I hope that everyone is enjoying their Morgan horses whether it be out on the trail, in the show ring or having fun in the backyard.

Every year at this time, I look forward to August and the Mass Morgan Horse Show. I would invite you all to come to the show and help us celebrate the Morgan horse and our show theme ... "Favorite Sports Teams."

Gather all your enthusiasm, sports apparel, memorabilia, and decorations in time for the Mass Morgan Horse Show. Represent your barn in some "Team Sports" and even if you don't participate get ready to cheer your team on.

MMHA Banquet.... 2017 Submitted by: Chris Delude

The Mass Morgan Horse Association Annual Meeting and Year End Awards Banquet was held on March 4, 2017 at the Villa Rose Restaurant in Ludlow, MA. This was the first year that the banquet was held here with the restaurant providing a delicious buffet and a relaxed and cozy setting. The attendees were entertained by a Trivia game led by Cindy Mugnier. Team Brady led after the first three rounds but in the final quarter it was Team Moreland that came away with the win. A Chinese raffle with several baskets packed with a variety of assorted horse and horse lover items were raffled off. Melissa Morrell, MMHA Banquet Committee Chairperson, along with her other committee

members coordinated all of the arrangements from the elaborate buffet dinner to the awards presentations.

Championship and Reserve Championship awards were presented by division again this year. Award winners in the Carriage, Dressage, Trail, Equitation, Pleasure Driving,

English Pleasure, Hunter, Park Saddle and Park Harness, Western and Classic Pleasure Saddle and Driving divisions shared their excitement with each other as they were individually called to receive their awards.

In addition to the Championship and Reserve Championship awards that were presented, Mass Morgan also recognized and presented a Distinguished Service Award, and a Horse of the Year Award. It was with great appreciation and admiration that the following awards were given.

Distinguished Service Award.....

Pamela Powers The recipient of this year's Distinguished Service award has been an amazing asset to Mass Morgan for the past several years in various ways. Pam has selflessly stepped up to a job as a volunteer that no one ever really wants to do and does it in a timely fashion that is much appreciated. Tabulating points for horse shows is easily one of the most repetitive and thankless jobs out there. Pam has come up with a formula for calculations which makes errors much less possible and cuts down the time she has to spend agonising over lists.

Pam has also assisted with constructing centre ring for many years. She has volunteered her time at the New England Morgan Horse Show to man the Mass Morgan table under the tent and promote our club and show. One year she even dressed up as the Cat in the Hat to help deliver green eggs and ham to exhibitors to help people get excited for the Dr. Seuss theme. In addition, she has also been there to help clean up after the Thursday night party at the Mass Morgan horse show.

Mass Morgan would also like to thank Pam for her time and patience in running a kids activity table at the horse show. She was able to keep several children busy and engaged in constructive activities ranging from scavenger hunts to fun arts and crafts activities.

Pam balances a full time job with being a mom to her daughter, Addison who also has been bitten by the horse bug and enjoys riding lessons. In addition, Pam continues to show her horse PLR Enduring Spirit, affectionately known as "Brady" in the Amateur Hunter Pleasure Division.

2016 MMHA Horse of the Year...

SBS Risky Business Thirteen years ago, the recipient of this award was bought sight unseen by Jeff Morse of Green Meads Farm in hopes that he would make a decent carriage driving entry to compete in the New England circuit. Prior to this change in ownership he was campaigned primarily in the western pleasure division and also as a classic pleasure horse.

SBS Risky Business came with the nickname "Risky" which was quickly changed to "Buzz" as Jeff said, "No way am I driving a horse named "Risky." From then on a beautiful partnership was formed and the team hit the Northeast as a force to be reckoned with in all parts of the carriage driving division. In the first year, Buzz and Jeff picked up a championship win at the New England Morgan Horse Show. He would go on to win many more in every Morgan carriage division at all the shows throughout New England. They campaigned the Morgan horse proud, winning championships on the Open circuit such as Orelton and GMHA, as well as various Carriage Pleasure shows and several Combined Driving Events.

Jeff showed Buzz in 115 carriage classes in New England and finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in 105 of them. The pair represented the American Driving Society and the Morgan breed for AMHA at the World Equestrian Games in 2010. In 2016, Buzz was on the cover of the American Driving Society's monthly magazine, The Whip, with an amazing action shot that Jeff says is the best of any horse he has ever driven. He has been to the Equine Affair a handful of times as an ambassador for the breed. Lately, he has found his calling in a new sport of Driving Derbies which is a full out galloping obstacle race.

This past Fall he participated in the Fantasia show with a derby driving exhibition for 3 nights in front of an audience of 6000 people. Jeff says it was all a thrill for him and Buzz loved it and put on a great show. After the last performance, while he was unhooking, a woman approached them and told him that all her life she had thought of driving as boring until she saw Buzz and Jeff flying through their derby course. As far as Jeff is concerned, this is the desired result !

