Letter From the

We hope that everyone is enjoying the year so far with the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier! We have had a busy fall and I am very thankful to all of you for your support and hard work in making our fall projects and fundraisers successful. We had a great turnout at Super Safety Saturday and we were able to teach many kids about health and safety issues and show them some fun with our Toucha Truck. We kicked off October with the Revel and were fortunate to have great weather! We also started our new fundraiser—the Junior League Pumpkin Patch at Provenance—and it was a great month-long event for families and our volunteers. We ended October with our third annual Kitchen Tour and showcased some of the best kitchens in Shreveport all while having a fun time!

As I have worked with many of you on these projects and fundraisers, I am reminded that none of this is possible without the hard work of all of our volunteers You have all showed your commitment to our mission and particularly to promoting voluntarism. The Junior League’s mission—promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers—is a three part mission that all works together, but can still be best understood by exploring its individual parts.

So, how do you promote voluntarism? By volunteering, you not only make a difference in the lives of those you help, but you also inspire others to do the same in their lives. If we all do a little more than what is required of us to help others in need, our community and those in it will continue to improve. You can promote voluntarism by simply completing your placement and by helping others on your committee even outside of your specific placement description. If you see another member having a difficult time with her placement, lend a helping hand. If you see an area or a project where we may not have enough volunteers, offer to help. If you see a need that we should be addressing, let us know. So many of you go above and beyond your placements and for that, I am truly grateful.

Our community is truly fortunate to have some of the best nonprofits working to make our community a better place, such as Volunteers of America, Community Renewal, and Step Forward just to name a few. While the League is partnered with Mooretown Elementary, many other schools in our area are also in need of additional volunteers.

These organizations are all working tirelessly to improve the lives of children and families in our community. If you see a call for volunteers, consider getting involved and helping where you can. Be a part of the solution by promoting voluntarism, not only within our League, but also within our community.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is a holiday party that my law firm—Blanchard, Walker, O’Quin & Roberts—holds for the Volunteers of America’s McAdoo House. I once saw a request in the VOA newsletter looking for people to host holiday parties for the individuals they serve. I felt compelled to call and ask about hosting a party and asked which group could we host. I was told that the VOA had many people eager to host a children’s holiday party, but they still needed people to host a party for some of the adults that the VOA serves. The McAdoo House is a supported living program that provides a safe, decent environment for homeless adults with disabilities. When I heard about this program, I thought—yes, this is the party we want to host! That was 5 years ago and we have been hosting a party for the residents at the McAdoo House every year since. It is a simple thing that we do—we bring food and gifts; we sing songs; we play games; but most importantly, we give hugs and get to know people that we may not ordinarily meet in our daily lives. I am hopeful that we bring some holiday cheer to the residents of the McAdoo House, but I know that I receive much more than I give to them. It is always the best reminder that I have every year about the true meaning of the holidays.

As you work through the rest of the League year and look to check off obligations, remember to add promoting voluntarism to your to-do list. Look for new opportunities where you can help another League member, read to a child or throw a holiday party for a stranger. I can promise you will gain much more than you receive!

Thank you all for your continued faith in me and for being true examples of our mission! It is an honor and a privilege to serve you and I wish you and your families the very best this holiday season!

October has been a busy month for the League. Three fundraisers during the same month is not easy for any organization, but thanks to our committed group of volunteers, we were able to have members working the Revel the first week of October, the Pumpkin Patch the entire month and Kitchen Tour the last Saturday in October. As I look back and reflect on all we were able to do in October, I get excited about the many opportunities we had to interact with one another while working together.

I’m especially thankful for the Pumpkin Patch. In this inaugural year, we reached out to Sustainers for assistance in manning the event. We would not have been able to do it without your help! We really appreciate your time and effort. I was so excited to see Sustainers coming with friends, children, and spouses to work a shift at the Pumpkin Patch. I know our Actives and Provisionals were encouraged to see you as well. Sustainers not only worked at the Patch, but also came to many of our special events from story time to movie nights. It was great to see so many of you participate in this month-long League fundraiser.

