St Joseph High School recently debuted the inaugural fall advertorial, which was inserted into thousands of newspapers throughout Connecticut by Hearst Media. The advertorial is a mixture of expert content written by our staff alongside advertisements from our community partners. St Joseph High School’s advertorial was a great success, being distributed to more than 240,000 homes and emailed to more than 75,000 recipients.

Since many of the editorial pieces in the advertorial are what we would normally place in our Communiqué, we have decided to combine the two. The advertorial has served as our Fall Communiqué and the Alumni News and Annual Report have now become digital.

We thank you for your trust and patience and as we move forward in this endeavour and digitize our Alumni News. This new format will allow for last minute additions as well as a larger audience. Speaking of which -- have you signed up for emails from our Alumni department? Sid Maietto ’74 was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association Hall of Fame on April 29, 2017. Sid’s career spanned 31 seasons beginning in 1970, to his retirement from the “hardwoods” in 2001. >

1980s Jerry Albrikes ’87 was 1 of 4 people inducted into the USTA New England Hall of Fame! According to USTA.com, Jerry was "a two-time Class M State Champion for St Joseph High School [...] in 1986 and 1987 and played collegiately at Central Connecticut State University. Following college, he held a top ranking in singles, doubles and mixed and consistently played New England tournaments until 2010, when he and his family moved to South Carolina. He captained multiple Church Cup teams and played in the Talbert Cup. Albrikes has led multiple Intersectional teams and Women’s USTA League Nationals team, coached the girls program at Lauralton Hall in Milford, CT and served as an assistant at his alma mater, CCSU." Photo Credit: USTA.com Jamie Weber ’88 was recently named the new assistant principal of both Elizabeth Shelton and Long Hill School in Shelton, CT. Jamie taught kindergarten and first grade for the better part of her last 24 years in Shelton classrooms and currently holds 092 Certification. The Intermediate Administrator (092) Certification Program is designed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be administrators in Connecticut’s schools in positions ranging from assistant principal up to, and including, assistant superintendent.

^Johnny Vazzano ’80, local restaurateur and entrepreneur, has been chosen as the 70th annual Ringmaster for the Barnum Festival. Johnny has chosen to celebrate First Responders and America’s Military during the 2018 celebrations. You can read more about Johnny at BarnumFestival.com.

Nanci Ferris-Zibell ’83 received the Excellence in Education “Going The Extra Mile” Award from Bridgeport Public Schools - Honoring Excellence in Education on May 22, 2017.

Nanci is a 28 year teaching veteran with Bridgeport Public Schools!

Veteran Head Football Coach, Joe Della Vecchia ’81 has been awarded the title of “Coach of the Week” the week of Sept 18 by the New York Giants following the team’s win against New Canaan and home opening win against Fairfield Warde. Congratulations Coach and the entire football program for your hard work!

Dana (Ganssle) Ellis ’99, AIA, was honored as one of Colorado Homes & Lifestyles’ annual “Five Under 40” special feature. Dana lives in Colorado with her husband, Isaac, and daughter, Aven (3). Read more about Dana here.

It Matters Where You Go to High School

Shelby Massaro ’94 felt inspired by her time at St Joes and joined her local church in Lehigh Acres, FL in helping those affected

by Hurricane Irma. According to Shelby, “The Catholic church I attend has been collecting for Catholic Charities in Lee county.

The Diocese of Venice has set up Hurricane Irma Relief centers throughout the Diocese. However, the need is more in Lehigh Acres, FL… The entire community has been helping out by providing meals, supplies, food, water, ice, etc.”

Timothy Milenkevich ’00 won the Long Island Marathon in an unofficial time of two hours, 45 minutes, 35 seconds on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

Joseph Cadrin, Jr ’02 graduated from Fairfield University on May 21, 2017 with a 3.98 GPA. Joe earned his MBA with a concentration in accounting information systems. He was also honored for the 2nd time and inducted for the 2nd time into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

Marianne Pysarchyk ’01 has been named Library Director of the Royalton Memorial Library in Vermont. Marianne holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Pratt Institute and a Master of Arts degree in Women’s Studies from Southern Connecticut State University.

Genee McGoldrick Habansky ’01 has a new column with the Fairfield Patch titled Cooking with Genee Habansky. She started her professional culinary career at the Natural Gourmet Institute, a plant-based culinary school that taught her vegan & allergy friendly cuisine. After school she worked in kitchens in restaurants such as the Dressing Room, Pageonos Seafood, Heirloom & lastly Walrus & Carpenter. These restaurants were all scratch kitchens that taught her everything from pastry & desserts to butchering & smoking meats. She then started Herbaceous Catering Company.

A catering company that works with farms all over Connecticut to create fun, innovative seasonal & delicious menus!