In addition to all these amazing accomplishments, this 23 year old gelding has also been a teacher. He has been Jeff's main lesson horse and he has been shown in competition by several amateurs and has won many championships for them.

Buzz truly encompasses all qualities that we hold dear as the quintessential Morgan. He is beautiful to look at, smart in many ways, agile and unyielding and very excited to do his job ! (Video of Jeff driving can be seen at htttps:// YouTube.be/erlhEPliGOC)

Every year, the Mass Morgan Horse Show opens the gates to Morgan horses, their skilled and dedicated trainers, and excited owners and riders/drivers at what has become the 3rd largest Morgan horse show in the country. Long before the gates open the hard work of organising, planning and coordinating everything from the stall set ups to the ribbon presentations to the exhibitor parties is worked on with yet much, much more to be done at the show preparing for that first class.

Helen Guiheen and Cathy Miller's horse "Jack " started his show career at the MMHS and never missed a show, as they shared with us in the article that follows.

So it is that the memory keepers and the memory makers come together as Gail L.Green wrote in the Morgan Horse in July, 1962.....

"Leaning on the fence by a show ring, chin resting on folded arms, dust filling eyes and mouth, muscles aching from sponging, brushing, wiping; mind tired from little sleep, attention held by hope for the next class, the next ribbon, the next thrill."

Mass Morgan and A Once In A Lifetime Horse Submitted by Helen Guiheen & Cathy Miller A little about "Champion Jack" as he was fondly called by many children, not because he was a Champion carriage horse (that didn't happen until much later in his life) but because he was a friend to all... a true Champion. HG Black Jack (UVM Heritage x Bald Mt. Patricia) was bred by Helen Guiheen and was born on May 31, 1983. He was raised on Crestwind Farm in Southampton, MA. Crestwind is owned by Helen Guiheen and Cathy Miller.

It wasn't all about the ribbons to start. It was all about the friendships that were formed because of one beautiful soul named Black Jack. He started his show career at the Mass Morgan Horse Show, a favourite place to be for sure and Jack never missed a MMHS. He started his career as a two year old driving horse and he was such a good boy. He continued his MMHS career with either Helen riding or driving him in classic pleasure. Again, it wasn't about the ribbons but about the friends and joy this horse brought to anyone that got to know him. At the young age of four he took a young rider (Candace Scribner Daigneault) to her first walk,trot,canter class and he took such good care of her. Candace's younger sister, Holly, would also walk him in front of the barn under our watchful eye.

Jack was friends and the favourite to all the kids he met. He touched the lives of so many people. He was our best friend and always there when we needed him. There was nothing better than going out to the barn and having Jack there to take out for a peaceful trail ride or drive and make the day a better day.

It seemed that Jack was willing to take on any challenge in his life.

Helen was asked to ride him in the Polish parade in Northampton, MA two years in a row. He handled the crowds and the bands like a pro. After the parade, the road was supposed to be closed to traffic for the short ride back through Northampton to the horse trailer. The ride took a bit longer due to all the attention he drew and his dependable personality was true to form as he had to stop along the way for petting but took his rider back safely through all the traffic.

At age 14, Lani Sattler suggested that Jack should try carriage driving.

With her help, we started training Jack and he thought it was now time to become known as the " Champion" Jack we knew he was, but this time in the carriage world. Jack was shown at all the Morgan shows in the Massachusetts area. He went on to become a wonderful, safe and consistent carriage horse, winning numerous championships at the New England Morgan Shows. The Mass Morgan Horse Show was a must and always a favourite because of all the good friends and good times we had there.

Jack lived a long healthy life and he will be forever in our hearts. At the age of 31, on February 29, 2016, he was laid to rest in the same pasture he ran in as a young foal. Thank you Jack for being that special boy, always bringing laughter and joy to so many... a once in a lifetime horse !

Family Traditions with the Morgan Horse Submitted by; Sue Galvin

For the past fourteen years, the Chloe Miller Perpetual Trophy has been presented to the winner of the Ladies Pleasure Driving class at the Mass Morgan Horse Show. This trophy is presented annually in Chloe's memory by her family and friends.

For those who did not know Chloe, she was a true horse woman who dedicated her life and love to the Morgan horse. Her vast knowledge of the breed touched many people within the equine world. First, second and third generations admired her dedication, spirit and enthusiasm to promote the Morgan breed. She very often gave others unconditional opportunities to use her Morgans in a variety of ways.

