Welcome to the April 2024 edition of the Dogs Victoria Magazine.
As you may be aware, the Victorian Government’s Animal Care and Protection laws are currently under review. New legislation is being prepared that will replace the 38 year old Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986. There is a very strong likelihood that breeding regulations will be significantly strengthened and penalties imposed for noncompliance. The draft Bill, for example, makes it an offence to breed or sell an animal with a heritable defect. The specified heritable defects will be listed in the regulations supporting a new Act. Dogs Victoria strongly supports responsible animal management and has provided strong feedback throughout the consultation process.
Acting proactively, management committee has decided to implement compulsory DNA proof of parentage testing for all breeds from the 1 January 2025.
Management committee also recognises that it will become compulsory for all breeders to implement DNA testing for breed specific diseases and particularly for those diseases listed in the revised regulations. Breeders will need to be equipped with evidence that their breeding stock has been tested.
It is for this reason that every breed club in Victoria has been asked for their input on breed specific heritable diseases for their breed by the 30 April this year. Breeds without a club need to contact their group club or contact Dogs Victoria.
It is recognised that many breed clubs, such as the German Shepherd Dog Club, are already well ahead of the game here. In a significant move the management committee has endorsed the introduction of mandatory respiratory function grading testing. This initiative, proposed by the British Bulldog Club of Vic Inc, French Bulldog Club of Vic Inc, and the Pug Club of Vic, will commence in January 2025. The collaboration between the Dogs Victoria Education Committee, Canine Health and Wellbeing Committee, and relevant breed clubs underscores a commitment to responsible breeding practices.
Crufts 2024
Crufts 2024, the world’s largest and most celebrated dog show, saw two dogs intimately related to Australia’s canine heritage (a fabulous Australian Shepherd and an equally fabulous Jack Russell Terrier) awarded best in show and runner-up in show. According to our own Jane Harvey in her new book, Australian Dogs Unveiled, the Australian
Shepherd originated in Australia but was largely developed as a breed in the USA, while the Jack Russell originated in the UK but was largely developed as a breed in Australia. Of the Crufts results a big congratulations must go to Gwen Huikeshoven and Shellie Marshall who bred the hound group winner, known as Get Me. What’s more his sire, Frosty, accomplished the same feat seven years previously, great breeding!
This is the third in a trilogy of excellent canine books authored by Jane Harvey. Love her or hate her, no one could doubt the meticulous scholarly research, honest passion and pure hard work she brings to her writing. This book is a captivating exploration into the diverse world of the dog breeds that developed here in Australia, offering readers an insightful journey through their history, characteristics, and unique traits. From the iconic Australian Cattle Dog and Kelpie to lesser-known breeds like the Tenterfield Terrier, Jane expertly navigates through each breed’s origins, temperament, and suitability for different lifestyles, making this book an invaluable resource for seasoned dog enthusiasts, trainee judges and newcomers to the world of canine companionship. Jane also brings to life the roles these Australian breeds have played in the nation’s history and culture. Her passion for these remarkable canines is evident on every page, making this book a must-read for all members, highly recommended.
Dogs Australia has approved the establishment of a new national canine grooming committee to operate under the rules of the FCI.
Credit for this initiative, and a big congratulations, goes to May Wong who undertook the research and provided the supporting documentation. Dogs Australia approved her appointment as the convenor of the committee.

The Siberian Husky’s compact body, well-furred coat, erect ears, and brush tail immediately suggest the breed’s northern heritage. The breed’s ancestors were originally bred in north-eastern Asia by the Chukchi people and were kept as companion dogs for their families, as well as endurance sled dogs. Siberians caught the eye of the public when they began winning sled races in the early 1900s, but they made headlines in 1925 when a legendary musher, Leonhard Seppala, led a relay of Siberian Huskies over 658 miles in only five and a half days to rush a lifesaving serum to Nome, Alaska, where an epidemic of diphtheria had broken out.