The Last Man on Earth is in its fourth season and airs Sundays at 9:30 pm on Fox.

Ed Voccola ’04 recently finished writing his latest episode of The Last Man on Earth - a show TIME magazine's called "The single most inventive show currently on TV" - where he can still be seen repping St Joes Lacrosse on set!

Alexander Scott Prewitt â&#x20AC;&#x2122;09 was one of 260 graduates awarded the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Dr Prewitt is continuing his medical training in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago Illinois in Chicago, IL.

Betsy Nilan â&#x20AC;&#x2122;09, President of the Get In Touch Foundation, gave a TedX Hartford talk on Sept 6, 2017. During the speech, Betsy stated, "What's important to me is the focus on HEALTH. I do not have cancer, so I can't speak on behalf of my mom or cancer survivors - but I can speak from my perspective, as a healthy 26-year-old in a leadership position. For so long I have been sharing my mom's story, and it wasn't until recently I realized it was time to tell my unique story, and share my passion for empowerment, knowledge and breast health education."

Trumbull Times reported that "As many as 2,000 hikers attempt to hike the trail each year, but only about 25% of them actually complete it. The hike typically takes five months or more, but McGovern made it in just over four months..."

Casey Miller ’10 graduated from Western New England University School of Law on May 21, 2017. Casey spent the summer preparing for the Bar Exam and then hopes to start her career practicing law in the health care field.

Richard Dowling III ’11 told the CSGA:

"The course really suits my game, I grew up playing here so I felt really good over the tee shots and I know the greens really well. I drove the ball really well all week and that was really the key for me. I didn’t make a lot of bogies and just kept the ball in play all week."

Bill McGovern ’12 recently completed the Appalachian Trail, a four-month hike that covered nearly 2,200 miles. Bill started from Springer Mountain in Georgia and ended on top of Mount Katahdin in Maine.

Pat Corcoran ’11 was recently signed to Florida Launch, a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Team.

According to the Stratford Star , " The MLL season lasts from April to August.

The league’s nine teams — located as far west as Denver — usually play one game a week on Saturdays. Crowds are in the 4,000 to 6,500 range."

Andrea Galeano ’15 competed in NCAA Track & Field Championships in Chicago after breaking school and conference records.

According to the Catholic University Athletics website, Andrea "smashed the Landmark and Catholic record in the weight throw, which she set earlier this season. She boomed a throw of 17.98 meters which was two meters longer than her previous mark. She now ranks seventh in the country after that throw."She was selected as the Landmark Conference "Field Athlete of the Year".

Matt Batten ’13 was drafted to the San Diego Padres after a killer senior year with the Quinnipiac Bobcats.

According to the CT Post, Matt "hit a team-best .305 with three home runs and 26 RBIs in his senior year with the Bobcats. He set a program record with 249 career hits and 65 stolen bases, and tied the school’s Division-I record for runs scored with 139."

Tony Leonardi ’16 started playing bass guitar for the Chicago-based rock band, Kodiak Grove, in November 2016. After a few performances, Tony became an official member of the group.

Justice Cook ’15 was recently named Station Point Allerton's Enlisted Person of the Quarter. Justice was commended by his Commanding Officer for serving as a strong role model for his peers, qualifying as a 47 Motor Life Boat Engineer, and participating in three Color Guard events. He was also commended for his participation in the Coast Guard Hockey Team, which went on to win the Heroes Cup Event. The event raised over $80,000 for multiple charitable hockey tournaments and gave the Coast Guard visibility in local news as well as a featured article on the Department of Homeland Securities' website.

of four years, graduated Eastern Connecticut State University in May 2017. Nicole graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. Kelsey graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Elementary Education.

Jillian Flint ’13 is currently working at Walt Disney World as a PhotoPass Photographer.

Since graduating from St Joes she has studied abroad and worked as a production intern in both London, UK and Los Angeles, CA. Jillian plans to move back to New York in January to pursue a job in video production in hopes of eventually moving back to the United Kingdom.

Andrew J Pia ’07 married his college sweetheart, Kimberly Gordon, on June 5, 2016 in Tarrytown, NY. Father Sam Kachuba ’01 blessed their marriage. Andrew and Kim graduated from Syracuse University and Andrew is a CPA with PWC in Stamford. It was a magnificent celebration!

Alexandria Roman ’05, sister of Dakota Roman ’11 and Christopher Williams ’06, son of Albert Williams, former Custodian at SJHS, tied the knot on September 9, 2017 surrounded by their family and friends. They were attended by their Best Man, Brian Williams ’08 and Matron of Honor, Susan Dowler Muise ’05. There were many alumni present at the wedding and in their Bridal Party. Ali and Chris cannot thank SJHS enough for bringing them together and being the place where they have found such amazing friendships.