We will have another opportunity to see each other in February for the Sustainer Luncheon where we will recognize the next Sustainer of the Year. I hope you can join us on Tuesday, February 21 at East Ridge Country Club.

Provisional

The year is moving along quickly for our Provisional members, with many opportunities to mark Provisional Course obligations off of to-do lists. The first core Provisional meeting was held in September at the Revel Train Depot and covered the Community and Ways & Means Councils. After a fun icebreaker, the group learned about the two councils and watched live “Member Spotlight” interviews with Ways & Means Vice President Mollie Chelette and Executive Vice President Kendra Meiki.

In October, the Provisional committee held its first Cocktails & Conversations event at Taziki’s Mediterranean Café in Shreveport. Attendees enjoyed half price drinks and appetizers, as well as appetizer samplings prepared by the eatery. Turn out for the event was great and the ladies enjoyed spending time together in a social setting. Members of the Kitchen Tour committee spoke to the group about the fundraiser and what a Kitchen Tour Ways & Means shift would entail. A second Cocktails & Conversations event was held in November at Red River Brewing in Shreveport.

Our newest members have been hard at work in the community. Some, such as volunteers for Super Safety Saturday and Artist for a Day at the Red River Revel, have already completed their mini-placement. All of the

ladies spent time at the Revel selling Pepsi or working in admissions. One of our Provisional members completed her Ways & Means shift obligation for the year after working two Revel shifts! Provisional members have had the opportunity to attend several general meetings and board meetings, and each Provisional Advisor held a fall social for her group.

Now that December is here, one of my favorite Provisional events is upon us—the Holiday Brunch! Assistant Chairman Anna Brown, along with advisors Jennifer Cameron and Tara Jones, are planning a “tacky” time for all!

We will celebrate the season together at the Coates Bluff Clubhouse with scrumptious food, lively games, and an ornament exchange. Be sure to mark your calendar - this event is always enjoyable and time well spent together.

As we head into a new year and continue to learn about the League, Provisionals can look forward to two more Cocktails & Conversations socials and a core meeting about the Communications and Membership Councils.

We will finish up the Provisional course with the popular Cocktails with the Board, where the ladies will have the opportunity to connect with our board members.

Winter Wonderland is a new event taking place at Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club on December 4, 2016 from 2-5 p.m. This Christmas-themed event will be sure to get you and your family in the Holiday Spirit. We will have visits with Santa Claus, Christmas crafts, cookie decorating, and even a little bit of Christmas shopping. Picture package options will be available with Santa by a professional photographer.

Kids will have so much fun making their crafts and enjoying snacks of donuts, milk, fruit, and our cocoa bar. We will have a few pop-up shops offering hair bows, teacher gifts, toys, and lots more! Before the kids leave they will have a chance to visit the candy bar for a sweet treat to take home from the day. Please join us for a day of Winter Wonderland fun!

Update

This year, the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is grateful to have six community leaders serving on its Community Advisory Board (CAB). The CAB operates to provide advice and counsel to our Board, as well as to promote and foster greater dialogue, education, and understanding between the League and the community. The first meeting of the CAB was held at the Junior League office in October to discuss ways to improve the League’s current community projects and explore new community projects aimed at further addressing the needs of the Shreveport-Bossier community.

The JLSB is excited to welcome a new member to our CAB this year: Reneé Ellis, is the Principal and Sheriff of Westwood Elementary. Reneé is a veteran educator who has enthusiastically led the recovery of Westwood Elementary from failing status to a recipient of the National Change and Innovation Award. Reneé has been quoted that “There are no limits when love is the focus.” Through this focus, Reneé has invigorated the students, parents and staff at Westwood, affectionately called the Westwood Ranch. Reneé has worked with the Junior League in the past when our Meeting with a Mission served to benefit Westwood. With her incredible credentials and experiences, we are pleased to

Community Assistance Program (CAP) Katie Baker

Improving Our Community Through Community Assistance Program Grants One of the missions of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is improving communities. While we accomplish this goal through our many community projects, we also improve our community through our Community Assistance Program (CAP) grants. The purpose of the CAP grant program is to provide monetary grants for short-term critical needs of non-profit organizations in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Through our CAP grants, the JLSB is able to extend its financial support further into the community by providing smaller grants, of $3,000 or less, to other non-profit organizations in our area.

