President’s Welcome 会長の挨拶 あそびましょう！ Contact: president@jltasa.asn.au あけおめ！Spending Christmas and New Year in Japan was the perfect way to close and start a year. In addition to much eating, drinking, walking + shopping, I spent some time reflecting on 2023, including JLTASA’s accomplishments from 2023.

It would be remiss of me to even begin talking about 2024 until we pay homage to what we achieved over the past 12 months: A testament to being named a ‘finalist’ for Educators SA’s ‘Most Innovative Association Award’, last year saw a few firsts, such as the ‘In Conversation’ Bounenkai/AGM, where we heard from local Japanese/British/Adelaide author Katherine Tamiko and spent the evening in deep conversation all about Japanese food and culture.

A memorable experience indeed!

We also trialled an Immersion PL (though thwarted a few times by strike action), and hope to roll this out in a larger capacity year-on-year to further support teachers feeling confident in their language ability.

After encountering a few too many roadblocks in our attempts to offer a thorough schools’ ‘Ghibli Fest’, we collaborated with JAFA for a mini-

version of a movie program for schools at the Mercury Cinema in early December.

Lastly, our new Virtual Middle School Escape Room was taken up by an estimated 2000 students, a mammoth milestone indeed. My hands have almost recovered from all the cutting, trimming, and sorting, ready for this year’s!

And so now we turn our attention to the Year of the Dragon. This year we focus on play for our 2024 Annual Conference. Why play? Japanese teachers are renown for devising fun and exciting ways to teach and engage students, to develop deep passion for the country, language and culture for all in their community. The pressure to constantly “sell” the importance and relevance of language (and culture) learning is relentless, but boy can we and do we have some fun along the way! Let’s spend some time in May sharing how we can foster this fun, joyful experience of language and culture learning, to continue to instil a love of Japan and Japanese amongst our communities.

Tom Dawson トム・ドーソン 2023 JLTASA President Tom is entering his seventh year of teaching Year 7-12 Japanese at Gleeson College in Golden Grove, along with other subjects such as Business and Innovation. His love of Japan and Japanese began from an early age, studying Japanese from Reception through to Stage 2, before studying at UniSA and Kansai Gaidai in Hirakata, Kansai for six months.

We recommend pre-arranging your risk assessment and excursion paperwork at the beginning of the year, as many events keep the same format, location and/or timing as with previous years. Don’t forget, you may be eligible for a student event travel grant if you are in a regional or low-socioeconomic area.

^Immersion PLs Immersive stand-alone sessions conducted in Japanese (with bilingual support materials) with the dual aim of giving teachers a chance to practise their Japanese while also modelling an activity that they can do in language with their students. Teachers are encouraged to engage at their level and all levels of Japanese proficiency are welcome. There will be a small charge for each session to cover the cost of materials.

A new Facebook Group for members who teach SACE has been created to help collaborate and to support the Senior Hub Group (Years 10-12). First Senior Hub Meeting will be at EDC in the coming weeks (in-person only). Second meeting will be via Zoom.

Graeme Watkins

Regional Liaison Graeme is an enthusiastic language nerd who has taught and lived in Mount Gambier, Port Lincoln, and Naracoorte.

He is passionate about bringing languages to regional settings, and is currently working as the IB MYP Coordinator at Unity College, Murray Bridge. Hub Group Grant Reports 2023 Western Suburbs Hiragana Competition After a couple of quiet years through COVID, it was great to see our Western Suburbs Primary School Hiragana Competition return to a full-size event. We had 16 teams from 6 different schools attend which allowed us to run two round robin competitions culminating in a playoff between the top teams to find our champions.

This year the podium went to: 1. Flinders Park PS 2. West Beach PS 3. West Beach PS A big thank you to Kidman Park PS for hosting the event and to JLTASA for their ongoing sponsorship. The students loved our prize table this year and were excited by their small participation gifts and larger prizes throughout the day for our Atama and Oshiri game and Kendama challenges.

A BIG thank you to JLTASA for supporting these events with funding grants, helping to boost the profile of Japanese in our school communities.

Student Activity Grant: Let’s Fly to Japan!

handed me their passports and found a seat with their buddy.

As part of my Reception unit ‘What is Japan’ I wished to create an authentic language experience that would be a highlight for a student’s first year of Japanese. Playbased learning is so important in the early years and this year’s Reception cohort has students with many complex behavioural and academic needs. They need constant tactile activities and movement.

We then watched the Japan Airlines safety briefing in English and Japanese and students were able to hear lots of “くださ い” expressions. The plane faced towards my classroom TV screen, so I was able to show a video of a plane taking off from the point of view of a passenger. This helped it feel like we were really taking off.

