FROM THE EDITOR

Happy 2025!!! I hope your holiday season was everything you wanted and needed—including precious memories, delicious food, and joy infused into each one. January is special because it brings about a life reset for the new year. You have a chance to reflect on the changes you want to bring forward in the new year. One of my favorite holidays has started in our community—none other than Mardi Gras. Just like the krewes are prepping for balls and parades, our League events are on the way as well.
This winter issue will give you a reflection of our past events and set the stage for excitement for future ones. Reading this issue, you shall see the success of our community projects like Red Apron Pantry, Artist for a Day, and Pumpkin Patch. Also, you will get some amazing information and reminders to save dates for upcoming events, like Designer Bag Bingo. Most importantly, you will find ways on how to get involved financially, like sponsorships and support for our many fellow League-owned businesses in the area.
2025 has a lot to bring this year and I cannot wait to see it all unfold for us. Let’s make sure to keep this excitement throughout the whole year. Set a goal for growth, connection, and fellowship with each other. Together we can make this League year the most memorable. Oh, I almost forgot . . . Laissez les bon temps rouler, y’all!!!

LETTER FROM THE President
With the beginning of a new year, I find myself excitedly reflecting on the end of 2024. The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier had an incredibly successful fall, marked by two fundraisers and the launch of our community projects. Pepsi sales at the Red River Revel reached an all-time high, thanks to the outstanding leadership of our Pepsi Chairs, Jessica Morgan and Sarah-Beth Bump. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our members who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at the Pepsi booths during the event.
We also provided the community with a wonderful family-friendly experience at our JLSB Pumpkin Patch, held at Providence Community. This fundraiser continues to be a favorite in the Shreveport-Bossier community, attracting people from all over who come to buy pumpkins and support our League.
Our community projects were also in full swing this fall. MAGIC and the Red Apron Pantry, our yearlong community initiatives, gained momentum, and we were thrilled to bring Artist for a Day to the Red River Revel. For seven days, children enjoyed free art projects in the Children’s Area, a longstanding and cherished community project of JLSB. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the incredible leadership and volunteerism of our members.
One of the largest pillars of support for JLSB is our group of Sustainers. This issue highlights the invaluable role they play in our League, and I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for their enduring contributions. I can still remember being a young JLSB member and feeling as though my time as a Sustainer was a distant milestone. As I near the end of my active service in JLSB, I now fully appreciate how the relationships we build as active members carry over into our years as Sustainers.
Throughout my time in the League, I’ve had the privilege of working with many Sustainers and have always looked forward to their advice, encouragement, and wisdom. Women like Toni Thompson, Peggy Murphy, Jodi Penn Reeves, Melanie Peacock, Vickie Meadows, Jerri Bowen, and Petty Henderson—to name just a few—have profoundly impacted
Alex Person

my JLSB journey. These women, along with many others, have continued to support the League well beyond their active years, often volunteering their time to advocate for our mission.
This past year, I was especially reminded of how vital our Sustainers are. I had the opportunity to call on women I once served alongside as active members, and they didn’t hesitate to step up in a time of need. Ginny Lamb, Sarah Giglio, Saige Solomon, Heather Courtney, Allison Murray, Anna Priestly, Maggie Pressly, and so many others answered the call, demonstrating the unwavering dedication that defines JLSB.
The mission of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier extends far beyond our active years. The lessons we learn during our time in the League continue to shape us as we serve our community in other capacities. Each year, we honor a Sustainer of the Year at a special luncheon. This event is my favorite of the year because it embodies the heart of JLSB. The room is filled with the women who started our League, advocated for its mission, and paved the way for us to serve today. The atmosphere is always one of love, laughter, and shared memories, as Sustainers reminisce about their time as active members. It’s a true celebration of what has been achieved, what is currently being accomplished, and the exciting future of how JLSB will continue to serve the Shreveport-Bossier community.
There are not enough words to adequately thank ALL of our Sustainers for the time they sacrificed during their active years and for their continued support of our League in so many ways. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am beyond excited to join this incredible group of women in just a few short months.