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working dog, quick and light on his feet and free and graceful in action. His moderately compact and well-furred body, erect ears and brush tail suggest his Northern heritage. His natural hunting instinct is always there and given the opportunity he will be off and may not heed your efforts to call him back. They do not tend to bark as a rule, but they do howl. Siberian Huskies come in all colours from black to pure white.
They are intelligent but somewhat independent and stubborn. They thrive on human company, but need firm, gentle training right from puppy hood. These are dogs bred to run.
The coat of the Siberian Husky is double and medium in length, giving a well-furred appearance. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length to support the outer coat. The guard hairs of the outer coat are straight and somewhat smooth lying. It should be noted that the absence of the undercoat during the shedding season is normal. The occasional bath will keep them clean. Siberian Huskies do shed coat, usually twice a year and it can take up to a month for the coat to shed. Regular grooming through this stage is essential. Nails should be trimmed as necessary.
Huskies are an ideal pet for an active family. They need plenty of exercise and they are also escape artists, so it is recommended that they be kept in a secure yard with high fences. They do enjoy the company of other dogs, once acquainted. If left home alone for long periods they will become bored and start to destroy things because, like a lot of other working dogs, they like to keep busy.
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Siberian Husky is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include Hip Dysplasia (HD) and inherited eye conditions.
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span is 12 to 15 years.

• Siberian Huskies can have a “snow nose” which is a lighter colour and often appear in colder months
• Despite their appearance, the Siberian Husky is not closely related to the wolf
• This breed can work in extremely cold conditions
• The historic Iditarod Race in Alaska, run by teams of Huskies over 1000 miles, demonstrates the incredible stamina and heroism of the breed
Now you know a little more about this breed. If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the breed club or Dogs Victoria. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come.
Whilst many breeds are recommended for families, it is imperative that when children are with dogs they are supervised at all times. Basic obedience training is a vital part of dog ownership.
Dogs Victoria is about the responsible ownership of all dogs and in particular, the preservation of pure breeds.

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter.
Night of Nights – The pavilion and grounds looked a treat for this wonderful event and was well supported by all.
Working Bees – We would love to see more members at these events, most of time we are just tidying up, picking up rubbish around the grounds, which does build up when left unchecked. Our working bees are held on the third Wednesday of each month 9 - 11 am with free morning tea. Please support these working bees. April focus is to pick up all the rubbish lying around the property.
Tree Removal – In March we commenced the removal and trimming of the trees on site. These trees were deemed at risk, and approved by the Frankston City Council to be removed. Some of these were around the office car park and library.
The mulch from these trees will be placed on the new garden beds we have established on our southern boundary near the dam. Tree planting will commence shortly, and we will need volunteers to assist with this work.
The Classic Room- Renovations are completed, and management committee and the finance committee held their first meetings in the revamped room in February. This is a wonderful asset, with 360-degree views of the grounds.
Area One Curbing – We are busy chasing up quotes for the curbing of this large area.
Lyndhurst Rooms Renovations – This is a major piece of work, and a design to upgrade this kitchen, with a walk-in pantry and storage, is well underway. We are now obtaining second quotes. We, however, require further donations to fund the painting of the room, the new dividing wall, and electrical and plumbing works. If you can assist with donations of funds, no matter how small, please contact me.
Office Works – A new floor has been installed in the portable building, and a new kitchen installed in the office, which a major cleanup of all the old plumbing from the old canteen. The old kitchen was 30+ years old and needed replacing.
Minor Repairs – More works have been undertaken in the Classic building toilets, with the replacement of one ladies toilet cistern, which was failing at our events. Several soap dispensers were replaced.
All these projects are managed by our committee members at no cost to Dogs Victoria.
Future Member Projects/Bequests/Donations – We are always happy to discuss any proposals with you to improve member amenities on the grounds. We also need more funds, if you can assist, please speak to us.
