A VILLAGE Final Thoughts

By Jessica Collins and Andre Hampton It takes a village is a nonprofit that provides Afterschool care for at-risk youth in Crisfield, MD. Their mission is "to engage the 'village' to help build a better future for our children by providing activities designed to promote their spiritual, social, and educational well-being so they can reach their fullest potential.

On April 25, 2022, graduate students Andre Hampton and Jessica Collins, of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program went to "It Takes a Village" to do a workshop with middle school students to provide counseling to students to increase social and emotional support to improve issues surrounding mental health and COVID19. Students learned how to cope with COVID-19, education, and health cope mechanisms to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. In addition, we provided suicide awareness information and shared resources with the participants. .

Andre Hampton said, "Educating kids about the effects of COVID19had on the world is important. The state of everyone's mental health and day-to-day living drastically changed in a short period. Going to this program gave us the privilege of educating the next generation of leaders in a fun way". Jessica stated that they wanted to do something interactive and fun. They did COVID Bingo with the students. The bingo game had things that happened during COVID-19, like losing somebody, and activities or things done like staying in pajamas all day or watching TV Participants had to cross off whatever they experienced or did during the COVID-19 lockdown until they got Bingo. The game's goal was to pick out students who showed signs of depression and anxiety or went through trauma, and then we would talk about it with them. They explored coping skills if they spoke to anyone about their feelings and new ways to deal with the stressors. Participating in this game allowed students to talk about their experiences without feeling put on the spot or under pressure.

Jessica and Andre stated, "It was eyeopening to see how the students dealt with Covid and how traumatic it was for some. One of the biggest takes aways was how difficult it was to go back to in-person classes after being online for many participants. They no longer liked school or wanted to be there.

Overall, we had fun with students while diving into some deep topics, including grief, depression, behavioral issues, and everything to do with school. It is crucial for teachers, parents, and healthcare providers to be aware of the prolonged impact of the pandemic on children/youth and provide the service and be mindful of resources to support them in moving forward.

STUDENT REHABILITATION ASSOCIATION JOIN US NOW! Student Rehabilitation Association is an undergraduate organization of the Rehabilitation Department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

IT'S PURPOSE IS TO INFORM THE STUDENT BODY, FACULTY AND COMMUNITY ABOUT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DISORDERS We hold different events around campus to spread disability awareness and network with other organizations. It is also an opportunity for students to network and learn about the department. The events we've done include, bake sales to raise awareness, health fairs, local community service and more. We've cleaned up a shelter for a Thanksgiving play, handed out candy for Halloween, and more, Additionally, members can attend conferences throughout the year to learn about

New to The Department LATOYA RAY My name is Latoya Ray. I’m the new Administrative Assistant for the Department of Rehabilitation.I graduated from Wor-Wic Community College with an Associate Degree in Office Technology. I started my career in the Healthcare field working as a Medical Receptionist, Scheduling Coordinator, Referral Specialist and Medical Assistant.

I decided to take my career to a new level and come on board to become a Hawk. I’m excited to work with the staff and grow in my new career.

NAMRC 2022 VIRTUAL CONFERENCE Tiara Batchelor, Cidnee Boykin, Jessica Collins

On July 21st and 22, I virtually attended the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC) conference. The conference theme was "Transforming Rehabilitation: Excellence, Advocacy, Justice, and Equity," which was strongly displayed in their eighteen concurrent sessions.

Each session was filled with vital information about different topics within the field of Rehabilitation Counseling. It also explained how the intersection of racism, sexism, and classism directly impacts how counselors can provide a tailored therapeutic support experience for their clients.

The genogram informative session was a specific session that I found very interesting and beneficial as I continue to advance in my counseling career.

The speaker demonstrated how to create a genogram and thoroughly explained the importance of understanding how to do one. While listening to the speaker, I realized how crucial it is to be aware of the intergenerational trauma present in the client's life, especially as someone who wants to be a family and children's counselor. I now recognize how vital it is to understand the "whys" and "hows" of thoughts and behaviors so that they can benefit the healing process. Overall, I enjoyed learning a new perspective from culturally competent experts within the Rehabilitation Counseling field. Tiara Batchelor

Attending my first NAMRC conference was very informative, mind-changing, and an experience that I am elated to have been a part of and benefit from. The conference provided a multitude of sessions; however, the session that stood out to me was Trauma Reformed Care: Addressing Trauma and Addiction in the Black Community. This particular session stood out to me because it directly impacts my community as a whole. Where I am from and in my culture, African Americans suffer from a lot of past trauma that they cannot seem to overcome but are also afraid to talk about in order to overcome it. This session talked about how we (as counselors) can help guide our clients through tough times that they have endured or that have been passed down to them and work to heal that pain or trauma, as well as how to not repeat the pattern. It also taught us that, as a culture, we have to learn to be okay with communicating our feelings

and emotions and also learn how to communicate our feelings. In conclusion, I walked away from this session (and others) with new knowledge and tools that I will apply to my clients once I become a counselor. -Cidnee Boykin

During the conference, I listened to a total of six sessions about new developments or new things to learn in the rehabilitation counseling field. Out of the six, there were two that really stuck out to me since I could use what I learned with what I am doing in the field now. The two that stood out to me were An Ethical Program: How Family and Background Influence Decision-Making in Rehabilitation Counseling and Trauma-Informed Care: Addressing Trauma and Addiction in the Black Community. As someone who is currently in and will continue to work in the substance abuse and addiction services field, both of these sessions really spoke into the best ways of working with these populations with real-life examples and not just straight textbook information. I found the information necessary for me to have a successful career.