We are thrilled to announce that Jodi Penn Rives has been selected as the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Sustainer of the Year. Sustainers of the Year are women with exceptional leadership qualities who continue to use their skills and training as members of the Junior League to serve their community. Her work with numerous non-profit organizations in ShreveportBossier and Oxford, Mississippi, has positively impacted both communities. She continually serves as a role model, advocate, and mentor.
As one of the Sustainers who nominated her perfectly wrote, “Throughout her volunteer career, she has made a meaningful impact on the lives of many women and individuals in our community. She is a leader and a go-getter who ensures each person feels valued and heard.” The communities that Jodi calls “home” will continue to reap the benefits of her talents and expertise.
From the time she was a Provisional in 1992 until her term as President in 2004, Jodi has consistently demonstrated her willingness to serve in any capacity. While an Active member of the League, Jodi held various roles, including Provisional Chair, Ways and Means Chair, Community Vice President, Bargain Haul Chair, Advisor, and Spring Market Preview Gala Chair. As a Sustainer, she has served as the President’s Sustainer Advisor on three occasions, making a significant contribution to the League during those times.
Jodi’s dedication to the Junior League extended beyond JLSB; she served on the Association of Junior Leagues International board of directors from April 2012 to May 2015. She held the position of Director of the Board and was also a member of the Finance and Audit Committee. Additionally, she chaired the Issue Based Collective Action Committees. As a member of JLSB, her presence on the AJLI board increased visibility for our League and made a significant impact on the AJLI Board. The connections and friendships she formed at AJLI became invaluable resources for our League.
Jodi’s family has always been a big part of her volunteerism as well. They joined her at the League office when she fulfilled her placement duties and cheered her on in her many volunteer roles. Jodi’s late husband, Mike Penn, continually supported her until he passed away in 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. He even was honored with the President’s Award for his support of the JLSB. Her daughters, Taylor and Sarah Bracy, are her faithful cheerleaders, always supporting her volunteer and work efforts. Jodi is an incredible role model and has passed down her servant’s heart to them, as they serve their own communities.
Jodi’s commitment to the community is evident through her service outside of the League as well. She has served on
Vickie Meadows

numerous committees and nonprofit organizations, including serving as Chairman of the Life Savers Gala and Treasurer of the Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors. Jodi has always been active in her children’s schools, where she served as Treasurer and a Board member. She is an active and contributing member of the Shreveport Garden Study Club. Additionally, she was a board member of Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and volunteers for fundraising at the Palmer Home for Children in Oxford, Mississippi, where she and her husband, Claude, have a home.
We will celebrate Jodi at our Annual Sustainer Luncheon on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at East Ridge Country Club. Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased by calling the League office. If you have any questions, please email Vickie Meadows at vmeadows59@comcast.net or call the League office at 318.221.6144.

This winter we got the chance to spend some time with our amazing Sustainers. These women represent a large group of our membership who contributed to building the League as Active members as well as supporting the League as Sustainers. It was a joy to watch these women reminisce over their time in the League. Here is a snapshot of their impact and connections in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.

SUSTAINERS OF THE YEAR
Back Row: Vickie Meadows, Ginny Murphy
Front Row: Jodi Penn Rives, Betty Henderson
Awarding the Sustainer of the Year is a long-standing tradition in the Junior League. The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier has been presenting the award since the 1970-1971 League year. This award celebrates a Sustaining member who continues to epitomize the League’s mission after leaving Active Membership. Vickie Meadows (2017-2018), Ginny Murphy (2023-2024), Jodi Penn Rives (2024-2025) and Betty Henderson (2012-2013) are just a few of our League’s outstanding Sustainer of the Year Award winners.
MOST YEARS/LEAST YEARS
Betty Henderson, Sarah Giglio
Betty Henderson joined the Junior League in 1979 and became a Sustainer in 1994.
“It is always an honor to be counted among the League Sustainers. We have all worked in some way to make our community a better place to live, work, and play. I learned so much during my years in the League and those experiences have definitely taught me skills that have carried over in my life today. It is fun comparing fun as well as not-so-fun experiences!”
Sarah Giglio joined the Junior League in 2015 and became a Sustainer in 2022.
“It’s very humbling to be included among this group of outstanding women. Every one of these Sustainers, and many more, have contributed not only to the League, but also have done much more in our community, and it is a privilege to be counted among them. Many of them also encouraged and supported me along my journey as President, and for that I am very grateful.”

DAUGHTERS IN THE LEAGUE
Peggy Murphy, Toni Thompson, Jodi Penn Rives
The impact of a Sustainer can go far beyond her years investing in the League. Her dedication to the League’s mission was observed by her daughter, who has followed in her footsteps by joining Junior League chapters in their place of residence. Peggy Murphy’s daughter, Carolyn Murphy, is a member of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Toni Thompson’s daughter, Lillie Thompson, is a member of the Junior League of Washington, DC. Jodi Penn Rives’ daughters are both members of the League. Taylor Johnson is a member of the Junior League of Charlotte and Sara Bracy Penn is a member of the New York Junior League.
MOTHERS IN THE LEAGUE
Maura Pugh, Betty Henderson, Ginny Murphy
These Sustainers carried on the legacy of their mothers through joining the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Ginny’s mother, Virginia Sands Barnwell, was a proud member of the Junior League of Charleston, South Carolina, and her mother-in-law, Imogene Whyte Murphy, was a member of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Betty Henderson’s mother, Martha Roddey Heuer, joined the Junior Service League (before it was associated with National) in Monroe, Louisiana. She moved to Shreveport and as a Sustainer through the JLSB, she especially loved the Sustainer Book Club. Maura Pugh’s mother, Betty-Lane Shipp Querbes Kayser, was a member of the Shreveport Junior League until her passing at 80 years old. She was President from 1971-1972. Maura shared, “I remember she stayed Active after her year as President because the League was putting on the Follies, and Mama didn’t want to leave them in a lurch.”