Since 2005, the CAP grant program has provided over $95,000 in assistance to more than 30 non-profit organizations in our area. So far this year, the JLSB awarded CAP grants in the amount of $1,500 each to two of our fellow Junior Leagues—JL Lafayette and JL Baton

Rouge—to aid with their flood relief effort in response to the historic and devastating flooding in South Louisiana.

In the past, we have granted these funds to other Leagues when there were major natural disasters. The grants awarded to JL Lafayette and JL Baton Rouge addressed the short-term critical needs of these leagues in our larger Louisiana community. Some of the grant money will be used to replenish JL Baton Rouge Diaper Co-op.

To be considered for a CAP grant, a local non-profit should submit an application. The application can be found on our website at jlsb.org/scholarships. The Board considers each application based upon the following criteria: 1. The Agency’s proposed project must support the mission/focus of our League; 2. The Agency addresses a critical human need; 3. The Agency faces the possibility of a disruption of a program or service; 4. The Agency has prospects for continued funding after the grant; 5. The Agency has an unforeseen need not covered by its budget or present financial resources; 6. The Agency’s clients will be significantly impacted by the grant; 7. There must be a volunteer component within the Agency; 8. The project must benefit the community at large, rather than an individual.

The CAP grant program cannot be used to fund current JLSB projects, requests from individuals, funding for religious or political activities, scholarships, fundraising donations, or research. Additionally, funds may not be awarded to an organization that has received a CAP grant in the past 36 months.

The JLSB still has funds available to award through the CAP grant program this year. A Partnership with Mooretown Elementary We are definitely off to a great start at Mooretown Elementary! The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier is thrilled to return for another year of service and excitement. In August, we kicked off the school year with a welcome back breakfast for teachers. As we moved into September, Back to School night was a very well attended event. Volunteers aided faculty, staff, and teachers by greeting family and friends, selling items for the PTA, and helping with any other tasks that came up. In October, we were present on October 27 for Jump Start to Read and on October 28 for the Fall Carnival. Mooretown Elementary featured me as a guest reader for Jump Start to Read. This was a truly rewarding experience because I was able to interact with students. Both events allowed League members to participate in activities that were fun and educational for both students and League members. October also al-

lowed us to present Chancellor Gladney with several large bags of small prizes and treats. These items were used to fill the school store. Good behavior was one of the incentives that allowed students to be rewarded with a trip to the school store.

Mooretown Elementary is a special place. Through our volunteer efforts throughout the school year, League members have the opportunity to provide extra support for students and staff. There will be added volunteer opportunities as springtime approaches. Donation items will only be collected in certain months so please be sure to check League Links for any updates and/or changes. Being a part of the growth at Mooretown has truly been rewarding. Let’s continue to support our partnership at Mooretown and if there are any questions concerning any future events, please feel free to contact me.

University Health

“I have a bingo!� is a familiar phrase heard in the playroom at University Health. The kids love to see the ladies in the red aprons coming down the hallway as we invite them to play hospital bingo in the playroom.

Once a month members of the Junior League meet in the playroom to play bingo with the children being treated at University Health. The University Health Child Life Specialist takes bingo cards to the children that are too sick to join the group, and we use closed circuit television to broadcast bingo into the rooms of these children. Once the kids arrive, we draw for bingo cards and the fun begins! Everyone is excited to see who wins a bingo! The children that choose to play in their room can call the playroom to let us know they have bingo and the League members take their prize and craft to their room. After two regular games of bingo and one game of blackout bingo, the children are able to pick out a prize from our enormous prize bucket, which is always the children’s favorite part!

After the children have picked out their prize, we make a seasonal craft with the children. It gives the children something fun to take with them and they can use it to decorate their hospital room.

In the past, we have donated Christmas decorations and trees to help deck the halls of the pediatric floor. The League members have also donated Halloween and Christmas goodie bags for the children who unfortunately have to stay in the hospital during the holidays.