NCRE SPRING CONFERENCE AN INVITATION TO CONTINUE EDUCATING OURSELVES AND UPDATING OUR KNOWLEDGE TO THE NEW GENERATIONS By: CarmenMercedes Ramos & Hector Jose Velazques-Gonzalez Keeping abreast of new trends in your professional field is essential in this globalized era where everything is constantly changing and renewing.

Besides, attending events where professionals from all over the country and from different parts of the world give you the opportunity to expand your network of professional contacts. Therefore professional development requires attending conferences. As educators and aspiring future professionals in the field of rehabilitation and counseling we must continue educating ourselves to keep up to date with the new generations and their needs. Hence, the NCRE 2022 Spring Conference titled Promoting equity through education, research, and practice, provided a space to address rehabilitation professionals issues and the knowledge required to successfully carry out our work. Some of the topics discussed during the

conference were multiculturalism, supervision skills, teaching in rehabilitation counseling, self-care, psychosocial adaptation of disability, inclusion, racial plurality, sexual diversity, among others.

One fascinating topic discussed was summarized the affective diversity, a term that is gaining strength and is the most respectful way to cover the wide spectrum of interest, self-worth and needs.

For students and faculty members at UMES, attending events such as conferences, seminars, symposiums, and workshops, presents two great opportunities for professional development: updating your knowledge and networking. During the NCRE 2022 Spring Conference, diversity was a constant theme. Following this idea, we would like to highlight the gender ideology and sexual diversity issue. As rehabilitation professionals, we must respect and acknowledge diversity in all its manifestation. Our practice in this field will be ethical, sensitive, and human.

Let's remember that the world and society are constantly changing, therefore, practices, language and laws are also constantly changing. TELE COUNSELING WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW

For a number of reasons, that include recent developments in technology, the popularization of on line meeting spaces such as google meets, and the need to continue counseling sessions while addressing COVID concerns, on line therapy has and continues to receive a great deal of attention.

live in remote areas. For those who have physical limitations, on line therapy is a viable and practical alternative. Since you can attend counseling sessions in your own home, on line therapy is quite convenient, and it allows you to save on travel time and transportation cost.

The practice of on line counseling and therapy has existed for decades in under one name or another. Von Hafften, (1998), reported, that “the Nebraska Psychiatric institute was using early videoconferencing to provide group therapy” as early as 1959. (Rauch, 2017) On the other hand credits Stanford and UCLA staff for using linked computers to demonstrate a psychotherapy session in 1973. Therefore, when the practice became popular depends on whom you ask and how you define it.

Barriers to on line counseling may include a number of practical concerns. To begin with, some insurance companies may not reimburse for on line counseling services. This option may not be suitable for treating some conditions such as serious mental health issues and some treatment approaches may require in person meetings.

There a states that simply do not allow out of state providers. Responding to crises at a distance can present unique challenges, especially is immediate follow up is required.

You may well start this conversation by asking, what exactly is Online Therapy? The short answer is that it is Counseling, psychotherapy or closely related services such as vocational counselling, that takes place using an on line medium. This could mean that you are using google meets or a similar computer based service, or it could be that you are using face time or some other video conferencing or calling app. Be aware that many people may use similar terms such as tele therapy while others will use terms such as on line counseling, tele-mental health, tele-psychology, cyber counseling, e counseling or e-therapy.

Why use online therapy? There are numerous reasons to support the use of on line therapy. E counseling is a good alternative for getting counseling services to those who

In conclusion, while some people may prefer on line therapy, there are many who may not be comfortable with counseling on line. For the counselor this presents a unique set of challenges since from an ethical perspective we should be concerned with ensuring that our clients receive the best and most effective service possible.

HONOR'S SOCIETIES

Chi Sigma Iota is an international honor society that values academic and professional excellence in counseling. They promote a strong professional identity through members (professional counselors, counselor educators, and students) who contribute to the realization of a healthy society by fostering wellness and human dignity. Students must have be enrolled in a master’s program in counseling and have a 3.5 GPA to qualify for membership.

The National Society of Allied Health (NSAH) is the official voice for Historically Black Colleges and Universities with schools or programs of allied health, providing a forum for faculty, students, and practitioner development. The NSAH networks and collaborates with other organizations that address health issues that affect the African American communities through education, research, practice, and service delivery.

NSAH is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Eligible applicants should meet the following criteria: Must be an Allied Health major, must have a 3.2 GPA and must have completed two semesters in an allied health program.