A long-standing tradition in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is the Follies. During their Active membership, Peggy, Jodi, Toni, and Maura all participated in the beloved League event.

JERI BOWEN
Favorite Memory: I have so many memories! The friendships made, reading to the children, the trainings, serving on the Board, and learning so much about our community! My favorite placement was being an Advisor. That old saying is so true: “You get out of it by what you put in it!”

SARAH GIGLIO
Favorite Memory: I have SO many amazing League memories. Most of them are just meeting many of my best friends. Traveling for conferences is always fun, but also I think seeing Super Safety Saturday come together my first Active year was one of my favorite things because that was my first year to really be a part of a placement, and watching almost a thousand people participate in this event that we put together was just incredible.
BETTY HENDERSON
Favorite Memory: I enjoyed being President and being a part of such a fabulous group of ladies who cared about the League and this community. I loved working with the REVEL, and I served as children’s area chairman. At that time, we blew up enormous, colored weather balloons and released them with the children’s fun art. Huge crowds would gather and watch it sail away.

VICKIE MEADOWS
Favorite Memory: So many—from Bargain Hall to Spring Market, to seeing new members taking vital roles in JLSB. It was a wonderful experience for me with one added perk—new friendships for life!

GINNY MURPHY
Favorite Placement: My favorite inLeague placement was Nominating. It was probably my only in-League placement, but I loved that the committee was made up of two different age groups. The first time I was in the younger group, I still remember who was in the older group. The second time around, I was older, and I got to know several younger members. I remain friends with several wonderful people I got to know during nominating and I still smile when I recall some of those memories. My favorite community placement was The Lighthouse. I loved the children we worked with and felt like we were truly making a difference in their lives.

PEGGY MURPHY
Favorite Memory: While I have so many, my favorite League memories surround the fundraisers or projects where the entire League participated. Bargain Haul and the Trends and Traditions Spring Market allowed us to work together as a team. What a great way to meet all members and make new friends! I might not have had the opportunity to meet these fine women otherwise during my tenure in the League.

MAURA PUGH
Joined: 1981 (the last year of secret invitations, Lafayette League) | Sustainer: 1998
Favorite Memory: I have so many memories from my Active years—many so happy and fun, and some shocking. I loved being editor of the Parishscope Working on the Follies was always fun! And so was Bargain Haul at the Hirsch Coliseum and the camaraderie the League members as whole shared while all working together to put together the Bargain Haul! Who among us will ever forget the loudspeaker saying, “Ladies, find a spot on top of furniture or in the bleachers now! We will open the door in 2 minutes!” Those doors would open and seas of people would roll under the doors as they rolled up running to capture the treasures available. And then I remember working on the layout of the commemorative magazine for the Rose Classic 2003 when Joanne Ramsey walked into our workroom and told us that the Spaceship Columbia had just exploded. It was inconceivable and unbelievable.

JODI PENN RIVES
Favorite Memory: There are so many . . . Bargain Haul, Follies, the Revel. I loved when the League had projects or fundraisers that brought all the members together. We felt the power of association, and we knew that what we were doing would benefit our community. Lasting friendships were made, and the skills developed made me a better person.

TONI THOMPSON
Favorite Memory: I have wonderful memories of my time in the League. What I enjoyed the most were the events we did as a whole membership: Revel Coke, which later became Revel Pepsi; Bargain Haul; Follies; and the very first meeting of the League year, which was always a nice dinner filled with fellowship, laughing, and the excitement of starting the year!
RED APRON Pantry
On the third Thursday of every month, you can find 10-15 Junior League Members in Suite D of the office on Line Avenue. If you were to drop by, you would see the smiling faces of our members who are excited to have an opportunity to serve our community.
Red Apron Pantry is a staple of the Highland community. The guests whom we serve monthly come to know us and we know them. From the stories of the neighborhood cat that had kittens in the backyard shed to the harder stories about the struggles of working as a single mom or being a senior with no support and no understanding of how to get needed support.
Red Apron Pantry on average sees about 25 families and serves over 1,000 pounds of food every month. Customer favorites include peanut butter, canned beef, mac and cheese, apple sauce, and of course dog and cat food for all our furry family members.

