Save the Date for the 18th Annual Holiday Shoppes November 15 – 17th at the NYS Fairgrounds Horticulture Building!

The event is only a few weeks away and the Steering Committee is working hard, organizing what will hopefully be the best Holiday Shoppes yet. Although we are in the same building, a new layout and new decorations will create a different flow and feel to the event.

Look forward to walking into a Winter Wonderland!

Pre-sale tickets for League members dropped to $5 this year. Price Chopper presale tickets will remain at $6, and general admission will remain at $8. Weekend passes are available for an additional $2. More of a reason to encourage people to buy tickets from you! The Steering Committee is counting on the support of members to sell tickets and to staff the event. The ticket and staffing requirements remain the same for Active and Associate members, but the price of the ticket requirement went down to $25 from the $30 in previous years. The one five-hour shift remains the same. A few incentives have been created for members who sell more than the minimum requirement. Any member who sells 10 tickets at a value of $5 per ticket will attend the 2013 Holiday Party at no cost (beverages not included). The three members who

sell the most tickets (minimum of 30 tickets sold) at a value of $5 per ticket will receive complimentary dues for the 2014 – 2015 JLS League year. So please sell, sell, sell! Put flyers up. Send out e-mails. Ask your friends.

Help us make this a successful event!

We currently have 103 secured booths filled, and the number keeps growing! Of these booths, we have 66 returning merchants and 28 new merchants. Some of our returning merchants include our old favorites such as: A La Maison, Natural Creations, and Boom Babies. We are also excited to introduce some of our new merchants: Lockwood Lavender Farm, Zilla’s Queen, and Windfall Studio. Raffle prizes and event sponsors are being finalized and will be announced soon, but we can confirm that we have secured Cazenovia Jewelry, Mirbeau Spa, and two tickets to Syracuse Stage. Tickets for these big-ticket raffle items will go on sale before the event so keep a look out in the e-mail blasts.

advertising for the event. Keep your eyes out for our poster boards, located on 606 N State St, 2982 E Genesee St, 4938 W Genesee St, and 1511 W Genesee St Stop. Take a picture, and post on Facebook if you can! Billboard locations will be released soon. We will have commercials running on News Channel 9 and YNN throughout the weekend of the event, and radio ads on Y94FM and 93Q! The Communications Council is working hard to promote Holiday Shoppes on the JLS website (jlsyracuse.org) and through all of our social media outlets. The Sustainers kicked-off the new year with a great golf tournament and dinner (see article below). This is always a highlight for the group! A special THANK YOU to Susan Cronin, Anne Miller, and Jeanne Jackson for once again organizing a fun and greatly anticipated event!

Our first Lunch and Learn will be held in the Ballroom of the JLS office on October 29th from 12 – 1:30 pm. Todd Bunnenberg of the US Department of Homeland Security will be speaking on Human Trafficking (HT), the JLS’s new focus area. We are currently working to raise awareness and train our members about the realities of HT in the CNY community and the resources available for victims.

The statistics are startling and I hope you will join us for this educational and revealing discussion. An invitation will be arriving by mail.

We hope Sustainers will signup for a shift and sell tickets for the Holiday Shoppes. Don’t forget about the ticket-selling contest! Any member, Active or Sustainer, who sells 10 tickets at $5.00 per ticket can attend the Holiday party for free, and the 3 Active and 3 Sustainer members who sell the most tickets (minimum of 30) at $5.00 per ticket will receive complimentary dues for the 2014 – 2015 year.

Sheila Corbishley has the Annual PieMaking Event organized for December 7th (see her article). Thank you again Sheila for your dedication! We now have a budget for

this event so there will be no fee for members. Many hands make light work so join us for pie-making as we get in the holiday spirit.

Please be thinking about nominating a Sustainer for this year’s Mary Harriman Award.

After many years of hosting the Sustainer dinner and optional golf, in late September, it never loses its popularity. Luckily, after a location change to Drumlins Golf and Country Club, about five years ago, it has become the perfect venue – centrally located with easy access for all, a beautiful golf course for the golf participants and the “member’s lounge” is an inviting and comfortable setting for Sustainers.

This year we had five teams participating in 9-hole golf. The day was quite chilly, so kudos to those who braved the low temperatures despite the bright sunshine.

But many Sustainers don’t golf and instead come for just the cocktails and dinner.

They look forward to connecting with League Members whom they don’t have an opportunity to see often. Our cocktail hour in the bar starts off a fun-filled evening for all. We then move to the “Member’s Lounge” for dinner and look forward to the ever popular choice of three dinner salads followed by brownies

and ice cream for dessert! In addition to dinner, we enjoy and appreciate the Active League Members who come and present a short program during our meal. We learn about current League activities, the upcoming Holiday Shoppes fundraiser and where Sustainer volunteers are needed. It’s a great opportunity for our Sustainer Co-Chairs to introduce Sustainer activities that are in the planning stages for the upcoming year.

We will look forward to seeing our “regular” Sustainers come back next year, as well as welcome new ones.

Our first New Member Class in October taught the New Members everything they ever wanted to know about the Junior League. In November we will be heading to the Holiday Shoppes to tour the area, meet

We expect to have a New Member Class of 25 lovely ladies and are super excited to expand the League!

The JLS Book Club is in full swing! In October we met to discuss our first book “Sold”

by Patricia McCormick, a fictional book on the topic of Human Trafficking. We had a lot of fun and exchanged great dialogue about the book as well as how it pertained to our advocacy campaign on Human Trafficking.

Spring 2013 New Member Class Project

Our next book is “The Book Thief” by Markus Zuzak. We will meet to delve into discussion and hang out, on Thursday, November 7 at 6 pm at Jenny Jackson’s house.