We spend many hours on the site for the betterment of our dogs and our members. Our hard-working committee meets monthly. If you have any questions, queries or ideas, please contact the KCC Park Facilities Committee at perfu@bigpond.com
Chris Moore | Chair KCC Park Facilities CommitteeDespite a break over summer with no trials in Victoria, a lot has been going on behind the scenes.
There were two meetings in regard to the endurance, tracking and track and search rules and both were very well attended. It was great to see some people that we hadn’t seen for a while.
For tracking there is the inclusion of two new tests, leading to a new title tracking grand champion. The two new tests involve a greater minimum number of turns, including more acute turns. There is also no commitment for clubs to offer all 10 tests at any one trial. This is important as clubs have been experiencing issues with the availability of land. Therefore, you need to check whether the test you require is offered at a particular trial.
Two clubs have agreed to offer the new tests. Ballarat ODC is offering test nine on the first weekend of May. Tracking Club of Victoria is offering test ten on the first weekend of June. Both of these trials will be at Haddon.
There are no huge changes for track and search but there are sections where the use of hi vis is explained in greater detail.
The lead must be a minimum of five and maximum of six metres for all tests. For tests six, eight and ten the lead must be reflective. These rules help set everything out in greater detail.
I know it is at the end of April, but you need to think about it now.
The timetable for the review of the Dogs Australia rule books for obedience and rally has now been set by OTEC. Please refer timetable below–
• Monday 29 April 2024: Closing date for submissions for changes to the Obedience and/or Rally Rule Books via post to Locked Bag K9 Cranbourne Vic 3977 for the attention of the Obedience, Tracking & Endurance Committee (OTEC) or via email directly to Lynn Klecka at morningmystgoldens@gmail.com
In wording submissions, remember to include the current rule followed by the proposed change and then the rationale for the change. If you have any issues, any member of the OTEC will be willing to assist.
After they are collated there will be a meeting in person at KCC Park, Lyndhurst Room - Monday 3 June 2024, followed by a Zoom meeting on Thursday 6 June 2024, to allow as many people as possible to participate.
There has been a lot of discussion among triallers and judges in regard to where change is needed.
Two main issues that keep coming up, are to devise a non-jumping pathway to UDX as well as the group stay
exercises. Do we delete them or change them, as has happened overseas?
A delegation of Victorian triallers made their way to Bermagui as usual this year. I just love driving into the town with the sign saying, “Welcome to the Doggies”.
The grounds were magnificent and the weather was kind. Some of us attended the show, some of us trialled with some success and some of us judged.
For the showies amongst us, there was an 8am start for sweepstakes. Followed by the breed show. Then the important stuff, starting at 6pm. They were long days but such fun.
The Victorian obedience and rally success stories included: Marta McKenzie had success in UDX with Obed Ch Khayoz Heavens Star RN who had a lovely pass, under Pauline Hartwell.
Cynthia Toohey also got a lovely UD pass with Huatoki Riverreeds River CDX.
Amanda Murcutt with Pawsitive The Mysterious One got a first place with 188 in novice.
Peter and Dawn Howard did well with Killara The Energizer Bunny TDX TSD in CCD.
Unfortunately the rally results aren’t on hand but there were some great Victorian results.
Apologies for anyone who was missed, it was a very busy weekend.

The Dogs Victoria Night of Nights for 2023 was a great success, we received a record entry of 95 in top puppy and 81 in top dog for a total entry of 176. We would like to thank our judges Sandra Reeve (NSW), Timothy Thomas (Qld) and Aramis Lim (SA) who officiated on the night along with our judges liaison Andrew Burt. The judges were very impressed with the standard of all dogs presented to them. This year the organising team wanted to raise the bar on their efforts of the previous year. Changes implemented included using a round ring in place of the usual square, potted plants (kindly provided by Raelene Trimble of Facey’s Nursery) were also used in place of the fencing that is normally used at conformation events held at KCC Park. The Dogs Victoria marketing items such as tear drop banners, media walls, gazebo, counters, table cloths and signage were also used. The Whippet Association of Victoria Inc, the Cocker Spaniel Club of Vic Inc and the KCC Park Show Committee had previously donated the funds for these items to been purchased.