You can help Red Apron Food Pantry continue to grow! In the months to come we are excited to offer more items like toiletries, feminine products, laundry detergent, and more household items that are not available from the food bank. With meetings with a purpose and general donations from our community we can continue to offer more to our guests. Red Apron Pantry is a resource to our community and one that is beloved. Red Apron is more than a food pantry. We are a place where members who volunteer are fulfilled and recognized by our guests. We come to be their constant. If you are considering volunteering or making this your placement, you won’t be disappointed.

Update
Spring is just around the corner, and the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier will soon be welcoming 27 more exceptional ladies as Active members. Each of us can remember the busyness of our Provisional year and extra obligations. This group of women has exceeded expectations in completing requirements.
This League year’s Provisional class had many opportunities to learn more about the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier and all it has to offer our community. The first part of the Provisional classes’ League year has been dedicated to the history of the League and its current placement opportunities. Provisionals have heard from Head Volunteers from many of JLSB’s community placements.
November’s meeting gave Provisional members two opportunities for a more intimate look at our League and its members. First, Provisionals joined our GMM, giving them the chance to meet Active members in a smaller group setting while giving and receiving feedback on JLSB’s strengths and weaknesses. November’s PMM was hosted by Peggy Murphy, Sustainer and past President, and Carolyn Murphy, Secretary. Provisionals had the unique opportunity to learn about JLSB, past, present, and future,

Lindey Smith

from two generations of League Ladies.
Provisional members are shining bright during their Community Placement obligations and Fund Development shifts. These women have become accustomed to serving our community with a smile and a happy heart. I often receive praise reports on Provisional members’ eagerness to serve.
Provisionals have served Red River Revel Pepsi and Pumpkin Patch Fund Development shifts. They have also observed many of the League’s Community Placements, including Red Apron Pantry, MAGIC, and Artist for a Day. Several Provisionals have attended a Board meeting to observe the inner workings of the League. Provisionals’ knowledge of the League continues through attending monthly General Member Meetings and Provisional Member Meetings.
Going into the second half of the League year, Provisionals will begin to focus on their plans for their own League career. In January, Provisionals met with their advisor and Provisional group to begin thinking about their goals within the League. In February, Provisionals will have Cocktails with the Board. Provisionals will also have individual meetings with their Provisional Advisors for their annual interview. March’s meeting will be dedicated to a placement party to help Provisionals rank their placement preferences.
The 2024-2025 Provisional Year is nearly over. We are only months away from welcoming 27 amazing ladies into the League as Active Members. This Provisional class will be a great asset to our League and community, and I look forward to seeing all of the things they accomplish during their League career.

LETTER FROM THE PlacementChair
Jessica Latin

Dear JLSB Members,
As we step into 2025, I am thrilled to welcome you to another year of growth, service, and leadership within the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. The placement process offers you an exciting opportunity to reflect on your personal strengths, identify areas for growth, and strategically plan your League journey.
Placement is not just about finding a role—it’s about matching your unique skills and goals with the needs of our League and community. Whether you wish to refine existing talents or take on a new challenge, there’s a placement that aligns with your aspirations. Take the time to evaluate your personal and professional goals, as well as how your chosen placement can contribute to achieving them.
If you envision holding a leadership position in the future, it’s essential to plan your journey intentionally. Explore roles that build the skills needed for positions like Head Volunteer or even Board roles. The “Planning Your JLSB Career” document on Digital Cheetah is a valuable resource for identifying your path. Use it to understand the skills required for higher positions and take proactive steps toward achieving them.
Clear communication with your Advisor and other League members is vital. Share your ambitions, needs, and any challenges that might affect your placement. If you’re interested in being nominated for a slated position, it’s important to articulate this early and work collaboratively with your Advisor to demonstrate your leadership potential.
The Placement Handbook is your guide to exploring the various in-League and community roles available. It details
the skills developed, required commitments, and timeframes for each placement. From short-term commitments like Artist for a Day to year-long roles such as Red Apron Pantry, there’s a placement to fit your schedule and interests. Review the handbook on the Digital Cheetah homepage under the “Resources” tab for a comprehensive overview.
Following the January Advisor meetings and slating process, the online placement process will take place March 11-March 21. Provisional members will have their placement party March 18 during their regular Provisional meeting. Members will rank their top four placement choices, keeping in mind that only two choices can be from the same committee. Please ensure your rankings reflect genuine interest, as placements are made based on preferences, qualifications, and League needs.
The JLSB thrives because of the dedication, talents, and passions of its members. By thoughtfully selecting a placement, you contribute to the success of our mission while furthering your personal and professional growth. If you have any questions or need guidance, please don’t hesitate to contact your Advisor or reach out to me directly.
Let’s make 2025 a year of impact, learning, and camaraderie. I look forward to seeing how each of you grows within the League and serves our community.
Warm regards,
Jessica Latin

