liquids are brought up and food may be partially digested in stomach acid. These symptoms are most often associated with digestive problems such as issues with the transport of food to the stomach via the esophagus, and with the stomach or broader gastrointestinal system itself.

Your dog’s behaviour and appearance As well as diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and regurgitation, your dog may exhibit changes in their behaviour and appearance which can signal digestive problems. For example, chronic digestive issues can cause an inability to absorb all the nutrients the body needs, leading to weight loss and a dry, dull, brittle coat.

Appetite changes, along with flatulence and abdominal discomfort, may be a sign of problems in the small intestine, and if your dog exhibits many of these symptoms frequently, this could indicate they are suffering with chronic gastrointestinal problems.

Getting to know your dog’s eating habits and other bodily processes is the first step in recognising when they may have a digestive issue. If their behaviour has changed significantly, including showing signs of vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea, it’s crucial to visit your local vet so they can advise you on the best course of action.

Eddy Van Eck Many older VCA members will remember the colourful character, Eddy Van Eck. Despite rumours to the contrary, it was Eddy’s vision that land suitable for a permanent dog showing facility would be purchased.

In 1982, when Eddy was a Councillor of the City of Cranbourne, he facilitated his dream. Acting on behalf of the Kennel Control Council (KCC), he found, acquired and supervised the conveyancing required for the acquisition of KCC Park.

Today, Dogs Victoria still holds the freehold of these 72 acres of land just 52 km from Melbourne, dedicated to conducting dog activities.

At some point in time, this should have been publicly acknowledged or given some recognition, either monetary or otherwise. But the Committee of the Kennel Control Council (KCC) was effectively a dictatorship.

Appointed by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, there were no elections or democratic processes. Worse, it had become compulsory for any person to become a member before they could participate in any dog activity.

To exacerbate matters, when a dispute arose, there was no natural justice. That person was automatically banned. So, when Eddy had a disagreement with the KCC Committee, they banned him! Then poor Eddy was not allowed to breed or show his dogs, let alone contribute to the KCC Park development.

Eddy migrated to Australia from the Netherlands in the 1950s. His first marriage produced two children, Lorraine and Derek. After the breakdown of this marriage, Eddy married Ranee, and together they acquired their first Pyrenean Mountain Dog.

In 1971 Eddy became a founding member of The Pyrenean Mountain Dog Club of Victoria and served as its President for several terms, with his wife Ranee, as Secretary. For some 27 years they held many happy club functions (including wine bottling) at their home, Andorra Kennels, in Lyndhurst. Eddy was very successful with his Pyreneans and, in 1976 won Best Exhibit in Show at the 1976 Adelaide Royal Show with Eng Champion Briarghyll Kelso (pictured). With his disqualification behind him, in the year 2000, Eddy organized the hosting of the World Conference by Victoria’s Pyrenean Mountain Club.

Eddy lost his beloved wife, Ranee in 2003, Some years later, he returned to the Netherlands to live with his daughter Lorraine and her husband. But despite being made the Pyrenean Club Patron, he never got over being banned by the KCC. He died in January this year sadly, in his daughter’s words, ‘an angry man’.

Scent Work

Scent Work has recently been officially adopted as a discipline by the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC).

This exciting addition to the calendar is fantastic news for all of those who work with dogs in Victoria in this capacity.

Dogs Victoria caught up with Judy Pillinger who worked with a dedicated team to get this result and is currently the convener of The National Canine Scent Work Committee.

“We have been working for three years to get this off the ground and approved and it has just been by the ANKC,” Judy said.

Especially now, during self-isolation and for those who live rurally, this could be a fantastic discipline to begin to explore.

Ideal for dogs of all ages and abilities, the sport of scent work is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to their handler that the odour has been found.

Judy explains that detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions.

“Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs of all ages the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog.

“The commencement date for Scent Work in Victoria is anticipated to be June 2020.

“We are looking to get started in an official capacity as soon as is safe to do so.”

“Expressions of interest for the subcommittee will go out shortly too,” she added.

My role at Dogs Victoria is Executive support and also working in the Membership Services department assisting with processing of litter registrations, transfers etc. In this role I’ve managed to become more engaged with the members and hear about their treasured animals.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

My weekends are filled with watching my mighty Bombers play and also spending time with my partner on a renovation project. I spend time in the garden, and well not so much recently, but usually with my children and also my grand-puppy “Teddy” -- he loves coming to grandma’s. He gets so excited and comes racing in for cuddles.