As a child, Chloe loved horses. In adulthood she shared this love with her husband, Earl K.Miller. Chloe and E.K. showed Morgans in the New England show circuit. In 1966, Chloe attended a weanling sale at Greenmeads Farm in Richmond, Massachusetts. She purchased a filly named Stardust Melody. It was a life long relationship between owner and horse that was meant to be. In the pleasure driving division they were unbeatable. After a successful show career, Melody became a brood mare and gave Chloe four foals over the years: Sir Etude, Dame Dolce, Baroness Brio and Lord Nexus.

Both Chloe and Melody's traditions have continued through Chloe's grand niece, Kendra Trainor. Kendra has fond memories of Chloe teaching her how to ride, drive and care for horses in a way that was educational and fun. Kendra started her show career under saddle with Baroness Brio. In 2001 she placed first in the Youth Pleasure Mares class at the Mass Morgan Horse Show.

In 1999, Chloe and Kendra made the decision to breed Baroness Brio to Nemours Port Royal. In March of 2000 a colt arrived named Do Re Mi ("Buzz"), named by Kendra's cousin, Megan Trainor. Kendra currently shows "Buzz" in the Classic Pleasure Driving division under the direction of Ann Anderson of Hobby Knoll Stables, Inc. In 2001, Stardust Melody passed away at the age of thirtyfive. Chloe passed away the following year. Chloe would have been pleased to know that Kendra has continued the tradition of owning, promoting and showing Morgan horses.

As has been the tradition, on August 17, 2017 at the Mass Morgan Horse Show in centre ring, the Chloe Miller Perpetual Trophy and the blue ribbon will be presented to the winner of the Ladies Pleasure Driving class.

UMass Hadley Farm Congratulations to Helen Guiheen and Cathy Miller who have adopted Bay State Unique ( Windcrest Highlander X Darlie's Cevanna) from the UMass Hadley Farm. "Nikki" was retired from the UMass Equine Program this year where she was used in hunter classes on the flat and over fences.

Welcome to Crestwind Farm, "Nikki " !

MMHA Silent Auction....2017 The UMass Equine program was one of the recipients of the proceeds from the Mass Morgan Silent Auction in 2014 !

In May, 2017 the UMass Hadley farm announced its newest arrival, "Bay State Moonlight Mischief ".

Bay State Moonlight Mischief was sired by "GKB Coal Magic" owned by Dr. Lucy Tidd of Maryland and out of UC Mischief Magic.

A second Morgan foal is due on June 30th at the farm. This foal is also sired by GKB Coal Magic and out of the mare, HR Clearly Legal who is donated to the farm by Ann Hailey, Copper Beach Morgans.

Youth of the Year Contest Qualification Rule Change The Youth Council voted unanimously to change the way youth contestants qualify for the Grand National Youth of the Year Contest at their local level contest. Instead of only the winner of the contest qualifying for the Grand National, now any contestant who scores over 800 points at their local contest will be qualified for the Grand National Youth of the Year Contest ! This means there could be more than one youth representing their local show at the Grand National.

The Mass Morgan Horse Association will reimburse reasonable travel expenses to the winner of the Senior Youth Contest at Mass Morgan who participates in the contest at the Grand Nationals.

SHARE YOUR RECIPES FOR THE HORSE SHOWS,TRAIL RIDES AND ANYTHING ELSE HORSE RELATED !

Crockpot Enchilada Quinoa

1 cup quinoa 1/2 cup water 1 15oz can black beans drained and rinsed 1 15oz can corn, drained 2 15oz cans diced tomatoes 1 can Enchilada Sauce

Place beans, corn and tomatoes in a large 5-7 quart crockpot. In a bowl mix the water with the quinoa and add to the crockpot. Stir everything together. Top with the enchilada sauce. Cover and cook on high for 4 - 5 hours or on low for 8 hours. Top with shredded cheese. Serves 6.

Welcome New Board Members:

Julie Costello Julie is a Northampton native, who moved to Whately as a young girl where her love of horses flourished. She started riding in 4 H with her favorite pony "Doc". After a hiatus from horses while her 2 boys

were young, she started riding again with Cindy Mugnier and her lifelong dream of riding Morgans began.From Orrwoods Madison Bay to her "horse of a lifetime", LBJ Pure Elegance she has continued to show and become more involved with the Morgan breed. She loves the camaraderie and support of the Morgan family and is currently riding at Bellewether Stables. Her favorite saying is "the ride is the prize; a ribbon is just a bonus."

Julie is currently the CEO at the Hampshire Regional YMCA in Northampton, MA.

Jillian Marks Jillian has been an integral part of the MMHS in a variety of ways for several years. She has helped design and create centre ring and has been co-chair of the Show Committee for the past two years. Jillian also keeps busy in the show ring riding Andrea's Radiance in the Amateur Hunter Pleasure Division.