NEWS FROM THE NOMINATING Committee
Angela Hamilton

THE 2024-2025 NOMINATING COMMITTEE IS PROUD TO SERVE THE JLSB MEMBERS AS ADVISORS AND TO CREATE THE SLATE FOR THE LEAGUE’S FUTURE.
At the beginning of the year, we needed to place the Provisional Assistant Chair. Grace Nickels agreed to serve in the position for this League year and move into the Provisional Chair role next year. We also needed to place the Assistant Treasurer. Amy Trammel agreed to serve in the position for this League year and move into the Treasurer role next year.
In September, we opened applications and nominations for President-Elect-Elect. After serious thought and consideration, we were pleased to announce our selection of Stacey Melerine that was voted upon and passed at Small Group Meetings in November.

Stacey Melerine will assume the role of President-Elect-Elect for the rest of the 2024-2025 year. Stacey will become President-Elect in the 20252026 League year, and President during the 2026-2027 term.
Stacey has been a member of the League for 13 years. Stacey has served as a leader on each of the League’s four councils. Currently, she is serving as the Member Engagement Chair. In the past she served as Secretary, Member at Large, Community Vice President, Red Apron Pantry Head Volunteer, Fund Development Research and Development Chairman, Winter Wonderland Co-Chairman, and JL Market Co-Chairman. Stacey’s favorite League memory is transitioning the Red Apron Pantry to its client’s choice model.
Stacey works as Senior Counsel and Government Relations Liaison at Travelers Insurance. She is very passionate about her work as Vice President of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and is proud to implement policy that has helped our state lead the nation in student reading and math growth. Outside of the Junior League, Stacey serves on the Louisiana State Bar Associa-
tion House of Delegates, LSBA Barristers for Board Committee, and on the Board of the Louisiana School for Math Science and the Arts.
Stacey is married to Michael Melerine and they have three children: Foster, age five, and two-year-old twins, Ella and Camille. Stacey and Michael live in Shreveport and attend St. Mark’s Cathedral.
Did you know the JLSB offers 20 positions that are slated by the Nominating Committee? These positions include Revel Chairs, Design Bag Bingo Assistant Chair, Nominating Advisors, Provisional Advisors, all four Council Assistant Vice Presidents and many more. These positions offer members the opportunity to lead and serve on various committees that shape the League year. Every position in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is an excellent way for our members to develop skills in leadership, communition, and teamwork, and are an opportunity to learn more about themselves as they fulfill their roles. In the JLSB, a leader has passion, dedication, is a team player, and is willing to accept help from other members. Many of these roles provide the chance to sit in an assistant role in what we call “two year, move up positions.” This gives members a chance to learn and shadow the position for a year, while working on the committee before rising to the challenge of a Chair position. Do you have what it takes to be a leader in the JLSB? If you have any questions about the nominating process, please reach out to me or your advisor and we’ll be happy to talk to you.
Provenance PUMPKIN PATCH AT
Although it feels like spring, we are still celebrating the success of The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Pumpkin Patch at Provenance. The Pumpkin Patch brought families and friends together, creating a festive atmosphere filled with laughter, joy, and the vibrant colors of the fall. Each pumpkin purchased not only added to the beautiful displays of your homes, but also contributed to our mission of empowering women and children through our community programs.
We would like to acknowledge the local businesses and sponsors for their unwavering support and contributions. Your involvement enhances our efforts and helps us create meaningful experiences in our community. Thank you to Provenance Neighborhood; Nerren Law; Gilmer & Giglio Criminal Defense & Personal Injury Attorneys; Red River Bank; Alonzo P. Jackson, Jr., Attorney at Law; Billy B’s Cajun Grill; Cypress Point Nursing & Rehabilitation Center; and Haulz It All.