Another first was the ability for members/spectators to purchase round tables, these were placed ringside and made for a truly engaging atmosphere. We also had two flower archways at the entrance of the ring and also two flower pillars on the photo podium, these were very kindly donated by Julie Cartledge.
Dogs Victoria thanks the many companies that supported this event by way of donations to the trophy table. They included the major sponsor Royal Canin who provided a goodie bag for each exhibitor and Betty Andre who donated a deluxe Oztrail gazebo for the top puppy and top dog winners. Dogs Victoria also thanks our other long-standing sponsor of the event Computer Sashes & Rosettes for their very generous donation. Other sponsors included Gogo Treats, SWIFF, the Clipper Shop, Canine Couture, Petworks and Awkaw Products.
The organising team also introduced a silent auction that was held on the night. Items up for auction included an Altegra gazebo and vouchers, Kong packs, Settlement Hotel stay package, Akaw dog crate, The Clipper Shop Grooming Bundle, Sass Artworks products as well as four high quality mixed packs full of treats and other goods.
Congratulations to everyone who qualified during the year and attended the night and competed proudly in the Top Dog and Top Puppy for 2023.
Dogs Victoria thanks members for supporting this event and we look forward to seeing everybody at the Dogs Victoria Night of Nights on Saturday 1 March 2025. Be sure to mark your calendars now.
Like so many things, the agility nationals were put on hold and mixed up by the Covid years, postponed again and again. It’s only this year that the regular, patterned scheduling has been able to continue. The NSW nationals were originally intended to be held in 2022, and are now going ahead in July 2024.
Traditionally the nationals are kicked off by the big interstate competition, the team events. To this end we needed to field a Victorian team to represent us.
Our tryout day was held on a surprisingly mild (thanks Melbourne) Sunday. Four different judges gave us their time and expertise to design and judge courses for the team tryouts. The best scores across the jumping and agility events would make up our Victorian team. There were so many amazing runs across all different heights, everyone should be proud of their efforts.
Big congratulations to those who made the team! We’re looking forward to seeing you showing them what Victoria can do. Have an amazing time out there!

Recently we have been fortunate enough to have our little band of library staff expand. We have one new external helper and another two internal staff. Happy to welcome Anne Lenne and Jan Irving back to the fold and welcome Kerrie Smith to our team. We do still need some help manning the library particularly over weekends so if you’d be interested in coming on board please feel free to contact me.
We now have our opening hours up on DVs Facebook page. So we look forward to seeing you in the library soon.
Clare Hodges | Chair Library CommitteeHan de Beer’s book is a delightful and beautifully illustrated tale of a brave polar bear cub and a little lost husky pup. Flo chases Lars and gets lost. Cue Lars to the rescue. As their adventure continues, their friendship grows. This lovely book is one that both adults and children will enjoy.
Clare Hodges | Chair Library CommitteeChairman of Retrieving and Field Trialling (RAFT), Mr Tony Palmer has visited East Gippsland to announce that Bairnsdale has been selected to host the 2024 National Retrieving Championships and the Victorian State Championships in September this year. These championships have been held on an annual basis for many years. Last year’s national event was held in Western Australia.
Retrieving trials seek to set up an event to replicate hunting. Animals are not harmed at the trial. “game” is thrown and placed by the judge, guns are fired using blank ammunition and dogs and their handlers are required to work together as a team to locate and retrieve the game.
Labrador Retrievers are by far the most popular dog breed due to their hunting instincts and trainability. However, all gundog breeds are eligible to compete, and it is common to see German Shorthaired Pointers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels in the field. Competing dogs are highly trained by their owners and love doing what comes naturally to them.
Mr Palmer expects entries to be received from every state with up to 150 people visiting the area for the event. The nationals are run in conjunction with the Victorian State Championships and the Labrador Club of Victoria lead up event making it a three week retrieving trial festival.