The creation of a ‘plane’ was made possible with the funds provided by this grant and it will be able to double as a Shinkansen so I can make use of it in multiple ways and across all year levels.

In Term 1, students learned greetings in Japanese and produced a ‘greetings passport’ that I told them we would use in the future to travel to Japan. I prepared a passport photo of each student to go inside their passport.

In Term 2 we focused on manners and using expressions like please and thank you.

Students were able to use all their learning in our plane ride to Japan.

In the last lesson of Term 2, I collected my Reception classes from their own room and allocated them a travel buddy and handed them their passports. I told them we were catching our flight to Japan and we revised the words/phrases we’d used this year.

They walked into the Japanese classroom to discover a plane. There were squeals of delight as they discovered the plane and

The plane announcement bell sounded and I told them I would be serving Ramen for dinner and they needed to use “please and thank you” like we had been practising over the last few weeks.

I wheeled my trolley down the aisle and handed them the cup ramen that I also made using the allocated grant money. Students were given disposable chopsticks and a quick tutorial about using them. They did really well and were excited to take them home with them after the lesson.

It was a huge success. I had many messages from parents who said that it was all their children were talking about.

One parent sent me a photo of their child using the chopsticks to eat his dinner that same night.

My Year 6s helped me set up the plane and have all requested to play with the plane/shinkansen next term.

Thank you so much for providing this grant. It has been so worthwhile, and this resource will last long into the future to provide the students at Warradale Primary many happy memories of learning Japanese.

We then watched a bit of the movie “Ponyo”. I showed them footage of Tokyo at night from a plane flying overhead. We had a little ‘sleep’ and then ‘woke up’ to a new day in Tokyo. I showed another flight video of a plane landing in Tokyo.

We could see Tokyo Skytree and how huge the city was. So much bigger than Adelaide. As students got off the plane they said ありがとうございます and/or さようなら.

Student Activity Grant: Japanese Cultural Day (Tea Ceremony) Alysha Larcombe, Hallett Cove Sth PS On Tuesday the 28th February Hallett Cove South Primary School was very fortunate to have Fe Gilbey come and show students a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The students were all able to whisk their own tea and try it with a mochi cake. Fe taught the students new vocabulary and the proper way they conduct a tea ceremony in Japan. The students had a wonderful time and were very excited to try something new even though not all enjoyed the bitter taste. The sweet mochi cake was definitely a hit though. ページ 14

TAIKO Workshop Fernanda Ikeda, Millicent HS Millicent High School is located on the Limestone Coast in regional South Australia. We are located approximately 450 km from Adelaide and access to the city and its cultural opportunities is expensive and difficult for our students.

Earlier this term our years 7 and 8 Japanese students had the chance to participate in a Taiko drumming workshop incursion. They had a wonderful hands-on experience whilst immersing themselves in the Japanese culture and language.

We welcomed sensei Kiyomi, from Tyke-Oh, to teach us basic Japanese drumming skills. Through engaging patterns and challenging movement sequences, students improved with every beat.

Sensei Kiyomi engaged every participant and by the end of each session everyone was able to follow her lead, sounding superb - check the video.

Such a workshop is very special to us at Millicent High School.

Having access to authentic learning opportunities like this is what makes learning different cultural perspectives all the more interesting. Students consolidated their language skills and had the opportunity to further develop their personal and social capabilities. This prepared them for the incoming online exchange with Wake Junior High School in Japan next term.

A massive thank you goes to the JLTASA - Japanese Language Teachers Association of South Australia, for supporting us in this initiative through their grants programs. Without this support, country kids would not have access to such authentic learning opportunities.

Travel Grant: Year 6 Quiz Day Brinkworth & Blyth PS On behalf of Brinkworth Primary and Blyth Primary schools, we would like to say thank you to JLTASA for the opportunity to attend the Year 5 & 6 Japanese Quiz Day in June. Our successful grant application paid for a bus charter to travel to and from Adelaide from the mid north of SA; a 4 hour round trip. Our combined 18 students enjoyed putting their Japanese knowledge to the test in a unique environment, collaborating with and competing against other students from different schools.

Overall, our students said the highlight of their day was meeting new people from different schools and working together with them and learning more about Japan and the Japanese language on the day! Receiving Pocky sticks at the end of the quiz made it even more fun according to the students.

We rounded off our day by heading to the Sushi Train at Welland Plaza – a new experience for many students. Our students put their language skills to the test, ordering dishes in Japanese, with some students even trying new dishes for the first time. It was encouraging to hear some students say they want to bring their families to Sushi Train next time they go to Adelaide and share their knowledge of Japanese with them.

A big thank you to Mel, her students, and the JLTASA organisers for a fantastic and well organised event. We hope our schools can combine again and attend the event annually from now on, as it will be a great way to motivate and reward our future Japanese learners.