Those who attend are also encouraged to bring ideas for the next book selection.

The Book Club will also be looking into organizing a movie night to see “The Book Thief” coming to theaters on November 15.

Career Day Presentations at Jamesville-Dewitt High School

The Spring 2013 New Member Class had a wonderful time planning and executing their class project. Heather Connell, Whitney Daniels, Kristen Franklin, Marie Norkett, and Lauren Zacher put together a “Career Day” event for a small group of students at Jamesville-Dewitt High School.

The students all speak English as a second language, some of them coming from lower income households, and are part of a special transitions program developed by the school.

During the Career Day event, we each gave short presentations about our career field, what we do, and the educational trail we took to get where we are. Our goal was to encourage the students to start thinking about their future and expose them to a few of the

many possible career paths. At the end of the presentation we passed out “goodie bags” which included various school supplies and health / first aid items. A big THANK YOU to all the members who donated bandages for our event. We think the students got a lot out of hearing us speak and were thrilled about the goodies bags. The school very much appreciated our efforts and suggested a possible follow-up event in the Spring.

We’d also like to thank Peggy Howard, Jenny Jackson, and Anna O’Neil for being our guides during our transition into becoming Active Members. We are excited to be a part of the League and are looking forward to participating in many future events.

AJLI Fall Leadership Conference “Leadership Empowered” Detroit, Michigan September 19 – 21, 2013

This year’s AJLI Fall Leadership Conference took place in Detroit, Michigan. JLS Board Members Sarah Shea Dempsey and Sarah Weber had the pleasure of attending – better known in Detroit as, “The Sarahs from Syracuse!”

The Fall Conference offered a wide range of training opportunities and while we were not able to attend every one, we acquired knowledge related to our council areas in sessions including: • From Strategic to Tactical Plans: An Overview of the Tools for Effective Planning • Junior League Showcase: Successful Marketing / Communication Practices • Junior League Showcase: Successful Member Recruitment / Engagement Practices • How Profitable Are Your Fundraising Events?

From attending the sessions, we gained insight into new and different practices promoted by AJLI and offered by other Leagues – with a number of particular relevance to the JLS. The sessions highlighted the importance of aligning council goals and projects through effective planning.

They stressed that for successful marketing, the utilization of available tools and involvement of membership is essential. Accurate assessment of a League’s financial portfolio and honest evaluation of fundraising events were also key topics. Particular focus was given as well to effective analysis and development of funds, both within and outside the JLS. A valuable, and often under-utilized benefit of being a member of the JLS is the opportunity to attend AJLI conferences. From the perspectives of a member of only a few years, to one who has been a member in a number of Leagues, the training gained at the AJLI conferences, both ODI and Leadership, is invaluable to effectively serve in current and future po-

sitions within the JLS. These conferences give members the opportunity to experience the international organization and its capabilities as a whole. We strongly encourage all interested members at any point in their JLS careers to discuss training opportunities with their advisor. We would be more than happy to talk with any League member about our experiences and support of training opportunities.

Phase I Paperwork As Junior League Placement Chair, I want to remind membership that along with the Nominating Committee, placement is an excellent resource to help you determine the placement choices that best suit your interests and needs.

As an active member, you are asked to fulfill your placement requirements by serving in a leadership role or on a Council Committee. You will be asked in November to complete the Phase I Placement form for the following League year. Phase I forms are to be returned to your NOMINATING ADVISOR by December 1st. The nominating committee will then begin the slating process to build our 2014 – 2015 leadership team.

Your volunteer placement within the JLS is what guarantees our success. Each placement offers a unique way to tailor each member’s interests in order to meet the needs of our community and at the same time support our organization’s mission. The right placement should provide opportunities that will utilize each member’s strengths and talents to “develop the potential of women,” where one can make new friends, learn new skills, and

Meeting Briefs October GMM: • A presentation about the importance of internet safety was given by John Duncan, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York. Through his work prosecuting federal criminal cases, John has learned the unfortunate reality that the internet is a playground for sexual predators and there is a proliferation of child pornography and sex trafficking online.

• John stated that the JL is a well-respected organization and is on “good footing” to use the media to promote its message. Ideas include: (1) Appoint appropriate spokesperson to interact with media / build relationships with local media professionals; (2) Decide what to say and present focused message and use statistics whenever possible; (3) Select an issue that will resonate with the community and explain why we are concerned; (4) Define our audience and target our communication accordingly; (5) Create printed materials and send focused press releases to key contacts; (6) Have event(s) with speaker and invite the media to attend; (7) Revisit our media strategy periodically, keeping in mind our message needs to be repeated to have the most impact.

The event was well received and we hope to have another STEM event this school year.

October Board Meeting: • Momentum is building for the Anti Human Trafficking (HT) campaign. Another great speaker is lined up for the Nov. GMM. An action plan detailing next steps, and how members can get involved, is in the works and will be shared in Nov. The Community Council will be weaving education/advocacy about HT into future events.

• Good turnout is expected for the Oct. 29 Sustainer Lunch and Learn. Agent Todd Bunnenberg (Sept.

GMM speaker) will educate Sustainers about HT. Keeping Sustainers engaged in activities of active membership is important and the board brainstormed ideas for bringing all members together this year.

• A document detailing member requirements will be mailed to all active members this month.

• Final preparations are being made for Holiday Shoppes.

• The annual audit of the league’s financial statements was successfully completed, with a good report card from the independent auditing firm.

• The board will be reviewing descriptions of all leadership positions, updating as needed, and streamlining where appropriate.

• In lieu of sectionals this year, members will have the opportunity to uncover their talents by participating in “StrengthsQuest” training in February. Watch for details!