Having always worked in a membership based organisation, I enjoy the interaction with members that make the organisation thrive. My saying is we are: for the members, by the members!

I come from a background of having worked in many membership organisations from AFL clubs, Melbourne Racing Club, Tennis Australia, mechanical and electrical engineering companies - all member based.

I have been in may roles from Membership Services, Operations Manager through to National Membership Manager.

Your favourite moment so far working for Dogs Victoria?

Having only been at Dogs Victoria for three weeks, I have certainly found that it is a very friendly place to

Tetanus What is tetanus?

How are affected cases treated?

What causes tetanus?

Penicillin is used to treat the Clostridium tetani bacteria that are still active in the wound, or alternatively Flogyl can be used. Where there is muscle spasming occurring Valium can be used as a muscle relaxant. If the affected dog is unable to eat, a fooding tube may need to be placed.

Tetanus is a rare but quite serious disease that is caused by a bacterial toxin which affects the nervous system. Once this occurs it causes painful contractions of the muscles, specially of the neck and jaw. This often gives the appearance of lock jaw because the affected dog is reluctant to open his mouth due to the pain in doing so. In some severe cases tetanus can actually interfere with a dog’s ability to breathe and hence can be life threatening.

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by spores of the bacteria Clostridium tetani. These spores are found in soil, dust and animal faeces. In cases where these spores contact and enter flesh wounds, they develop into the Clostridium tetani bacteria. These bacteria can spread the tetanospasmin toxin, and when produced it impairs the motor neurons that control muscles, leading to stiffening of the affected muscles.

What signs do affected dogs show?

Where there is a wound the wound should be thoroughly cleaned, tetanus antitoxin should be given.

It is effective against free and inbound toxins in the wound and blood, but once the toxin enters the nerve endings or nerves the antitoxin is no longer effective.

What is the prognosis?

This is usually good with adequate treatment. Because the tetanus toxin is active for 2-3 weeks it can take this long for the symptoms to regress.

Once the tetanus bacteria enter the wound signs develop anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

The most common signs displayed are: • Stiffness and spasming of the jaw muscles • Almost parallel ear posture • Stiff gait • Upright tail • Drawn back lips • Widespread eyes which sometimes develop elevated third eyelid The signs become more pronounced with excitement and in severe cases the muscles of the dog’s jaws may become paralysed causing breathing difficulty.

How can the disease be diagnosed?

The presenting signs provide obvious indication of the disease being present. Definitive proof can be difficult and time consuming.

ONE BREED, TWO VARIETIES!

Collie (Rough) and Collie (Smooth) The Collie, whether Rough or Smooth, is a beautiful, intelligent and versatile dog – suitable for the show ring, the dog sports ring, herding or just as a loved family pet.

Bred primarily as a working sheepdog in the Scottish Highlands, the Collie was popularized

by Queen Victoria. The Queen owned both varieties of Collies, and it is acknowledged that her favourite was a Smooth Collie named Sharp. He arrived at the Balmoral kennels in 1864.

Collies experienced another surge in popularity following the “Lassie” films, and TV series. You may not know that all of the “Lassies” in the films and TV shows were in fact males, not females.

For those who enjoy grooming, the Collie (Rough), with his abundant double coat is the dog of choice. For those who prefer a little less time spent on grooming, then the Collie (Smooth) ticks all the boxes.

Both varieties come in three colours; sable and white (the ever popular colour of the very famous “Lassie”), tricolour (by definition three colours – predominantly black, with white collar, legs and tail tip, and sable markings on the head), and the very glamorous blue merle and white (a clear silvery blue, with the usual white markings, and sable markings on the head).

The Collie standard may well be the only one standard which stipulates that the breed should instantly appeal as a dog of great beauty.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST SOUGHT Investigations Committee Opportunities currently exist to join the Investigations Committee on a volunteer basis.

This challenging and varied role offers an opportunity to become more involved with the organisation. The position may prove an excellent stepping stone for members interested in a future career in this field.

Investigation is a peer to peer process surrounding a diverse range of case types; misconduct, animal welfare, registrations, social media etc. Therefore, whilst the role of an investigator maybe rewarding it is not the role for everyone.

As an investigator you will normally receive a case load of 3 files which are worked on concurrently. Ideally candidates will volunteer an average of 2-3 hours a week.