Mr Palmer went on to announce that the national judges will be Greg Playdon and Di McCann. Both judges have had extensive experience in judging previous state titles and many all-age events over many years. They have both been successful trainers and competitors. Greg has previously won a national championship with his black Labrador Adderslot Digger whilst Di has trained a GSP that qualified as a retrieving trial champion.
The Victorian State Championship will be judged by Jim Hargreaves and Mark Davis. Both Jim and Mark are very experienced championship judges and very successful trainers and handlers. Jim competes with Golden Retrievers and Mark with Labradors and both are looking forward to being able to judge the best dogs and handlers from around the country.
Mr Palmer and his organising team toured the farm sites that will host the event. He stated they were delighted and impressed with the properties that are available to be used. As the three trials will be held on a number of farms in the Bairnsdale area, he is confident that it will be a great event due to the variety of suitable terrain that is available. The judges require water, gullies and cover and Mr Palmer says that Bairnsdale “has it all”. He is delighted to see the cooperation of the local farming community to allow these events to be run on their properties.
More information regarding the national and state championships will be provided on the RAFT Facebook page on a regular basis leading up to the event. The state championships will be held on 14-15 September with the national being conducted on 20-22 September. Spectators are most welcome at any time, and we have put the call out for anyone able to assist in the running of both events to please contact Tony Palmer or Kate Eltringham, managers and RAFT retrieving representatives.
Trevor StowAnal Sac Inflammation, Impaction & Abscess
Anal sac inflammation develops because of apportinstic bacterial infection. This most likely occurs secondary to blockage of the duct leading from the gland. The most common bacteria associated with the infection are E coli, Staphylococcus faecalis, Clostridium and Proteins.
It has been suggested that longer or shorter ducts maybe involved in the cause of the duct obstruction. Also, dietary fibre content and faecal consistency my affect the normal emptying of the anal glands hence leading to anal sac impaction.
What signs do affected dogs show?
Dogs affected with inflamed anal sacs will often show signs of dragging their anus along the ground, excessive licking of the anal area discomfort when sitting straining to pass faeces and a bad anal odour. When looking at the anal sacs there maybe no visual signs of an issue or there may be signs of self-trauma.
In cases where there is pus or blood draining from a duct located at 4 or 8 o’clock below the anal sphincter it is suggestive of a burst anal sac abscess.
How are affected dogs diagnosed?
With unaffected anal glands the glands are easily expressed and release a pale to dark liquidly secretions.
Where an anal gland is impacted the gland is hard to express and release a pasty grey-brown secretion. The presence of pain and granular green-yellow or bloody secretion indicates the presence of anal sacculitis.
In the case of an anal sac abscess there is pain at 4 or 8 o’clock below the anal entrance and often a purulent and bloody draining tract is seen in this area.
How are affected dogs treated?
Where the anal sac is impacted relief by manual expression of the gland is usually successful in relieving the impaction. Where anal sacculitis is present the gland is manually expressed then catheterised and flushed out and topical antibiotics infused into the sac. They may also be placed onto a course of antibiotic tablets.
Where an anal gland abscess has bust the affected dog is normally placed on a course of antibiotic and antiinflammatory tablets and the area is cleaned with antiseptic solution. In cases where the abscess hasn’t burst the abscess is first lanced then treated as an open abscess.
Removal of anal sacs is rarely required but is considered unless the condition becomes chronic.
Dr Michael BellDogs can come into contact with internal parasites at any point in their lives, including before they are born. These parasites—which are often different types of worms—can cause problems once they find their way into your dog’s gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Depending on the parasite, your dog may experience symptoms, but this isn’t always the case. Deworming dogs is a key part of preventative measures as well as treating parasites if your dog has them.
Since dogs of any age are at risk, your veterinarian will recommend a deworming treatment plan, which will include routine testing and treatment. This medication will help eliminate any current parasites as well as prevent your dog from getting parasites in the future.