Emerie Holtzclaw

To our Pumpkin Patch Committee and countless volunteers, thank you for dedicating your time and energy in making this event possible. Your hard work behind the scenes, from setting up the Patch to assisting visitors, did not go unnoticed. It is definitely a team effort and embodies a sense of community spirit that reflects the essence of the Junior League.
As we reflect on this successful season, we look forward to future events that continue to bring us together. Together, we are making a difference and cultivating a stronger community. Thank you once again for your support and we can’t wait to see you next year at the Pumpkin Patch!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION AND VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Many people start January with a “new year, new me” philosophy with the intention of eating healthier, working out, using their mind more, or some other resolutions. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ll raise my hand and say that I’ve made many resolutions over the years that I have not kept. However, one that we can all make is to do something that’s not just good for ourselves, but that can be beneficial to others as well.
If you ask any member of a Junior League why they joined the League, they will usually say “to make new friends ” or “to help others.” I personally joined for both reasons. I’ve loved meeting new people and helping the ShreveportBossier community. JLSB members have worked hard this year in many placements, and it is now time to recognize those volunteer hours.
Throughout the year, members are nominated as Leading Ladies for a variety of reasons. These ladies have gone above and beyond in their placement and by helping out whenever and wherever they are needed. As we move into 2025, we will begin to take nominations for our Volunteer of the Year. This JLSB member is chosen by a committee based upon being a Leading Lady for the 2024-2025 League year, and certain qualifications:
NOMINATIONS
Submit nominations to Member Vice President Courtney McBee at courtney.mcbee@bossierschools.org or by filling out the nomination form on Digital Cheetah.
Nominations are due April 15, 2025
❏ Has been nominated at least once for Leading Lady
❏ Is an Active member in good standing
❏ Possesses outstanding performance visibility within the League (of secondary and less importance is her involvement in and commitment to organizations outside of the League)
❏ Demonstrates the principles espoused in JLSB’s mission and vision statement and whose spirit and nature reflect a positive image of JLSB
❏ Exceeds the expectations of general membership with unsurpassed interest in voluntarism and a commitment to community service.
The application for Volunteer of the Year will be live on Digital Cheetah, with forms being due on April 15, 2025. Or you are welcome to email me at courtney.mcbee@bossierschools.org. The winner will be announced at the May Endof-Year Dinner, so please make plans to attend as we not only celebrate this member, but also our new Actives, new Sustainers, scholarship recipients, and other awards.

ARTIST FOR A
Day
In a world that often feels fast-paced and hurried, art invites us to pause and reflect. It provides a space for contemplation, a reminder that beauty and meaning can be found even in the most unexpected places. In a little tent, not far from the train tracks in downtown Shreveport, was just that space for young would-be artists to put their expression center stage.
In our digital age, the ways we create, share, and experience art are evolving. Technology has expanded the horizons of artistic expression, making art more accessible than ever. Yet, the core essence of art remains unchanged: it is a celebration of creativity and a testament to the boundless imagination of the human spirit. Going back to the basics, with a nod to nostalgia, Artist For A Day hopped on the way back machine to explore some of our favorite child authors and books. Here is a brief recap of our time.
For nine days, young creators and enthusiasts created art utilizing various mediums. Whether it’s the strokes of the paint sticks, the texture of the clay, the shading of the chalk, or movement of the pipe cleaners, over 1200 unique pieces were created during that time.

Quaya Ervin

We opened the Red Revel with Goggles, written by Ezra Jack Keats. Artists created their very own pair of goggles utilizing pipe cleaners. The pipe cleaners were then twisted and pulled every which way until they resembled a very fine pair of goggles.
One of our all-time favorites is the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Erik Carle. Young artists created their very own butterflies using coffee filters, food coloring, and beads. It was a “colorful” evening as the artists’ fingers turned every shade of the rainbow.
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, written by Laura Numeroff, led us to a great craft with beads for sprinkles and clay for the cookie. Such simple supplies for such intricate “cookies.”
The Rainbow Fish is a popular book written by Marcus Pfister and was one of the most popular crafts for the Red River Revel. Artists made a fish by drawing their own hand and using their imagination to fill in the rest. With the red puckered lips and colorful fish scales, the creativity was flowing from both young artists and adults.
Lastly, A Handful of Buttons written by early childhood educator, author, and illustrator Carmen Luque, celebrates individualism. Artists made their own buttons by first creating a unique design and then pressing the design on a button machine. This was a Revel favorite for sure and a wonderful keepsake for their time spent there.
As we close out this season of Artist For A Day, let’s continue to celebrate art in all its forms and encourage its growth for future generations. After all, the world is our canvas, and the possibilities are endless.

