RE-Building Blocks

Through the analysis of the immediate site and it’s context within downtown Sudbury, it was apparent that there was a substantial population that was struggling with a lack of housing and addictions. By using the 6 domains of Social Determinates of Health (SDH) as building blocks the project aims to help rebuild oneself from unhomed and dependent to independence and stability. Programs, like art therapy, counseling, resource centers, cafeteria, and multipurpose rooms integrated within the project directly pertain to the 6 domains.

In addition to providing the domains of the SDH the project has also used trauma informed design to ensure comfortability of residences.

Trauma informed design can be defined as a design practice that uses the core principles of trauma informed care; empathy and understanding. When design for residence who have experienced or experiencing traumatic events, like homelessness and additions, it is important to be mindful in the design of the spaces they will inhabit. Avoiding design cues to traumatic events is an integral part of creating a space that allows it’s users to feel safe, relax and comfortable.

CHILD DAYCARE CENTRE

A TREE NEEDS SPACE THAT FEELS OPEN AND EXPOSED TO NATURAL ELEMENTS TO GROW, WITHOUT IT, IT MAY BE A BIT MORE DIFFICULT.

A CHILD AT A YOUNG AGE THAT IS IN CONSTANT EXPOSURE TO NATURAL ELEMENTS, ALLOWS FOR AN IN CREASE IN POSITIVE GROWTH, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, WITHOUT IT, IT MAY BE A BIT MORE DIFFI CULT.

A CHILD SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY IN A SPACE THAT FEELS OPEN, A SPACE THAT FEELS EXPOSED TO NAT URAL ELEMENTS, A SPACE THAT DOESN’T FEEL CON STRAINING, WHILE STILL BEING PROTECTED WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE BUILDING.

Sudbury Art Museum

The Silos found in the Flour mill community in Sudbruy pres ents itself as a significant vertical structure that once sup ported the community.

This proposel aims to bring back that idea of support back to the silos. Creating a visual representation of the silods con tinuing to carry the history that the galleries will provide and the community that continues to interac t with it, regardless if ther are present in the museum or just on a daily walk.

BACKYARD SHED DESIGN

SUMMER OF 2020, I WAS PLANNING ON SEARCHING FOR CO-OP PLACEMENTS THAT WOULD LAND ME IN FIELDS OF CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALITY. A FEW UNFORTUNATE EVENTS OCCURRED AND I WAS LEFT WITH FINDING ANOTHER WAY TO DO BOTH WITHOUT A PLACEMENT.

I THEN DECIDED TO REALLY TAKE ON A BUILD THAT WOULD ALLOW ME TO HAVE BOTH THE CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALTY ASPECT IN THE BUILD.

THE BUILD WAS A SHED DESIGN THAT WAS LOCATED IN THE BACK CORNER OF MY BACKYARD THAT OVERTIME WAS AN AREA THAT COLLECTED RANDOM OBJECTS AND MATERIALS BECAUSE IT HAD NO OTHER USE.

I USED THAT TO MY ADVANTAGE AND DESIGNED A SMALL SHED USING 2X4’S TO CONSTRUCT THE BUILD.

DOING THIS PROJECT ON MY OWN ALLOWED ME TO REALLY QUESTION HOW SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF A BUILD ISCONSTRUCTED, FOR EXAMPLE FOUNDATION AND PANELING.

THIS BUILD REALLY HELPED TEACH ME A LOT OF THE BASICS OF CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALTY THAT I BELIEVE EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE A PART OF.

DUALITY

VINCENT MAK AND JAN PAOLO MASANGKAY | STEVEN BEITES | ARCH 4306 EL | APRIL 2022

We've noticed that the School of Architecture has these moments throughout the urban space and exterior that we feel isn't being used to its fullest potential for social interaction.

The school provides several overhangs that could create areas of social interaction and pause. This can be seen slightly with the benches on the north side along Elm Street. However, through our observations, the benches do not provide and create an environment to stay and socialize.

There are 2 instances with the school's overhangs that could provide a sheltered area of gathering and pause, North-west corner, and the South.

We are proposing urban furniture that would utilize the school's overhang on the south side and create a space for gathering and pause.

McEwen School of Architecture’s urban space can be developed further for moments of pause and social interaction.

Under the cantilever created by the library on the second floor introduces a new space for people to pause and interact. The solution towards revitalizing this space is to propose (title), a dual sided urban furniture placed under the cantilever that merges with the existing building and urban design, but also providing users with a space to sit and have a moment of peace. (title)’s goal is to provide users a sense of shelter, by emphasizing the cantilevering space of the building.