Puppies can be born with parasites like worms. Typically, a breeder will check the mother for worms, which could be dormant in her system. As hormones are released during pregnancy, Dr. Amy Attas, VMD says it’s possible for worms to be transferred to the puppies. “Parasites can transfer via blood in utero and also through nursing.”
Dogs are ideal carriers of parasites, as they are often in places where parasites thrive. Some dogs eat grass or other things, like poop, that can contain parasites. That increases the chances of pets picking up worms through their mouths. Dogs also tend to investigate with their noses where other animals have defecated, so if other animals have parasites, they can be transmitted that way as well.
If another animal’s poop contain parasites, the eggs of these worms can mature inside the affected dog. If both male and female worms are present in your dog’s GI tract, the female worms will lay eggs. As a result, if left untreated, the problem can spread.
Treatment to deworm a puppy usually starts when they are very young, even before they go home with a new owner. Ask your vet when to start giving your puppy a heartworm preventative.
There are a variety of different worm species that can affect dogs, and depending on the type, can cause different issues your dog. The worms that commonly affect dogs are roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms—which veterinarians collectively call “long worms”—as well as tapeworms and heartworm, the disease caused by heartworms.
If your dog passes roundworms, hookworms, or whipworms in their poop, it can look like a piece of white thread, a skinny spaghetti noodle. While it can be alarming to see long worms alive and moving, it’s not always the case that dogs will shed these worms in their stool.
If your dog is symptomatic, they may experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and weight loss. Hookworms and whipworms can suck blood, too, which may result in your dog becoming anemic.
A dog may swallow an external parasite like a flea, which can be carrying tapeworm eggs. When that happens, tapeworms can pass from the parasite to the dog. Tapeworms can be found in feces or around the dog’s rectum and can look like a little kernel of rice in a dog’s poop.
Heartworms are the most preventable parasite in dogs, and are transmitted by mosquitos. “Heartworms are completely different types of parasites because they reside in the heart and blood vessels, not in the gastrointestinal tract.
Signs that your dog may have heartworm include coughing, weakened pulse, and exercise intolerance. Unlike the diagnosis of other worms (which requires fecal analysis), the diagnosis of heartworms requires a blood test. Some dogs may even require an ultrasound or echocardiogram. Without proper treatment, heartworm can lead to heart failure, lung disease, and even death.
Make sure you schedule a visit and talk to your vet about the best product for heartworm prevention in dogs. Some breeds might be sensitive to certain heartworm medications, so that your vet can help you choose the safest options for your dog.
Aside from the type of worm present, another concern is the “worm burden,” or how many worms are actually inside a dog’s GI tract. Puppies that are not dewormed routinely can develop dull coats and experience stunted growth.
Since worms are competing with the host animal for nutrition, dogs with high numbers of worms, especially puppies, can suffer from malnutrition.
If your dog has soft poop, diarrhea, or the poop’s appearance changes, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with your vet. Bring in a fecal sample to check for evidence of parasites. It is also recommended to have your dog’s stool checked when you take them for their annual physical examination.
The vet will examine the fecal sample under a microscope. Once the sample is mixed with a solution, any parasite eggs will float to the top. The use of a special stain makes it easier to see the eggs through a microscopic examination.
The eggs of different parasites have different appearances so we can actually pinpoint what worms are present without seeing the worm. Sometimes the test can come back with a false negative. This can happen if the worms aren’t laying eggs at that time. The fecal specimen is negative but in fact, there still could be parasites present.
For puppies, deworming typically begins when your pet is two weeks old, and continues every two weeks until they’re weaned. The timing depends on which product the vet is using and what the label recommends. Some medications have a weight limit, so a puppy may receive their first dose at closer to three weeks old.
For adult dogs, deworming is recommended when worms are present or when there’s a high index of suspicion that worms are present.
If your dog has abnormal stool and testing comes back negative, your vet might administer a dose of deworming medicine to treat any worms that aren’t showing up on the fecal test.