LETTER FROM THE Secretary
“Don’t you just love New Year’s? You get to start all over. Everybody gets a second chance.” How fitting to begin 2025 with a little encouragement from the cinematic masterpiece, Forrest Gump. We reflect fondly on the first half of this service year with the JLSB. The time, energy, thoughtful strategy, and hard-earned execution of community projects and fundraisers by our Active and Provisional volunteers continues to build upon the strong foundation established by our Sustainer population. Whether your placement finds you on the front lines of aiding those in our community or behind the scenes turning the gears that make our organization tick, our desire for a better Shreveport-Bossier, one red apron at a time, remains the same. I hope your holiday celebrations with family and friends reignited a passion for your continued commitment to the JLSB. As we turn the page and greet the infinite possibilities that lie ahead, let’s do a pulse check on our commitments as members. Successful completion of our current year is comprised of five pillars.
Our physicians are dedicated to Improving Quality of Life

Carolyn Murphy

First, and most importantly, an Active member must complete her placement. Whether you are serving in a concentrated or yearlong project, you have been actively meeting with your placement team and are working to meet the mission of the JLSB through expected volunteer hours.
Next, Active and Provisional attendance at five General Membership Meetings (GMMS) is required. Fellowship amongst members is vital for continuity of the organization as well as personal development of its volunteers. Five opportunities have been offered. However, if you have been unable to attend any of the meetings thus far, you can meet this commitment with attendance at the following upcoming meetings: February 11 at LSUS, March 11 at Christus Highland Medical Center, April 8 at the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, and May 13 for our Annual Dinner Meeting at the Petroleum Club of Shreveport. Please note that the April meeting will serve as a double credit meeting. As a rule of thumb, General Membership Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month.
Fund Development is the pillar of our organization which enables us to financially support our community projects. Actives and Provisionals must complete two shifts at our Fund Development events. The fall provided us fulfillment opportunities via Pepsi slinging at the Red River Revel or falling for autumn at the Pumpkin Patch in Provenance. In April, our Designer Bag Bingo event will provide a third and final opportunity to obtain Fund Development credit. In addition to volunteering at Fund Development events, members also pay a Fund Development financial commitment. Provisionals purchased cookbooks to meet this component while Actives can purchase pumpkins, Designer Bag Bingo tickets or sponsorships, or join the 1933 Society.
Lastly, membership dues are paid by Actives, Provisionals, and Sustainers. These must be submitted by February 15. You can provide payment on the website or visit our headquarters and pay in person. Digital Cheetah is the best avenue to remain current on your commitments in membership. Should you have any questions or believe an error has occurred, please contact me at cmurphy@fsbcarthage.com.
As you embark upon this next chapter of your JLSB journey, remind yourself why you joined and ask yourself how you will pay it forward. There is no time like the present to begin anew. I look forward to serving alongside each of you as we thrive in 2025!
Give for Good
Do you have any plans for May 6th yet? If not, allow me to suggest one thing to add to your calendar: Give for Good!
Each May, thousands of people in the community and beyond come together to donate their time and money during the 24-hour giving challenge known as Give for Good. This event consistently demonstrates that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a significant impact.
Give for Good is an initiative hosted by the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, aimed at expanding local philanthropic support and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the Northwest Louisiana area. Since its inception in 2014, Give for Good has raised over $20 million for local nonprofits. In 2024, 222 organizations benefited from the more than $2.94 million raised through over 9,000 contributions. The impact of these funds is truly immeasurable.
The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier actively participates in Give for Good and, in partnership with the Community Foundation, has invested over $250,000 into our Endowment Fund to support the future of our community and scholarships programs. We plan to continue investing an amount equal to what we receive from Give for Good into this endowment fund. Through this fund and contributions from community members, the League can fulfill its mission of serving others and fostering the spirit of voluntarism within our community.
Emory Bray

Give for Good represents the power of the individual. No amount is too small; no donation goes unnoticed. This special day allows us to support causes near and dear to us, such as education, healthcare, animal welfare, or any other number of deserving causes. Proceeds from this day stay within our community.
Not sure where to start? Here’s what you can do!
• Go to GiveforGoodNLA.org to read more about Give for Good and the nonprofit organizations that will be participating.
• Mark the date on your calendar! May 6th will be here before you know it.
• Donate: No amount is too small to make a difference.
• Spread the word: Let others know about this day and the causes you support through social media, text messages, and word of mouth.
Whether it’s the JLSB or another organization, I highly encourage you to find a cause that resonates with you. As a Tanzanian proverb states: “Little by little, a little becomes a lot.” One social media post, conversation, or donation on Give for Good can have an impact larger than any of us could imagine.