The one-on-one interaction between League members and the children, along with the fun games and crafts, allows the children time to have fun and not think about their illness. I know all the League members, children, and their parents look forward to the fun and laughs we share in the playroom on the third Thursday of each month. What better way to spend a Thursday night than to play bingo with the children at University Health.

Safe Sitter was the brainchild of Dr. Patricia Keener, a pediatrician in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Keener started the program as a response to a child dying while in the care of an adult babysitter. As a result, Keener felt compelled to train adolescents on how to care for younger siblings or other children. The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier began offering the program as a class in 2013 in an effort to reach out to young teens in the Shreveport-Bossier area. During this time frame, volunteers have gone through intensive training to return and train many local 11-14 year olds. During classes students are taught safety skills, childcare skills, and basic First Aid in addition to general life and business skills. Students leave the class confident in their ability to care for themselves and others.

Safe Sitter launched a revamped curriculum for this year. After completing online and in-person training, the instructors taught the first class of the year on Saturday,

September 17 to nine young ladies at the JLSB office. For a fee, the students received a day of training, a Safe Sitter kit, and became certified Safe Sitters. The new curriculum also emphasizes the important roles that parents play with new Safe Sitters. Parents are asked to be involved in helping their young teens choose babysitting jobs, practice good work habits, and how to use what they have learned to be successful sitters.

Due to requests and positive feedback, we will be offering a second paid participant class on Saturday, February 4 at the League office. The class costs $50 and includes

instruction, lunch, and materials for students. We will be partnering with Community Renewal Friendship Houses on Saturday, January 21 and Volunteers of America on Saturday, March 11 to offer free classes to students who may not have the financial resources for this type of training. The Safe Sitter class is a valuable tool for these students who are usually the primary source of afternoon, evening, and weekend care for younger siblings.

Safe Sitter has enjoyed a successful run with the League and is looking forward to expanding our class offerings and community partnerships in the future.

News from the Nominating

Jennifer LaPierre

The Nominating Committee is thrilled to announce the slating of Heather Price as President-Elect-Elect and Hilary Wooley as Executive Vice President-Elect of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. Heather will serve her term as President during the 2018-19 League year, while Hilary will serve her term as Executive Vice President during the 2017-18 League year. Both ladies bring years of experience to their roles.

Heather’s early League placements were Kids in the Kitchen, Bingo and Market, serving as Treasurer twice.

She grew up in Shreveport, but after graduating from the University of Alabama, she and her husband Marc decided to move back home. They have three beautiful children, daughter Julia (7) and sons Rand (4) and William (6 months). Heather and Marc work together in the family business, Porter’s Industrial. The service culture that her grandfather and father built for Porter’s has been instilled in her from very early on.

Heather is excited about the opportunity to serve the League and says, “I am so honored to be slated for PEE. I am elated about the opportunity to work with our amazing membership. The Junior League mission says it all: The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, Inc. is an organiza-

tion of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. What an honor to serve our League in this capacity.”

As for the new Executive Vice President-Elect, Hilary has been an active member for five years including placements in Done in a Day Head Volunteer, Nominating, and head of Education Research and Development. Hilary is looking forward to her upcoming role in the League and says, “Part of the League’s mission is to improve communities through the action and leadership of trained volunteers. To that end, and in my current role in Education Research and Development, I am working on organizing training/motivational sessions in areas of board service, health and wellness, spiritual health, empowering women, financial wellness, etc. If our membership is knowledgeable of such topics, we will be a greater influence in our community. The pursuit of knowledge should be a specific strategy of the League, and something I will focus on as Executive Vice President.”

Jennifer Michael (Active) and husband Joseph, along with big sister Sydney, welcomed son Preston on November 2, 2016.

He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long.

Cookbook Recipe Awesome Au Gratin Potatoes Serves 8 – 10

Ingredients: 8 baking potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 2 pounds) 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese 1 (10-ounce) can Cheddar cheese soup 3/4 cup milk 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup (1 ounce) freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Directions: Arrange the potatoes in a buttered baking dish. Combine the Cheddar cheese, soup, milk, pepper, and garlic in a bowl and mix well.

Pour the cheese mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese and paprika.

Bake, covered with foil, at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes longer or until brown and bubbly.