There are many deworming treatments available that are safe and effective for dogs. Oral deworming medication can come in pill, powder, or liquid options. For puppies, your vet might recommend a liquid dewormer.
Pills can be cut in half or in quarters, but it’s harder to get the right dosage as your puppy gains weight. Some dogs may feel unwell or experience decreased appetite in response to an oral dewormer, but these possible medication side effects are very rare.
In addition, there are topical deworming treatments that get absorbed through the skin. Topical dewormers target the worm and likely won’t cause negative side effects for your dog. Some dogs, however, may experience a skin reaction that leads to itchiness and discomfort. If this happens, you can try washing the product off to provide some relief.
Worms are something we want to get rid of to make sure that puppies and dogs stay healthy. It’s an easy problem to fix with conscientious owners and good veterinary care. This article was first printed by the American Kennel Club and is reprinted here with permission.

As track and search tests are conducted in urban environments where there are likely to be hazards including moving vehicles and uneven surfaces all reasonable steps to protect safety must be taken.
A competitor who does not comply with safety requirements must be disqualified. Before commencing judging a test the judge must check that the dog and handler have on the necessary equipment. A judge may abort or suspend a track at any time if they consider it necessary to do so for safety.
(g) The Judge may disqualify any Handler who does not comply with safety requirements.
Amended to read:
(g) The Judge must disqualify any Handler who does not comply with safety requirements.
Please note the updated Rules & Guidelines for the conduct of Track & Search Dog Trials are now available from our website under Tracking at: https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/ruleregulations/rules/

These have been rectified and the updated rules as well as the Summary of Dances with Dogs changes to titles are now available from our website under Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog at: https:// dogsaustralia.org.au/members/rule-regulations/rules/
In the first twenty one years of elections, Dogs Australia has received nominations for 58 dogs and 45 people to be considered for induction into the Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame. From the nominations received 36 outstanding dogs and 28 exceptional people have been inducted.
The criteria for the two categories for selection are the following:
1. Outstanding Gundogs (must be permanently retired from further competition and have not competed for the past 12 months, or be deceased)
(a) Their record as a winning dog i.e., CLUB – STAKE – DATE – JUDGE PLACE and/or
(b) Their production record.
(c) The eligibility for a dog should be based on its entire competitive career and previous record as a producer, not merely for a particular win or for a heroic deed within the field and retrieving trial sphere.
(d) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs that have been awarded the title of Grand Champion and have gained a total number of points equal to, or greater than, twice the total number required for that award, shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career.
(e) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs winning at least two National Championships in the same discipline shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career.
2. Prominent Persons:
Their record of a broad combination of accomplishments as:
(a) Club official
(b) Judge
(c) Owner
(d) Handler
The distinction of nomination should be accorded to those who have made outstanding contributions to the field or retrieving game. Nominees should be givers to the sport and not takers.
Nominations are now being called for the current year. In addition to applications submitted in relation to Outstanding Gundogs 1 (d) and 1(e), a maximum of two other outstanding gundogs and two prominent persons may be elected each year.
Nomination:
1. Clubs or Members may nominate DOGS and PEOPLE considered worthy of awards, including full details of accomplishments within the above categories and with verification. In the case of dogs, nominations should include the full name, title, owner and date of birth.
[Please note it is a condition of nomination that the nominator/s provides accurate written material supporting the nomination. In the absence of such accurate supporting material, or should the supporting material later prove to be inaccurate in areas of significance, the Selection Panel for the Dogs Australia Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame reserves the right to reconsider its decision and if appropriate, delete the name of the Prominent Person or Outstanding Dog from the list of inductees.]
2. Nominations shall close on the 31 May 2024 at respective Member Body offices for forwarding to Dogs Australia.
3 Please use the proforma nomination forms that are available from all Member Body offices and the Dogs Australia website at https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/hall-of-fame/retrieving-field-trial-hall-of-fame-2024nominations/