Spring will be here before you know it, and so will Designer Bag Bingo 2025! Designer Bag Bingo is Junior League of Shreveport Bossier’s largest and most popular fundraising event. Save the date for the 7th Annual Designer Bag Bingo on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino in downtown Shreveport. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for General Admission; however, most sponsors (see sponsorship levels) will have early access beginning at 5:00 p.m. The fun begins at 7:00 p.m. with 10 games of bingo and an incredible selection of raffle prizes being raffled off through-out the evening.
Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Designer Bag Bingo pairs the fun of bingo with designer handbags as each game’s prize. All ticket holders will receive dinner, a bingo game packet (10 Bingo game sheets per packet with three plays per sheet), and one red bingo dauber. Upon arrival, raffle tickets, additional bingo cards, and additional colors of daubers will be for sale. Our event will feature nine designer handbags (over $300 value per bag) and the grand prize is an authentic Louis Vuitton handbag valued at over $1,000.
In addition to the handbags, the event will feature a “Treat Yourself Raffle” of various items, including spa treatments, jewelry, purses, local art, restaurant gift cards, and more. “Treat Yourself” to these raffle tickets for only $10.00 each! A second raffle feature for the night is the $25.00 “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend Raffle” for three chances to win a beautiful jewelry piece donated by Sid Potts, and with each raffle ticket purchased, guests will receive a bright, blinking ring to add to the fun for the night.
This year we welcome back, KTAL News Anchor and JLSB Sustainer Jacque Jovic as our emcee for the night. She will be calling numbers and keeping the handbags’ descriptions lively!
After the entertaining night, don’t let the fun stop after the bingo games! Sam’s Town Casino & Hotel is offering a JLSB Designer Bag Bingo room block for the night with a special rate of $84 per room (not including taxes) for your choice of a deluxe king non-smoking or a deluxe two queen non-smoking. Don’t worry about driving home and

take the elevator up to your room from the ballroom. All room reservations may contact Sam’s Town Casino Hotel at 318.424.7777 for more information.

We are seeking new designer handbags: brands such as Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, etc., to be the winning prize for each bingo round. In addition, we are looking for donations for raffle items.
Lastly, we would like to thank our 2025 Presenting Sponsor, Morris & Dewett Injury Lawyers, for their gracious sponsorship for the night and we are looking forward to having them help us present the final handbag of the night. If you or someone you know would like to help this event come together in its final months with a sponsorship, please let us know. The overwhelming support from Active members and Sustainers in the past has played a major part in the event’s success. Whether you purchased a ticket, sponsored the event, donated a raffle item, or volunteered for the night, we appreciate you and hope we can count on your support this year! Please contact a JLSB member or our JLSB office if you would be interested in partnering with us.

Be sure to get your ticket and be there early for seats with your friends, or reserve a table for 10 to be sure you get to sit with your friends! We can’t wait to see you calling out “BINGO!” and showing off that designer handbag on your shoulder as you depart for the evening!
Best Wishes,

MARDI GRAS KING CAKE
Cake Ingredients:
½ cup warm water (110 to 115 degrees)
2 envelopes dry yeast
½ cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar
3 ½ to 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
½ cup warm milk
5 egg yolks
½ cup (1 stick) plus 2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
1 (1-inch) plastic baby doll
Poured Icing:
¾ cup confectioners’ sugar
¼ cup lemon juice
2 ¼ cups water
Purple-, yellow-, and greentinted sugars
Cookbooks
Cake Directions:
Pour the warm water in a small shallow bowl and sprinkle with the yeast and 2 tea- spoons of the sugar. Let rest for 3 minutes and then stir to mix. Let stand in a warm place for 10 minutes until the yeast bubbles. Stir the remaining sugar, 3 ½ cups of flour, the salt and nutmeg into a large mixing bowl and stir in the lemon zest. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the yeast mixture, warm milk and egg yolks to the well. Mix with a wooden spoon until smooth. Add ½ cup of the butter 1 tablespoon at a time, beat- ing well after each addition. Continue beating for 2 minutes longer or until the dough can be shaped in a medium soft ball.
Place the dough on a lightly floured sur- face and knead until the dough is no longer sticky, gradually adding up to 1 cup of the re- maining flour. Knead for 10 minutes longer or until shiny and elastic. Coat a large bowl
with 1 tablespoon of the remaining butter and place the dough in the prepared bowl, turn- ing to coat the surface. Let rise, covered with a heavy kitchen towel, in a warm palace for 1 ½ hours or until doubled in bulk. Remove the dough to a floured surface and punch the dough down. Sprinkle with the cinnamon, then pat and shape the dough into a long snake or cylinder. Form a twist by folding the long cylinder in half, end to end, and pinching the ends together. Twist the dough and shape it into a ring, pinching the ends together. Place the ring on a baking sheet coated with the remaining one tablespoon of butter. Let rise, covered with a kitchen towel, for 45 minutes or until doubled in bulk.
Brush the top and side of the cake with a mixture of the egg and one tablespoon of milk. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 35 min- utes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack and hide the plastic baby doll in the cake.
Directions:
Combine the confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice and water in a bowl and mix until of a spreading consistency, adding additional water if needed for the desired consistency. Drizzle the icing over the cake and immediately sprinkle with the tinted sugars, alternating among the three colors. Let stand until set and cut into 2- to 3-inch pieces.
