This portfolio contains various projects that carefully showcase different skills / architectural solutions to problems encountered during my education.

ABOUT ME

Having grown up embedded within the contrasting rule and urban landscapes, the differences between the two landscapes sparked a keen interest in architecture. This is also paired with family involvement in the construction industry and personal home DIY projects that directly exposed me to the construction industry. Some of my fondest childhood memories include visiting job sites and exploring large construction machinery. Naturally, I was drawn to architecture specifically as I was always interested in design, having played video games and started a freelance graphic design venture during high school.

BRIEF

As part of our learning for Architectural Visualization, our cohert was tasked to seek architectural competitions and to create a submission that aligns with the challenge principles, It was not mandatory to submit the competition as they extended beyond the scope of the work. However, the goal was to be exposed to different types of architecture and design challenges.

My teams chosen competition was the Buildner Modular Home Competition with aims to facilitate innovative design proposals of modular homes.

Our proposal aims to tackle the rising threat of cost of living through the use of mass-production and modular design. We plan to source and recycle materials within our assemblies to also push for a sustainable, cost efficient future.

ÅTERVINNA PREFABRICATED HOME PROBLEM STATEMENT

Global issues such as rising costs of land and building materials are demonstrating that current living arrangements are not as efficient or cost-effective as we require. We must come up with innovative ways to build homes to keep up with demand as the world’s population grows at an increasingly rapid rate.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Modular homes are a cost-effective way to build a home using prefabricated components that can be mass-produced and configured in a variety of layouts. Modular homes explore architectural design implementations that do not compromise efficiency, design, or sustainability to find solutions to rising construction costs and long build times.

Inspired by IKEA’s flat pack system.

Easy to interpret packing list and instructions with few written instructions and more graphics.

Each modular configuration comes with a unique set of instructions custom to the user’s home.

BRIEF

In Studio 6, we were provided with an existing historical stone mill to develop program to compliment the local community. The site is located at a small rural Ontario town named Paisley along the Teeswater river. The building is split into two zones, on eht left hand side, it is to remain as a hotel room and is to be un changed. However, the clients aim to develop the old silo at the right hand side of the building which is now the Teeswater Bar & Grill.

The goal of the project is to adaptively reuse the existing building and repurpose the historic stone mill building. The design proposes the silo to become a recreational building that provides dining, drinking, and entertainment for the residents of Paisley.

Currently, Paisley does not have a lot of gathering spaces due to the rural environment which places a heavy importance on creating entertainment areas for the community to enjoy and engage with nature.

The word Integration is a driving word that sparkes the essence of the design proposal. The project aims to achieve successful integration through careful consideration of material, nature, site design, social oriented program , and structure.

The existing building sits upon a slopping typology with the façade of the building facing south. With this knowledge, glazing will be prioritized in the south, and east elevations to integrate natural light into the spaces. Towards the north, the site features a large tree covered area, river, and grassy environment. these views can be taken advantage of and be integrated for glazing locations.

The design aims to connect people and integrate each other in a social environment that were once disconnected. The goal is to create a space where the community can gather, converse, and form meaningful relationships with one another. This is achieved through extensive social programming to promote community engagement.

Modern architecture creates its own “nature” in a sense of large-scale cities. The current practices of architecture cut out the importance of conntecting architecture and nature. My goal is to integrate nature into my design through a series of green walls and integrating the building into the site based on ecological features of the landscape.

I plan to integrate modern design trends into the exterior of the building, whilst complimenting / integrating the existing design within the design/ aesthetic of the space. The use of recycled materials will be integrated into my design to fortify the concept of integrating sustainability into the design.

INTEGRATION + STRUCTURE

The structure is to be exposed is integrated into millwork. The addition satisfys the code regulations in terms of means of egress, accessibility, washroom facilities. The extensions rooftop can be used as a terrace that harnesses the unique opportunity of its location, access to views, and sunlight.

BRIEF

The goal of this studio project is to think of Architecture as a piece of the puzzle in our communities. We are challenged to seek the bigger picture and to incorporate our design proposal into a larger context in a form of a masterplan. The goal is to solve unique complex problems that exist within the site study areas to create a solution through architectural and urban development.

My proposal aimed to strengthen community engagement in the area providing much needed gathering spaces. Additionally, the current neighbourhood is located within a historical industrial zone which is still visually present through it is a residential zone. The goal of the project is to develop the previously blighted industrial zone whilst aligning with detroits masterplan of local developments.

RIVERSIDE SYNC MIXED-USE APARTMENTS PROJECT STATEMENT

The site features a social, physical, and visual disconnection from the riverfront. The site needs to take advantage of the developments that will find their way onto the site soon. With the disconnection comes water management issues through the poor planning of impervious and pervious material. It is imperative to develop the local environment to meet known future demands to ensure that occupants have the ability to navigate around the community.

Additionally, “third places” or public social areas are severely lacking in an area of such potential and near a college campus.

Strategies include carefully replanning street layouts for more robust circulation access to site amenities.

Widening some streets may allow for a stronger visual connection using an uninterrupted solid axis.

This may be paired with increased density along critical areas that enforce a curated view. However, materials vary along the site and it needs to be carried into the upper streets. Combining all these strategies will bridge the current disconnection in the site area.

GATHERING RESPONSE

THEN Future developments must provide additional infrastructure for pedestrians and bikers to navigate the spaces. However, major roads such as Fort and Jefferson must consider the safety of the bikers when developing bike lanes.

The current streetscape has the potential to widen roads to accommodate a careful reconsideration of its circulation system. Queens Plaza in New York City is a strong precedent of utilizing greenspace to incorporate circulation elements. It also allows for a visual connection to the surrounding area and acts as a redirection point. However, more simplistic constructions may utilize existing infrastructure to rezone street lanes for bike designation. However, barriers will need to be implemented to ensure the safety of bikers.

RIVERSIDE SYNC MIXED-USE APARTMENTS PEDESTRIAN ROAD

The internal “Pedestrian Road” allows for multi-purpose gathering opportunities. This allows for community ran events such as farmers markers or street performances. Initially, the idea was to create an access inlet for vehicular traffic, but upon further analysis, it would have caused a detrimental vehicular dominance. The pedestrian road allows vehicular access to authorized vehicles (such as emergency or event staff).

MASTERPLAN

The masterplan aims to increase axial relationships to the riverfront and to create a "redirection" around the massive Post-Office building. The goal is to strengthen future developments and align with Detroits future masterplanning ideas / developments.

The sites masterplan finds itself integrated both physically and visually with the careful curation of circulation networks and interplay with future developments
